In 1915, the Coca-Cola Company sent out a challenge to glass companies across the US to design a “bottle so distinct that you would recognize it by feeling in the dark or lying broken on the ground.” The Root Glass Company in Terre Haute, Indiana created the winning design, making the city the birthplace of the iconic bottle that is recognized around the world.
THE COKE BOTTLE SCULPTURE PROJECT The 6-foot-tall Coke Bottle sculptures throughout Terre Haute exhibit the pride the community takes in its role in the development of this world-renowned packaging design. The intent of the organization was to gather together high school coaches and supporters of football throughout the Wabash Valley. The focus of the group is to promote football and football related activities. The WVFCA each year host several skill camps for athletes, grade school through high school. They also conduct clinics for coaches and volunteers. The largest event each year is the Annual AllStar Game. This is played the last weekend in June and players from all the schools are represented in the game. Rainride July 16 The 160-mile length bicycle ride runs mostly on the Historic National Route 40, an older, divided four-lane road with light traffic and gentle rolling hills. The ride begins at 7am on the campus of St. Mary-of-the-Woods College in Terre Haute, Indiana, and crosses the state to Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana. To participate you should be able to average at least 12 to 14 mph for over 11 hours. National Road Heritage Trail Park
The National Road is a historically important facet of Terre Haute and Vigo County’s economic development. As an All-American Road of the National Scenic Byway system, the Historic National Road offers unique historical tourism and recreational opportunities for visitors to Terre Haute and Vigo County. The National Road Heritage Trail is designed to serve as a 7.25 mile non-motorized transportation corridor linking eastern Vigo County and the City of Terre Haute to historic Fairbanks Park located on the Wabash River.

