The buses will run on renewable energy so they will be entirely emission-free. In addition to the fully electric Volvo 7900 Electric, the Volvo Buses range of electrified vehicles includes hybrid models and electric hybrids (plug-in hybrids). To date, the company has sold more than 3,600 electrified buses globally.

he Iberian transport company Vitrasa (Avanza T Group) presented last August 24 new buses for the renewal of its fleet consisting of 124 vehicles. The vehi-
cles are all built on MAN chassis with the New City bodywork produced in Spain by Castrosua. The supply consists of 20 units in a length of 12 meters and 4 18-meters articulated buses. The first are fitted with 26 seats, two wheelchairs platforms and a room for 80 standing passengers while the articulated ones have 42 seats, two wheelchair platforms and 108 standing persons. The main innovation of the articulated buses is the translucent bellows at the top so as to enhance the brightness in the rear part of the vehicle. The on-board equipment includes air conditioning, anti-fog, free internet access, several USB sockets and half a dozen video surveillance cameras.

12-meter buses are all manufactured in the Shenzen plant. It is the first fleet of pure large electric buses which are to go into service in Italy. The tender was awarded at the end of 2016 and the buses are mostly intended for the Gruppo Torinese Trasporti (GTT). Twenty of these vehicles are to go into service in Turin, while the remaining five will be managed by Servizi Urbani Novaresi (SUN). The buses will operate on urban transport networks linking the city centers with suburban areas. BYD will also supply full service support for 10 years. The vehicles can accommodate up to 77 passengers, including 21 seated and a wheelchair.
They have a range of 310 km and a consumption of 104 kWh per 100 km. Two traditional charging stations have been installed in the GTT warehouse. The livery was designed by the students of the painting school of the Albertina Academy of Fine Arts in Turin. The funding for the purchase of these vehicles amount to about 15 million euros (13.5 managed by the Piedmont Region and 1.5 from the City of Turin). «The 23 buses costed around 8.5 million euros», stated GTT. «The remaining amount is available for the award of other tenders for smaller electric buses, exactly 6.5- and 9-meter buses. With these two new tenders, which are still to be awarded, another twenty buses, designed also for other Piedmont cities, will be purchased».

The 300th Otokar bus has been delivered to AMAG Mobility, in Italy, together with other nine vehicles. It represents an important milestone for Mauri Bus System rom September, citizens of Alexandria, F Italy, can enjoy a more comfortable urban public transport on board the new 12-meter buses. The ten Kent C are produced by Otokar and delivered in record time by Mauri Bus System, the exclusive distributor of the Turkish brand in Italy. The vehicles were purchased with own funds by AMAG Mobility, the company that took the place of the bankrupted ATM Alessandria last April. These buses have a transport capacity of 26 seated passengers plus 82 standing, a wheelchair platform in the front center door area and a manual ramp. The engine is
the Cummins Euro 6 (278 hp) coupled to the Voith Diwa.4 automatic transmission. The buses are fitted with an air conditioning system, path indicators and an 8-cam video surveillance system. With this order Mauri Bus System has reached the target of the 300 Otokar buses delivered to Italy, a result that demonstrates the market positioning and the appreciation of national operators. For Amag Mobility (85% owned by Line Spa, Zoncada Group) the new Otokar buses represent an important step towards the upgrading of the service (2.3 million euros the investment) that follows the interventions already made before the summer, starting from the reconditioning of the bus fleet, and the start of the operational recovery of the company.

SMRT Automotive Services, a repair company that belongs to the leading provider of multimodal transport in Singapore, SMRT Corporation. Following this agreement, SMRT Automotive Services will become Masats’ Authorized Service Provider in Singapore. The Iberian company will offer regular training to SMRT employees, who will perform maintenance and repairs on their equipment for both their own and others’ vehicles. In 2001, Masats began to supply equipment for the local marke. More than 800 vehicles in circulation in Singapore have Masats doors, mainly doors that open inward and electric sliding doors. With this agreement, the Iberian manufacturer reinforces its services in the Asian market and secures its relationship with local operators.

