For more than 200 years, visitors from around the world have made their way to New Hampshire to see the majesty of the White Mountains. However, it’s the western portion of this region that is home to three very distinctive communities: Woodstock, a quintessential, old-fashioned New England town; Lincoln, famous for its abundance of lodging, dining, events, and entertainment; and Franconia Notch, a natural playground of towering mountains and dense forests. In this publication, you’ll find stories that speak to all of the adventures to be had here in the Basecamp of the White Mountains – whether high octane – or low key. After all, it’s the different attractions and nature of these three towns that keep visitors coming back year after year.

Known for skiing at Loon Mountain Resort, this town also leads the way for summer vacation. Often referred to as “the crossroads of the White Mountains,” Lincoln sits at the intersection of Interstate 93 and the Kancamagus Scenic Byway, with North Conway, Lake Winnipesaukee, Littleton, and Plymouth only a short drive away. Exploding with fun and hospitality in all directions, Lincoln is home to attractions and outdoor adventures ranging from water parks to railroad trips.

The Woodstock area is where you find true New Hampshire heritage and lifestyle. The sights, the sounds, the smells, the tastes of this Old New England town transport you to the days before mega-resorts and chain restaurants. It’s a treat to wake up in one of the small inns or bed-and-breakfasts, then take a stroll down Main Street, wander into one of the unique shops, or sit in the park and enjoy your lunch.

FRANCONIA NOTCH An outdoor recreational hot spot,  Franconia Notch is home to 5,000-foot peaks,

raging waterfalls, and granite ledges. With Franconia Ridge in the east and Cannon Mountain to the west, the Notch seems to have cut through these cliffs just for people to play in. Outdoor enthusiasts return every summer to Franconia Notch State Park, where they find all the adventure they can handle, from hiking to fishing to viewing the Old Man of the Mountain’s former home atop Cannon Mountain.

There, “mud” is not only said with a smile – it’s celebrated. That’s because their annual Monster Mud Run, the resort’s own twist on those “mudder runs” everyone seems to be having everywhere, has become a must-do for visitors and locals alike. Why? Possibly because the event is set on the trails of Loon, one of the loveliest spots in the White Mountains (and in a way that spectators can truly see almost all of the fun). Or perhaps it’s because instead of just being a classic mud race, it draws from mountain resort life to be a unique and creative “mud” event. Or maybe it’s because, as the event planners like to say, it’s a “filthy and fast five-K.” Then again, it may just be because getting dirty – really dirty – is just a plain blast. The Monster Mud Run takes place this year on July 12. Participants will start their race outside Loon’s Governor’s Lodge, where they’ll crawl through a set of culverts (and mud), and then sprint up the challenging Kissing Cousins lift line, and from there work their way across the mountain, taking on such things as a “wall puzzle” (which requires team work to get over), more sprints and crawls. Classic mountain life is also worked into the race, which means some challenges you just won’t find at other mudder events. At the “snowmaking boot camp” section of the race, participants must hoist a snowmaking hose on their shoulder and then crawl under barbed wire – all while western

snowmaking hoses are spraying at them. From there, they head to what in the winter is Loon’s Super Pipe, where big tricks get thrown down. This time, though, it is renamed the “Super Puke,” since participants must run up it. No easy feat when you consider the steepness of the trail and of the Super Puke walls. Sound crazy? Make you wonder: who would ever do that? It seems the answer is: plenty of folks. Last year over 300 racers participated in the event, and even more are expected this year. The resort provides showers but many participants end the race by trotting across the street and taking a dip in the Pemigewasset River, a cool, natural and very Western White Mountains way to shake off that mud. On race day, for little kids, a “Mini Mudders” course is set up where kids can get a taste for mud runs in a kinder, gentler (but just as muddy!) way. (and hey, grown ups: no taking credit for “doing a mudder” if you just help your kids through the mini.) Just viewing the event is an event in itself too. The course is set up so viewers can see almost all aspects of it as the racers go along, giving you a chance to see thrills, spills and yes, some seriously dirty people. The whole day wraps up with live music for all, making the entire day feel like a celebration.