Griffin Bike Park
Tourism is big business in Vigo County, bringing in about a $30 million dollars annually. Visitors to Terre Haute can go for par at several city and county golf courses, visit a world-class bicycle trail, attend music and community festivals as well as watch several spectator sporting events. Seventeen racing events are scheduled from May through October at the Terre Haute Action Track’s half-mile dirt track at the Vigo County Fairgrounds on U.S. 41, with the USAC sprint cars, stock cars and BMX “X Games.” If baseball is your game, Terre Haute REX, the 2018 Prospect League Champions, are well into the 2022 season. The summer collegiate league season runs through early August with home games at Bob Warn Field, 931 N. First Street. If you want to get into the swing of the action, golf outings are scheduled through the season at Rea Park, the Terre Haute Country Club, Hulman Links, Idle Creek and Mark’s Par 3. For bicyclers, the 300-acre Griffin Bike Park features 16 miles of trails. It provides a full-spectrum, destination-riding experience for bikers of all ages, skills and abilities. Food, culture and music are also featured throughout the year. Terre Haute is home to Water Tower Estates, a family-run winery at 525 W. Springhill Drive that features a boutique with unique gifts. There’s also The Sycamore Winery, a family-operated winery located at 1320 Durkees Ferry Road, West Terre Haute. It features a tasting room and event center that sits on a beautiful 60-acre estate with walking trails and scenic lake views. For beer lovers, there is the Terre Haute Brewing Co., founded in 1837. This brewery has a long history as being one of the original nine commercial breweries in the U.S. and the second oldest. The original historic building, located at 401 S. 9th Street in the city’s downtown, features a large tap room with a new bar and elevated seating area. There’s even a larger event area, complete with a second bar, for special events and music. The Terre Haute Farmers market has a winter market season held on the first Saturday of each month, from November to May. It is held inside the Meadows Shopping Center, 2800 Poplar Street. The summer season, which starts in May, is held every Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon. Vendors bring fresh produce, homemade baked goods, jams and jellies, grass-fed beef, crafts and garments. The annual Banks of the Wabash River Festival at Fairbanks Park draws many people to the park next to the state’s largest river in late May and early June. The annual Fourth of July celebration features fireworks lighting up the riverbanks. Strawberries, ice cream, biscuits and whipped cream are an early June hit just a few blocks away on Ohio Street near Sixth Street during the annual Strawberry Festival at First Congregational Church. Most visitors try “The Works” which is a fresh biscuit topped with ice cream and whipped cream — especially tasty on a hot and sunny day. On September 16-17, the Terre Haute German Oberlander Club hosts the 49th Oktoberfest. The event features polka music and dancing — lots of dancing — as well as traditional German costumes and a menu of beer, schnitzels, brats, sauerkraut, kartoffelsalat (authentic German potato salad) and more. For musical entertainment, the 18th annual Blues at the Crossroads music festival returns to Terre Haute’s downtown on September 9-10 where the corner of 7th Street and Wabash Avenue is closed to traffic. state marker, is considered the “Crossroad of America,” where U.S. 40, the former “National Road,” opened the west for settlement and U.S. 41, a major northsouth route, were designated as part of the original federal highway system in 1926. The two-day Blues at the Crossroads is expanding this year and offering more stages downtown. Bring lawn chairs for extra seating and feel free to wander downtown among food vendors and shops that stay open during the event. In October, treat your taste buds at the Breakfast Optimist Chili Cook Off, where dozens of competitors prepare and share their chili recipes in exchange for votes while raising money to support literacy programs. October also includes the Indiana State University homecoming parade that stretches through downtown on Wabash Avenue featuring colorful floats, boisterous bands and candy for children. The celebratory fanfare is in advance of the afternoon football game across town at Memorial Stadium, near the intersection of Wabash and Brown Avenues. A variety of food and beverage vendors line the street all the way to the stadium, where a tent city of hospitality also awaits. Autumn weather brings the the Pioneer Days to Fowler Park. This event is educational, family-friendly and full of fun. The Miracle on 7th Street, which has included a “Light Your Way” Christmas Parade sponsored by Saint Mary-ofthe-Woods College, is another popular downtown event set for the first Friday and Saturday in December. A winter wonderland comes alive as Christmas trees decorated by not-for-profit organizations light up the street, storefronts compete for the best
window displays and an open-air market features vendors with holiday gifts waiting to wrap. It’s easy to get into the holiday spirit as you mingle with other shoppers in a magical wonderland. For holiday decorating ideas, a drive through Deming Park on Terre Haute’s east side is a visual treat where nonprofit groups decorate creative holiday-themed shelters. The groups have used themes ranging from pop culture icons such as Star Wars and Peanut cartoons to snowmen, gingerbread people and angels. For those interested in history, Terre Haute has a lot to offer. The 34,000-square foot Vigo County History Center at 929 Wabash Avenue showcases its collections of more than 100,000 vintage artifacts and historic memorabilia, in addition to interactive exhibits and an old-fashioned Coke-themed soda fountain. Other sites include the gold-domed Vigo County Courthouse and the home of political activist/trade unionist, Eugene V. Debs, on the campus of Indiana State University. While at ISU, visit the newly renovated Hulman Center, home of the Indiana State Sycamores, where a largerthan-life bronze statue of Sycamore and NBA’s Boston Celtics legend Larry Bird stands to commemorate his college playing days in Terre Haute. It’s a popular photo op. For time in nature, the 2,600-acre Wabashiki Fish & Wildlife Area features trails through natural scenery and a lookout at Dewey Point. Terre Haute has several city parks, with its largest being Deming Park, which features a unique train ride for youngsters. Vigo County’ Fowler Park offers lake swimming, as well as camp grounds and trails. Other trails can be found at Hawthorn Park, behind Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.

The Terre Haute Convention Center
Terre Haute has a new downtown convention center. A formal grand opening was staged in early April this year, after construction began in late April 2020. The total project was more than $34.89 million, with actual construction cost more than $27.21 million, including a new adjacent parking garage. Work still continues on the attached Larry Bird Museum, slated to open in 2023. Jon Marvel, president of the Vigo County Capital Improvement Board, called the convention center’s opening a statement for the city. “It is a statement of the future, a statement of innovation and progressiveness where everyone comes together with one goal, and that gives Terre Haute, Vigo County and the Convention and Visitors Bureau the opportunity to welcome people to our city,” he said. “You have heard of Hoosier hospitality; I am saying we have Hautean hospitality,” Marvel said. Terre Haute Mayor Duke Bennett noted work began in 2014 to build a convention center. The project was initially organized
to include Indiana State University, but after funding gaps, it was split into its own project, with the formation of the Capital Improvement Board and the implementation of a 1% food and beverage sales tax for the county. “This is the biggest community project that we have done collectively in the history of our community, with the city, the county, the EDC, and the CVB — and every time you

