Boost your Broadband Good news for long-suffering broadband users! New rules are now in place that means broadband providers will be forced to advertise the speeds that at least half their customers actually receive. Before they could get away with promoting the speed that only the top 10% received. Broadband is one of the most complained-about services I hear about at Resolver. We’ve had over 30,000 complaints over the last few years. By far the biggest issue is broadband speed not delivering, not working at all or regularly packing in. This is the source of much frustration for you all, given it means waiting in for an engineer for most of the day, not to mention some infuriating callcentre ‘experiences’.

back up your complaint. · Ask for options. Speak to your broadband provider (send them a tweet or get in touch online if you want to dodge the call centre), you could ask for something to boost the speed, get a reduction in your payments – or they may even have a fix.

But here are a few tips to help you out if your slow service is leaving you disconnected.

· Give your signal a boost. There are lots of things you can do to improve your broadband signal, from making sure your router is near the phone line, using cables not WiFi, upgrading your router and reducing the number of electrical items that might be giving off signals nearby. Even the humble old fish tank can cause problems if it’s got filters and other electrical items plugged in to it.

· Check your speed. There’s loads of free apps that you can download that will allow you to check the actual speed of your broadband connection. Our friends at MoneySavingExpert have a great guide on their website covering your options. The key thing to do is take a screenshot each time you check on your phone so you’ve got some evidence to

· Getting techy. You can get booster boxes and cables from most electronic stores to help you with your signal problem. Your broadband provider will also provide these but ask any engineer who pops round and they’ll tell you to buy them from a different store or online as they’ll be much cheaper. Most of these boosters are designed to improve your

I’m speaking to all the big broadband providers to tell them what they need to do to win round their frustrated customers. I’m also tackling exit fees… but more on that in another column!

WiFi signal around the house, but some also help improve your broadband speed. Check before you buy to make sure the goods do what you need them to. · Take it higher. Still not happy? Resolver can help you make a complaint, but it pays to set out your argument in simple terms. If you want out of the contract, provide proof of the poor service and the efforts you’ve made to sort it out. This is where those screenshots you’ve taken come in helpful. When making a broadband complaint, it pays to have evidence of the problems you’ve faced, dates when you contacted the business and when engineers came around. Though you must give the broadband provider a fair shot at sorting out the problem, if they don’t take the opportunity to do so, you can take it further. Broadband speed isn’t definitively guaranteed, but you can argue that you’re not getting the service you paid for it it’s constantly disrupted. So, if you feel you’ve been misled in to taking out a contract or the business simply can’t provide what they promised, don’t get mad – let them know.

• The Pet Show, the UK’s largest indoor & outdoor multi-pet event returns to the Stafford County Showground on the 18th-19th August 2018! The Pet Show brings together all creatures great and small, and showcases the very best that the UK’s pet industry has to offer. Split into dedicated animal zones, each one teeming with experts, meet and greet areas, live demonstrations, exciting displays and trade stands brimming with goodies for pets. Whether a pet owner, pet professional or pet enthusiast, there’s something for everyone. The show is also dog friendly, so if you have a canine pal – bring them along! The show is broken down into seven different animal zones; The Kennels, The Cattery, The Hutch & Run, The Aviary, The Vivarium, The Aquarium and

Animal Discovery. Each zone is full of adorable animals to meet and interactive features for the whole family. There will be the chance to meet and greet micro pigs, alpacas, miniature Shetland ponies, parrots, chinchillas, guinea pigs, tarantulas, pythons and so much more! Don’t forget that each zone also features trade stands from the best of British brands where you can find food, treats, toys and housing for your pets. The Pet Show 2018 will also see the return of one of the most popular features from previous years; The Dog Breed Village. This area lets you meet a huge range of different breeds from the massive Irish Wolfhound all the way down to the tiny Chinese Crested, and plenty in between! This is a great way to get to know a certain breed before adding one to your family,

and each stand is manned by experts who will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have.

The extremely popular dog agility display will also be returning for 2018, showcasing their impressive training and tricks. What’s more, there will even be the chance to enter your own canine pal in our Fun Dog Show. Visitors and their dogs can compete for the title of ‘Best Crossbreed’, ‘Best Pedigree’, ‘Best Rescue Story’ and even the ‘Waggiest Tail’.

