Mayor’s Message Welcome to the Summer 2011 edition of our Parks and Recreation Active Living Guide. Please use the guide to find out more about our high quality programs on offer this summer and new initiatives for healthy living. Please keep the guide handy, it covers the time period of June to September 2011.
“On behalf of Council I encourage you to explore and take advantage of our parks and our recreation facilities. As we head into Centennial 2012 there is much to celebrate here in the Township.”
2011 is off to a great start with our well-attended and popular 5k run, the Victoria Curling Classic, featuring Canada’s top curlers, and the completion of our comprehensive upgrade of Archie Browning Sports Centre. Did you know that the Sports Centre will celebrate its 50th birthday this June? On June 29th, 1961, Grace Patrick, widow of Lester Patrick, officially opened the centre. What is it they say about life starting at 50? We will be having a celebration this fall for this milestone so stay tuned for it! Both our top notch facilities and our wonderfully diverse parks provide the opportunities to pursue an active healthy lifestyle. Whether your interests take you indoors to our pool, fitness centre and skating/curling rink, or outdoors to Saxe Point, Gorge or McCaulay Park, we are blessed with an abundance of choice here in Esquimalt. Speaking of parks, you should know that the restoration of the Japanese Garden at Esquimalt Gorge Park (one of the oldest Japanese Gardens in North America) is continuing and I encourage everyone to visit the park and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. The ornamental stream has been extended and two new bridges have been added. In addition, a traditional Japanese entrance gate has been added as well as a new sitting area to contemplate the tranquility of the garden. Improvements will be continuing in phases, subject to funding. Behind our great parks and recreation program is an innovative and dedicated staff. Creating engaging recreation programs, planning community events, and maintaining our beautiful parks are just some of the things staff members accomplish on a daily basis. On behalf of Council I encourage you to explore and take advantage of our parks and our recreation facilities. As we head into Centennial 2012 there is much to celebrate here in the Township. Yours truly,
Mayor Barb Desjardins.
