FISHING ADVENTURE by Denis Isbister

a resident old-timer tipped us

Growing up out west, my fishing addiction began with family trips in eastern Nevada, chasing trout in small creeks and high desert reservoirs. As I grew older, the urge to find more remote destinations drove me to far-reaching places, but I’ve come to realize that it’s not always about the crazy fish and remote travel, but bringing it back to old-school adventure. I couldn’t help but jump on a recent opportunity to fish in eastern Nevada; I wanted to see pockets of Nevada I hadn’t seen in 20 years. We began in Elko, backpacking into Lamoille Canyon to chase brook and native mackinaw trout in the pristine alpine lakes the Rubies are known for, fished for largemouth bass on the Ruby Marsh, and rounded out the trip with a visit to the extremely remote Jarbidge Wilderness Area. The short time I spent here really brought back some good memories with my grandpa — everything smelled and looked the exact same. We visited the Jarbidge Trading Post for some live bait, and

started working the creek for hours. As the day progressed, we caught tons of red band rainbows, but were still missing out on the prized bull. We plowed our way through the marsh, crossing the creek countless times and carefully navigating through the willows, eventually posting up near a giant beaver dam and cast into a massive pond. It worked! We set the hook and a bull was on! It was a small trout, but a beautiful trophy that we celebrated with pics before releasing. won’t ever take me 20 years to get back to the basics again! ANGLER’S DELIGHT Take a crack at getting your name on the highly coveted list of trout masters, or the IGFA Royal Trout Slam. Only a couple hundred have secured their spot on this catch and release list, reeling in all seven trout required. Fisherman have traveled all over the western United States to snatch all seven trout on the list, but here’s an insider pro tip we can all rest easy with: You can reel in all seven within the state of Nevada.