Tiny, almost to the point of

dumpy, this little brown bird is

easy to spot when you know to

The little wren is the most

EAt, DRINk AND BE MARRIED At tHE RADDlE INN

Buried deep in the Staffordshire Moorlands countryside, overlooking the ruins of Croxden Abbey, in the rustic working village of Hollington sits a popular and versatile country inn. Set in an area of native woodland, moorland and pastoral land, this charming watering hole is one of the counties best loved local lunch spots, a top accommodation choice for visitors to Alton Towers and a lush wedding venue for budding brides everywhere. We are of course talking about The Raddle Inn; a perennial favourite with pensioners for their legendary lunch deals; a boutique accommodation destination with log cabins, hot tubs, self catering cottages, camping pods and caravan hook ups. Holiday makers to the area

can choose from The Rocks Cottage; a three bedroom traditional stone built place; accommodation for up to 10 includes a four poster, a king size and a room with bunk beds and a 8 man hot tub. There’s a large bathroom with shower over bath. Daisy Cottage is a recent barn conversion and sleeps six with a king size, a twin and a double sofa bed and hot tub. Cosy log cabins are available of varying size with or without hot tub for your pleasure on a self catering or bed and breakfast basis. Ideal for visitors to Alton Towers, Uttoxeter Racecourse, The Peak District National Park and The Potteries. This year the venue is hosting the annual Hollington Church Fayre. The event, organised to raise funds for the restoration of the local village church, St John the Evangelist, is a big date in

the local calendar. Packed with excitements such as Dog Agility course, Morris Men, and a riotous Tug O’ War finale, the day looks set to be full of fun. There’s a delicious food stall selling all the favourites including hot-dogs, beef burgers and mouth watering home made cakes. For the entertainment of children there’s face painting, ice cream and a bouncy castle, and for the older and more skilful child there’s a coconut shy, traditional skittles and splat-the-rat popular with all ages. Hollington Village Fayre takes place on 26th August and is opened by Richard Oldham at 12:30pm. Admission is just £1 for adults, there is no charge for children under 12 and car parking is free.

GARDENING TIPS Your Garden in July/August Now is the time to give your lawn a high Nitrogen summer feed. Mow on a regular basis but during hot, dry spells, raise the blades slightly to reduce stress on the grass. Keep hanging baskets and patio pots well watered, this will need to be done every day or even twice a day in very hot weather. At the same time remove faded flowers to encourage new growth, this will

keep your display looking fresh. As the first flush of flowers fade on your roses it is vital to deadhead them. Prune back the flowered stem to just above a leaf or sideshoot, this will lead to new shoots, followed by new flowering stems. Keep greenhouses from getting very hot by leaving vents and doors open, also damp down the path to raise humidity, in the

greenhouse, keep a close check for signs of greenfly, whitefly and spider mite. Check your garden every week for weeds and take action to control them. If you can keep on top of this task at this time of year then this will prevent them from seeding and being a bigger problem later in the summer. Robin Harper Mount Nurseries

Celebrity Interview

Anthony McPartlin by Tim Saunders Anthony McPartlin, the Bafta award winning TV personality, has just moved into a £4.5m London mansion to aid his recovery from addiction. The gated property in South West London has a separate flat for staff or guests, gardens overlooked by a balcony and a games room but no swimming pool. This comes after the troubled presenter, who stars alongside his best friend Declan Donnelly, has been in rehab since crashing his Mini a few months ago. Charged with drink driving and slapped with an £86,000 fine and a 20-month driving ban, his presenting duties at ITV have been suspended. It’s been a tough few years for multimillionaire Ant (42) whose estimated wealth stands, it is claimed, at £62m or £79,000 a day – the same as Declan Donnelly. The pair also own £10m of property together. Ant, who has a holiday home in the Algarve, Portugal, is expected to spend more time out there. In 2017 he had his first experience of rehab when he was admitted as the result of his addiction to prescription and non-prescription drugs following a knee injury and operation. “The doctors told me, ‘You could have killed yourself,’” he revealed in an exclusive interview in The Sun newspaper. Then in January 2018 he announced that his 11-year marriage to makeup artist Lisa Armstrong had ended in divorce. It is possible that Lisa could receive half his fortune. Recently, Ant has been pictured taking his dog Harley (which he owns with Lisa) for a walk in London. He shares his love of dogs with Dec, who owns a dachshund called Rocky. Ant and Dec also share a passion for cars. In fact, in 2013 the pair treated themselves to a supercar each. Ant bought himself a £136,000 British racing green Aston Martin capable of 200mph while Dec spent £14,000 more on a slightly slower black Ferrari California. After Ant’s car crash Declan was forced to present ITV’s Saturday Night Takeaway alone. ITV’s Good Morning Britain presenter Piers Morgan says that Dec should now “carry on without Ant”.