On July 6, the annual Loon Mountain Race, a hill foot race (known to regulars as the race that will “take your lunch money and give you an atomic wedgie,”) was named the most competitive hill climb by Runner’s World Magazine. Runners climb a whopping 2,200 vertical in the race, with the final kilometer the steepest and most challenging, taking runners up Walking Boss, a steep ski trail. To make it even more exciting, top placers this year win a spot on the U.S Mountain Running team, and head to the world Championships 10

in Italy. Another great event to endure for the daring and to watch for fans. If you like your tough and sweaty in a kilt, head to Loon for their annual Highland Games, this year Sept. 19-21. There, you can compete in such Scottish fun as sheep herding and caber tossing. And yes, kilts are encouraged. The spectator can have just as much fun there as well, and everyone gets to enjoy the Scottish music, food and more. If all that sounds like too much for you, there are other ways to take in the mountain and “challenge” yourself. First, there’s the beautiful and leisurely option of riding Loon’s gondola to the peak and enjoying lunch or a snack at the Summit Café. There, you’ll enjoy a breathtaking view of the region, and tuck into great food at the same time. And yes, it is okay to do this and then vaguely reference having “summited a peak” on your recent mountain vacation. Loon will keep your secret. Loon also has a popular zip line that takes you up high and across the river for an adventurous thrill. You must be over 50 pounds to participate, and training on site makes it simple, safe and exciting. Bike rentals are available, and you can take a bike path to downtown Lincoln, or loop around past South Peak and back, right at Loon Mountain. Loon’s Aerial Forest Adventure Park is worth a day in itself. There, you’ll take on zip lines and net climbs and more, guided along the up-in-the-air park by pros. The park can be a couple of hour event or an all-day challenge where family members can cooperatively go along or compete to see who can do it the fastest. The park rises above what in the winter is the resort’s natural terrain park. Look for the statue of Paul Bunyan (and take a selfie with him!) And last year, Loon debuted Paul Bunyan’s Backyard, a fun adventure area with inflatables like bounce houses, games and even a Log Jam Maze. With over an acre of logs built into a maze, you can use a punch card to time yourself, once again offering some fun and safe competition for all ages. While the Monster Mud Run takes place only on July 12, all other activities are available all summer long. And if you find yourself there not on mud run day, feel free to roll in some dirt. At Loon, such activity isn’t just appreciated, its celebrated. ● Moira McCarthy is a well known ski, adventure and travel writer who lives in Plymouth, MA. THE “AT” RUNS THROUGH IT Discover the rigor of the Notch as you challenge yourself to trek the Appalachian Trail. The Franconia Ridge Loop is a classic mountain ramble that can be lovely in early fall, with endless, 360-degree views of the surrounding countryside. The hike begins at the Lafayette Place parking area off the Franconia Notch Parkway. Take the Old Bridle Path to Greenleaf Hut, a 2.9-mile climb with some beautiful look-out points along the way. From the hut, the Greenleaf Trail leads to the 5,260-foot summit of Mount Lafayette, 1.1 mile away. The route then follows the Franconia Ridge Trail, one of the most beautiful ridge walks in the east, if not the nation.

Bear with us while we get through this introduction ... It’s the bear necessities. We bear good news. Beary good news. With apologies to Chicago football fans, it’s really all about Da Bears.

Spread: Clark’s Trading Post; inset: Loon Mountain Resort/ Sherri Harkin

Yes, it’s warm weather season in the White Mountains and the bears are back at Clark’s Trading Post in Lincoln. Of course they are. It has been that way for decades. The bears are fun and a little rambunctious at times, but they provide good old-time entertainment for all ages. “It’s been good family entertainment for years,” said Murray Clark, one of the owners and longtime bear showman. And by family, he means extended - well beyond the White Mountains to the regular visitors and those checking out the Trading Post on Daniel Webster Highway for the first time every summer. The history of Clark’s dates back to 1928 with Edward and W. Murray Clark, not with bears, but Eskimo sled dogs. A decade earlier, a trip to Labrador caused them to fall in love with the dogs and they brought some back to New Hampshire. The brothers raised the sled dogs and became so renowned that they were eventually asked to

assist the Allied war effort as another world war raged. Murray’s sister, Maureen, said the initial plan was to use dog sled teams to take out a German heavy water plant in Norway. Teams of hand-picked dogs trained in Iceland, she said, but the mission turned to troops on skis, one of several scenarios outlined for the operation. The dogs stayed around Lincoln—at Ed Clark’s Eskimo Sled Dog Ranch—and numbered about 80 as the 1930s began to wind down. The bears began arriving in 1938, Murray said. “The dogs brought in some tourism traffic, but they realized things were kind of quiet. They needed something to draw the summer visitors—a stopper that they could put on a sign on the side of the road in the hope that people would check it out,” Murray said. The bear show started in 1949. Murray said one of the first tricks was the “Apple Tramway,” a rig that sent apples

