What better way to enjoy the changing of the seasons than going for a ride along the historic Slocan Valley Rail Trail? On Sunday, October 16th beginning at noon, the Slocan Valley Heritage Trail Society (SVHTS) would like to invite cyclists of all ages to join them on an enjoyable ride along a portion of the 52 km former CP Rail Trail. Fall brings out that late flash of colour which can turn an enjoyable ride into an explosion of hues and textures. The ride this year will begin and end at the new southern-most terminus of the Rail Trail on High-

way 3A in South Slocan opposite the Dam Inn. From there, cyclists ride north for about eight km to below the area known as Kosiancic’s Hill, where they’ll find volunteers of the SVHTS waiting with refreshments. Catch up on the latest Rail Trail news, meet old friends and discover new ones – it’s sure to be a magical day. They will also bring the electric-assist bikes along for those who may wish to experience them. Dress for the weather and bring a water bottle. Donations for the SVHTS will always be gratefully accepted. For more information phone 355-2397 or 226-0008.

For the record

In the Sept. 22 issue of the West Kootenay Advertiser there were inaccuracies in the story Auxiliary action in Rossland. The auxiliaries only contribute to the fundraising efforts, but do not organize them nor are they responsible for them. The auxiliary also wasn’t the host of the conference, but they would have been having theirAGM anyway. The West Kootenay Advertiser apologizes for any confusion this may have caused.

Bear season to test bylaw NELSON STAFF West Kootenay Advertiser

With bears preparing for hibernation, Nelson’s new wildlife attractant bylaw is about to be put to the test. The law, which was enacted in June, seeks to reduce the likelihood of bears entering the city. “This is our busiest time of year for bears,” said Bear Aware community co-ordinator Joanne Siderius. The coordinator who championed the new bylaw is con-

“Bears don’t recognize political boundaries,” said Siderius. If bears enter surrounding areas there is always the possibility they may wander into the city. For that reason Bear Aware is encouraging rural residents to use electronic fences to discourage bears. “They don’t like getting the shock on their nose,” Siderius said. “A properly constructed predator electronic fence gives out enough of a shock that they don’t want to go near.”

fident that if residents abide by it there will be a likely decrease in bear sightings in residential areas. “There will always be bears, we live in bear country. There will be bears in Nelson, there will be bears in surrounding communities,” she said. “But what we would like to do is keep bears from feeding close to home.” One possible stumbling block to the new wildlife bylaw is the lack of similar bylaws in surrounding areas.

He entered five events and placed first in the stair race and third in indoor rowing. “It doesn’t matter how old you are, “said Phipps, “because they just divide everyone into the appropriate age categories; so I wouldn’t compete against 18-year-olds. Instead, I would compete against other 40 to 44 year-olds - that would be my age group.” Even as the games progressed, New York braced for heavy rain and strong winds as the remnants of Hurricane Irene swept through the metropolis. “Hurricane Irene cancelled a lot of people’s events,” described the local entrant. “One of my events was cancelled and then it ended up being rescheduled but it conflicted with the indoor rowing, so I had to give up one of my cycling races. I went there for three cycling races, the indoor rowing and the stair case. So just the one was effected for me and then indoor rowing was just pushed a couple of days further into the week because of it.” Parts of the city were closed including transit and many stores. Phipps stated it resembled a rainstorm in Vancouver by the time it hit New York City. “There was no disruption to power or

The only difference was that the stores were closed.” Categorized by weight class as well as age, Phipps started training three months prior to the games. “Rowing gets divided into two categories,” he explained. “You’re either heavyweight or you’re lightweight, and 165 pounds was the cut off. He would like to thank the Grand Forks Cycling Club, his co-workers who have allowed him time to train, and his son. “My son is a supporter of everything I do; I think he was more excited that I got a medal than I was.”