When Ant joined the cast of BBC’s Byker Grove in 1990 he met Dec who had been on the show since 1989. After leaving the series in 1994 they launched a pop career as their Byker Grove characters PJ & Duncan. Their on-screen chemistry proved highly saleable and they moved into presenting Saturday morning children’s show SMTV Live, which launched the career of Cat Deeley, as well as CD:UK, a music chart show. Moving away from children’s TV they have had success with Saturday Night Takeaway and are also well-known for presenting I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here and Britain's Got Talent. Born in Newcastle in 1975 he was awarded an OBE in 2017 (as was Dec) for services to entertainment by Prince Charles at Buckingham Palace. Ant appears to have given up smoking preferring to use a vape instead now. Neither Ant nor Dec has any children. Tim Saunders is an author, journalist and businessman. He meets celebrities, goes on holiday and road tests cars.

The Hundred Moot and a priest arrives in Forsbrook 671AD

Over the years the village and population of Fotrsbrock grew steadily with each family working together producing a small but self-sufficient community. Alwyn the great grandson of the founder Fotr had become headman by election and took his prominent position as the ‘Reeve’.

cultivated and well maintained hay meadow for the second time in as many months Alwyn was certain that the incursions had been a deliberate act by their neighbours for they themselves only had a rough common on which to graze their animals.

Now married with his wife Udela and five children he had overseen many new developments such as good meadowland which spread alongside the brook that gently flowed through the village towards their neighbours at Foulford.

And so it was that Alwyn decided to take their complaint to the annual gathering of the ‘folk-moot’ at Tatmonnslhaw, just a short walk from their village held each midsummer.. Accompanied by three of his closest compatriots he was determined to prove his case or exact recompense… and if necessary by force.

Only the people of nearby Cafereswelle caused them problems, for their cattle had trespassed through the wood that separated the two homesteads at least twice this year. After almost destroying the

The ‘moot’ assembly was a large congregation of villagers from all across the district to which all manner of issues could be brought and discussed, cases of complaint were heard and justice indirectly dispensed.

On this occasion the men of Cafereswelle sought to justify their trespass stating that some of their land had been illegally cultivated by the villagers from Fotrsbrock. Alwyn who was not a man to be challenged when he had a sword in his hand immediately demanded ‘folk frith’, for this insult of being called a thief. His right to challenge and settle the matter using combat was an ancient tradition amongst Anglo Saxon peoples. Deliberation over the matter took several minutes before the ealdormen gave their consent to his request. Without their consent and agreement Alwyn could do nothing. Having previously experienced family and village feuding in the past the ‘Reeve’ from Cafereswelle realised that the usual protection provided by the

www.tradelocally.co.uk ‘moot’ had been removed and the villagers from Fotrsbrock were given the ‘open hand’ to exact revenge. Humbly he bowed to the assembly and accepted the bitter taste of defeat and agreed to the harsh terms to settle with the loss of one third of their own hay crop to be collected at the first harvest moon. (August). The moot lasted sometimes for several days but always ended with news about and commands from King Wulfhere who lived in far off ‘Tomworðig’ (Tamworth). Standing beside Algar the Kings Theign were several mysteriously brown robed strangers with shorn hair which had been shaved clean on the crown and who wore beardless faces. Suddenly the white haired eldest one addressed the crowd in a loud voice. Raising their right hand he spoke in an unfamiliar tongue which no one could understand. Then in an uncompromising manner which everyone fully understood, Algar told them that they were all to become Christians and give up their ungodly ways and submit to the ‘priests’ before them. What this meant Alwyn did not fully understand or even worse how he would explain this to the others in the village. He was soon however to discover the truth and how this edict would change his life forever. Introducing himself as Brother Joseph a squat young man no older than eighteen summers, had a determined look about him when he explained to Alwyn that he could no longer work on Sunnandæg, that marriages could only be undertaken through the offices of his new

