Hello again, We are now approaching the end of our third year of publication, how quickly time passes. Looking back our objective at the beginning was to fill a gap in the market by providing a Local Community Magazine in our immediate area. The purpose is to make the community aware of the wealth of local amenities and facilities available to us, the local charities and causes that need our support and to promote the use of independent local businesses for our purchases wherever possible. Trade Locally is not funded or supported other than by advertising revenue provided by our local advertisers for whom we provide a range of targeted, simple and efficient low cost advertising opportunities. It proves the value of targeted local advertising when so many of our advertisers stay with us in the long term. We do not just service the areas our Magazine covers, for those outside the distribution area you can still see all the magazines and more on line at http://www.tradelocally.co.uk/. Why not have a look at our website, like us on facebook and follow us on twitter? Our website is updated regularly throughout the year with much more information than we are able to include in the magazine plus the latest deals and offers, new advertisers etc as they appear. If anyone has any local news or events, charities or appeals they would like published free of charge subject to space then by all means let us know. If it`s Local we are interested. Thanks for your time

GARDENING Your garden in June It should be safe by now to plant out your Summer Bedding Plants and put up your hanging baskets. Some of the tender herbs such as Basil and French Tarragon can now also be planted outdoors. In the veg garden earth up the soil around emerging potato plants to get a bigger crop Runner Beans and French Beans can go outside now. Keep tying in Tomatoes and feed them weekly, in the perennial border trim back any early flowering plants such as Geraniums and Dicentras, these will flower again in about four

weeks time. Also deadhead Lupins and Delphiniums and these will quickly re-flower. Perennial borders are best weeded by hand to prevent damage to emerging stems that a hoe could cause, a hand fork is the best tool to lift the weeds out in one piece. Formal hedges such as yew and box can be trimmed now to keep their shape and thicken them up, this is also a good time to apply a granular feed and water in well. I have been growing a strain of begonias which have been bred by

Fred Yates in Cheshire for two years now, this year however, I have proper quantities available of the trailing type called “Amour and Devotion” which are stunning in hanging baskets or window boxes. I also have two bush type called “Glowing Embers” and “Cherry Bonbon” which are stunning in pots or in tubs on the patio. These Begonias all come under the name “Million Kisses” and are well worth a try you will not be disappointed by them. Robin Harper Mount Nurseries, Spot Gate

ST MARGARET’S SUMMER FAYRE 2014 If you enjoy Top Gear on the television, you’ll be making a bee-line for this year’s St Margaret’s Summer Fayre in Draycott-in-the-Moors (near Cheadle). This year it takes place on Sunday 13th July. Not only are there 200 old cars and tractors on show as part of the Vintage Rally, and demonstrations of working engines by collectors, but, this year, there is even more. A 1950s double-decker bus will be on-site to provide passengertrips; a miniature railway is offering rides (for kids of all ages!); and a World War Two Dakota aeroplane will be doing a fly-past. The Stig would love it... But, of course, there is more to the event than transport. The fayre is a traditional country occasion, with the usual participation-events such

as a dog-show and country games. Craft-stalls manned by local residents, and skillsdisplays from local community organisations, will give a real family-friendly air to the day. Yes... this is no ‘corporate’ event – local organisers are behind almost every activity you will see, and the day’s profits all go to restoring the village’s ancient church. But, if you are still wavering, there are two other main attractions which you will enjoy. The fantastic Y-Draig group re-enact the Viking era, with authentic costumes and encampments. They will demonstrate Viking fighting skills too – though, when Y-Draig challenged the village’s children to battle last year, the poor Vikings were put to flight!

the live-music bill. Worth the admission fee just by himself... And don’t worry – there will be a small fun-fair for toddlers, and a bar and refreshments are laid on, as are portable toilets. A giant marquee will keep us all dry, should the weather be a little unkind. Parking – in the next field – is free. Admission to the ground is £4 for adults; kids under sixteen are allowed in free. The fayre is held, as usual, right in the centre of the village on Uttoxeter Road (ST11 9AE) with gates open at 11am. Full details and updates can be found on the Draycott Village website - or phone John Clarke 01782 396190. Hope to see you there!

Meanwhile, the famous jazzbusker Eric Newton will lead

the

LEGAL EAGLE Neighbours Trees—your rights By Dean Dunham of Consumer UK Over the last few months I have received lots of questions about what rights are in place when a neighbours tree encroaches into your garden. Here’s what you need to know before you get out your hacksaw and start chopping branches off:

to take action. The owner of the tree must comply with the notice. If they do not, the local authority will do the necessary work and recover the costs from the owner. The owner can appeal to the county court against the notice.

