HELPING CHILDREN  HEAL  AND  CONNECT   THROUGH  THE  POWER  OF  TOUCH       About  Tui  Na  pressure  massage   Tui  Na,  sometimes  called  ‘Chinese  massage’,  is  an  oriental  massage  therapy  that  has   been  used  since  ancient  times.  It  is  a  division  of  traditional  Chinese  medicine  and   considered  in  China  to  be  of  equal  importance  and  effectiveness  as  that  of  acupuncture   or  herbal  medicine.  It  has  an  extensive  tradition  as  a  holistic  healing  art,  with  no  negative   side  effects.     Tui  Na  uses  the  traditional  Chinese  medical  theory  of  the  flow  of  internal  energy,  called   Qi,  through  the  meridians  as  its  basic  therapeutic  orientation.  Through  the  application  of   massage  and  manipulation  techniques  Tui  Na  seeks  to  establish  a  more  harmonious  flow   of  energy,  allowing  the  body  to  heal  itself  naturally.  In  Western  medicine  terms  Chinese   system  of  meridians  tracks  major  arteries,  nerves  and  lymphatic  vessels,  and  many  of  the   meridian  massage  points  correspond  to  nerve  bundles  or  muscle  trigger  points.

In addition  to  being  used  to  address  physical  problems  and  chronic  pain  conditions  and   sports  injuries  -‐  all  conditions  that  in  the  West  would  be  treated  by  osteopathy,   chiropractic  and  physiotherapy  –  Tui  Na  is  also  used  widely  in  China  to  address  chronic   problems  such  as  headaches,  migraines,  constipation,  irritable  bowel  syndrome  and   sleep  problems.  It  is  thought  to  balance  the  autonomic  nervous  system  by  reducing   anxiety,  aggressiveness  and  irritability  (‘fight  or  flight’  sympathetic  responses)  and   increasing  relaxation  (‘rest  and  digest’  parasympathetic  responses).  Regular  and  targeted   massage  and  touch-‐therapy  in  general  has  been  shown  to  stimulate  the  senses  (touch,   hear,  feel,  smell  and  see)  and  blood  flow;  regulate  sleep,  digestion  and  mood;  stimulate   liver  and  kidney  activity;  stimulate  production  of  serotonin  and  melatonin  and  lead  to   improved  regulation  of  cortisol  and  stress  levels.

Tui  Na’s  potential  for  treating  symptoms  of  autism   Ti  Na  massage  is  not  claimed  to  be  a  cure  for  autism!  However,  based  on  many  parental   reports,  as  well  as  many  positive  studies  on  related  touch-‐therapies  and  massage   therapies  that  are  based  on  similar  principles  (see  references  below)  Tui  Na  massage   therapy  has  the  potential  to  improve  and  reduce  many  of  the  disabling  symptoms  that   are  part  of,  or  often  accompany  autism.  Many  of  the  parents  who  have  attended  the   training  and  implemented  regular  daily  massage  at  home  have  reported  improvements   in  sleep,  social  skills,  stress  levels,  outbursts,  speech,  repetitive  behaviour,  sensory  and   digestive  problems.  In  addition,  practicing  this  massage  daily  can  further  strengthen  the   special  bond  that  parents  have  with  their  child,  and  so  reduce  parental  stress  and   improve  their  own  welbeing.   As  Tui  Na  massage  is  holistic  with  no  reported  negative  side  effects  it  can  be  used   effectively  in  combination  with  conventional  autism  support  strategies  and  behavioural   and  other  therapies.       Many  studies  have  shown  that  children  and  adults  with  autism  can  react  very  well  to   touch,  providing  it  is  regular,  structured  and  predictable  unlike  the  random  touch  that   occurs  in  social  situations  and  is  often  very  problematic  for  them.     Tui  Na  massage  therapy  for  autism  has  been  developed  by  Leonid  Rozman,  through  his   desire  to  support  his  own  autistic  son’s  development  and  improve  his  quality  of  life.     