For the stair race, Phipps was given advice to just go and complete the race first. “There aren’t many multi-storey buildings here in

Warfield grills FortisBC on metering

Warfield council would like FortisBC to absorb the cost of its $40 million advanced metering project, rather than put the burden on its customers. Blair Weston made the company’s case on moving to “smart metering” at the village’s last council meeting but had a hard crowd to win over. “Forty-million for your theft and recovery for the company on my back is something that I think maybe Fortis should not be going to the utilities to get a rate increase,” said village councillor Bert Crockett. “I think Fortis should pay for it because it’s a business case for them, not the consumer.” FortisBC is taking the time to consult with local government to collect feedback on its proposed digital readers, which will have the ability to report a reading in near real-time, rather than showing up on a bill every two months. If the British Columbia Utilities Commission approves its application to increase rates, nearly all of the existing 112,000 meters in the Southern Interior will be replaced with the advanced units by 2014. The project is said to eventually pay for itself through savings by eliminating 17 meter reader positions and cracking down on energy theft in relation to marijuana grow operations. “It’s like you’re passing the buck off on me and I’m paying for that 2.5 million worth of loss theft that the company’s worried about – is it worth it?” asked Crockett. “I really have my doubts as a consumer for a $40-million investment.” For more: www.trailtimes.ca

Renovation plans cause concern

Rossland businesses are concerned with the city’s downtown renovation plans. The renovations will renew the aging infrastructure of Columbia Avenue and Washington Street. The biggest concern to business people is that there is little information to what extent the construction will affect the businesses, since the city is still waiting for a report from the contractor, ISL. The Rossland Chamber of Commerce has been holding informal meetings with concerned business people to try and clear up the confusion. Renee Clark, executive director at the chamber, said the lack of information has businesses worried about things like construction time. “They want it to be as condensed as possible and limit the amount of time needed for the construction so they can have accessibility,” Clark said. “You know, a normal looking business, not some dusty street, with trucks and construction

crews. They want this project to go as quickly as possible.” There are concerns about parking around businesses during construction, as well as the layout after construction. “That’s a big concern, especially for the essential services, like the doctor offices, Ferraro Foods, the pharmacy, the post office; that need to have access maintained or try to avoid having people park way down the block,” he said. “A lot of them deal with the elderly who are not as mobile.” For more: www.rosslandnews.com

Boundary men nabbed in pot bust Two men from Grand Forks were among eight arrested in a suspected cross-border drug smuggling operation involving 119 pounds (about 54-kilos) of marijuana. On Wednesday, Sept. 21 the RCMP’s Integrated Border Enforcement Team (IBET) stopped a white 2004 Ford F-150 pickup truck on Camp McKinney Road in Oliver and subsequently arrested three males and seized the marijuana.

Regional Roundup

A compilation of the past week’s news from around the West Kootenay

Hit and run Continued from P. 7

The Honda struck the pickup’s driver side rear tire and quarter panel causing the pickup to spin 180 degrees before coming to a stop. According to a witness, the driver of the Honda made no effort to stop and tried to flee the scene in his vehicle, but was unable to because of the amount of damage the vehicle sustained in the crash. One of the two male occupants of the Honda exited the vehicle and walked down the street away from the crash site, the other occupant removed the license plate from the rear of the vehicle and also fled the scene in the same direction. After a search of the area police were unable to locate the two suspects.

Fire and ambulance teams responded to the scene and tended to the passengers of the pick-up. The driver and her two children aged nine and 13 were not hurt. One of the males from the Honda later turned himself in at he police station. The man admitted being the driver of the vehicle and was subsequently arrested for leaving the scene of an accident and one count of dangerous driving. He is scheduled to appear before court in December. For more: www.nelsonstar.com

Arrow Yacht Club news The Arrow Yacht Club is winding down after another wonderful summer on the water, camping, and at the clubhouse.

RETURN ON INVESTMENT

The second annual fish fry was delicious with many members coming to the clubhouse on a warm summer evening to enjoy a scrumptious dinner and socializing. Summer is cruise season and the boats headed up to various spots on the lake. It was a little challenging this year as the water level was very high. So new places to beach the boats had to be found. Renata became a popular destination with its sandy beach and flat area for relaxing. The boats head up the lake at a relaxing pace and find a spot to park, get off and enjoy. There is at least one planned activity to participate in if desired. At the end of the day some boats head back to the docks and others stay overnight. The weather was super this year for all of the cruises.

A new social function was planned this year, “Dock Dinner and Decadent Desserts Night this was another beautiful evening with a great deal of very tasty food. The annual Commodore’s Dinner in mid-September wound up the yacht club’s year. This was a catered meal and various awards were presented by the commodore. The AGM will be held October 15, 11 a.m. at the clubhouse. The yacht club welcomes new members, for more information ph. 250-365-2395.