pay 1% percent of what you eat, it goes into this facility and the CIB. And there are more things to come,” the mayor said during the convention center’s grand opening. Specifically, Bennett noted the possibility of a two-hotel building on the site of the former administration building of the Vigo County School Corporation at 7th and Wabash Avenue, near the convention center. Bennett said that could be the city’s next
big project. That project would be a privatepublic partnership, the mayor said, between investors such as Dora Hotel Company, which is an owner of the Hilton Garden Inn that now connects to the new convention center. “My hope would be that construction could start soon,” within the next year or two, the mayor said. “It will take a year or so to build it, but it takes those people to be willing to make those investments.” Churchill Downs plans to break ground on a new “Queen of Terre Haute” casino on Terre Haute’s east side as soon as late May. The company is anticipating a 14-month construction, with the casino opening in late 2023, according to Ryan Jordan, senior vice president of real estate development for Churchill Downs Inc. Churchill Downs is anticipating supply cost increases, with the company projecting its casino project cost to be about $260 million, up from an original estimate of $240 million, Jason Sauer, senior vice president of corporate development for Churchill Downs, told the Gaming Commission. The 50-acre site is southwest of the intersection of Interstate 70 and U.S. 40/ Indiana 46. Churchill Downs acquired 25 acres from Premier Gaming, which had been a contender for the gaming license, as well as an adjacent 25 acres. Churchill Downs entered two definitive contracts for those properties in February and March. In the 12 Points, on Terre Haute’s north side, efforts to revitalize that neighborhood continued early this year with the addition of a unique gateway arch across Lafayette Avenue welcoming people to the 12 Points neighborhood. The steel sign, which measures just over 41 feet wide and weighs about 2,100 pounds, reads, “Welcome to Historic 12 Points.” And this year marks the inaugural Creator’s Market, starting in May. Creator’s Market will be held weekly each Thursday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. in 12 Points,

The Wabashiki Fish and Wildlife Area, an Indiana Department of Natural Resources Division of Fish and Wildlife managed property, contributes to the public lands available to the citizens and visitors of the Wabash Valley. The area serves as part of the Healthy Rivers INitiative (HRI). HRI is Indiana’s largest land conservation initiative. It includes a partnership of resource agencies and organizations who are working with willing landowners to permanently protect over 43,000 acres located in the floodplain of the Wabash River and Sugar Creek and over 26,000 acres of the Muscatatuck River bottomlands. Dewey Point, a Vigo County Parks and Recreation Department managed property named for Susie Dewey, is located at 110 E. National Avenue in West Terre Haute, IN and serves as the primary trailhead and access point to the Wabashiki Fish and Wildlife Area and the Wabashiki Trail. Dewey Point currently offers parking, viewfinders, restrooms, and a shelter with plans to construct a canoe/kayak launch, and install interpretive signage. The Wabashiki Trail, situated on top of a US Army Corps of Engineers levee and an agricultural levee, currently includes five miles of multi-modal trails that take the user through different scenic areas as well as along the Wabash River. While at the Wabashiki Fish and Wildlife Area, visitors can enjoy hiking, biking, bird watching, fishing, hunting, canoeing/kayaking, native gardens, and many public recreational programs offered through the Vigo County Parks and Recreation Department. The wetland area offers many benefits to wildlife, waterfowl, and people. These benefits include: water quality improvement and sediment filtration, habitat for wildlife, flood reduction, water supply, opportunities for recreation, and beautiful scenery. Dewey Point and the Wabashiki Trail have been developed and are maintained through the collaborative efforts of the Vigo County Parks and Recreation Department, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Division of Fish and Wildlife, Wabash River Development and Beautification, Inc. (RiverSCAPE), Indiana State University, Vigo County, the City of Terre Haute, the Town of West Terre Haute, INDOT, the West Terre Haute Levee Association, Wabash Valley Community Foundation, and many other generous organizations.

With numerous opportunities for outdoor recreation, including the nationally recognized Griffin Bike Park, and thriving museums, many of which are in downtown Terre Haute, Vigo County provides a variety of things to do and places to go for residents and visitors alike.