Prior  to  developing  this  autism-‐specific  Tui  Na  therapy,  Leonid  had  over  13  years  of   experience  in  Eastern  philosophies  and  bodywork,  with  Tui  Na  massage  in  particular.  He   graduated  from  the  Asante  Academy  of  Chinese  medicine,  affiliated  with  Middlesex   University,  and  went  onto  develop  the  therapy  now  taught  at  Tui  Na  Centre,  which  he   Treating   Autism   is   a   registered   charity   run   by   parents   and   carers   of   children   with   autism.   The   information   on   this   flyer   is   for   general   purposes   only   and   should   not   be   construed   as   medical   advice   nor   as   an   endorsement   of   any   particular   products,   interventions  or  their  providers.  Treating  Autism  does  not  take  any  responsibility  or  liability  for  any  decision  taken  as  a  result  of   the  information  contained  herein  or  the  external  links  provided.  If  you  need  medical  advice,  please  seek  it  from  a  suitably  qualified   practitioner.        www.treatingautism.org.uk

Feedback from  parents  who  have  been  using  Tui  Na  massage       Nicole:  Fantastic  course  and  insight  I  love  everything  this  course  stands  for  and  is  trying   to  achieve!  I  have  completed  the  course,  and  continue  to  carry  out  the  massage  at  home   with  positives  all  round!  I'm  very  excited  about  the  results,  long  term,  for  life,  this   wonderful,  logical,  massage  has  introduced  to  me  and  my  son.  This  is  the  way  we  should   be  pushing  autism  therapy  forward  in  this  country  in  my  opinion.  Sincere  and  passionate   hosts  and  founders  of  the  course  Leonid  and  Sanya  x  I  can't  praise  them  or  its  objectives   enough  x     Jaroslawa:  I  first  want  to  say  that  I  didn´t  know  that  the  day  I  meet  Leonid  will  change   my  whole  approach  to  the  difficulties  of  my  son.  Although  his  difficulties  are  not  that   severe,  he  has  Special  Educational  Needs  Statement  and  requires  full  time  assistant  in   the  school  (currently  5  years  old  in  the  reception  class).  And  this  is  exactly  where  Leonid,   with  his  special  bond  with  children,  made  me  see  that  I  can  achieve  what  he  has   achieved  with  his  son.  I  do  struggle  with  the  time  as  well  and  I  spoke  about  it  with  Leonid   during  his  follow  up  visits  but  on  the  other  hand,  is  there  any  short  cut  to  the  problems   of  our  children?  Massage  is  our  special  time  with  Mishko,  we  try  to  talk,  we  laugh  and   sometimes  struggle  but  we  are  very  intensely  together.  I  see  direct  benefits:  his  sleep   improved  almost  immediately,  he  communicates  better  and  I  am  getting  reports  of   improved  attention  from  the  school.  We  are  only  at  the  beginning  but  I  am  going  to   continue...  and  besides,  you  want  to  meet  Leonid,  massage  is  only  part  of     what  he  will  give  you.  I  would  go  to  see  his  workshop,  talk  to  him  personally  about  your   child  and  then  take  next  steps;  it  is  easy  and  fair  approach.     Candy:  Of  course  he  spoke!  It  lowered  his  stress.  The  Tui  Na  Massage  I  did  on  my   daughter  and  husband  lowered  their  stress  and  their  communication  improved   dramatically.  Our  autistic  kids  are  filled  with  so  much  stress  that  is  caused  by  anxiety  that   it's  no  wonder  they  have  problems  with  words.  I  know  that  this  is  very  controversial  but  I   hope  that  more  autistics  will  have  access  to  this  amazing  plant.  Just  imagine  if  you  could   get  your  kid  off  of  their  anti-‐anxiety  medication!!!!  