church which was to be built in nearby Dulverne…. and under no circumstances could the villagers pray to the old gods, even though they all had days named after them. This command also included not celebrating the many feast days that the villagers enjoyed throughout the year such as dressing the well with flowers in the "Month of Three Milkings (May) Much grumbling ensued and many spoke that their harvest would fail, leading to famine and plague. Would this Jesus help them to grow their crops, particularly if the priest was to take one tenth of everything they grew as a new tax called a tithe? Shaking their heads and doubting what the future had to offer, their protests fell on deaf ears for they knew they had to submit to the King’s commands. ‘Over the ensuing years the influence upon the lives of the commonfolk of Fotsbrok by the expanding church grew. Attending upon the village priest on the sabbath became compulsory but had the painful drawback of having to work yet another day in the fields to pay for his expected 10% tithe required for his upkeep. The only benefit many could see was that one day each week the family were not allowed to work despite the time of year or weather and the somewhat vague promise of everlasting life in the hereafter. In the failing light of a warm summer evening in the year 670AD a great procession of horses came ambling along the old Roman Road that still ran close to the village. Leaving their work in the fields many of the

excited villagers went to see the comotion being caused by the colour and spectacle of the parade of important people led by a rather small man wearing a bright green cloak. However instead of the usual brief sight of passing strangers the column actually came to a halt leaving everyone marvelling at the sight of him dismounting his horse to stretch his legs. Immediately our priest Alwyn pressed to the front of the startled group and fell to his knees, with his head bowed and took the man’s hand and kissed his ring. Unheard by the bewildred onlookers the two walked for a while and chatted... what about no one could hear... but no sooner had this ‘saint’ arrived and then the party was gone....but who was he ? Only later after a flaggon of ale, when Alwyn had recovered his senses, did they discover that he was Bishop Chad from Lichfield!’

* this beautiful stained glass window of Saint Chad can be found in All Saint’s Church, Dilhorne.

Beating the Summer Blues

Ah, the summer holidays. With the weather getting hotter (and the kids stuck at home), many of us will be packing our bags and jumping on a plane to get away from it all. Flight delays are by far the most complainedabout travel trauma – and Resolver helped over 120,000 people reclaim their money for free last year. Delays can be caused by lots of problems – anything from sudden snowstorms, foggy mornings or even the occasional active volcano. But if you’re raring to go on holiday – or you’re ready to go home – flight delays are certainly frustrating. You can’t pre-empt a flight delay unfortunately, but you can stack the odds in your favour. Make sure that you book a flight that leaves earlier in the day, for example. The fast turnaround time of the budget airlines means if there’s a delay at any of their stops during the delay, it will carry over till later. Night time flights may be cheaper, but you may find you’re waiting around longer – and missing your transport connections when you get home. But what else can you do to avoid a travel trauma? Here’s a few tips: Get insured. A surprisingly substantial number of people travel without insurance. From missing baggage to delayed flights, it’s cover you can’t afford to travel without. Make sure you start the policy now, not just before you travel. That way you can avoid getting caught out cancellation costs. Keeping the kids calm. Keeping the kids occupied if you’re delayed can be stressful. Take some disposable items like colouring books to keep them occupied so you’re not weighed down before you board. Planning ahead: Make sure you’ve got some flexibility built in with your booking with your hotel too. Call ahead and confirm and write down the contact details. Make sure you’ve checked out the cancelation policy before you book – and book direct from the hotel if you can. Cancellation can sometimes be a little more complicated if you’ve booked through a third party.

