sold in July for $50. The seller was in Greenfield Park, Quebec. • An early 1900s dry mount photo showing a sculling boat on Kootenay Lake sold for $56 in November. It was taken by B. McGregor Studio of Nelson and signed by Louis Johnstone, presumably the paddler depicted. The seller was in Durango, Colorado. The buyers of the last six items were all from Nelson. • In May, a set of tattered labels from the Phoenix Brewing Co. went for $51. Only one label was complete, while the rest were partials and one was a composite. The seller was in Kelowna. • Several trade tokens drew hefty bids, including a fairly rare one from the Bodega saloon in Nelson that drew 16 bids in April and sold for $119 US. The seller was in East Berlin, Pennsylvania. The same seller sold

a pair of tokens from the Cabinet cigar store and Royal shoe store in Nelson for $81 US. A not-so-rare token from the Pioneer Hotel in Greenwood sold in March for $78 US, another from the Rossland Billiard and Bowling Hall went for $71 US in January, and a very rare one from the Manhattan saloon in Nelson fetched $87 Cdn in April. Someone in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania sold a pair of tokens from L. Tonelli of Trail in separate auctions for $34 and $41. They’re noteworthy because they are actually misspelled “L. Tonnelli.” The corrected version is much harder to come by. • A lovely postal cover from Nelson’s West Transfer company, with a woodcut engraving of the building on the back, sold for $33 Cdn in November. West Transfer stood at 723 Baker Street, where Napa Auto Parts is now.

Community “Forks Over Knives” documentary film coming to Castlegar JIM SINCLAIR Advertiser Editor

There’s probably no time in anyone’s memory when it couldn’t be said that health was a primary concern. There’s a recently-released film called Forks Over Knives that deals with diet and it’s many direct effects on health, and it’s coming to Castlegar’s Community Complex on Sat-

urday, January 14. The film is being brought to town by Castlegar residents Andre and JoAnna Boruck, strong proponents of healthy living as well as the folks behind Slice of Life Ministries. In this film they’ve found information they feel can be of value. The film makes a logical assertion in regard to the connection between diet and health.

Here is a brief synopsis as supplied by the film’s producers: “Forks over Knives examines the profound claim that most, if not all, of the degenerative diseases that afflict us can be controlled, or even reversed, by rejecting animal-based and processed foods. “The major storyline traces the personal journeys of Dr. T. Colin Campbell,

a nutritional biochemist from Cornell University, and Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, a former top surgeon at the world-renowned Cleveland Clinic. Inspired by remarkable discoveries in their young careers, these men conducted several groundbreaking studies. Their separate research led them to the same startling conclusion: degenerative diseases like heart

disease, type 2 diabetes, and even several forms of cancer, could almost always be prevented—and in many cases reversed—by adopting a whole foods, plant-based diet. “Despite the profound implications of their findings, their work has remained relatively unknown to the public. Bringing these scientific concepts to

life, cameras follow ‘reality patients’ who have chronic conditions from heart disease to diabetes, and are taught by their doctors to adopt a whole foods plantbased diet as the primary approach to treat their ailments. “The film features leading experts on health and tackles the issue of diet and disease in a way that will have people talking

for years.” Forks Over Knives deals with a topic that makes no social distinctions, a topic pertaining to everyone. The time, date and location to note – 7 p.m. Saturday, January 14 at the Castlegar Community Complex. Admission is by donation. “A film that can save your life” – Roger Ebert, Chicago SunTimes.

Pacific Coastal Airlines marks increase in air traffic

Happy New Year !!! Wishing you all good health and much happiness in 2012.

TIMOTHY SCHAFER

From your friends at

Advertiser Reporter

The last thing Christine Urquhart expected when she stepped off a Pacific Coastal airplane into the blustery, gray winter landscape in Trail was a flower wreath symbolic of more tropical climates. But as the 20,000th passenger this year for the burgeoning regional airline, Urqhuart was bestowed two colourful leis — and a free ticket anywhere the airline flew in B.C. — as part of a ceremony celebrating the monumental moment at the Trail Regional Airport. “I had no idea they gave these out in Trail,” said a surprised Urquhart, a former Trail resident traveling from Vancouver to the Silver City to visit her family at Christmas time. Urquhart was part of a packed planeload of passengers that day, as more people are finding out about the twice-daily service from Trail to Vancouver. The air service was forecast to reach the 20,000-per-year passenger mark in 2016, not 2011, based

