GREG NESTEROFF Advertiser Reporter

While this column normally deals with local antiques and artifacts that have recently sold on eBay, today the story focuses on an item about to go on the block. Nelson’s St. Saviour’s Anglican Church hall was recently sold and in cleaning out the building, a leathercovered bottle was discovered. Historian and church member Greg Scott says it was “just one of those things, a curiosity that seemed was always around.” Neither the local museum nor Kootenay Diocese archives in Kelowna wants it, so it’s going to be sold online, with the money to be put toward restoration of the church. The bottle is 23.5 centimetres tall and is covered in brown leather that’s cracked on the bottom. The glass is green. A handwritten tag reads: “Brought from

Old Calabar by the Rev. Geo Faulds ca. 1890. Given me by Geo. F. Stirling, Victoria, B.C. The centre of bottle was originally covered with antelope skin. JRT.” Old Calabar was a legendary port in Nigeria. The Scottish Missionary Society was active there and in Victoria after 1861. While no one has been able to find any record of Rev. George Faulds, a Rev. H. Faulds was one of the fathers of fingerprinting.

George Faulds Stirling (1877-1966) ran unsuccessfully for the Canadian Labour Party in the KasloSlocan riding in the B.C. provincial election of 1924 but later won a by-election in Salmon Arm. He died in Victoria. It’s unclear how he was related to Rev. George Faulds, nor is it clear who JRT was. The bottle goes up for grabs today on eBay with a starting bid of $50. Search “leather-covered” and “Faulds” to find it.

The Golden City’s population jumped up by 8.5 per cent – to 3,556 in 2011 from 3,278 n 2006 – while Trail followed suit with an approximate six per cent increase to 7,681 people living in the city last year, compared to 7,237 in 2006. Rossland Mayor Greg Granstrom said it’s a combination of factors that is driving population up, including new employment opportunity.

“But I do know that there may be something in the water because I see a lot of young ladies with children, there’s no doubt about it,” he laughed. Birthrates at Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital have shown a steady incline over the past five years, with 281 babies born at the Trail hospital in 2011 from 242 in 2010, according to Interior Health spokesperson Karl Hardt, But Granstrom wouldn’t hold the results to young families alone. “I think Rossland itself has a reputation as a very nice place to live with an excellent lifestyle and I think

people gravitate to Rossland for those reasons,” he said. Other municipalities in Greater Trail showed little change from their standings fours year prior. Fruitvale shot up 3.3 per cent to 2,016 residents from 1,952; Montrose sailed to a 1.8 per cent hike up to 1,030 from 1,012 while Warfield sank by 1.7 per cent to 1,700 from 1,729. Overall the Kootenay Boundary district population rose 1.3 per cent to 31,138 residents. More census data will be released throughout the year based on data gathered including age, sex, families and marital status.

Special of the Week! 2005 Hyundai Tuscon

V6, 4 wheel drive, automatic, all power options, CD player, keyless entry, winter tires, $ 153,000 kms

Well it’s that time of year again when people are scrambling to get their income tax documents together and scratching their heads, wondering if they should make an RRSP contribution.

There are only a few weeks left Wednesday, February 29 – to get your last minute RRSP contibution in for the 2011 tax year There are only a few weeks left – Wednesday, February 29, to be exact – to get your last minute RRSP contribution in for the 2011 tax year. I’ve had several clients ask me whether it’s better to contribute to an RRSP or that relatively new savings plan called the TFSA (Tax-Free Savings Account). Unfortunately, there isn’t a clearcut answer as there are so many factors to consider and each person’s case is so different. The purpose of the RRSP is two-fold. Most people are dili-

in the 30 per cent tax bracket. Did you earn more? Let’s say your earnings were between $85,000 and $103,000 – now, you’re in a 38 per cent tax bracket. Anything above $132,000 will get you into the top bracket which is over 43 per cent!

It’s even sweeter if you land yourself in the lower tax bracket during retirement.

