American Watercolor Society

Traveling Exhibition

(Celebrating 150th Anniversary)

May 12th – July 15th

528 S. Elm St., Greensboro 336-275-9844 • amblesidearts.com

Enter a world infused with aesthetic grace.

The American Watercolor Society, based in New York City, is one of the oldest and most prestigious art societies in the world. Indeed, election to the Society as a Signature Member is one of the most sought-after honors in the painting world. AWS Membership comprises many of the greatest names in painting throughout the Society’s history and includes (to name drop a few) the American impressionist Childe Hassam, regionalists Edward Hopper and Charles Burchfield, plus virtually every member of the important “California School” of watercolorists, and everyone in between, up to and including the late Andrew Wyeth. AWS annual Exhibition is one of the world’s most revered watercolor exhibits. More than 1,200 artists from throughout the United States and 27 foreign countries submit their work to a panel of jurors chosen from Signature Members of the AWS. Of these submissions, 150 paintings are selected for the exhibition. Forty paintings from the show are selected for the Traveling Exhibition, which tours museums and galleries across the country during the next year. Ambleside Gallery is honored to have been selected to be one out of only four venues in the country to host this year’s Traveling Exhibition.

Eclection in Kernersville features local artists:

Jodie Crandall...

Jewelry Artist/Philosopher By Gary Jacques

Jodie Crandall, a jewelry artist for 4 ½ years with a wonderful life philosophy, has found her niche at Eclection in Kernersville. Jodie started working with individual jewelry by learning about vintage designers. “It’s engaging to put historical things together.” Crandall is originally from Michigan and came to North Carolina with her family. She bought and owned a restaurant that closed in 2008. Jodie was a manager at Green Valley Grill in Greensboro. She also had a successful career in fund development in the non-profit sector. The mother of two children, Ali - 21, and Don - 24, Jodie has witnessed the creative world from a different perspective. Ali is autistic and teaches Jodie the joy of sensing art with appreciation and awe. Don has

Down syndrome and provides Jodie with a positive outlook on everyday life. In 2010, Jodie went back to college. She has a Master’s degree in English Literature from UNCG and a second Master’s in Women’s Studies. Jodie is passionate about both and has blended her life lessons into art. “This is my view, which I consider art.” Her customers are all ages, ranging up to over 70 years “young.” Crandall believes that the jewelry pieces are a way to connect with people over time. “We remember when someone else wore that piece.” Crandall loves her customers, who share an appreciation for historic jewelry pieces. Jodie states: “This holds true of other women who wore these pieces through history. It’s all new. Just because something isn’t perceived as perfect or new, we don’t throw it away.” Jodie has a unique life philosophy that translates to her art. “Life is a singular experience.” Continued on page 14

Jodie Crandal

Continued from Page 12

Her jewelry is art. “There isn’t a piece I can replicate.” Her children help Jodie see creativity as an expression of life. “If we pick up our stuff and move about on the “landscape” of all of the possibilities of life, instead of just planting ourselves in one “reality”......., we see a lot of beautiful things.” Jodie’s jewelry gives her the privilege to make beauty out of historical pieces. Each new piece becomes someone else’s new beginning of history. Old rhinestones can be used to expand a wardrobe without being frivolous. Old religious medals reveal the owner had a spiritual connection to their life. Art Deco rock crystals are like diamonds. Vintage pieces have unique detail and are made to last. They can easily capture Jodie’s imagination. She attempts to make pieces with options. Jodie’s charm bracelets are reasonably priced. She stops at antique and thrift stores for creative ideas, as well as to make purchases. Jodie loves long necklaces. The possibilities are endless. Jodie’s space at Eclection includes a fallen tree from her yard now holding her unique jewelry pieces. Christine Federico, Eclection Owner and 2017 Kernersville Chamber of Commerce Small Business Person of the Year, provides a positive atmosphere for Jodie’s artwork. “Chris believes that nothing is impossible.” Eclection, located at 221 North Main Street in Kernersville, boasts the most amazing artists and Vintage Collections in the Triad. With everything being unique and one of a kind, Eclection offers fabulous jewelry, beautiful apparel, wonderful décor, and items that you never knew existed! Grab a cup of coffee at the Inspiration Lounge or sip on some wine while strolling through the store! Don’t forget beer and wine tastings, and the upstairs lounge Breathe. Snack on local cheeses, olives, baked goods and breads, or choose from delicious take home goods at the pantry. Hours: M-Th 10am-8 pm; F and Sa 10 am-midnight. Barbecue!