to the bears to satisfy visitors’ curiosities about feeding them. “They started to train a small group of cubs for show work,” Murray said. “The show took place at a venue on a small patch of lawn at the Trading Post, where paying customers - at 15 to 20 cents a head - would form a circle.” A small bear would be brought out on a leash. Early tricks involved tricycles, barrels and hoops, he said. Murray joked that another early attraction was to watch the animals drinking “bear beer,” a syrupy, milky concoction. “Imagine, by now, millions have been entertained by Clark’s trained bears,” Murray said. Other features at Clark’s Trading Post include: • Chinese acrobats. • Avery’s Garage— a trip back to a time when you didn’t have to pump your own gas. • The 1884 Pemigewasset (say it three times fast) Hook and Ladder Co. Fire Station. • The Clark History Museum - check out the vintage dog sled. • The Florence Murray Museum - featuring a unique collection of antique games, guns, swords, souvenir china, typewriters, railroad memorabilia and even a two-headed calf. • The Americana Museum - A cross between Antiques Roadshow and American Pickers that would make those who like nostalgia drool. There is even an early snowmobile in the collection. • A Segway park and safari adventure. • A train ride on the White Mountain Central Railroad—a steam-powered journey that takes visitors back in time and over a traditional covered bridge. Talk about pickers ... the bridge was retrieved from Barre, VT, in the mid-1960s. 14

Those who board the train better hold onto their seats, because one never knows when The Wolfman might show up. Murray describes him as, “An ornery old cuss - uglier than a plate of worms,” who never relinquishes an opportunity to stake his claim. No one has yet to pillage The Wolfman’s claim, but the bears always steal the show. As the original Clarks always said, “You haven’t lived until you’ve raised a bear cub within an inch of your home.” Murray said the nine bears currently taking up residence at Clark’s range in age from 2 to about 30. “The bears are the stars of the show,” Murray said. “People come from all over the world to see them and the bears really look forward to showtime. They really have their own way of doing things and, as trainers, we really have to learn to work with what you’ve got.” There is some skill and some comedy. OK, a lot of comedy. “It’s a laugh a minute,” Murray said. Maureen said the spectators seem to pick out their favorites. “The people feel like they know the bears and what tricks they like to perform,” she said. “The bears have their own peculiarities and distinct personalities. Some are sweet and friendly, some a little bit cool. Others are mischievous - real jokesters.” Murray thought about that one for a moment. “As a narrator, I’m sometimes stumped,” he said. Maureen makes two suggestions when it comes to bears - never ever - startle one and always realize how intelligent they are. She also says to come out to Clark’s and experience the bears up close. “The bears are all really solid, good citizens who work hard,” she said. And, of course, all that hard work leads to a pretty good show. ● Chris Dehnel is a veteran journalist who has covered news, sports and business in the Northeast for three decades.

BY MOIRA MCCARTHY [ basecamp: n : a main encampment providing supplies, shelter, and communications for persons engaged in wide-ranging activities, such as exploring, reconnaissance, hunting, or mountain climbing. ]

That’s the official dictionary definition. But when you’re talking New England vacation choices, “basecamp” is easier to define as The Lincoln/Woodstock/Franconia Notch area of the Western White Mountains. That’s right, this region of vast lodging choices—from tents to campgrounds to B and Bs to elegant hotels and more—serves as the ideal basecamp for all your summer activity plans. Whether you’re in the mood for hiking, sightseeing, family attractions, shopping, or adventure, it’s all within easy distance from your basecamp. Consider these day treks from your basecamp this summer. The Kancamagus Highway, considered one of the *mostSIGHTSEEING: beautiful routes in the nation, starts right in Lincoln and stretches

on for 34 miles of scenic views and overlooks, river beds, trails and more. You’re bound to spot some wildlife along the way, and the “Ohmy-gosh” moments are almost endless. Continue on from the other side of the Kancamagus and wind through North Conway, around past Mount Washington (stop for tea at the lovely and historic Mount Washington Hotel), and then curve back through breathtaking Franconia Notch. The loop is a full day of changing beauty that starts and finishes right at your comfortable basecamp. Whether you choose to take the Kancamagus up and back or do the entire loop, you’ll end your day back where you are settled, ready to kick back and check out all your Instragrams. western

▼ FAMILY ATTRACTIONS: Lincoln/Wood*stock/Franconia Notch has the highest con-

centration of family attractions in the state, so you won’t be at a loss for choices or variety. Younger children love the fun of Clark’s Trading Post, where you can take in a Bear Show (and meet their cute little bear cubs), ride on a Segway tour, take on a climbing tower, see a circus show and even ride “blaster boats.” At the Lost River Gorge, families can climb through rock mazes and even mine for jewels. And the Hobo Railroad will take you on a scenic ride along the river and through town. Families that want to find adventure while setting out from their basecamp head to Whale’s Tale for all kinds of wet fun like the “Beluga Boggen,” the “Downpour,” and for those really brave, the “Eye of the storm” ride. At the Flume Gorge, families can experience natural adventure as they climb up and down the amazing gorge, taking in water falls, soaring granite walls and flora and fauna. And at Loon Mountain, families can do it all, from zip lining to mud running (see accompanying story in this magazine). If all that sounds exhausting, no worries: you’re just minutes from your comfortable, homey basecamp, where you can rest up and plan your next exciting trek.

