Great designs like this always require a “wow” factor, and we are grateful that our clients allowed us to do something so spectacular! However, during our design consultation, they also had additional requirements that needed to be met.

silver painted frame. The drapery fabric mimicked the same blues/silvers found in the mural. We added decorative trim to the draperies to give the look and dimensions of square metal bolts. The drapery rods were silver metallic with round ball-in-circle finials resembling chrome disks embedded with crystals. To complete the room, we added a plush silvery gray area rug to pull the entire design together.

The man of the house loves old trucks and was hoping to incorporate his large picture of an antique flatbed truck. To address their issues, we selected an oversized bookcase that fit perfectly in the space, completely covering the wall with only a few inches on each side to spare. We built a custom file drawer into the bottom cabinet which provided file space. We used a unique rustic media console with sliding barn doors and added a custom slide-out shelf to house the computer printer. Checkerboard Café, a family owned business, opened on May 1st, 2018 by Stephen Wilson and his mother, Rossanna Aldrich. Before opening the Checkerboard Café Stephen and his mother operated a food truck called “The Filling Station” which became very successful, however, customer demand was high and growing quickly so they required a larger location. They are extremely grateful that their amazing customers followed them to their new restaurant, and thankful for their new customers.

Although they are still a new restaurant, Stephen and Rossanna have created great relationships with several local business owners and affirm that they could not have started the business without the support of God and their family, which includes: Natosha, their quality, marketing, and finance director, Rae, their kitchen and staff manager, and Richard, who also assists in the kitchen, their kids, their extended family, their church family and their amazing staff. The owners of the building they occupy have been a blessing to them as well. Checkerboard Café creates a family atmosphere for their customers to relax, eat, and enjoy their plethora of home cooked meals.

Employment Solutions originated in 1992 as a family owned and operated independent staffing agency by Michael and Linda Phillips. At that time most of the area agencies were family owned. Over time most have become national corporations or franchises with the important decisions being made at a corporate headquarters in another state. Today, Employment Solutions is still family owned and operated by father and son, Michael and Adam Phillips. As a full-time staffing agency, they provide quality services to their clients and career opportunities to their associates throughout the East Tennessee area. Their mission is simple- to have a great working relationship with their customers and employees. Which they achieve by focusing on teamwork, training, loyalty, safety, and total customer satisfaction. They are not affiliated with a national franchise or worldwide corporation; their philosophy is that a company is only as good as the people in it. At Employment Solutions their customers are their number one priority. Today, they are the only independent full-service agency left in the Tri-Cities area, their success is due to the way they do business and how they treat their clients and employees. Their goal is to provide you with the best employment ex-

perience possible while offering tailored services to meet your staffing needs. The types of positions they place employees at include industrial/manufacturing, administrative, office/clerical, and commercial. The do offer different types of work assignments including: temp-to-hire, direct hire placement, and on-site coordination. They have been providing workforce solutions for some of the largest companies throughout the East Tennessee area where they often do all the interviewing and hiring for the past 26 years. They have been fortunate to have kept some of the same customers since day one. To get started all you must do is submit your resume and application online or visit their office at 516 W. Oakland Ave, Johnson City, TN 37604 where you will complete your application process. After the application process is complete, you interview with one of their staffing specialists where you will have the opportunity to discuss your skills and what kind of things you’re looking for in your next employment. by Kaitlin Buchanan

