GRAHAM GOULDMAN & HEART FULL OF SONGS

With support from MATTHEW HARVEY

In 1972, along with Eric Stewart, Kevin Godley and Lol Creme, Graham Gouldman formed 10cc and enjoyed a string of Top 10 hits, including three No 1s - Rubber Bullets, I’m Not In Love and Dreadlock Holiday – along with Donna (No 2), Art For Art’s Sake and Good Morning Judge (both reaching No 5), The Things We Do For Love and I’m Mandy Fly Me (6), and The Wall Street Shuffle (10). It’s the enduring popularity of these tracks and Graham’s love of playing songs acoustically, that led to the formation of Heart Full of Songs, which features many of these songs, Bridge To Your Heart (from Graham’s time in Wax with the late Andrew Gold) and other compositions including film sound tracks and material from his acclaimed solo album Love And Work. Graham Gouldman formed what became Heart Full of Songs six years ago, purely for the pleasure of playing his songs in their simplest form, acoustically. For lovers of perfectly-crafted music performed by the composer, a Heart Full of Songs concert is truly an exquisite experience.

WOLF HALL LIVE

© Company Pictures/Playground Entertainment

Hilary Mantel’s award-winning novel Wolf Hall was transformed into a riveting six-part drama by the BBC to huge acclaim in 2015. Accompanying Thomas Cromwell’s machinations and hushed conversations in shadowy palace corners was original music by awardwinning composer Debbie Wiseman, performed by The Locrian Ensemble of London. In this concert, Debbie and the Ensemble perform selections from her acclaimed score, alongside extracts from Wolf Hall and its first sequel Bring Up The Bodies read by Anton Lesser - who played Thomas More in the BBC series. The concert roughly follows the narrative of the television series with Lesser’s intense readings setting the scene for a musical commentary. The most intense part of the concert must surely be the depiction of Anne Boleyn’s execution, as the impassioned readings leave the audience hanging on every word, with music that is gripping and moving in equal parts.

FRIGG (FINLAND)

A leading act on the Nordic scene, Frigg have dazzled Celtic Connections, The Scots Fiddle Festival, Fiddles On Fire, Cambridge Folk Festival, Orkney Folk Festival & many more. There’s an enthusiastic appreciation of their fiddle-founded Nordgrass sound - a mix of Nordic folk and bluegrass. Possibly the most exciting, uplifting, gut-wrenching & hip-twitching band in the Northern Hemisphere. Don’t miss this blizzard of jigs, reels & bluegrass inventions. Scandomusic as good as it gets! ‘Embracing everything from Nashville to Nordkapp, Salzburg to Stornoway, this Helsinki septet manages to sound like a polka band, a rock group, or a Riverdance ensemble, while remaining purely acoustic and firmly string-powered. Four fiddles, an upright bass, guitars and mandos: that’s all there is, but Frigg fill the air, live or on CD.’ Alex Monaghan, Folkworld