RECREATION: Hiking, bik*ing,OUTDOOR kayaking, swimming; it’s what makes a

mountain trip truly special. And right at the edge of which ever basecamp lodging you choose, you can find it all. For biking (and yes, rentals are readily available if you don’t want to bring your own, even with helmets and child seats), you can choose from the mellow pedal trip to the more challenging. For mellow and lovely, the nine-mile Franconia Notch bike trail is a nice choice, with an easy grade, familyfriendly set-up and beautiful sites along the way. for those who seek challenge. For kayakers and rafters, the Pemigewasset River (“The Pemi” to locals) offers two directions of unique experience. kids your trek this day is to discover history, they might groan. If instead you just bring them along for fun discoveries, they might not even realize they were learning until you’re back at basecamp that night. Some of the most interesting historic spots for forestry and railroads are near basecamp. Both the Hobo Railroad and Clark’s Trading Post have historic information, programs and participatory events. And at the Pemigewasset Historical Society, you can learn a lot about the White Mountain National Forest, now over 100 years old, and then take off into that forest to experience it first hand. Sweeter yet at Fadden’s General Store you can learn all about the history of Maple Sugaring, and then try it out for yourself. Your memories and souvenirs could just be a future school project in the making. So, how to choose which trek is the one for you? By not choosing, because the great thing about basecamp is that since you are so close to your vacation “home,” you don’t have to choose one of these themes: you can do them all. That’s what’s great about basecamp. When everything begins and ends at the same spot each day, visitors are more relaxed (no schlepping your luggage and gear from place to place. There’s just something about actually being able to unpack a suitcase into drawers that makes you feel settled while out on the road). And since the choices in the Lincoln Woodstock area range from the simplest campground to the most luxurious accommodations, visitors can choose the kind of “home basecamp feel” that works best for them, and return to it each day of their vacation. That’s to make you more ready for more experiences. From adventure to history to just plain old-school family fun, it’s all just a hop, skip and jump from basecamp. Lincoln/Woodstock/Franconia Notch. EACH YEAR in the week leading up to Father’s Day, hundreds of thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts head to New Hampshire for what has been known for 91 years now as “Bike Week.” The week of events center around Laconia and Weirs Beach. But bikers in the know “pitch” their base camp in the Lincoln/Woodstock/Franconia Notch region. Here they find themselves in a quieter, more natural surrounding, yet only a quick change down the road to the thick of things. And at this basecamp, they are right smack in the middle of the loop ride, one of the most popular activities of Bike Week. During Bike Week, it’s the norm to find literally hundreds of bikers enjoying lunch or a snack break at popular biker spots like Gordi’s and Woodstock Station. There, they can find outdoor seating and fun, local-feel bars. The bikers who tend to want the “tucked in the mountains” basecamp of the region are those who tend to love Bike Week not just for the camaraderie, but for the journey into nature, that New Hampshire offers bikers. The windy, loopy roads, overlooks and just plain quiet is something a certain type of biker craves—and finds— with a Lincoln/Woodstock/Franconia Notch basecamp stay. They also like the wide variety of lodging offerings in this region, as well as the easy access to all kinds of added activities. Many tend to stay extra days before or after the main Bike Week events, or come back to the area again for more. This year, Bike Week runs from June 14-22. Basecamp will indeed be alive and revving with the sound of those who love to ride deep in the mountains. ●

1910: VISITORS GAZING AT THE OLD MAN OF THE MOUNTAIN Located in the town of Franconia, New Hampshire in the heart of the White Mountains, The Old Man of the Mountain was also known as the Great Stone Face or the Profile. It consisted of a series of five granite cliff ledges on Cannon Mountain that, when viewed from the north, appeared to be the jagged profile of a face. The rock formation was 1,200 feet (370 m) above Profile Lake, and measured 40 feet (12 m) tall and 25 feet (7.6 m) wide. The first recorded mention of the Old Man was in 1805 and its unfortunate demise occurred on May 3, 2003. Photo Courtesy of the Library of Congress