In May 2016 Bristol Café and Market was created when Michael and Mary Wright started the intense process of renovating what is now their beautiful restaurant. Mary’s son, Andrew Browning and his wife Megan joined them later in this innovative process. On August 29th, 2017 the restaurant opened to the public. Bristol Café & Market, a modern café with artisan roots, serves handcrafted sandwiches, soups, salads, and more, built to perfection. They also offer an additional formal dinner menu in the evenings featuring Bacon wrapped Meatloaf, Chicken dishes, rotating specials, gourmet sides and now Wine! “There’s no place like home” and BC&M captures the essence of “home”. Bristol Café & Market is proud to use the freshest ingredients in making our delicious, made in-house regional fare. Michael & Mary, after retiring in late 2015 from their respective careers, pursued their dream to open a family-owned restaurant consisting of home-cooking and featuring her family recipes. Mary’s biggest goal, with her inspiring and innovative food knowledge, was to ensure that the restaurant she created was a spot where everyone would feel at home. Andrew and Megan Browning started their careers in the hospitality industry when they were in their teens at Carrabbas Italian Grill. In his twenties, Andrew was soon promoted to Kitchen Manager and went on to manage multiple Carrabbas locations. During Megan’s high school/college years, she gained the expertise for all positions in the Front Of House such as serving, bartending, hosting, and managing. From there, they each moved into their respective management positions, and together have over 20+ years of hospitality experience. The biggest and most challenging obstacle that BC&M faced in their journey was Mary’s tragic accident. In June of 2016, Mary was involved in a fall while renovating the building and was hospitalized in a coma for three months. Tragically, she passed away in August just be-

fore the opening day. Andrew, Megan and Michael finally decided that they would continue her dream and open the restaurant. The struggle and heartbreak were very difficult, but they decided that Mary’s dream and love for sharing her family recipes had to be fulfilled! As BC&M continues to grow, they are also committed to an active relationship with their community. Megan Browning is on the board of the YWCA which is a great way for their restaurant to be able to give back to the community. The restaurant has donated food to the YW for various events and supports the program, Tech Gyrls, by volunteering at their prom and after school events. Bristol Cafe & Market sells affordably priced made-toorder sandwiches, soups and salads, as well as a variety of retail items in their take & bake cooler. BC&M will cater to the needs of busy lifestyles by offering easy pickup and quick dine-in options. Homemade desserts are freshly prepared and designed for just the right amount of a “little bite of something sweet”. BC&M is designed to meet the needs of a variety of customers by offering lunch and dinner menu selections that can either be picked up or enjoyed inside the restaurant. The on-thego option is perfect for customers looking for quick and speedy service. BC&M’s dine in option boasts an atmosphere created to represent an “at home” feeling. Their dinner menu consists of items that are all made in house with fresh ingredients and a lot of heart. They now have Wine options to serve for any occasion! At BC&M they believe catering should be easy and fun for customers. From planning a corporate function or business meeting, hosting a wedding reception, party in your home or renting out our facility for the perfect venue, they’ve got you covered! BC&M’s extensive catering menu features hors d’oeuvres, sandwiches, bacon-wrapped meatloaf, BBQ and much more! Special requests are also welcome. Their staff strives to make any occasion stress-free and memorable. BC&M captures the essence of “home” and they take pride ensuring their customers feel equivalent to being at home. Their staff is aware of their responsibilities and the importance of their role at BC&M. It is a family environment, and the employees know they are a part of this family! The restaurant started with Mary’s vision of how she wanted her restaurant to look and feel, so the employees understand the importance of continuing that vision. by Kaitlin Buchanan

The Family Pharmacy was established in 1977, and in September of 2014 Mark and Lori Kolarsky took over ownership. With their son in school studying to be a Pharmacist and the opportunity to take over The Family Pharmacy becoming available, purchasing the pharmacy was a good investment for the future of their family and community. Both had grown up and raised their families in Fall Branch so the community is very dear to them. They aspire to make sure that anyone who steps into their store leaves with a sense of familiarity, creating an environment of trust from the moment they walk in. They strive to bring new products and innovations into the pharmacy to keep up with the latest technology and trends, while still keeping the small town feel. They have a wide array of gifts and local products, everything from local honey and candles to Kavu bags and they are also the largest retailer of Simply Southern in the Tri-Cities.

