HIGH FEED MILLING Q & A operations. Round insert cutters are often used for cavity work but once the depth of cut matches the insert radius, which occurs when the cutter meets the wall of the cavity, huge vibrations can result, especially if milling into a corner where the direction of the milling path changes.

Q. When should you use High Feed Milling?

A. Because HFM offers the highest possible metal removal rates it should be used whenever you want to remove as much material as possible in the shortest possible time. The small cutting depth gives a much better surface finish than traditional methods, opening new opportunities for near net shape machining therefore eliminating the need of a semi finish stage. HFM has its greatest advantage in operations requiring a long overhang on the tool or when machining is in unstable conditions.

As times change you need to keep abreast with the latest cutting technology and in today’s economic climate machine time costs money that could put you behind your competitors. Using Seco’s High Feed milling range of cutters will reduce machining time making your company more profitable and maintain that competitive edge.

Q. What is High Feed Milling?

A. High Feed Milling is a roughing method of machining developed for extremely high metal removal rates to increase productivity and decrease machining time. It’s a method that permits up to three times faster machining than conventional methods. Instead of cutting with greater depth, and shortening tool life, HFM combines shallow depth of cut with high feed per tooth which results in greater metal removal rates.

Q. How does High Feed Milling work?

A. By combining a shallow depth of cut (maximum 2.5mm depending on the cutter) with a large cutting radius or a small setting angle you are sure that the cutting forces are directed towards the machine spindle in an axial direction.

This gives greater tool stability which allows for greatly increased feed rates– sometimes up to 10 times the normal rate! High Feed Milling Q. What are the benefi ts of High Feed Milling?

A. High Feed Cutters generate less vibration than conventional cutters due to the more favorable direction of the cutting forces. This makes these cutters extremely suitable for unstable conditions. These cutters have a predictable and long tool life due to the cutting forces, therefore lowering tool costs. With square shoulder cutters the feed force is at 90 degrees to the spindle axis often resulting in vibration or chatter, especially with extended overhangs. Q. What Applications are best suited to High Feed Milling?

A. HFM cutters are very flexible tools and can be used in a number of applications: • Face Milling is the first step to a perfectly level surface. Tolerances of less than Ra = 2 μm are regularly achieved. High Feed Milling can be used for all materials, all steels including hardened tool steels, aluminium and all of the stainless steel range. Inserts are available to machine all of these materials using the same cutter body.

• Copy Milling is used to machine uneven surfaces. It is important to select the right diameter tool according to the workpiece size and detail to be machined.

• Cavity Milling in the mold and die industry.

• Helical Interpolation can be used to make large diameter holes without pre- drilling. The High Feed cutters minimal contact with the wall

Q. What range of High Feed Milling cutters are available?

A. SECO Tools manufacture a range of HFM cutters, ranging from: • Solid Carbide cutters 1.0mm thru to 16.0mm diameter for small work pieces and cavities.

• The MiniMaster range of HFM cutters are available from 8mm up to 16mm and offer more flexibility, for each diameter there are different shank versions which will give optimal tool length for the application.

• Indexable insert cutters from SECO start at 16mm diameter and go up to 160mm diameter.

These include shanked cutters and shell end mill bodies.

• A range of indexable insert cutters with cassette bodies has been developed specifically for face milling and range from 88mm to 208mm diameter.

Q. Do you need a modern CNC machine for High Feed Milling?

A. Older machines that can’t feed over 3000mm/ min may not get the full benefi ts of high feed techniques as a newer machine can. But they are nevertheless suitable since many of the HFM tools are of smaller diameters and will work even with feed rates only just above 2000mm/min. any questions?