Truck & Bus. In order to fulfil the requirements of the law, MAN incorporated components manufactured from high-strength steel into the vehicle skeleton. This material gives the superstructure the necessary strength and ensures that the energy produced during a rollover can be optimally absorbed. This entails only marginal changes to the interior fittings. Safety while driving is another aspect that MAN pays particular attention to. For this reason, transit buses are equipped with standard ABS and only optionally ESP for trucks, automatic lights and wipers as well as tyre pressure monitoring system (TPM).
MAN is taking the first steps into the production of electric buses.. The roadmap includes the launch in 2018 of a pre-series bus version of a battery-electric vehicle and a field trial of a demo fleet in collaboration with various European operators. Series production of a 100% electric city bus is instead expected by the end of 2019. “MAN aspires to use an established depot charging technology via CCS interface,” explained the German manufacturer. A survey of about 200 European customers has also been conducted. “The feedback we received enabled us to understand that in everyday use it is more important to ensure a flexible and uninterrupted service without interim charging. To do this, MAN uses a modular concept that allows to select and combine the number of storage modules. As far as engines is concerned , MAN has taken advantage of emission control changes to revise the range of propulsion systems. With the optimized driveline, engines now offer more torque and power, while at the same time reducing fuel consumption. The 420-hp D2676 LOH Euro 6c engine will soon replace the 400 hp D2066 LOH version both in MAN and Neoplan touring coaches as well as in the chassis. It should be noted that for the first time, the D26 can now be operated by hydrotreated vegetable oils (HVOs). All intercity buses and touring coaches are available with new safety and comfort systems: Active Cruise Control (ACC), emergency Electric Brake Assist (EBA) and Lane Guard System (LGS) for lane monitoring. The light/rain sensor is being offered as an option from the beginning of 2017.

And it will be one of these models to be showcased at the ADL stand. The Enviro500 double-decker, whose modular design has been tailored to the demanding PostAuto requirements. In the traditional Swiss postal yellow livery, it is 12.9 meters long, has three doors
and two staircases for the access to the upper floor. In the air-conditioned interior it can accommodate up to 79 seats. The vehicles, all belonging to Class I, are purpose-designed as city and regional buses. The other model showcased is an Enviro200 single-deck bus with left-hand drive. It is a vehicle intended for the fleet of the Abellio transport company owned by the Dutch railways. The 10.4m long vehicle repre sents just one of the several length options for the Enviro200 series which ranges from 9 to 12 metres and can seat up to 46 passengers. Lightness, efficiency and manoeuvrability are the plus of Enviro200. «In continental Europe, ADL expects a gradual entry into the market to ensure that all vehicles are fully supported by the company’s after-sales services», stated the British manufacturer. «These include the powerful AD Connected tool that allows engineers to better plan maintenance and further reduce the already low Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of the Enviro range» .

Already available in the range of Urbanway city buses, methane gas-powered engines represent, according to Iveco Bus, “the only truly mature, affordable, oilfree, relevant and responsive solution to respond to the challenges of today’s and tomorrow’s sustainable mobility”. The advantages are particularly remarkable in terms of levels of particulate matter and noise emissions. Using natural gas, particle levels keep close to zero, and NOx emissions are reduced by more than a third. Even noise levels are halved, with a consequent guarantee of silence for drivers, passengers and the outside environment. In addition to this, the Natural Power range is 100% compatible with waste-derived biogas. The environment could furthermore benefit from CO2 savings of up to 95%. The Cummins ISB4.5 engine with a power output of 145 hp (107 kW) and 632 Nm of maximum torque is coupled to the Eaton ESO6206 manual transmission and is mounted longitudinally. It is equipped with rigid front axle, pneumatic suspension and EBS braking system with front discs brakes and rear drum brakes. The model has no retarder. With a width of 2.33 meters and two double-side doors (with manual ramp on the front one), it can accommodate 21 passengers on the Kiel seats plus 35 standing passengers and a wheelchair. On display electric, hybrid and diesel models. The Solaris Urbino 18 electric is 18 meters long and is based on the construction of the new generation Urbino launched in 2014. The vehicle is equipped with a ZF drive axle with integrated electric motors. The energy storage system consists of 240 kWh Solaris High Power batteries. The model on display will be fitted with batteries that can be charged either by means of a plug-in connector or via a roof-mounted pantograph. “What is important for operators,” stated the Polish manufacturer, “is that the new generation of Solaris Urbino electric 18 is not a test version but a mature serial product.” Among the first purchasers, the Cracow-based MPK to whom Solaris sup-