More than news A Trail Times’ carrier delivered more than headlines when he recently stumbled across an ailing customer in his West Trail home. Cam Cunningham was completing his regular four-route delivery last Wednesday

with his mom Geraldine at his side when something didn’t seem right at one of the stops. “I just noticed that the papers were stacking up so I decided to knock because it seemed suspicious, said Cunningham. He peered through a window and could see his customer, Joe Sinal sitting still in a recliner chair. “I said, ‘If you need help, just lift your finger’ and he did and that’s when I called 911 right away. Knowing that the senior’s brother John lived nearby, the two carriers ran over to spread the word. “What do you say? They didn’t have to do what they did and it was remarkable that the carriers did come and tell us, said John’s wife Louann Sinal. Though the 90-yearold didn’t survive his

stroke and passed away the following day at Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital, his family is grateful they could spend some final

hours by his side. “It’s a good thing that we do have paper carriers for this type of situation, said Louann.

Cones and Corners for kids JIM SINCLAIR Advertiser Editor

In the rarefied atmosphere near the Bombi Summit between Castlegar and Salmo, the sound of high-revving two and four-cycle engines was music to the ears of the crowd on hand at the Black Bear motocross grounds last Sunday. “Cones and Corners Race Day for Kids was being staged by the West Kootenay Recreational Dirtbike and ATV Society. When it comes to responsible outfits that want to do things right, the WKRDAS definitely seems to be on the right track, pardon the pun. Because just about anyone can get a bike and head off wherever they want, with whatever training (of lack of it) they may possess, there are all kinds of misadventures that can occur. Breakdowns and crashes will happen, and an unprepared thrill-seeker can find trouble around almost every corner. Jason Larson, President of the WKRDAS was on hand grilling burgers and dogs at last Sunday’s event, and outlined a number of the reasons why the society is such a worthwhile entity. For the junior race day there were at least as many adults on the scene as there were kids. Everything was closely supervised, according to the head man, the way it always is. “You have all of the families up here, everybody’s helping each other out if there’s a bike problem or something. Larson also mentioned the important subject of liability insurance, for which the society pays dearly. The facility is a closed one, for the use of society members, or with its permission only. Clearly marked five foot fencing bounds the property which occupies an astounding 1,100 acres. Larson himself has been involved in the sport for a relatively short time, getting his first dirt bike in 2006. It’s easy to understand the appeal of the pastime, watching kids as young as five or six scream down the track with a dusty rooster tail out back. The exclusivity of the venue adds a lot of security, especially with all the activity so closely orchestrated by the adults in charge. It’s also through the participation of society members that the course is enjoyable to run as it is. Generous ef-

Avalon Rare Metals Inc. (TSX: AVL)(NYSE AMEX: AVL) is a mineral exploration and development company focused on the rare metal deposits in Canada. Its agship project, the 100%-owned Nechalacho Deposit, Thor Lake, Northwest Territories, is emerging as one of the largest undeveloped rare earth elements resources in the world. Its exceptional enrichment in the more valuable ‘heavy’ rare earth elements, key to enabling advances in green energy technology and other growing hightech applications, is one of the few potential sources of these critical elements outside of China, currently the source of over 95% of the world supply. Avalon is well funded, has no debt and its work programs are progressing steadily. Social responsibility and environmental stewardship are corporate cornerstones. Avalon presently owns ďŹ ve rare metals and minerals projects in Canada, four of which are at advanced stages of development. These are: Nechalacho, Thor Lake, Northwest Territories, a rare earth elements (“REEâ€?) project in the pre-feasibility stage, Separation Rapids (lithium) in Ontario, Warren Township in Ontario (calcium feldspar project, currently inactive pending resolution of permitting issue), and East Kemptville, Nova Scotia, a tin-indium-gallium-germanium project where large inferred resources have been identiďŹ ed requiring further drilling to bring the project to the pre-feasibility stage. Avalon is one of the world’s leading rare metal project development companies, with a primary focus on the rare earth elements. Avalon continuously strives for best-in sector performance in environmental and social responsibility while delivering above market returns to its shareholders through its diversiďŹ ed portfolio of assets. Avalon’s strategy is to become a valued partner in an integrated materials supply chain to emerging “Greenâ€? technologies and other new high technology applications. Avalon’s growth will be driven by taking projects from exploration & development through to production, expanding production by developing new markets for its rare metals products and through acquisition of compatible businesses. Horoscope for the Week September 29, 2011 Michael O’Connor