So, if you decide to make an RRSP contribution, this tax aspect is something you’ll need to keep in mind. If you make a contribution of $1,000 and your earnings are $60,000 – you would achieve a tax deduction of 30 per cent or $300, in this case. Obviously, the higher your earnings are – the bigger the tax deduction. It’s even sweeter if you land yourself in the lower tax bracket during retirement. Sure, you might be making the big bucks now, but if you keep your total retirement

Life goes by in a heartbeat and you’d be amazed at how quickly you’ll be facing retirement.

Life goes by in a heartbeat and you’d be amazed as to how quickly you’ll be facing retirement. The main goal is to just save money. Again, everyone’s circumstances are so different and you need to talk to a financial planner to find out what would work best for you.

Debbie Pereversoff CFP CPCA is a financial planner with Assante Financial Management Ltd. and her company, The Affolter Financial Group Inc., in Castlegar. Please contact a professional advisor to discuss your particular circumstances prior to acting on the information above.

income under $40,000 or so – you’ll be bringing out that RRSP income in a much lower tax bracket. Now if we turn the tables to the new TFSA, the benefit is that you could contribute up to $5,000 per year (cumulative since 2009) – and, although there are no tax deductibility provisions like the RRSP – the income you eventually draw out, will not be taxed. In some cases, it makes more sense for people to disregard the tax deductibility aspect of the RRSP and just save within the TFSA. This is especially so if you know you’re likely to have earnings under $40,000, which puts you in the lowest tax bracket. There isn’t as much “tax-bang for your buck” when your earnings are this low. If you suspect your earnings will increase down the road – and, you find yourself in the next tax bracket – this might be the opportunity to simply transfer money out of your TFSA into an RRSP just for some tax relief. Otherwise, it may be more ben-

gently trying to save for retirement and of course, the benefit of saving within an RRSP is the fact that there is tax-deferred growth within the plan. The compounding effect over the years can grow your portfolio significantly, and it’s even better when it’s sheltered from tax during your accumulation years. The other benefit of the RRSP is the tax deductibility. Put it this way: The higher your earnings - the higher your tax bracket. The higher your tax bracket – the better off you could be in contributing to an RRSP. If you look at it from the “tax angle” aspect – it works like this: do a tally of all of your income for the year. Once you’ve figured that out, it gives you a pretty good idea of what your marginal tax rate is (the highest percentage in which you’ll be taxed). As an example: if your earnings are roughly $43,000 or lower – you’ll be in one of the lowest tax brackets which is approximately 23 per cent. If your earnings fall somewhere between $43,000 and $74,000 then you’ll be

The Waneta expansion project has reached a milestone with the completion of powerhouse excavation, partners Fortis Inc., Columbia Power Corporation and Columbia Basin Trust announced today. More than 50,000 truckloads have hauled about 230,000 cubic metres of overburden and 141,000 metres of rock from

the construction zone to the main site seven kilometres away. This rock will be reused in future highway and other infrastructure projects in the area. “We’re really pleased with the progress of the project, we just recently finished the blasting of the tunnels, we also have completed the blasting of the powerhouse and at the end of the month we should be finished blasting the intake,

said Wally Penner, regional project manager for contractor SNC Lavalin. “What’s going to be happening from now on is a lot of rebar and concrete work and we’re hopeful in about a month we’ll start to move the draft tubes that have been assembled at the main site. The $900-million project will see the completion of a second powerhouse to share the hydraulic head created by

the existing Waneta Dam, owned by Teck and BC Hydro. An intake structure will flow from the Waneta headpoint through two parallel tunnels that will supply two Francis turbines in the new powerhouse. The 335-megawatt hydroelectric project will generate enough power to supply 60,000 homes annually – a unique opportunity to obtain large amounts of clean hydroelectric energy without building a new dam. “We’re actually constructing a facil-

