The cost of this publication is $94.32. The Bismarck School Board met on September 28, 2009, in the Tom Baker Room of the City/County Office Building. Board President Olson called the meeting to order at 5:15 p.m. and requested that the Business Manager call the roll. Members present: Paul Govig, Lawrence King, Dan Kuntz, Steve Marquardt, and Marcia Olson. Following agreement on the Agenda, Mrs. Olson called upon Superintendent Paul Johnson to give his reports. Dr. Johnson began by calling upon John Salwei, Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Schools and Curriculum Instruction, to present the first report. Dr. Salwei introduced Connie Kudrna,Assistant Director of Standards and Achievements in the Department of Public Instruction. Ms. Kudrna shared information about the required administration of ACT or Work Keys to all North Dakota juniors starting in the spring of 2010. Dr. Salwei reviewed the 2009 ACT results and provided comparisons with past years. There were no Board responses to presentations made at previous meetings. It was moved by Govig and seconded by Marquardt to approve the following list of items on the Consent Agenda in accord with the recommendations made by the administration: the minutes of the September 14, 2009, regular School Board meeting and the resignation submitted by Jill Sanford, effective immediately. Motion carried. Mrs. Olson announced that it was the time

scheduled for public appearances. She asked Dr. Johnson if anyone had contacted him to request an opportunity to address the Board. Dr. Johnson stated that no one had contacted him and there was no one in the audience who wished to speak to the Board. The first item under Unfinished Business was approval of the 2009-10 budget. Board members had several questions regarding the information contained in the proposed budget. Following a review and discussion of the budget, it was moved by Kuntz and seconded by King to approve the 2009-10 budget for the Bismarck School District as presented. Motion carried. It was moved by Kuntz and seconded by King to approve the Easement for Construction, Operation, and Maintenance of Transit Improvements as presented. Motion carried. Darin Scherr, Director of Facilities and Transportation, explained the bids that had been received for the purchase of a new activity bus and a new rear engine bus. Following a review of the bids, it was moved by Kuntz and seconded by Govig to accept the low bids submitted by Trucks of Bismarck for the purchase of an activity bus and a rear engine bus and to accept the lower of the trade-in value or the grant, depending on which provides the lowest net cost to the district. Motion carried. The first item under New Business was a review of the bids received for brick repair at Century High School. Mr. Scherr reported on the three bids that had been received for the repair work. It was moved by Govig and seconded by Marquardt to accept the low bid submitted by Streyle Masonry in the amount of $96,000 for the CHS brick repair project. Motion carried. Mr. Scherr then reviewed the bids received for the Simle gymnasium air conditioning project. Following some discussion, it was moved by Marquardt and seconded by Govig to accept the low bid submitted by Central Mechanical in the amount of $53,600 for the air conditioning project in the Simle Middle School gymnasium. Motion carried. It was moved by Kuntz and seconded by Govig to approve the Resolution Providing for the Sale of General Obligation Certificates of Indebtedness of 2009. Motion carried. It was moved by Govig and seconded by Marquardt to approve the Resolution Providing for the Sale of General Obligation Refunding Bonds of 2009. Motion carried. Under Discussion Items, the Board discussed naming and sponsor-ship opportunities in the new career and technical center. Dr. Johnson requested input from Board members regarding the possibility of obtaining an emergency notification system. It appeared to be the consensus of the Board that the administration should pursue the selection and purchase of an appropriate emergency notification system for the Bismarck School District. Dr. Johnson requested input from Board members regarding the concepts for a survey of parents regarding busing services. There being no further business to come before the Board, Mrs. Olson adjourned the meeting at 6:32 p.m. 10/16 - 604642