on projected growth from its previous years. Since its inception in Trail in 2006, the popularity of the service has resulted in the addition of a larger airplane — a 30seat Saab 340A — to its workhorse (19-seat Beechcraft 1900C) to meet the demand for flights to and from the Lower Mainland. The demand for the service in Trail has grown by almost 25 per cent in 2011 — up from 12,000 in 2006 — with a jump in total passengers going from 15,400 in 2010 to over 20,000

this year, said Michelle Hubert, Pacific Coastal’s Trail station supervisor. Hubert said the increased reliability of the service has been their hallmark, with 98 per cent of their flights landing passengers on Kootenay ground. “We’ve increased our reliability of being able to get in and out of the Kootenays, and that’s our biggest asset right now for passengers,” she said. “And I think the word is now getting out.” Geography and technology have combined to create an op-

timum situation for air traffic in Trail over the other regional airport in Castlegar, according to Hubert. The valley that contains Trail’s airport is much less prone to bad weather and lowlying clouds than the end of the Columbia River Valley. And if conditions worsen in Trail, Pacific Coastal flights have the option of landing in Castlegar and bussing passengers back to Trail — meaning the airline has two airports they can service out of instead of just one.

Contract dispute puts anesthesiology services at risk TIMOTHY SCHAFER Advertiser Reporter

The West Kootenay’s regional hospital could see its anesthesiology service withdrawn as soon as April 1, 2012 as the provincial society attempts to grab the attention of the province in an ongoing contract dispute. Last week the B.C. Anesthesiologists’ Society (BCAS) said they would start withdrawing services to

all but emergency and urgent patients after their contract expires March 31, 2012 if the province does not bargain directly with the society, rather than the B.C. Medical Association. Dr. Jeff Rains, president of the BCAS, has indicated that the society had voted 98 per cent in favour of the move, meaning more than 72,000 B.C. residents now wait-listed for surgery could have a longer wait in

More than 72,000 B.C. residents now wait-listed for surgery could have a longer wait in the New Year. the New Year. Although there are three months before the contract expires, Dr. Rains said the society wanted to give

the province enough time to agree to a process to address the issues coming forward from the society. Currently, the province has refused to negotiate directly with the society, preferring to use thirdparty group B.C. Medical Association (BCMA). However, onths-long negotiations between the BCMA and government have been classified as “rocky at times.”

WANT TO RECYCLE YOUR UNWANTED ELECTRONICS? Here’s where you can recycle them safely and free of charge in Nelson and Trail:

Nelson Leafs Bottle Depot 120 Silica Street, Nelson (250) 354-4922

WHAT IS THE ELECTRONICS STEWARDSHIP ASSOCIATION OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (ESABC) PROGRAM? ESABC is a not-for-profit extended producer responsibility program set up by the producers and retailers of electronics in British Columbia to provide a province wide recycling system for unwanted electronics.

Trail Bottle Depot 562 Rossland Avenue, Trail (250) 364-3025

ISN’T IT IMPORTANT TO REUSE BEFORE RECYCLING? While the program is designed to manage unwanted electronic products that have exhausted their reuse potential, we strongly encourage users to first reuse their products. If you choose to donate to a charity, make sure you have backed up your data and wiped your drives clean prior to donation.

WHAT ARE THE ACCEPTABLE ELECTRONIC ITEMS INCLUDED IN THE PROGRAM?

HOW ARE ELECTRONICS RECYCLED?

Effective July 1, 2010, the following items can be recycled free of charge at any Encorp Return-It Electronics™ Collection Site: display devices, desktop computers, portable computers, computer peripherals, computer scanners, printers and fax machines, non-cellular phones and answering machines, vehicle audio and video systems (aftermarket), home audio and video systems, and personal or portable audio and video systems.

Electronics collected for recycling are sent to approved primary recyclers in North America. They are broken down using various manual and mechanical processes. Products are separated into their individual components for recovery. Through a variety of refining and smelting processes, the materials reclaimed from unwanted electronics are used as raw materials in the manufacturing of new products.

Community Grand Forks outfit known as “BETHS” is seeking volunteers CASSANDRA CHIN Advertiser Reporter

The Boundary Emergency and Transitional Housing Society (BETHS) is seeking volunteers to help out during night shift. A 24-hour extreme weather response facility shelter, BETHS provides a place for men, women and families to stay during wet and cold weather.