The main focus of the business is Pharmacy Services, caring for their patients and helping them achieve the best quality of life. They accomplish this through personal relationships with their patients and their physicians, medication therapy management and immunization services just to name a few. Aside from their patients, their greatest asset is their staff, they are an integral part of building the trust and relationships with the patients that they rely on. In the years since ownership their biggest obstacle has been to bring new products and technologies into the store without losing the small town feel. They want to be a destination stop not just another pharmacy along the street. Starting out with a few designs of the Simply Southern shirts they have since added in many other brands along the way. Needless to say, The Family Pharmacy located in Fall Branch, TN, is not your average pharmacy. Stop by today and see what new interesting things they’ve got in stock at 1714 TN-93 suite 11, Fall Branch, TN. by Kaitlin Buchanan

Watchdog Surveillance and Spy Gear of Johnson City opened in January 2018. The owner Mark Maier was inspired to open the store because his partner’s father who owns the original store in Knoxville, had been getting frequent business and calls from places like Bristol and Asheville in North Carolina. The main priority at Watchdog Surveillance and Spy Gear is to provide a local retail outlet in the Tri-Cities area for surveillance equipment. In the store they sell spy gear (gadgets) such as hidden cameras, GPS trackers, covert WiFi, nanny-cams, baby monitors, pet monitors, etc. as well personal security devices such as pepper gel, personal alarms, and stun guns. They also provide top commercial quality security camera systems at very competitive prices and refer contractors for installations. The original Knoxville store has been operating successfully for around 8 years and offer more gear due to having more space, so if you see anything on their website you need locally they can have it within 48hrs. They also have a great return policy and will continue to work with their customers to find the best possible solution for your security needs. In this business customer discretion is important, and Watchdog Surveillance and Spy Gear takes that

seriously. They strive to have a pleasant staff and a keep a warm environment for customers to engage with them. They also offer free on-site evaluations and estimates for their security camera systems within 25 miles, after that there is a nominal service call charge. The Johnson City location is still a very new store, so their biggest challenge right now is getting people in the area to know they’re there. Stop by their store at 1735 W State of Franklin Rd, Johnson City, Tennessee 37604. The time to own your own security is here, and Watchdog Surveillance and Spy Gear of Johnson City has it all!!! by Kaitlin Buchanan

Straight Edge Construction and Roofing was established by Joe Dugger in 2000. Joe started working in construction right after high school and immediately knew it was the job for him after watching houses being built from the ground up. They also never cut corners so that their customers know when they leave the job they don’t have to worry about anything. They are a certified GAF contractor, and not only do they repair your roofs, but they can also install metal roofing, asphalt shingles, and wood shakes. They get most of their work by word of mouth because they strive to make their customers happy by giving them exactly what they want and not trying to upset them by pushing them to add thing they don’t need or want. They offer a 7-year warranty on all

their workmanship as well as a 50-year warranty on all GAF shingle roofing sold from the manufacturer and a 45-year warranty on all metal roofing sold through the manufacturer. Time for Financial “Spring Cleaning” The days are longer and the tem-

peratures are warmer – so it must be spring. For many of us, that means it’s time for some spring cleaning. But why stop with sprucing up your living space? This year, consider extending the “spring cleaning” concept to your financial environment, too. How can you tidy your finances? Here are some suggestions: “De-clutter” your portfolio. As you go through your home during your spring cleaning rounds, you may notice that you’ve acquired a lot of duplicate objects – do you really need five mops? – or at least some things you can no longer use, like a computer that hasn’t worked since 2010. You can create some valuable space by getting rid of these items. And the same principle can apply to your investment portfolio, because over the years you may well have acquired duplicate investments that aren’t really helping you move toward your goals. You may also own some investments, which, while initially fitting in to your overall strategy, no longer do so. You could be better off by selling your “redundant” investments and using the proceeds to purchase new ones that will provide more value. Get organized. During your spring cleaning, one of your key goals may be to get organized. So you might want to rearrange the tools in your garage or establish a new filing system in your home office. Proper organization is also important to investors – and it goes beyond having your brokerage and 401(k) statements in nice neat piles. For exam-

ple, you may have established IRAs with different financial services companies. By moving them to one provider, you may save some fees and reduce your paperwork, but, more important, you may find that such a move actually helps you better manage your investments. You’ll know exactly where your money is going, and it could be easier to follow a single investment strategy. Also, with all your IRAs in one place, it will be much easier for you to manage the required minimum distributions you must start taking when you turn 70-1/2. (These distributions are not required for Roth IRAs.)