The second vehicle on display is the new Urbino 12 with a serial hybrid drive, one of the 208 hybrid buses ordered by the Belgian operator TEC. These are the first Solaris buses that, in addition to adopting the hybrid unit HybriDrive of the American BAE Systems, use ultra- capacitors technology, known for its reliability, high efficiency and capability of reducing Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). The vehicle is equipped with an electric engine and a 4.5-liter 210-hp Cummins ISB4.5E6 diesel engine. Another product highlight is the new Solaris Urbino 10,5. Built on the basis of a 12-meter Solaris modules, it has been then shortened by 1.5 meters between the first door and the second axle. The wheelbase has been also reduced from 5,900 mm to 4,450 mm. The model on display at the fair is equipped with a 209-hp Cummins ISB6.7E6C engine, but as an alternative a DAF MX11 drive unit is available upon request. Inside it is fitted with 23 seats, a highly efficient air conditioning system, modern LED lighting (amber-coloured) and USB ports on the handrails for charging mobile devices.

lightweight Citea LLE for urban transport and from the compact MidCity midibus through to the touring coaches with three models of the Futura range. The segment of electric buses will be represented by a trio of models: the Citea SLFA181 Electric bus in a never-before-seen version, the Citea SLF-120 Electric model, which will be available for test drive and, in the outside area, a Citea LLE-99 Electric with fast charging station. Long-distance urban services will be represented by the VDL Citea LLE, a lightweight champion in the Citea range. New developments have helped reduce the unladen weight, making it even lighter. The fully equipped 12-meter model weighs less
than 9,000 kg. As well as the unladen weight reduction, together with the Start-Stop function and an integrated regeneration system, a reduction in fuel consumption of between 4% and 8% has been achieved, as compared with the previous generation LLEs. On display the Citea LLE-127, which at a length of 12.7 meters is the longest Citea LLE variant and features three doors. The extended wheelbase offers space for 4 additional seats as compared with the 12-meter variant. Always with regard to city buses, VDL will launch the MidCity, a vehicle that thanks to its compact dimensions (8,061 mm in length), the 70 cm extended wheelbase and the long rear overhang, it is highly manoeuvrable and ideal for transport applications in narrow streets or old city centres. Finally, as far as tourism is concerned, from the untarnished Futura range, VDL will present to the public for the first time the new Futura FHD2-135 with 52+1+1 seats and the Futura FDD2-141, a 14.1-meter double-decker with 74+1+1 seats, which can be a comfortable and adequate transport solution both for the demanding holiday market and for intercity business passengers. The last vehicle on display will be the Futura FHD2106 with 40+1+1 seats.

bus” through the vehicles and products on display. For the e-mobility segment, Volvo Buses will focus on the latest version of its electric offering: the Volvo 7900 Electric bus and the OppCharge charging system. The electric Volvo 7900 entered operation at the beginning of summer 2017 with the first four vehicles in the city of Differdange, Luxembourg. “Since then,” pointed out Volvo Buses, “several other orders have been signed, with Harrogate in England and Malmö in Sweden among the cities that have placed orders for Volvo’s electric buses.” The manufacturer also announced that next year is planning to test fully-electric articulated buses in regular operations in the
hometown of Gothenburg, where 10-and 12-meter electric and electric hybrid buses are already operating. The number of hybrids, electric hybrids and pure electric buses sold by Volvo Buses amount to more than 3,500 units worldwide. In Kortijk, Volvo Buses will also launch several solutions for active safety and autonomous driving, both for urban buses and long-distance models. The “Thinking Bus Simulator” will allow visitors to see in function systems such as Volvo Dynamic Steering (VDS), Pedestrian and Bicycle Tracking System and Bus Stop Docking Concept, amongst others. For those who want to drive the vehicles, the Volvo 7900 Hybrid Articulated and the Volvo 9900 with VDS could be tested. Volvo Buses will exhibit at stand 502 in hall 5.