Medal podium is Flooded with brother and sister SUBMITTED

The first ever Whitewater Junior Free Ski Open was held in late January and showcased some awesome talent. The Freeski event focuses on fluidity while taking drops and cliffs all in stride. Each skier is marked on their line

choice, fluidity, control, technique and style. A Rossland brother and sister took it all in stride and managed to make the podium. Erin Flood finished first in the 8-11 year old girl category, while her brother, Jacob scooped second in the 12-15 year old boy category. They showed great

form and stomped the hillside nicely. Their 13-year old sister, Mackenzie Flood just missed the podium this time, coming in fourth. She recently won the Canadian Open Freeskiing Championship held at Red Mountain. Jacob is in his firstyear of the Red Mountain Freeski Academy.

Put yourself in the driver’s seat for a minute. You’re suddenly in one of the world’s fiercest battles for automotive supremacy in any segment. The stakes are simple — and brutal. You either lead or you’re led. You either see the open road before you, or you see the other guy’s back bumper. Either way, we hope you enjoy the view. North American Car of the Year 2012

for the e

Week

TIP OF THE WEEK: What if the Mayan prophesies are true? Th They speak of the activation of heightened levels of consciousness yet h eighte also of climate change and cataclysms. Are massive organized netw networks of hidden power cabals conspiring to create a massive hoax with 2012, as some assert? Or is there actually some truth to all this 2012 ‘mumbo jumbo’ as some dismissively call it? We are about to ďŹ nd out! Either way, our world has reached something of a crisis point. Greed, corruption and crimes against nature and humanity have become so much the norm rea ac many hardly even see them anymore or have simply tuned them out in futility, disgust and/or despair. If cataclysm does not occur, that man the hopes of m most, we still face many other social, economic and environmental challenges. Assisting us to tune-in to our deeper destiny, living authentically and the thereby contributing to the solutions we seek is one of the ways Astrology can and does help.

ARIES (MAR 21 – APR 20)

LIBRA (SEP 22 – OCT 22)

After what has quite possibly been a busy few months, you may feel the need and desire for a slower pace. This will become increasingly evident this week. With the accelerated pace of spring not far off it might be wise to recharge your batteries. Save any industrious projects for later. If you can travel to a quiet place, do it now and leave the gadgets behind.

Clearing within in order to manifest and achieve without is in focus. This is what Feng Shui and Vastu is all about organizing and arranging your environment in alignment with natural principles. Clearing the clutter is the most basic feature and could imply literal stuff and/or limiting beliefs and self-concepts. Do the work and you could get a lot more than just a clean and beautiful home.

TAURUS (APR 20 – MAY 21) Sharing your dreams and ideals with others is in the spotlight. This could manifest as simply the desire for quality time with friends. Yet inspirational visions and plans for future prospects are on your mind. At deeper levels, this is a time of clearing the way and could well include tending to unďŹ nished business to prepare for important and exciting projects to come.

GEMINI (MAY 21 – JUN 21)

SCORPIO (OCT 22 – NOV 21) A creative and imaginative cycle is on the rise. Yet you should be prepared to give more than usual to achieve your goals. In fact, it may be necessary to break through any lines of resistance. Consider that whatever we perceive and experience without is ever a reection of who we are and/or what is going on within. Work to receive a stream of creative ideas owing your way now.

Bringing your dreams into sharper focus is featured in your current reality. Exchanging ideas with someone you can trust and who supports you will probably help a lot now. You may feel somewhat confused about your place and purpose. Accessing guidance from both within and without is ideal. Even though the outer pace is fast these days aim to be patient, yet deliberate and sure.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV 21 – DEC 21)

CANCER (JUN 21 – JUL 22)

CAPRICORN (DEC 21 – JAN 19)

Your world is changing steadily and so too are your feelings, intuitions, philosophies and/or beliefs about it all. Attempting to return to the way it was is not a good idea and will not work anyway. It is time to advance. What this more precisely means and implies depends on your situation. This could be a good idea to seek guidance and counsel yet advance you must!

