COLLEGE PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Term 2 is well and truly underway and I would like to take this opportunity to remind students that exam time is fast approaching. Year 11 students will begin exams on Monday the 4th of June, Year 10 students will have their first exam on Thursday the 7th of June and Year 12 exams begin on Tuesday the 12th of June. This two week period marks the end of semester ones work and it is expected that all students will prepare well for their exams and be at the exam room on time with the required equipment. I would also like to remind all students that they are required to do set exams unless they have a medical certificate and in this case exams will be rescheduled for a later date. Many students have been on educational excursions this term and I am always pleased to hear the positive reports afterwards. Unit 3 Biology students visited the Gene Technology Access Centre in Melbourne during the second week of term where they experienced firsthand how to identify cells that are immune to disease. They also conducted a number of experiments that will assist them in remembering the knowledge they have been learning in class. A number of Outdoor Ed classes have been out hiking and the students in these classes have planned for extreme weather conditions, organised their meals and carried out risk assessment before departing. Year 12 Legal Studies students went to Canberra at the end of term 1 and, among other things, were present when our involved our local member was ejected from the chamber! Year 11 Legal Studies Students spent four days in Melbourne, learning to travel around on public transport to get to a whole range of venues including the footy (Richmond West Coast), Parliament, Supreme and County Courts, a mock trial, city watch-house, the Old Melbourne Gaol (“ghost tour”), a play and heaps of other cool stuff. A real highlight was meeting people from overseas at the accommodation in South Yarra. Students get to make their own lunches and enjoy lots of other food, including a Vietnamese banquet. VCE Drama students got to see “Boy Girl Wall” in Melbourne which they rated the best play ever! (It is coming to Sale and Stratford in June so if you get the chance to see it, you will love it too). These types of learning experiences help us to engage and encourage our students to extend their learning beyond the classroom. They provide an opportunity for the students to experience first hand the types of employment opportunities that exist and hopefully encourage them to continue with their studies. This year’s College Production, “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” is well under way. Students from across the college have been rehearsing on Tuesday nights and will be performing the play from Tuesday the 24th to the 27thof July. Put this one in your calendar. College Review 2012 is our year of annual review when the college undergoes its regular review. The review is undertaken both by the staff within the school and by an external reviewer. One of the important parts of the review process is a parent forum in which our reviewer, Graeme Seamer who is employed by Monash University, meets with open forums of parents to get your thoughts about what our College is doing well and what we can do better. We are hoping to run both a daytime and an evening forum and while dates are yet to be finalised they will be on either June 5, 6 or July 24. Details will be advised by direct mail out once they have been finalised. I hope as many parents as possible can make themselves available for these sessions as you input gives us a valuable and different perspective. Regards, Sue Coffey Senior Campus College Principal