Used  correctly  this  can  be  powerful  in   changing  lives  for  the  better.     Will  your  child  lose  his  special  gifts?  No,  my  daughter  is  still  and  amazing  artist.  Her   talent  has  not  diminished  in  any  way.  But  she  is  A  LOT  HAPPIER,  and  enjoying  life.  If   anything,  she  has  more  focus  and  able  to  put  her  "ducks  in  a  row".  Sensory  issues  -‐   reduced  40%.  Fear  and  anxiety  -‐  gone.  Tantrums  -‐  gone.  Sleep  -‐  ALL  NIGHT  LONG!!!!   (What  would  you  do  with  a  good  night's  sleep???)  Interaction  with  others  -‐  increased   70%.  Social  skills  -‐  increased  70%.  Food  issues  -‐  gone.  Flexibility  -‐  increased  90%.   Come  and  see  for  yourself  how  this  class  could  transform  your  child  and  family   Treating   Autism   is   a   registered   charity   run   by   parents   and   carers   of   children   with   autism. If  you  need  medical  advice,  please  seek  it  from  a  suitably  qualified   practitioner.        www.treatingautism.org.uk

dynamics! I  would  like  to  thank  Leonid  Rozman  for  giving  me  the  best  Mother's  Day  gift   ever  -‐  my  Daughter  Alexis.  Now  don't  get  me  wrong,  I  have  always  "had"  her,  but  not   always  had  access  TO  her.  This  was  the  first  Mother's  Day  that  Alexis  truly  gave  of  herself   and  did  not  demand  her  own  way  through  her  schedule.  Normally,  Alexis  and  Daddy  go   to  the  Tacoma  Mall  and  play  Pokemon  in  a  league.  In  years  past,  Mother's  Day  would   have  had  to  take  a  back  seat  to  this  schedule.  This  year,  Alexis  accepted  that  league  was   canceled  and  her  and  I  went  for  a  walk  in  the  park  instead.  We  had  a  lovely  walk  and  a   special  time  together.  Hands  down,  no  other  treatment  has  brought  Alexis  to  such  a   flexible  state.     For  the  last  7-‐8  weeks  I  have  been  treating  my  husband  and  oldest  daughter  and  I  have   seen  an  80-‐90%  decrease  in  their  autistic  symptoms!  The  latest  thing  I  have  noticed  is   that  my  daughter  is  now  picking  up  on  social  and  emotional  cues!  This  has  literally   transformed  the  dynamics  of  our  family  in  such  a  positive  way  that  I  am  aching  to  share   with  the  world  and  hopefully  help  other  families  achieve  the  same  results.  Thank  you!   Alexis:  "Mommy,  I'm  so  glad  you  are  giving  me  these  treatments."   Me:  "You  are?  Why?"   Alexis:  "Because  things  are  better."   Me:  "They  are?  How?"   Alexis:  "All  the  pain  is  gone."   Knife.  In.  Heart.     Beanny:  A  training  course  that  actually  makes  sense  and  is  full  of  logic   After  the  course  I  went  home  and  practised  on  my  6  yr  old  whom  has  very  complex   needs.  He  constantly  curls  his  toes  under  one  another.  I  applied  pressure  on  a  certain   point  on  his  foot  and  they  instantly  uncurled  just  like  the  fab  teacher  said  they  would.   Fab,  fab,  fab.     Kathryn:  We  had  this  amazing  training  today  at  Special  Yoga  London  with  Leonid.  It  was   a  full,  very  comprehensive  day.  Even  though  there  was  a  lot  of  information  to  cover,  it   was  broken  down  to  very  manageable  segments.  Leonid  was  very  attentive  to  all  of  us  to   make  sure  we  understood  all  the  techniques,  and  he  provided  written  materials  so  we   could  concentrate  on  learning  the  technique.  At  the  end  of  the  session,  I  feel  very   confident  in  using  Tui  Na  massage  with  the  children  with  special  needs  I  work  with.   For  anyone  that  works  with  this  population,  or  parents  and  family  of  someone  with   special  needs,  this  course  provides  invaluable  training.  I  would  recommend  it  very  highly   to  you  all.  