Setra will present for the first time
internationally the S 531 DT double-decker, of which we generously talked about on BusToCoach Magazine in September, and a trio of specially equipped models (S 515 HDH, S 511 HD and S 415 LE Business). For the Mercedes brand, there will be three world premieres: the Citaro Hybrid urban bus, the new range of Tourismo RHD highdecker touring coaches (see BusToCoach
Magazine in July/August) and the Sprinter City 45 minibus. The Active Brake Assist 4 emergency braking assistance system with pedestrian detection (see BusToCoach Magazine in September) and the new Omniplus On digital assistance services will also be launched. In order not to repeat again what already written about the new Setra S 531 DT and the Mercedes Tourismo RHD, we’ll focus on the Citaro Hybrid. In this case the generic term hybrid hides in fact a specific
solution, never seen before on buses. To understand its meaning, it is useful to remember that Mercedes Benz can boast about 50 years of experience in bus hybrid drive starting from the first OE 302 in 1969 to the Citaro G BlueTec Hybrid in 2007. The latter adopted a serial hybrid drive system with electric motors on the rear wheels, technically ideal for urban transport, but economically too expensive for European transport companies that, in spite of their preference for hybrid buses, chose instead parallel hybrid technologies. Mercedes is back with a solution already
announced last year for Mercedes S Series cars. We’re talking about the Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle (MHEV) system, a 48-volt,
rom 2018, transport companies will F have access to all the information they need in order to use their bus fleet more
efficiently thanks to Omniplus On, a range of digital services that allow networking between vehicle, company and assistance services. Omniplus On integrates existing services such as Fleetboard (for evaluating driving styles, recording travel data, location, maintenance, driving times) with a series of new digital systems. Among them, the Omniplus On Uptime for real-time monitoring of the vehicle conditions, including full sensor technology, which can be downloaded via CAN bus network. There are about thirty functions and components under control, including doors, engine management and exhaust after-treatment cheaper and lighter system in terms of size and weight (only 156 kg more than the diesel version) compared to a full-hybrid bus, but with lower fuel savings. Thanks to the new electrohydraulic steering system, the Citaro Hybrid can reduce fuel consumption by 8% compared to the diesel version. It is equipped with a permanently excited synchronous electric motor with a maximum output of 14 kW and is fitted between New MERCEDES Tourismo RHD

In turn, Remote Bus allows you to access via the WLAN of the bus, therefore on the smartphone of the driver, information about tyre pressure, fuel levels, exterior lighting and the locking status of the doors. Finally, through the new Driver App, the driver is able to carry out all the necessary pre-departure checks on the basis of a checklist provided by the company, which in turn can receive the documentation in advance. Omniplus On will be available from the beginning of 2018 for Mercedes Citaro, Capacity and the new Tourismo buses, as well as for the Setra ComfortClass and TopClass Series 500. They will all be equipped with the “Fleetboard Bus Data Center” telematic services for data transfer.

Its function is to assist the combustion engine, especially when moving off, improving its performance. Hybrid drive branded Mercedes will be available on request on all models of the Citaro range equipped with OM 036 engine, including gas engine versions. Another world debut we’ve not yet talked about is the Sprinter City 45. The minibus previously available with right-hand drive only, and therefore destined for the British market, is now available with left-hand drive for all other European markets and others. It is built on the basis of the Sprinter van with long wheelbase (4,325 mm) and an extended rear overhang so as to reach a total length of 7.36 meters. In this way a fourth row of seats can be added to the raised rear increasing to 13 the number of seats. Added to this is standing room for up to nine passengers in the central low-floor area as well as room for a wheelchair and four folding seats. The power output of the engine can be 105 kW or 120 kW and the City 45 can be requested with a permissible GVW of 5.3 t.
