The Minnie diaries

It’s 8am and there’s a flurry of activity in the David Kramer room at the Crystal Towers Hotel in Cape Town’s Century City. The make-up artist rolls her arsenal of brushes and powders out across the table, the camera crew adjusts the lighting, steam billows in the far corner as the stylist irons out every crease from the gorgeous garments that hang on the rails. We’re preparing for the arrival of Minenhle ‘Minnie’ Dlamini, the multitalented new Face of LEGIT. Looking fresh-faced, make-up free and yet strikingly beautiful, Minnie enters the room and her presence is immediately felt (and heard!). ‘Hello everyone!’ she beams with a smile that could melt the hardest heart. Her voice is surprisingly powerful, husky and confident for someone so deceptively demure and, well… mini! ‘I love being on camera,’ she smiles (confirming my perception). I’ve loved attention from an early age!’ I admire her no-shame attitude about admitting something that to some would seem vain. ‘I hate the idea of walking into a room with no one noticing,’ she adds, erupting with laughter. The make-up artist faffs around her as I eagerly try to learn what makes this new ‘it girl’ tick.

10h00 – 13h00: I generally have meetings, securing clients for my company. 13h00 – 13h30: I try to eat healthily but I grab a quick lunch. 13h30 – 14h30: I head to the Live set at Urban Brew Studios to check on things and make sure everything is going according to plan. 14h30 – 15h30: I record voice-overs for the links and promos for that week’s show. 15h30 – 17h00: Then I source the outfit I’ll be wearing on the show that week. If I’ve got events, I also meet up with any designer who would like to dress me for that week, and we’ll brainstorm wardrobe ideas. 19h00 – 23h00: Most evenings I have functions to attend, If not, then I’m usually having a quiet dinner at home.

CELEB ‘I hate the idea of walking into a room with no one noticing’

Born and raised in KwaZulu-Natal, 21-year-old Minnie had a storybook upbringing as the middle child and only girl of a loving mother and father. ‘We’re a very close-knit family and one day when I decide to get married and have children, I really want a family environment like the one I grew up in,’ she says. It’s hard to believe that it was just over a year ago that she was catapulted to fame when she won the presenter search on the SABC 1 music show, Live. ‘I hate to say it because it’s clichéd, but we really are like family,’ she says of her relationship with co-presenters Bonang Matheba and Sizwe Dhlomo. ‘Siz and B are like my big brother and sister. Sizwe and I always tease each other, and he takes care of me like a big brother. Bonang is your typical big sister – she’ll always ask, “Minnie what are you doing? Are they paying you for this? Why are you going there?” – which is awesome because they know a lot about the industry and are protective of me.’ That sounds fine and dandy, but what about the rumours of a rivalry between herself and Bonang? She flippantly brushes those off. ‘People just wanted a Rihanna and Beyoncé situation,’ she says. ‘It makes for interesting headlines, I guess. We’re very close. If I’m having a bad day she’ll SMS to see if I’m okay; if she travels overseas she’ll always bring me a gift. She’s refined, graceful and elegant; I’m still growing and I’m rough around the edges,’ she adds, bursting into laughter. ‘She hasn’t set a foot wrong in her career so it’s great to have her as a reference.’

The photo shoot gets under way. The clothing suits and fits her so well that it could have come straight out of her closet. Well, theoretically it does – as the Face of LEGIT, Minnie made the final call on every outfit designed for her range. ‘It captures a lot of who I am right now,’ she says. ‘I’m young and fun-loving and I wanted it to reflect that. I’m picky about what I attach my name to, but I’m thrilled with all the garments.’ With a new initiative that gives someone the chance to win a bursary to study fashion design through LEGIT, Minnie is determined to make a difference; ‘It’s all about making my mark as the Face of LEGIT,’ she says. ‘I want my legacy to live on, and to be the LEGIT girl everyone remembers. There was a stage when there wasn’t enough money for me to go to university, so I know what an opportunity like this means. Later I got the chance to study further, and I can’t wait to give that opportunity to someone else.’ As I watch her pose for her shots one word comes to mind. Effortless. Turns out the infinitely photogenic Ms Dlamini has quite a bit of pageant experience. ‘I grew up watching Miss SA, Miss World and Miss Universe,’ she smiles, ‘and that world always appealed to me.’ She won her first pageant at 12, and a string of other wins followed. I wonder if beauty pageants are still relevant in today’s society…? ‘Oh definitely,’ Minnie says without hesitation. ‘Pageants teach young women about poise, elegance, discipline and camaraderie, which are skills that play a role in other aspects of your life.’ Clearly. Just look at her! Minenhle Dlamini is a name we’ll remember, long after the photographer shouts, ‘That’s a wrap!’

EARTHY-HUED BASICS – THIS DRESS IS A WARDROBE MUSTHAVE

This year’s Cape Town Fashion Week was by far the most exciting one to date, with a stellar line-up of designers. Each one lucky enough to be invited to show at this event really stepped it up a notch – they all delivered on-trend but wearable garments with a touch of local flavour. My favourite ranges were from Tart, Lalesso and Nucleus, for their zesty, youthful edge and spirit of fun and freedom. All in all, the event offered the perfect scouting ground for top local talent. Could we expect to see designer threads at LEGIT soon? Hmm… you’ll be the first to know if it happens…
