The Trained Canine The Trained Canine provides the finest in-home dog training in northern New Jersey. Our goal is to help every dog we work with become your best friend for life. Sharing your home with a dog should be one of the most rewarding experiences you'll ever have, but it's not always easy - we can help!
Mentor Trainer for the Animal Behavior College, providing hands-on instruction and supervision to students and aspiring trainers. As a proud member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers, the country's leading organization of professional trainers, I follow their strict ethical standards in my handling of the dogs I work with and in my business dealings with you. The A.P.D.T. also provides many opportunities for continuing my education in the field of canine behavior and psychology. I'm also fortunate to be nearby the nationally renowned St. Hubert's Animal Welfare Center in Madison, NJ, which allows me to attend workshops and seminars by some of the top trainers and behaviorists in the field. The list of luminaries I've been lucky enough to learn from are some of the best and brightest in the field of dog behavior: Jean Donaldson - author of many books on dog training including Culture Clash and Dogs Are From Neptune. Temple Grandin - perhaps the foremost animal behaviorist in the world and author of Animals In Translation. Dr. Karen Overall - the woman who literally wrote the reference book in almost every vet's office, Clinical Behavioral Medicine For Small Animals. Dr. Ian Dunbar - the godfather of science-based training who pioneered a dog-friendly positive approach and the founder of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers. These teachers have shaped my dog-friendly, humane approach to working with dogs. As a dog owner and lover since early childhood I knew early on that working with dogs was my desire. I apprenticed with a local kennel owner and trainer at the age of 19. Then I got sidetracked by the 'realities' of life as I went to college and then into business, eventually becoming Vice-President of KingAlarm Distributors, an electronic security products wholesale firm. During my tenure KingAlarm grew from a small two store outlet into the nation's largest independently owned security distributor with locations in
8 states. When KingAlarm was purchased by a subsidiary of Honeywell in 1999 it gave me the financial freedom to pursue my dream. Before starting The Trained Canine I wanted to make sure that I had the competence required of a professional. I enrolled in and completed a training course certified by Mathew "Uncle Matty" Margolies, of It's a Dog's Life on PBS, and then attended the Academy of Canine Education in N.Y., N.Y. I also spent months working under the direction of two local trainers prior to starting out on my own.
Obedience Training Private in-home training allows us to focus on your individual needs. Throughout the training process you will observe while I get your dog to understand and comply with my commands. Before each lesson ends you will be the one who is demonstrating to me how it's done! While every dog should learn to respond to basic commands, it's the dog who has learned to exercise self-control and restraint in the presence of distractions and excitement that is always welcome around people and company. That's why good manners are always a top priority with The Trained Canine. The best time to start training your dog is when you first bring him or her home. No dog over eight weeks of age is too young to begin learning how to live successfully in a human family. The sooner your little bundle of fur learns what is expected, the easier the adjustment will be for everyone in your home.
The old maxim that "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" is especially true in dog training. It's so much easier to keep a bad habit from forming than it is to change an unacceptable behavior once it's been established. So give your puppy a head start to a happy life and train him while he's young and new to your household. Puppy Training consists of four weekly lessons. Each lesson is roughly one hour, though the first lesson often runs longer in order to explain the program and answer all of your questions. We will cover these subjects: Establishing the proper rapport and relationship with you as the benevolent leader Housetraining Walking nicely on leash (No pulling or lagging) Introduction to the Standard Commands ( Come, Sit, Down, Stay & Drop It) Proper care instructions (feeding, grooming, hygiene & medical care)