Shelter co-ordinator Tonya Galloway noted that the cold winter season also has volunteers heading for warmer locations. “What happens is that we have many volunteers at the age where they leave for the winter, and other volunteers come down with illnesses and people move,” she explained. “It’s an ebb and flow of volunteers and then we

don’t have enough so I’m constantly looking and recruiting volunteers.” Helpers are requested from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m., and are asked to able to bring their own work, have email access, read or study. “We’re really looking for someone to be that second person because the BETHS staff will be responsible for the night in terms of the work

end of it,” said Galloway. “The sell to get them in there is that they are there to be a warm second body.” She noted that even though there hasn’t been as much snow this year as previous years, it doesn’t mean it’s any less cold. “The criteria for the emergency weather response facility is that it’s temperatures usually below freezing,” Galloway pointed out. “We’re

still operating under those criteria even though there are half the nights when it hasn’t been hovering five below. It’s hovering around zero, like now, but it’s still damp and wet. This puts people at high risk for hypothermia and all kinds of cardiovascular problems.” Former volunteers have mentioned that they have enjoyed the experience.

Poet Laureate says he’s a Kootenay boy NELSON STAFF West Kootenay Advertiser

In the wake of his appointment as Canada’s new parliamentary poet laureate, every place Fred Wah has ever lived is claiming him as its own. But while he identifies with many places, “in my own mind,” he says, “I’m essentially a Kootenay boy.” Wah, 72, grew up in Nelson. He was the founder and director of the writing program at David Thompson University Centre and also taught at Selkirk College in Castlegar. For nearly 25 years he lived in South Slocan, where his children grew up, and he and wife Pauline Butling still summer at her family’s old property at Deanshaven on the East Shore. This area, he says, holds significance not only for him, but many writers. “Nelson has always been very central and primary to the arts in general. I don’t know what it is: the water, the mountains, the skiing. It’s just a very important place.” Wah was nominated and passed over for parliamentary poet laureate about five years ago, but was asked if he would let his name stand again the next time a writer from English Canada

The BETHS effort began last February and operates out of the Grand Forks Christian Centre, where guests will be welcomed to a light evening snack, a warm bed, breakfast in the morning and a snack for the road. For those interested in volunteering or for more information on BETHS, contact Galloway at 250-5844671 or bethscoordinator@gmail.com.

A warm break in the action

was due to be selected. He agreed, but when the call came a couple of weeks before Christmas, “I was very surprised. I hadn’t thought much about it lately since it was sort of off the radar.” Wah is the fifth writer to hold the office of parliamentary poet laureate. He replaces Pierre DesRuisseaux, whose two-year term expired this year.

SUMMIT SUBARU

“Whatever myths, misconceptions and misnomers there are about what homeless people look like, that’s not what they look like,” she said. “What you’re really volunteering for is to help somebody’s uncle, brother, mother, sister. “It could be anyone of us if we lost our paycheck for the month because we couldn’t pay our mortgage or bills.”

An outdoor curling rink had Grand Forks curlers gathering on 12th Street for some recent outdoor festivities. Created by Guy Dubeault, with help from his neighbour, the rink was completed on New Year’s Eve. Taking a break from curling, ladies warmed up by the mini-bonfire. Horoscope

for the e

January 6, 2012 Michael O’Connor

Week

TIP OF THE WEEK: The following list of planetary activity will oc occur in 2012 and below is the summary th themes for each sign. Mars will remain in Virgo until July 3 due to turning retrograde on January 23rd. Jupiter begins the year at 0 Taurus then enters Gemini on June 11th. Saturn in Libra since October 2009 will enter Scorpio in October 2012. Chiron at 2 degrees Pisces now will reach 10 by mid June and end the year at about 6. Uranus at 1 degrees Aries will reach 8 by mid July and ďŹ nish the yea ar at 4. Neptune begins the year at the last degree of Aquarius, enters its own sign of Pisces on February 3rd will reach 3 degrees by mid June and year ye at 1 Pisces. Pluto begins the year at 7 Capricorn achieves 10 by about mid April and completes the year at 9. The Lunar Nodes are currently end the year (No in Sagittarius (North) and Gemini and will end their 18 month cycle to begin a new one in early September with the North Node in Scorpio and the South in Taurus. The most potent planetary planet The aspect of the year will be between Uranus in Aries Square Pluto in Capricorn and this dynamic aspect pattern will be active for 3 years!

