AMHERST, Mass. (9/4/10) -- The fourth-ranked Tribe fell at conference foe Massachusetts, 27-23, in both teams’ season opener in Amherst, Mass. Trailing 23-14 in the fourth quarter, UMass put together a pair of touchdown drives in the final 10 minutes to rally back for the victory. The outcome snapped the Tribe’s 14-game winning streak against unranked FCS opponents. UMass utilized a balanced attack, totaling 215 rushing yards and 223 passing yards, en route to outgaining the College, 438-334. The effort snapped a 15-game streak in which W&M had outgained the opposition. Making his first collegiate start, quarterback Mike Callahan completed 21-of-35 passes for 221 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. The Mountville, Pa., native also rushed for 39 yards and found the end zone on a 28-yard scamper. After forcing a punt on UMass’ initial possession, the Tribe got on the scoreboard first when Callahan connected with senior fullback Jimmy Hobson on a 5-yard touchdown pass with 4:53 remaining in the first quarter. Callahan completed all five of his pass attempts on the 12-play, 50-yard drive that took 6:09. While the Minutemen later evened the score early in the second quarter on a 36-yard touchdown strike from Kyle Havens to Anthony Nelson, W&M responded with a 28-yard touchdown run by Callahan on a fourth-and-eight situation. A 4-yard touchdown run by John Griffin with 1:36 remaining in the half briefly gave UMass the lead, but David Miller capped off an 11-play, 79 yard drive with a 17-yard field goal as the first half clcok expired. Neither team put any points on the board in the third quarter, but a 34-yard touchdown strike from Callahan to wideout Cameron Dohse put the Tribe ahead, 23-14, early in the fourth. However, touchdown runs by Jon Hernandez and Griffin in the final 10 minutes put the Minutemen ahead for good, as W&M’s final drive ended with an interception by linebacker Tyler Holmes off a pass Jonathan Grimes was unable to handle.

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (9/11/10) -- The No. 11/14 Tribe extended its winning streak against VMI to 24 games with a 45-0 victory in its 2010 home opener at Zable Stadium. In addition to winning its seventh consecutive home game, the Tribe posted its third shutout in its last four games played at Zable Stadium. Additionally, W&M pushed its winning streak against non-conference FCS opponents to 18 games. The College outgained VMI, 391-239, and allowed the Keydets inside the red zone just once. Additionally, W&M limited VMI to just 1-of-19 on third and fourth down situations. W&M’s defensive unit also registered five interceptions – the most by a Tribe team since equaling the feat against Penn in 1995. Sophomore safety Brian Thompson led the individual efforts with a pair of interceptions and a TFL, while junior defensive end Marcus Hyde totaled a team-high nine tackles with a sack and a pair of TFLs. Despite playing just two and a half quarters, senior quarterback Mike Callahan posted some impressive numbers, completing 12-of-17 passes for 234 yards and a touchdown. Junior running back Jonathan Grimes, a 2010 Payton Award candidate, rushed for 71 yards and scored three touchdowns as he moved into the program’s all-time top-10 list for rushing touchdowns (19). Sophomore wideout Ryan Moody led the receiving corps with four catches for 110 yards, all of which he recorded in the first half. The Tribe piled up a 31-0 lead by halftime, as it dominated all areas of the game. A 64-yard punt return for a touchdown by B.W. Webb put W&M on the scoreboard first, while Grimes rushed for a pair of scores and Chase Hill snared a 23-yard touchdown catch. Miller also added a 30-yard field goal in the opening 30 minutes of play. Grimes found the end zone for the third time of the night late in the third quarter, while redshirt freshman Jerome Couplin returned an interception 22 yards for a touchdown midway through the fourth quarter.