TIP OF THE WEEK: The terms ‘prophesy’ and ‘prediction’ are similar, yet are qualitatively different. Prophesy is usually aligned with religious and/or emotional convictions linked to ‘things to come’, like a savior or Armageddon. Also, the message is delivered by a prophet. Prediction can point to anything like the weather, or seismic activity, or the stock market, or the outcome of a game, or the peaks and falls of cycles and so on. Astrology is very much focused upon prediction. Yet contrary to popular understanding, there is more to Astrology than prediction, even though it is probably the most popular and challenging feature of it, where the art and science speak to the delicacy of rendering facts and probabilities to hopeful and sometimes anxious clients. For example, Astrology is very good at assessing one’s nature and character wherein strengths and weaknesses can be quickly assessed, whether the focus is upon one’s self, family members, friends, prospective mates, and business partners and so on. Implied in this is where and how we need to grow and evolve as a conscious soul, as well as attaining socially sanctioned notions of maturity. Astrology also looks at compatibility between people, ideal career orientations, the relationship one holds with a given location on the planet (Astro Cartography), ideal times when to sign contracts, health and constitution assessments, making important life choices and, coming full circle, timing.

ARIES (MAR 21 – APR 20)

LIBRA (SEP 22 – OCT 22)

TAURUS (APR 20 – MAY 21)

SCORPIO (OCT 22 – NOV 21)

GEMINI (MAY 21 – JUN 21)

SAGITTARIUS (NOV 21 – DEC 21)

A focus upon creating harmony in your relationships is extra important now. Seeing the beauty that you share will seem easier than usual. You may also feel more playful and sporting than you have for the past several weeks. Over or under doing it may be an issue though. Striking the balance now implies moderation between socializing and exercising. Cultivating a healthier ow continues. Patience with the process is probably necessary but not so easy. This is an expansive time for you and unless you are pregnant, a growing waistline may be contrary to your goals. A change of diet may be in order. Yet, it is your overall lifestyle that may require attention. Get to the bottom of things. A creative, playful and perhaps even romantic cycle is now yours to enjoy. Yet, your focus may also be upon creating more abundance. To this end, you may have to dig deeper than usual to access inner reserves of trust. Fortunately, your energy levels may be riding higher than they have for a while. Let beauty inspire your faith in creating a satisfying ow.

CANCER (JUN 21 – JUL 22)

Home and family are important, especially now. Your ambitions are on the rise but do your energy levels match your enthusiasm? Reaching out to friends and family members for support will bring positive results. Somehow, you feel the call to go home and to go big! Set your intentions to create harmony and beauty within, and at home.

LEO (JUL 22 – AUG 23)

A pioneering urge continues. You are ready to enter new territory and/or to break through any lingering blocks and barriers. With some positive returns slated to come your way, things should proceed smoothly but maintaining a positive attitude is ever important. Laying claim to hidden talents is part of the plot. Read between the lines. Getting in some downtime will feel right now. Slowing the pace and allowing life to impress itself upon you could bring some real inspiration. Taking in the beauty of the season will ignite inspirations. Meanwhile, changes in your lifestyle are leading to changes in your perceptions and vice versa. It may be better to receive than give during this cycle. Sharing quality time with good friends and/or people of like mind and interest is likely now. Open exchanges of thoughts and feelings could even prove healing. Yet, giving more to situations than you might normally may be necessary to sustain harmony. Balancing your perspectives between the details and the bigger picture is a current lesson.

CAPRICORN (DEC 21 – JAN 19)

Entering into talks and negotiations is in the spotlight. This is a call to be assertive, yet to also exercise full diplomatic efforts. Sharing your feelings and exercising empathy and concern for those of others will win hearts. With your ambitions running high now, be careful that your actions do not jilt or wound. Aim to repair and improve relations.

A busy cycle has begun. To achieve success you may have to manage your time more than usual. Desires to increase your popularity are strong yet feeling conďŹ dent may seem more challenging. Opening yourself to new knowledge and/ or sharpening what you have may be necessary. Secure your foundation now with intentions to increase professional popularity, later.

AQUARIUS (JAN 19 – FEB 19)

VIRGO (AUG 23 – SEP 22)

PISCES (FEB 19 – MAR 20)

Deciphering what are your priorities is a current focus. Fortifying your self-esteem may feel necessary. This will require that you summon the courage to face any lingering fears or insecurities. In turn, this may require that you determine what they are and get some kid of training or instructions about how to proceed.