Expect the unexpected: So, you look at the baggage carousel desperately, but your luggage is missing. What next? Well your insurer should be able to help with an emergency payment but avoid the holiday being ruined by having emergency cash. Take a credit card specifically for holidays (don’t use it the rest of the time – lock it in a drawer!) That way you’ve got access to funds if there’s a problem. Get the details of the problem: If your flight is delayed, stay calm. Ask for written confirmation of the delay and what you’re entitled to if things don’t improve (like food vouchers, for example). Keep the documents should you need to claim. You can use Resolver’s free website to claim for delays and cancelations up to six years ago! Hiring a rental car: If you’re planning on getting a rental car abroad, make sure you take an inventory of everything that’s wrong with the car when you get it. We hear too many stories of people being caught out by charges for damage that was already on the car! Always get the rental people to sign off anything you spot that might be wrong – even if they tell you it isn’t necessary. Other disasters: It’s a good idea to snap a few pics of your passport and travel documents and save them under a well-hidden file on your phone or online? Don’t save your pin numbers though! If you lose your stuff, you can always get hold of people who could help you.

Household Tips Keep on top of your closet by putting aside a small area or bag ready to drop clothes that are no longer wanted so that you can regularly take them to charity shops.

AUTO-BIOGRAPHIES

Hyundai i30N Review South Korean motoring giant, Hyundai, has created a brand new ‘N Division’, which has sparked the awesome new i30 N. The regular variant gets a 251PS petrol turbo unit, but it’s the 275PS Performance Package i30 N that I was handed the keys to. This car gets bigger brakes to scrub the extra speed off. At the front of the model, there’s also a no-nonsense electronic differential, which decides all sorts of smart things to keep the front wheels biting into the bitumen. The i30 N’s chassis is electronically damped - and the arrangement has been designed to supply all-out precision. At the same time, the system doles out a good dose of refinement, meaning comfort is not in short supply. What’s more, the car has state-of-the-art electronic dampers at each corner that empower it to do things some other challengers can’t even consider - both on tarmac and on track. The i30 N also belts out a banging tune of its own. Seriously, the car sounds incredible. And when the pedal is pushed to the metal in third gear, all sorts of crackles and pops fire from the tailpipes. What’s most extraordinary, however, is how the i30 N handles, turns and comes to a halt. The steering is outstandingly precise, and the car doesn’t feel edgy at the rear whatsoever. This is some feat, considering that it takes the Hyundai a mere 2.2 turns from lock to lock.

The handling is unreservedly razor-sharp, even in ‘Normal’ setting. Things get spicier in ‘Sport’ mode, and there’s a ‘Custom’ choice in which you can alter the car’s specific characteristics. The i30 N also has, perhaps unsurprisingly, an ‘N’ mode. This is only meant for using on a track really, so the ride quality is stiff and hard-nosed. But if you’re in the right frame of mind and the weather and road conditions are okay, then it is a grin-inducing system. The throttle map and exhaust become zestier, while the dampers become more unyielding. Furthermore, any interruption from the Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) is played right down. Out and out performance is heavy-duty from the 2.0-litre petrol turbo powerplant in all settings. It never feels too much, though - and the six-speed manual transmission hops through the cogs satisfyingly. The hot Hyundai’s straight-line talent is blisteringly impressive, but it is the i30 N’s chassis that blows you away. This is the feature that remains indelibly etched on my mind. It’s my ‘take-away’ memory of the car if you like. Sure, this isn’t the fastest hatchback ever made – but the point is, not many cars in this segment will have such an excellent chassis set-up.

authority in the hot-hatch market. Therefore, an on-the-road pricetag of £27,995 is more than respectable, bearing in mind how capable the 2.0 T-GDi 275PS N Performance is behind the wheel. Moreover, the car is jampacked with kit, and it feels well screwed together. Pros ‘n’ Cons • Fast √ • Fun √ • Handling √ • Looks √ • Badge image X Fast Facts (2.0 T-GDi 275PS N Performance – as tested) • Max speed: 155 mph • 0-62 mph: 6.1 secs • Combined mpg: 39.8 • Engine layout: 1,998cc fourcylinder petrol turbo • Max. power (PS): 275 • CO2: 163 g/km • Price: £27,995

And, here’s the occasionally thorny bit – the price. Well, with this Hyundai there is no issue. The South Korean firm knew it had to chip away at the main competition to give itself