ARIES (MAR 21 – APR 20)

LIBRA (SEP 22 – OCT 22)

TAURUS (APR 20 – MAY 21)

SCORPIO (OCT 22 – NOV 21)

GEMINI (MAY 21 – JUN 21)

SAGITTARIUS (NOV 21 – DEC 21)

Expect powerful activations of your overall mode of self-expression. You will be extra challenged to let go of outworn attitudes, perceptions and behaviour patterns. Your interpretation of security will be transformed. Exercising patience with your self, others and circumstances will be extra important, especially in the 1st half of the year. The year will begin on an expansive note. You will want to go big and hard somehow. Yet others will request and/or circumstances demand that you be more temperate. Diversifying your focus and interests will become increasingly attractive and perhaps necessary. In the last quarter especially you will learn just how important it is to be more cooperative. Balancing out-reaching activities with connecting with your inner source of faith continues as the year begins. Achieving your highest ideals will become increasingly important; committed relationships are implied. By June you will feel more adventurous; increased travel and creative interests are likely. By late summer you will be ready to design your life anew!

CANCER (JUN 21 – JUL 22)

Measurable changes on the relationship and home fronts will continue this year. Yet, your ďŹ nancial situation could change for the better, especially during the ďŹ rst half of the year. But don’t spend frivolously; you will be glad you didn’t by the end of the year. Key investments especially will gain your attention or begin to in autumn. Meanwhile be extra deliberate with your health. Changes in your lifestyle bringing changes of perception and vice versa will continue in 2012. At best, your social network stands to expand and with it new opportunities will present themselves. Continue to move forward and do not look back, lest you get caught in the past. Old ego patterns will continue to dissolve and autumn will offer a clean quick release into the future. The call of new adventures is and will continue to call you out this year. Yet, establishing a more stable and efďŹ cient base is part of the plot. Any wishes to be free from previous lifestyle rhythms and patterns will be granted later in the year especially. This pace may seem slower than you like in the ďŹ rst half but the summer season will bring a signiďŹ cant acceleration and new relationships.

Increased responsibilities are on the rise. These will include taking leads and/or more time spent caring for others. Getting your own needs met as well will therefore prove extra important. Beware of controlling tendencies, especially in the ďŹ rst six months. Your power potential will rise in autumn. Yet, you may have to work double time to feel conďŹ dent about it and worldly affairs.

CAPRICORN (DEC 21 – JAN 19)

LEO (JUL 22 – AUG 23)

AQUARIUS (JAN 19 – FEB 19)

VIRGO (AUG 23 – SEP 22)

PISCES (FEB 19 – MAR 20)

Carefully steering your career path will remain important all winter and spring. Taking calculated risks, key initiatives and pioneering leads is extra important. Increasing your social network is likely. Yet you are probably wise to avoid long-term contracts to be ‘live on the stage’. Studio work will gain increasing appeal, especially by late summer. Building and strengthening your overall foundation is a central theme this year. This will include reaching out more to access the skills, services and talents of others. Your career and/or public/social life stands to expand as a result, especially from late spring onward. Realizing dreams and ideals in your relationships will become a priority, yet you will have to remain strong on your own feet.

You will be pushing yourself rather hard this year. This is especially a good idea earlier on. The more you can create a healthy momentum, literally, the better. Returns for sincere previous efforts will come in but not until late in the year. Continue to work others towards achieving greater harmony and to know better how they can prove to be useful allies. The thirst for new information will increase for you in 2012. Your conďŹ dences will rise steadily as well and before summer’s end you will see the world with signiďŹ cantly new perspectives. Yet your responsibility levels will reach new peaks before the year is complete. Bringing more feeling, depth and passion to your work and lifestyle will characterize the year. Making foundational changes linked to your talents, skills and other resources will characterize the year until late spring. Your ability to focus better will grow as the year progresses and your conďŹ dence levels will as well. Joining forces with others will become increasing necessary and ideal especially by late summer.

say it’s easy to get volunteers, but it would be nice to see some fresh faces.” Olaus would be 154 years old this year and Wegner said though it’s the 115th year of Winter Carnival, the event is still going strong. “We’ve got one heck of a line-up of events,” she said. After the Thursday presentation of Ski Bum the Musical, there are events all weekend. Just to get an idea,
