The Allure of Eastern Europe

This issue... A chat with Trafalgar’s CEO Exploring America’s National Parks Beijing: Beyond the Great Wall

Dear Traveler, I just read that Americans throw away 266 million vacation days every year! I couldn’t believe that number, but everything this Huffington Post article said about ‘why you should take a vacation right now’ rang true with me…So how long has it been since your last real vacation? I’ve decided this will be the year that I don’t waste a single day. This summer my family’s going on Trafalgar’s Tastes & Sounds of the South vacation. Not only will we be celebrating my son’s 21st birthday, but it’s one of my all-time bucket list destinations – Elvis, Memphis, country and blues, the music capital of the world – there’s nothing like this at home in Australia! I’m also lucky my work is about taking vacations. This Spring, I’m taking our sales team to one of our hottestselling destinations, Peru! During our meeting we’ll be exploring the sights, history and culture like you can only on a Trafalgar trip. So take the inspiration I did and make the most of every minute! Whether you have seven days, two weeks or a month, our trips are designed to take care of all the hassles so you can simply relax and soak up an insider’s view of the destination. What are you waiting for? Happy travels,

Eastern Europe

Eastern Europe is a majestic landscape dotted with glorious palaces, iconic battlefields, and imperial delights. Not as heavily visited as its western cousins, the countries of Eastern Europe hold a magnificence that is well worth a visit. Three cities in particular – Prague, Vienna and Budapest – showcase this region’s diverse treasures.

Prague: The Most Beautiful City in the World

Prague is truly a golden city

with dreamy spires, an expansive castle, and the UNESCO-designated historical district that lies next to the Vltava River. Since Communism fell during the peaceful Velvet Revolution of 1989, Prague has prospered and restored many of its Art Nouveau and Baroque treasures. This jewel box of a city holds numerous delights for the intrepid traveler, from atmospheric bridges lined with statues to tucked-away neighborhoods holding small shops selling intricate Bohemian crystal. An expert Local Guide by your side is the best way to explore Prague’s delights, as a walk with one of them

will quickly open up the history and cultural lore of such famed spots as the Gothic marvel of St. Vitus’ Cathedral; Prague Castle, the biggest ancient palace in the world; the pedestrian-only Charles Bridge; and the incredible astronomical clock of Old Town Square. There are charming squares for prime people-watching and cafés on the river for taking in the local culture. Also renowned for its lively cultural scene, Prague teems with performers of all types, making this city the setting for some of the most amazing entertainment Europe has to offer. There are literally hundreds of concert halls, galleries, cinemas, night clubs, and theaters in the city. It just proves that the historical heart of Bohemia still beats in this gorgeous setting.

Waltz Into a Dream

The State Burgtheatre

No one could fail to be impressed by imperial Vienna, the glorious home to some of

the greatest thinkers, creators, and philosophers the world has ever known. Situated as it is along the Danube River, the site has seen the rise and fall of many cultures, including the Celts, the Romans, the Magyars, the great Babenburg Dynasty, the powerful Habsburgs, the Ottoman Empire, Napoleon’s French forces, the Austro-Hungarians, and the Germans. Each group left their mark, which can now be seen in such regal monuments as the impressive Hofburg Palace, the stately Parliament building, and the ornate St. Stephen’s Cathedral. Music is one of Vienna’s great legacies and more famous composers have lived here than any other city in the

world, earning it the nickname as the “City of Music.” World-class performers still sing from the stage of the grandiose State Opera House, and smaller theaters produce eclectic experimental plays and cabaret. More than four hundred balls are performed in various palaces throughout the city each year, and revelers have the opportunity to dance to fantastic live orchestras at parties that last through the night. Of course, no visit would be complete without stepping into one of Vienna’s ubiquitous coffee houses for refreshment and friendly conversation. Who knows, you may just be occupying the same seat as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Sigmund Freud, Gustav Klimt, or Gustav Mahler.

Castle in Krakow, Poland

Budapest treasures the historic while embracing the modern. Although around 30,000 buildings were destroyed during World War II and in the 1956 Revolution, the past lives on in the gorgeous architectural details of the impressive structures that remain. An informative Local Guide will be more than happy to share their city and point out these aspects and much more during walking tours that will help you get acquainted with this impressive city. Originally made up of the independent cities of Buda, Pest and Óbuda, the current metropolis of Budapest is the result of a unification effort in 1873. Today it’s the political, cultural and commercial heart of Hungary, and unique experiences abound for the curious visitor. Gaze out at the panoramic vistas from the Fisherman’s Bastion in the UNESCO-listed Castle District. Explore the towers of Matthias Church, originally built in the 13th century and the site of several coronations. See the impressive onion-shaped domes of

There are no such things as foreign lands, it’s the traveler that is foreign. A person goes into a country and discovers as a foreigner and the foreigner comes out richer from the experience.

We sat down with our leader and the ultimate Trafalgar insider, Gavin Tollman to learn what drives his passion for travel, hear about his most memorable moments and gain insights and useful travel advice. What is your proudest moment as Trafalgar CEO? Gavin: I try to join a couple trips a year and talk with our Trafalgar guests. Every time I hear their stories, hear how we’ve been able to fulfil someone’s travel dreams and allow them to discover and create memories they would never have been able to on their own, I’m filled with gratification.

Share a memorable travel experience. Gavin: I’ve probably been to Venice too many times to count, but yet every time I come into Venice on the water taxi and see St. Mark’s Basilica, my heart skips a beat. Every single time.

How often do you travel? Gavin: I travel a lot but due to my schedule I don’t always spend enough time in the destination. My Godfather, a man who inspires me, would add an extra day whenever he traveled for business to see an art gallery or iconic sight. I made this my most important New Year’s resolution this year.

When I travel, I never leave home without

Gavin: My iPad! It is small, light and easy to travel with. I’m always downloading books, and I get all my magazines on it – Economist, Conde Nast, Travel +Leisure, plus I’m able to read my emails.

What does being an “Insider” mean to you? Gavin: The ‘Insider’ is about the journey and what happens in “discovering.” It’s about getting a greater appreciation of a destination, understanding the beat of what makes a culture happen, grow and be different. As a child I remember reading something, something I’ve always brought into my life: there are no such things as foreign lands, it’s the traveler that is foreign. A person goes into a country and discovers as a foreigner, and the foreigner comes out richer from the experience.

What is your best piece of travel advice? Gavin: I always find if someone goes in with the understanding that there is something to be learned, it makes travel so much more fun and enriching. I encourage all travelers to discover the food and art of a country. You’ll find me going out of my way to eat local foods and meet local artists and artisans. Gavin recently hosted a Be My Guest experience, read about it in the full interview online at