Can I cut my neighbour’s tree back? If your neighbour’s tree hangs over into your land you should firstly ask your neighbour to trim back the tree. If they refuse or ignore your request, you are well within your rights to trim the tree back yourself but only the parts that overhang your land and you can only trim back to the boundary line. There is, however, an exception to the above when there is a Tree Preservation Order in place protecting the tree. If this is the case you will need to seek authority from the local authority before taking any steps.

If you want the local authority to take action, you will need to find out which department deals with dangerous trees as this varies from one local authority to another. You can then ask this department to check the condition of the tree. It is up to the local authority to decide if the tree is on the point of causing damage. If they consider it is not on the point of causing damage, they don't have to take any action. An overhanging tree may also be a danger. For example, most parts of a yew tree are poisonous. If any damage or injury is caused, the tree owner will be liable to pay compensation if a person affected brings a claim for damages.

I live in a conservation area. Trees are thought to contribute to the character of conservation areas, so even if the tree in question isn't subject to a preservation order, if you live in one of these areas, you'll need to contact the council to give notice of proposed work. This applies to trees with a trunk diameter greater than 75mm measured 1.5m above ground level. You can't start work before a six week notice period has elapsed unless the council gives you permission to go ahead before then. Dead, dying and dangerous trees are exempt, but you'll still need to check with the council to ensure this applies to your tree. Once again, you can be prosecuted and fined if you don't follow the rules. My neighbour’s tree is dangerous, what can I do? In England and Wales, local authorities have powers to deal with trees on private property which are on the point of causing damage. A local authority can:-

 make the tree safe, if it is on the point of causing

damage and are asked to do so by the owner of the land on which the tree stands. The local authority will recover the costs of doing this from the owner

 make a tree safe on someone else’s land, if asked to do

My neighbour’s tree is blocking out my light There are no laws that allow a right to light per se and you will be unable to force the neighbour to do anything. But if the tree is blocking light from a window in your house or a green house, you can acquire the right to light with the help of your local authority and you should contact them first to see how helpful they might be. If you have enjoyed a certain level of light for 20 uninterrupted years the law states that it is reasonable for you to expect the same level of light and you can go to court for relief. You should also check your deeds to see if they contain a covenant stating that your neighbour must not block your light. If I cut my neighbour’s tree can I dispose of the branches? You are actually required by law to hand the cut branches back to your neighbor as they form part of the tree that is their property. However, unless it’s a fruit tree it is unlikely that they will want them back as they will only have to dispose of the debris. You should ask them if they do want the branches back and if they say no record it in writing before disposing of them.

so by a neighbour whose property is in imminent danger from the tree and the owner of the land on which the tree stands is not known s

 serve a notice on someone who has a tree which is on the point of causing damage to the property of a neighbour and that neighbour asks the local authority

Ideal for a lunchbox filler, picnic or afternoon snack, this twist on a traditional pizza turns this dish into something that resembles a blend of a Cornish pasty and savoury pastry. Serve with a crisp green salad for a larger meal.

Ingredients:

Equipment: Flat tray, covered with baking parchment

500g packet ready roll puff pastry 1 egg 1 onion 400g tub passata ½ green pepper 2 tablespoons cooking oil 2 tablespoons tomato puree Pepper and salt Teaspoon oregano 5 thinly sliced mushrooms 4 slices of ham chopped 250g Grated Mozzarella cheese

Method: Flat tray, covered with baking parchment To make the pizza sauce, chop the onion and pepper finely and put in a pan with the oil on a medium heat. When the onion is soft add the passata and the tomato puree, stir in well, add the oregano and salt and pepper and leave to simmer for 5 minutes. When cooked take off the stove and leave to cool. Take the puff pastry and roll onto a floured surface about 3-4 mm thick. Cut into 12 equal squares. Beat the egg in a cup and brush the squares. Spoon the tomato sauce diagonally along each square, place on the sliced mushrooms and the chopped ham. Place a handful of mozzarella cheese on each square and in the opposite corners and squeeze them to seal in the filling. Place on a baking sheet. Brush the outside with egg and bake on the middle shelf in the oven until pastry is golden brown and cooked underneath.