and can’t work for a while? Have you considered the high costs of long-term care, such as an extended nursing home stay? A financial professional can help you determine if your insurance coverage is adequate for all these needs. Consider putting these spring cleaning suggestions to work. They may help you keep your financial house in good shape for all the seasons yet to arrive. Thomas A. Davis, AAMS® is Financial Advisor at Edward Jones Investments. He can be reached by telephone at 423-5432018 or at his office on Lawson Avenue in Elizabethton This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor.

Protect your family’s financial future. When cleaning up this spring, you may notice areas of concern around protecting your home – perhaps there’s a crack in your window, or your fence is damaged or part of your chimney is crumbling. Your financial independence – and that of your family – also needs protection. Is your life insurance sufficient to pay for your mortgage, college for your kids and perhaps some retirement funds for your spouse? Do you have disability insurance that can provide you with some income if you become ill or injured

Shelton Tile and Laser Design first opened in 2009 at their former location in the old Gurney burger building; however, they quickly outgrew that space and moved to a larger showroom in 2015 located at 1308 E Main St. here in Johnson City, Tennessee. The owner, JD Shelton, has been installing and selling tile and hardwood flooring for more than 30 years. JD’s father, James Shelton, began installing flooring in Asheville, NC in the late 1950s. When JD was young, he would accompany his father on jobs, and progressed from a helper to an installer, to a business owner. His father still works at Shelton Tile and Laser Design. The laser side of the business began in 2008, when JD and his wife Amy discovered laser engraving at a tile trade show, where laser engravers would etch photos in granite. Now, they engrave unique gift items, from baseball bats to tumblers, as well as marking parts for industries.

Shelton Tile & Laser Design is a second-generation tile and floor covering sales business in Northeast Tennessee, offering unique tile and hardwood flooring and working with customers to help design their space. They also bring to the Tri-Cities the unique service of laser etching, engraving and cutting for individuals and businesses. They provide their customers tile, hardwood flooring, LVT and LVP (luxury vinyl tile and plank), tile accessories, Laser etching, engraving and cutting, as well as, Dye sublimation services – color photos on tiles for murals, keychains, and other products. In 2017, they were voted Best Interior Design by Johnson City Press Reader’s Choice. Shelton Tile and Laser Design highly value their staff and allow them to help design the showroom and work space to be efficient and customer-friendly. Megan Christian and DeAnna Geiger creatively pull colors, textures, and styles together, while, at the same time, using their customers’ ideas to determine unique selections. All their customers are greatly appreciated and valued regardless of the size of any job they are asked to complete. Shelton Tile and Laser Design strive to create an atmosphere of peace and joy in Christ where remodeling is a fun and creative project designed to fit each of their customers’ distinctive personalities and tastes. by Kaitlin Buchanan

Wendy L. Wolf, Storypainter ™ When artist/painter Wendy L Wolf relocated from the Allentown- Bethlehem area of Pa. to East Tenn in 2013, she knew she was ready for a change, both professionally and geographically. Self taught and self employed since 1995, Wendy’s freelance art career had run a dizzying gamut from hand painted murals to a design/consult project creating an indoor mini golf. There had been wallpaper border templates, custom faux finishes, restorations, adoption paintings, pet portraits, et. She had secured licensing deals with various companies, allowing her original art to appeared on products such as vinyl wallpaper murals and wooden jigsaw puzzles. Prior to leaving Pa she was working on developing her own original genre, Storypainting, and relocation gave her a unique opportunity to stepback and refocus. In 2016 she established her new Tennessee business “The Commemorative Art Company”. Her company offers Storypaintings and also Hand Painted Pet Portraits. SOOOOO, what exactly is a Storypainting? Storypaintings are an “art package” consisting of three parts. An original piece of painted conceptual artwork, (“The Painting”), a narration, (The Story) and hidden pictures with a key (which promotes interaction). Currently, Wendy offers two kinds of Storypaintings, Biblical Storypaintings, and Commissioned Storypaintings. Biblical Storypaintings are billed as “Art that Works With Your Bible”. They are purposely designed to get people to open their Bibles and interact with each other, as well as the art and The Book. Prints of the Biblical Storypaintings are readily available for immediate purchase. Commissioned Storypaintings let you “Hold Your Memories in Your Hands”. They are created out of interviews with clients (either in person or on the phone) and provide a unique opportunity to preserve memories and move them forward in a visual and timeless way. Commissioned Storypaintings can be created for any story, and

