LETI ANCESTOR FIGURE This small, but beautifully carved seated figure is from the island of Leti in Indonesia. Originally kept within the home, these figures represent recently deceased family members and served as a vessel through which a spirit could temporarily reside, receive offerings, or be consulted about important matters. These figures could be carved in a variety of different poses, which demarcate gender and social status. This particular figure, depicted in a seated position, the legs drawn up to the chest and arms neatly folded on top of the knees represents a male. Facial features and other common Leti characteristics are still visible. The sculpture is very old and heavily eroded. However this level of weather gives the figure a beautiful texture, bringing out the natural features of the wood. Because of the organic nature of the wood used for these figures, most sculptures of this age and from this region are very rare.

35 Ancestor figure Leti, Indonesia 19th Century Height: 13,5 cm Provenance: Collected before 1980 in Indonesia.
 Emile Deletaille, Brussels.

SEPIK ANCESTOR FIGURE Standing on bent knees with curled arms grasping an oversized head; this is a well sculpted work of art . This figure has good movement in the body with its pose; the oversized nose with carved nose ornament is quite prominent. Sculpture from this region is quite rare, and the works of art are typically idiosyncratic. . The surface shows good carving marks and the pigments are deeply embedded into the figure suggesting good age. The top of the head has a loop for attachment.

KANAK MASK This very old mask from the Kanak of New Caledonia would have been part of a costume, worn by chiefs during funerary ceremonies. The face is alluringly expressive. Great care has been given to the minute details such as the curvature of the cheeks and forehead. The nose, eyes, mouth, and teeth are expertly carved. The downcast eyes are incredibly dramatic, further asserting the masks use as a costume for performance reasons. The holes surrounding the face were once used to affix a feather headdress. The mask may have been painted at one time, as the face is a darker color than the rest of the mask. The wood itself is clearly old and has developed a rich red/orange patina. A mask in this condition is very rare. The majority of them were destroyed by colonial missionaries in the early 19th century. Those on the market today are usually missing the pointed top.

42 Mask Kanak New Caledonia 19th Century Height: 47,5 cm Provenance: Mathias Kormor Gallery, NYC Label with inventory number is still visible on back of mask.