LEWIS Motoring

It’s not yet time to hoot the horn in celebration, but things are looking a tad better for drivers. There was no Budget petrol tax rise, and a supermarket price war sees costs now at an average £1.29/litre – that's 13p less than the peak, while insurance prices have come off their peak too. Yet if the Stig's helmet had eyes, even they'd probably still water about the fact that car running costs alone are an average £3,500/year. So I want to help you rev up your motoring savings. Note the free website PetrolPrices.com lists the day’s cheapest petrol stations in your area for unleaded, diesel, LPG and other fuels. Hidden council MOT centres can mean fewer fails. 40% of MOTs fail first time, often for trivialities such as bust light bulbs or poor windscreen wipers. So always do a quick walk-around and, where possible, fix before. For the test itself, if you've a long-term trusted garage, great. If not, little-known council MOT test centres generally don't do repairs, so have less incentive to fail you. The feedback on these is great, with many saying they get far fewer fails. There’s a full list at www.mse.me/mots Has the PHOTO on your licence expired? You risk a £1,000 fine. While the licence itself may be valid, the photo needs renewing every 10 years. Two million have expired, so check your card's section 4b date and if it’s expired, go to www.gov.uk/renew-driving-licence to renew. There's no one cheapest insurer, so the aim's to get as many quotes as possible. Yet different comparison sites cover different insurers, so always check at least two for a wider spread. Then check the ones they miss – including biggies www.aviva.co.uk and www.directline.com .Yet it’s also about understanding the counter-logical ways to save. - Third party's not always cheapest. Even though it’s meatier cover, the mere fact of selecting comprehensive insurance makes some insurers consider you a lower risk, which outweighs the cost for the bigger cover. So if you’re looking for the cheapest, always check both. - Got more than one car? Comparison sites only do single vehicles. Manually check www.admiral.com’s multi-car policy deals and, if time, www.churchill.com and

www.directline.com discounts. Young drivers, try adding parents as second drivers. Strange as it sounds, adding a responsible second driver to your policy can bring costs down. This is because insurance is about risk, so they can bring the average down. It's a case of trial and error with different firms. Yet never put someone as the main driver on the car unless they really are the main driver. Doing this falsely is called fronting; it’s illegal and can invalidate your insurance. Full help for under-25s car insurance costs in www.mse.me/youngdrivers. Private parking firms CAN'T fine you. Parking tickets from supermarkets, housing estates or any private car park do better impressions than Rory Bremner. Some even call themselves Parking Charge Notices to mimic official council Penalty Charge Notices. Yet they're not fines, just invoices. If a ticket's unfairly slapped on your windscreen (eg, there were no signs), reply explaining why it's unfair and that you won't pay. It may huff and puff, yet it can't "hit your credit record" or "send bailiffs" without the time and expense of court action. If it's an unfair council ticket, don't just accept it - you have rights. Of those appeals already turned down by councils, 50% win if they keep going to the final stage. Full help and template letters at www.mse.me/parking. Cut fuel use up to 30% by driving more efficiently. This isn’t about slowing down (though that can help if you’re a boy or girl racer). The real keys are: a) Change gear up earlier to keep revs down. b) Treat the accelerator like a money pump - the harder you press, the more fuel flows. c) Slow naturally rather than ramming the brakes to use up the car’s momentum. If possible, also reduce your vehicle’s weight and drag, then it needs less fuel to travel. So dejunk your trunk many carry unnecessary weight in the boot, correct your tyre pressure and more.

Health the

HARCOMBE WAY Carbohydrates, not calories, make you fat... by Zoe Harcombe

Back to food this month and let’s talk about my pet peeve – the government and dieticians continuing to advise people to “Eat less and do more”. Such advice drives people down the path of eating more carbohydrates – fruit, salad, crisp breads, cereal bars – all of these are staple foods for dieters and all are carbohydrates. People tend not to reach for steak and pork chops when they start a calorie-controlled diet and yet they would be better off eating meat than any processed diet food on the shelves... What is food? All food is carbohydrate, protein or fat – or a combination of two or three of those. Fruit is mostly carbohydrate, with some protein and virtually no fat. Meat is protein and fat and has no carbohydrate. Forget protein, as protein is in everything from lettuce to bread to fish. The two really interesting food groups are carbohydrates and fats. Both have protein in them, so, I’ll say it again – don’t worry about protein. The best way to remember the difference between a carbohydrate and a fat is that a fat either had a face, or comes from something with a face! All meat and fish were animals – with faces. Eggs, butter and cheese all come from animals – with faces. The exceptions are healthy oils like sunflower oil and olive oil (which come from sunflowers and olives), but don’t worry about these – the only fats you need to think about are the ones from the faces.

