Realising a childhood dream was easier than expected with Trafalgar, says traveller Darren Mason. I was nine years old when The Karate Kid came out in 1984. The film inspired some ill-fated karate lessons, but also triggered a life-long interest in Japan.

guided holiday was included – like quality hotels in just the right location – but there were also experiences I could never have organised, or afforded, on my own.

Yet something always held me back from going – until a friend urged me to try Trafalgar. Guided trips were not on my radar, as I’d always travelled independently. But the itinerary for Splendours of Japan changed my mind.

We made sushi with a chef in Tokyo; met Tomoko at her ‘ryokan’ for a traditional ‘kaiseki’ meal; watched local artists create goldtipped chopsticks, having a go ourselves; and tasted fiery wasabi with steaming soba noodles, as local farmers told us about its cultivation.

Tokyo native and Trafalgar Travel Director, Kimi Tsukushi, loves sharing local culture with her guests: I originally became a Travel Director to improve my English, but after I got my licence and started work I realised I loved it. For me, the best part is being able to really share my country with our guests, and help them experience a culture and lifestyle that is often very far from their own. One of my favourite things is to take my guests to eat Okonomiyaki – like a Japanese pizza – in Tokyo. It’s delicious, and the atmosphere is so casual and relaxed. It shows guests a different side to Japanese culture and gives them the chance to meet local

people too. Hospitality and making people welcome is very important to us – when my guests tell me how friendly Japanese people are, and thank me for an amazing trip, it makes me so proud.

Sometimes these moments give a different viewpoint of the famous sights: taking the train journey over the Bridge over the River Kwai lets us uncover its sad history while we’re on the monument itself. And sometimes they show a twist on local life: in Japan, we wake early to join locals at a morning Buddhist service in their monastery.

Asia is a feast: it’s a continent filled with a vast variety of cuisines and dining experiences. We bring it all to you: like savouring classic Cantonese cuisine with locals in Hong Kong, or listening to the chatter of families as you enjoy fragrant pho at a Vietnamese noodle bar. Although the flavours are deliciously different, across Asia food brings communities together – as meals are shared with family and friends, old and new.‌ It’s this philosophy which inspires our dining experiences. Like our Welcome Receptions, where you can get to know your fellow guests and Travel Directors over drinks and appetisers. And our Farewell Meals are the perfect forum to relive memories, and share email addresses and ideas for future trips.

We are proud to commit to using one of the most environmentally friendly coated recycled papers on Planet Earth.