Please  take  time  to  watch  the  videos  and  please,  please  grab  the  opportunity   to  meet  Leonid  and  learn  more  about  this  wonderful  therapy.     Nela:  Definitely  the  best  and  most  beneficial  of  all  the  courses  I've  participated  to  within   last  7  years.  Apart  from  being  great  experts  in  the  field  of  Tui  Na  massage  techniques,   Treating   Autism   is   a   registered   charity   run   by   parents   and   carers   of   children   with   autism. If  you  need  medical  advice,  please  seek  it  from  a  suitably  qualified   practitioner.        www.treatingautism.org.uk

these two  people  are  so  nice  and  kind,  patient  and  really  ready  to  help  whenever  you   need  any  kind  of  advice  and  support.  I  was  so  lucky  to  meet  them  last  summer  and  since   then  have  been  following  their  courses  and  presentations  both  on  Facebook  and   especially    live  whenever  they  visit  Croatia  and  Split.  This  simple  technique,  regularly   done  with  children  on  the  spectrum  gives  obvious  results  quite  soon  and  with  time  and   practice  make  you  and  your  child  more  content  and  relaxed,  which  is  the  most  precious   improvement  you  can  imagine.  Thank  you  Sanja  and  Leonid,  looking  forward  to  seeing   you  this  summer.     Nermina:  We  had  the  privilege  of  having  a  workshop  exclusively  done  for  us.  Every  time   our  son  receives  the  massage  it  works  wonders  for  him.  We  highly  recommend  Tuina   Centre.  It  is  difficult  to  find  time  to  actually  do  the  massage  however  when  you  see  the   benefits  you  realise  it  must  be  included  in  your  normal  daily  routine  as  it  is  more  than   worthwhile.     Keryann:  I  have  done  the  son  rise  program,  ABA,  gluten/casein  free  diet,  homeopath,   Chinese  herbs,  bio  care  supplements,  reflexology,  cranial  osteopathy  etc.  over  the  years   for  my  17  year  old  son.  Last  Saturday  I  went  to  a  Tui  Na  demonstration  session  in   London.  Leonid  treated  my  son  today.  He'd  had  a  bad  day  at  school  and  left  something   there.  I  was  thinking  this  treatment  is  not  going  to  go  well.  BUT  it  was  like  watching  an   angel  at  work.  This  total  connection  he  gave  to  my  son,  gentle  talking,  love,     understanding  and  compassion  was  beautiful  to  watch  and  the  trust  my  son  gave  him  in   a  matter  of  minutes,  was  literally  mind  blowing.  This  was  witnessed  my  husband  and   therapist  too.  We  were  in  totally  wonderment.  We  are  literally  buzzing.  He  gave  us  clear   easy  to  follow  instruction  to  follow  and  use  ourselves.  So  I  would  totally  urge  you  to  try   this.  The  video  clips  really  don't  show  how  wonderful  Leonid  and  his  therapy  is.  If  you  are   pondering,  don't  ponder  anymore.  Go  for  it.  My  only  regret  is  not  having  met  him  years   ago.  Leonid  Sanja.  Thank  you  both.  From  the  very  bottom  off  my  heart.  xxx     Sanela:  As  a  part  of  his  humanitarian  work,  Leonid  Rozman  was  giving  an  intensive  two   week  parent  training  in  Tui  Na  massage  in  2013  in  Sarajevo,  Bosnia  and  Herzegovina.  We   were  impressed  by  his  dedication  and  patience.  Although  most  of  our  children  had   severe  autism  and  similar  disorders,  which  made  us  doubt  that  they  would  cooperate,   after  initial  massages,  they  were  literally  leaping  from  the  door  to  the  massage  table.   Many  parents  learnt  basic  techniques  and  reported  improvements  in  their  child's  sleep,   digestive  problems  and  general  mood.  We  are  looking  forward  to  continuing  our   cooperation  with  Leonid  and  Sanja!