and how much should be stored for future requirements. As our blood glucose level rises, insulin is released from the pancreas and this insulin converts some of the glucose to glycogen. Glycogen is our energy store room. If all the glycogen storage areas are full, insulin will convert the excess to fatty tissue. This is why insulin has been called the fattening hormone. The easiest substance for the body to get energy from is carbohydrate. So, if your body spots that you’ve eaten a carbohydrate it says “Thank you very much – I’ll use that for my immediate energy needs and I’ll store any fat with it for later on”. The double whammy is that the body needs insulin to store fat, and it is only carbohydrates that cause insulin to be made. So your body can only store that fat, for later on, when you have eaten a carbohydrate! Need convincing? We have been fed (excuse the pun) the calorie theory for so long that it is sometimes difficult to stop eating low calorie foods and to go back to real foods. If you need convincing, try eating nothing but fat/protein for a few days (The Atkins Diet, for example) and see how much weight you lose. Note how many calories you eat during this time (try and make it over 2000 a day) and then repeat the experiment eating the same number of calories but in carbohydrates for the same length of time. See for yourself the power of insulin!

The good news is that you don’t have to eat like a caveman for the rest of your life. The Harcombe Diet shows you how to eat pasta, bread, fruit, dark Insulin is a hormone that is released by the pancreas chocolate and some wonderful carbs whilst still (an organ in your body) when you eat something that losing weight. The trick is which carbs you eat and raises your blood glucose level. Only carbohydrates what you eat them with. raise your blood glucose level. Fats have no impact on your blood glucose level at all and therefore the Zoë’s books (“Stop Counting Calories & Start Losing Weight”, body does not release any insulin when you eat fat “The Harcombe Diet Recipe Book”, “The Harcombe Diet For on its own. The pancreas releases insulin to get your Men”, Why do you overeat? When all you want is to be slim” blood glucose level back to ‘normal’. If it didn’t do and “The Obesity Epidemic: What caused it? How can we stop it”) are published by Columbus Publishing Ltd and are this you would be diabetic. Why are carbs so important?

When we eat carbohydrates, our body decides how much of the energy taken in is needed immediately

natural HEALTH Holiday Hints

By Ken Teppin (M.C.P.H)

Summer is here and many of us are looking forward to our holidays. In today’s hectic world we seem to depend more on having a good break than ever before. So what I would like to offer this month are some tips to help prepare and cope with potential problems. Firstly, regular readers of these articles will know of my three first aid tips. Arnica for any falls, knocks or any trauma resulting in bruising or bumps. Rescue Remedy for any shock to the system that results in upset or tears. Finally Aloe Vera Gelly for cuts, bites scratches and obviously, sunburn. A common problem when away from home is upset stomachs and digestive problems. The two main reasons for this tend to be food poisoning or over indulgence. Food poisoning is quite usual when having to cope with different food and drink. Our digestive enzymes are mainly used to our normal diet and, so consider other foods as toxic although local people can eat them with impunity. The homeopathic remedy Arsenicum 30 will often help. The sufferer will be cold, anxious and even tearful. They will have cramping pains in the stomach and also watery discharge. Also they will have marked weakness and fastidiousness. Over indulgence is something that we all can succumb to on holiday. We have more time to relax and tend to treat ourselves to extras that we normally avoid. Thus we end up the next day feeling bloated, nauseous and hung-over. The remedy suggested is Nux Vom 30. The indications for this are: the patient feels worse for being cold, or exertion. They will be quarrelsome, irritable and hypersensitive. Of

course I am not advocating over indulgence and then just take Nux Vom, but we all like to party sometimes. A couple of other first aid remedies are Apis 30 which is helpful for stings and severe reactions to stings and Nat Mur Tissue Salts for prickly heat. Finally I would like to talk about exposure to the sun or getting a tan, although I feel we should be cautious about over exposure and more importantly, quick extreme blasts of sunbathing. Some of the current advice about covering up all skin all of the time is a bit O.T.T. Why not spend some more time out of doors in the weeks building up to your holidays? Acclimatize yourself gradually, go for walks, and play outside with the children. Spend time sitting outside when you can. Little and gradual is a good maxim. When outdoors use a good quality protective cream. It just remains for me to wish you all a good summer and have a great time if you are going away on holiday. Good natural health!