A wave of inspiring ideas is scheduled to wash in on your shores this week. You will want to collect all the treasures that come with it for practical use. Meanwhile desires for increased levels of freedom are featured. This may be the source of some disruption at home and/or at work. Circumstances probably require that you focus and stay the course even if you want to run.

LEO (JUL 22 – AUG 23)

AQUARIUS (JAN 19 – FEB 19)

Some rather deep shifts and changes are rumbling in you. These may not be so apparent to others but you can sure feel them. You sense that you have to eliminate certain things in order to improve. Cleaning closets, clearing debts, replacing limiting beliefs, attitudes and behaviour patterns with better ones, leaving unfulďŹ lling relationships that do more harm than good and so on are examples.

A review of what is truly important and practically necessary is underway in your mind. This process of prioritization may also be coloured by notions of what would be most ideal. Dreams of increasing your power somehow are playing a role too. Getting more knowledge and/or training is a likely answer. Now is a good time to review the prospects.

VIRGO (AUG 23 – SEP 22)

PISCES (FEB 19 – MAR 20)

The spotlight is shifting to your relationships now. Sharing thoughts, feelings, affections and quality time feels right. Giving more will likely play into the mix, yet you may also feel it is your turn to receive. This could be the source of confusion and conict so aim to communicate clearly. Acknowledging your worth and value is part of the plot.

A busy cycle continues. You will feel even more deliberate and determined starting this week. Expect to take some key initiatives. Desires to activate a more satisfying ow and increase returns are motivating you. Your willingness to engage with others in cooperative exchanges is extra ideal now and this trend will continue.

Dreaming a new dream close to home is a current theme. Any opportunity to escape into the cozy warmth of your own home stands to be extra inviting now. Yet a frisky mood is also on the rise and you yearn for some fun, excitement and adventure. A family adventure away could hit the mark. How can you escape, feel safe and close, play and take your own space all at the same time?

Commmunity Would-be culinary consortium considers cooking curriculum CASSANDRA CHIN AdvertiserReporter

Selkirk College, Community Futures

and Grand Forks Secondary School (GFSS) are considering the possibility of co-ordinating a cook-

ing course in September 2012. “This has been a conversation that we’ve been having

with Selkirk College since September (2011), said Jeanette Hanlon, secretary treasurer of School

District 51 (SD51). “One of the programs that we’re bringing to GFSS is the cooking program. SD51 Superintendent Michael Strukoff stated, “We are still in the exploratory stages. At this time, this (course) is the only one under consideration. Strukoff noted the course would be

available to both high school students and adults. “There’s a fair bit of excitement from (Selkirk), Strukoff said. “We’re also looking at how much of a demand there is for (the course). If there’s enough demand, how are we going to deliver it? GFSS’ kitchen is waiting to be inspect-

ed before the course would be approved. “We are examining if our kitchen will meet the standard and (we) are looking at methods to determine demand, he concluded. “We’re waiting for people from Selkirk to come and see if the kitchens are up to standard, and if they aren’t, what needs to be done.

THE TROUBLES IN EUROPE AREN’T ABOUT TO GET BETTER SOON. Automobile luxury and performance have long been dominated by German manufacturers.

UNTIL NOW The Buick LaCrosse embodies North American design and technology at its best, taking precision engineering and refinement farther than we ever have before. Inside, the cabin features premium materials and advanced amenities, giving the LaCrosse a sumptuous and distinguished feel.

LaCrosse is also an efficient performer with your choice of a 303 hp V6 or, for 2012, a smooth 2.4-litre four-cylinder ECOTEC® engine. Factor in a 2012 5-star overall safety rating and a 2011 Consumers Digest Best Buy award and the result is a luxury sedan that’s making waves across the pond.

To test drive the LaCrosse, see the New General Motors at your new local GM store.