You are in a philosophical mood. Seeing the bigger picture feels important. Equally vital is that you get clear on what you feel you truly want and need. Some offers may sound good, but if it is not time, then it will be contrary to your true needs. Only you truly know how you feel. ‘To your own self, be true.’ A deep mood is lingering. This is a good time for research. Drawing upon the resources of others may feel extra needed. However, it may prove more important that you give than receive now. This is a call to roll up your sleeves and get to work. Improvements and even repairs may be needed. This is a time to invest more than to collect.

Daniel Kloc – ‘Raven’ (bronze)

Sculpture Talk

Welcome to our new regular feature introducing the artists behind the sculptures in this year’s Castlegar SculptureWalk.

One of the beauties of Sculpturewalk is the diversity the program has: not only the medium and size of the pieces displayed, but also of the sculptors whose works are chosen for installation. From the famous to ¿rst-timers, from local to international, all are chosen for their talent, inventiveness and vision. Area sculptor Daniel Kloc may be exhibiting a major piece for the ¿rst time in a public venue, but he has loads of experience – with the art of bronze sculpting and with the program itself.

impetus to submit this year, that and some welcome encouragement from the organizers and my fellow artists. It was a real blast!”

“I love the space and quiet, but studio might be a bit much to call my work space,” he laughs. “Much of the work on ‘Raven’ was done in my kitchen. I spent about 400 hours over six months working on the piece so it was a real constant, believe me. After all, the kitchen is the main room in any dwelling because you’ve got to eat. To say I’m familiar with it is an understatement.”

Kloc has a number of years of experience behind him. A graduate of Kootenay School of the Arts (KSA) in 1998, he has exhibited smaller pieces in galleries and shows throughout the Okanagan and the Kootenays. He spent four years working at Pyramid Bronzeworks Even though he works in Kelowna - originally full-time right now, Kloc knows he’ll always be creating art regardless of the form or shape it takes. it was tough “I’m inspired by “Sometimes to ¿nish a good day’s medieval gothic work and then have to put a bunch of hours on my sculptures, and in piece,” he says frankly. Prague and nearly But I got it done, and I’m in a bunch of every city and town working different mediums too. I’ there has amazing m painting, airbrushing, working with polymer examples.” resins, that sort of thing, as well as the bronze work. It keeps me really busy.” Daniel Kloc

Kloc was involved in Sculpturewalk last year both artistically and organizationally. He helped ¿nish some pieces and assisted with the many logistical issues putting the show on entails. As a result, he was encouraged to work on a major piece for this year’s program and submit it. His bronze piece, ‘Raven’ was one of 25 chosen from the nearly 50 submissions and Kloc is excited to again be a part of the program. founded by local artist and Sculpturewalk participant “I worked on the piece Denis Kleine – increasing that was eventually chosen his understanding and for the ‘People’s Choice’ knowledge of bronze award, along with a few sculpting. Eventually others,” he says. “The local though, the Kootenays sculpting community is called him back and he not huge, but we all know now works out of his and help each other. Being cabin/studio on acreage in involved last year was my Tarrys.

The combination of fulltime work and part-time art might soon be a thing of the past. Ultimately, Kloc envisions even greater devotion to his artistic endeavours and branching out further. “I’d like to get involved in some way with the ¿lm industry, either as a mouldmaker, a set/sculpture

designer or brokering sculptures to be used in the ¿lm if it isn’t one of mine. The possibilities are endless, but right now that dream is still in the future.” His dream job could easily happen, based on his talent and creativity. ‘Raven’ is a 5 foot high bronze that captures the mystery and wiliness of this celebrated – notably Edgar Allen Poe’s macabre poem, among many others - bird. Kloc has cast its brooding, slightly ominous features, all shaggy feathers and piercing look, on a stylized branch in which the image of a deer’s skull is visible when you look closely. The subject and the way he’s worked it is satisfying to the artist. “My heritage is Czech, and I’ve got some cousins living in the republic,” he explains. “I’m inspired by medieval gothic sculptures, and Prague and nearly every city and town there has amazing examples. I was blown away by all the beautiful pieces and got a lot of inspiration from what I saw, everywhere it seemed. So when I started this project I knew pretty much what I was after, stylistically. I worked the deer skull into it because I like to try to incorporate anatomy and

nature in my pieces, even if some of them are kind of gothic at ¿rst glance.” The compelling ‘Raven’ might be Kloc’s ¿rst major piece publicly exhibited but with his ideas and style there will no doubt be others down the road.