Hagood and Sons Towing was originally founded by Jim Hagood in 1963, however, his sons took over in March 2017 to continue the business. Jim Hagood has been towing for 54 years and still recalls his first tow on November 22, 1963- the day JFK was shot; he even recalls that it was a DUI on Center Street in downtown Kingsport. Having grown up in the business, Hagood’s sons wanted to carry on Jim’s legacy, and to eventually, pass the business down to their own sons. At Hagood and Sons their mission is to treat others as well as they want their family treated, and to uphold the Hagood and Sons name that their father, Jim, had built over the years.

Hagood and Sons Towing believe that their staff is family and they are treated with the upmost respect. Frequently they have provided breakfast for their staff members to show that they love what they do and want to be there to help others in any way they can. Each time they go out and do a tow for their customers, they donate a portion of their fee to local animal shelters and rescues, as well as, to organizations that provide assistance for people in need. In addition, the profit from homemade candles is donated to community-based organizations. At Hagood’s it’s all about giving back. If you’re in need of a reliable, affordable towing service give Hagood and Sons a call at (423)-863-1515 and remember that their motto is and always has been: “We don’t want your arms and legs, just want your tows!” by Kaitlin Buchanan

Hagood and Sons Towing do winching and towing for breakdowns, wrecks, tire changes, battery jumps, and even full service. They can do lowered vehicles without a scratch, as well as, motorcycles and even move a building or two. However, the greatest challenge they faced was relocating their business from Hawkins County to Washington County and trying to establish their name here.

a variety of distinguished restaurants and resorts including: Morton’s in California, Charley’s Crab in Palm Beach, Casa Restaurants in Fort Wayne, and Starwood Resorts in Cape Cod. The Angry Italian, opened in November 2017 by Keith Yonker, offers Chicago-inspired Italian cuisine to East Tennessee. Why is it called The Angry Italian? Yonker says, “Just lean your ears toward our kitchen, and you will figure it out.” The name originated at the beginning of his culinary career when his co-workers created the nickname “The Angry Italian”. Yonker continues, “My being loud, vibrant, and waving a knife in my hand made it pretty easy for my co-workers to start calling me The Angry Italian. So ever since then the name has always stuck.” Though, he reiterates that he is not actually angry, just animated.

Despite traveling around the world, he always aspired to make his home in East Tennessee. In 2015, Yonker moved to the Tri-Cities to oversee the seven cafés at Eastman as their artisan chef. This position led up to his opening of the new restaurant The Angry Italian. He is so excited to introduce Chicago-inspired Italian cuisine to East Tennessee, where business has been booming since he opened the doors last year. Yonker attributes this success to his philosophy, “to surround you in a place that makes you feel welcome, while providing you with the best in authentic Chicago style pizza and sandwiches.” Visit The Angry Italian to experience authentic Chicago style Italian cuisine at 16 6th Street, Bristol, Tennessee. The Angry Italian also offers efficient online ordering for customers on the go. by Kaitlin Buchanan

Born and raised in Chicago, Yonker is a certified executive chef with a remarkable resume in culinary arts. His passion for cooking started at a young age and he has been creating incredible recipes for over forty years. He received his culinary degree from the prestigious Culinary Institute of America and shortly after landed an impressive internship with Walt Disney World. Since then, he has worked for