There is one word, one that you would think would be there somewhere, that you will not find at Bib’s Downtown in Winston-Salem: barbecue. Well, that may not be true. It is mentioned in one place and that is on a 20-foot banner that reads Barbecue Pit Masters Championship from Mobile, Alabama. Yes, that cooking competition on television. Bib’s Downtown won it in 2013. But, just because you do not see the word, it is technically still barbecue, at least in the strictest sense of the word. Partners Mark Little, Robert Moreau, and Ricky Seamon started Bib’s Downtown at 675 W 5th Street in downtown Winston-Salem in December 2008. It was an avenue for Mark and partners to explore a different kind of smoked meats. Notice I did not say barbecue. Mark is an artist by trade. He was a graphic illustrator for 25 years. He still paints in his off time when he is not going to his grandchildren’s activities or just having them around the house. Mark said that he is teaching them all – all girls – how

to cook pit-smoked meats. He started a catering business just prior to starting Bib’s. But, he’s no stranger to food. His father and grandfather were both butchers and they cured their own country ham. His aunts were both bakers. So, he has been cooking his entire life. Bib’s specializes in pulled pork, not chopped as most others around town do. “You’ll find no cleavers here,” says Mark. “Bib’s is really old school with house made sauces and rubs, and meat cooked on real wood stoves – not gas stoves. The sides and desserts are all house made, as well. These are my family’s recipes.” And, you can tell he is proud of that; why would he not?

Bib’s

Bib’s cooks the whole pork butt for 24 hours and then they pull the entire thing. When they finish with that, they bring in another whole butt. Besides the pulled pork, Bib’s has become known for their ribs. They are St. Louis-cut ribs and with a house made rub and sauce, Mark says, “I’d put them up against anyone in town.” When asked about the “Eastern vs. Western” debate that goes on with conventional barbecue in North Carolina, Mark says, “it’s neither Eastern nor Western. It’s ‘Bestern.’” He also says that they don’t use the word “barbecue” because of the stigma it carries; Eastern, Western, chopped and so on. Also on the menu are their jumbo wings,

which are five whole wings smoked and doused in your choice of sauce. They have grilled wraps, beef brisket - in which Bib’s was one of the first places in town to cook, and smoked turkey. There are specialty salads and burgers and sandwiches of all varieties. The sides at Bib’s will not disappoint, either. They have the conventional red and white slaw, potato salad, house made mac ‘n’ cheese, collards, green beans, “twice fries” which are, as the name suggests, fried twice and seasoned with the rub used to season the meats. Finally, Bib’s Beans which are cooked in a pot with three different types of meat, four different peppers and four different beans along with a sweet and

LAZY BIRD BROWN ALE FROM

BIRDSONG

BREWING COMPANY

From Tim: We had this beer on The Less Desirables recently, and we also had Birdsong in the studio for an upcoming episode of Sipping NC: The Art of Drinking podcast. The guys at Birdsong know how to brew good beer. Even my least favorite of their brews were in the 4.0 out of 5 range. That’s pretty good. By far, my favorite beer from them was the Lazy Bird Brown Ale. Lazy Bird is drinkable no matter the season and no matter the weather. Tasting more like a porter without being as heavy as one, you can easily mow the lawn and have one of these as you could sitting by the fire when it’s snowing outside. Great roasted flavor with hints of dark chocolate and robust coffee notes, the rich dark colored beverage is sure to knock your socks off. Birdsong is doing great work in Charlotte and this beer is proof of that. Spencer Davis is owner of his family’s company, City Beverage, which has been selling fine beer and wine since 1946. They’re located at 915 Burke Street in WinstonSalem and on the web at www.citybeverage. com. Tim Beeman is co-owner, co-host and producer of The Less Desirables Podcast and The Less Desirables Podcast Network ft. The Less Desirables, Fan Interference, The Beer Dads, The Man Who Ate the Town and Sipping NC: The Art of Drinking podcasts.
