Insurance is there to make life easier for you in difficult times, when you’ve lost a loved one or valuable possessions

ut o b a h t u tr e h T

E

ver had something valuable stolen or destroyed? Or lost someone you love in a car accident or through illness? In the worst cases, losing a loved one or a valuable possession can leave you distressed, and even homeless and without food to eat. And that’s where insurance comes into the picture. It gives you money at a time when you really need it. It won’t make you feel better about losing a loved one, but it can make things easier for you by helping to pay for the funeral, or replacing stolen goods like your TV or cellphone, which you need on a daily basis.

Why insure? If you don’t have enough money saved if the worst should happen – if you’re unable to work due to an accident or disability, or your fridge breaks and needs to be fixed – opt for insurance. Finding the correct insurance plan for your needs means that you are covered in the event of an emergency – making your small monthly payments well worth the expense.

2

You can insure everything from material possessions like your car or TV, to your health and life. For example, models insure their bodies, so that if anything happens and they can’t work, they will still receive some money.

What can’t you insure? Anyone or anything with no direct relationship to your financial situation. So you can’t buy insurance that will pay you if your neighbour dies or a friend’s television is stolen.

image shutterstock

Can you afford insurance? You must pay on time and in full each month, or your insurance won’t be valid. No payment means no cover. Your insurance cover will only start again once you start paying your monthly payments. Always make sure you can afford the insurance you are taking out on a long-term basis.

Insurance gives you money when you really need it

What can be insured?

INSIDER tips

1

If your car is very old, you don’t need ‘comprehensive’ insurance – opt for third-party insurance or fire and theft cover instead.

2

Take out life insurance if you owe money on your house and have others who depend on you.

The do’s and don’ts of cover Good habits to grow, and common mistakes to avoid DON’T sign without understanding Before signing for an insurance plan, make sure that you have read through the full terms, exclusions and ways to claim. If there’s anything you don’t understand, don’t feel shy to ask as many questions as you need to. Be sure that you understand all the details of your particular plan.

DON’T be dishonest about your details Always answer all insurance questions truthfully. Never provide the wrong information when signing a policy or claiming from one, as this is fraudulent and could lead to criminal prosecution and no payout on your claim.

DON’T skip payments When it comes to your monthly premiums, be sure never to miss making a payment. With most plans, no payment means no cover. For example, if you skip a payment and your cellphone gets stolen, you won’t be paid out. Your insurance cover will only start again once your payments are up to date again.

DON’T cover only yourself if you are the breadwinner When you have dependants, the costs involved can be overwhelming. If you insure yourself and your family (partner, children, parents and other family members), your insurance plan can take a financial load off your shoulders.

4

DO keep your paperwork in order Always keep record of your policy wordings in a safe place. Get into the habit of filing away the contracts you have signed so that you know where to find them if ever you need to claim.

DO lower your risks Be on the lookout to find ways of lowering your risks of claiming. For example, install burglar bars in your home and take care not to misplace your cellphone.

image shutterstock

DO review your policy documents regularly Be sure to update your details if and when they change. A birth, marriage or divorce means you need to update your coverage, so sit down with a broker or salesperson to assess your new insurance needs.

The paperwork:

questions to ask

It’s very important to understand the following:

1

4

2

5

What will this pay for? Know what you are buying, and when it will start to work in your favour.

When won’t this pay? Ask the salesperson about any exceptions, which are also called exclusions (things your insurance will not pay for) and waiting periods.

3

How soon am I covered? Many types of insurance have a waiting period, during which you cannot claim. This is usually a couple of months, starting from the date you buy the insurance plan or policy.

6

How much will it pay? Ask what the amount is that you are covered for, and what you or your family can expect to receive if you need to claim. Who am I buying this insurance from? Are you dealing with a reputable company? Who does the agent work for? Always ensure that you are comfortable with the provider.

6

Who is behind this insurance? Ask who will pay out if you claim. A large company has sufficient money to guarantee insurance.

Knowledge is power, so ask as many questions as you need to Some insurers offer both life and short-term cover, while other insurance companies offer just one or the other. (Call the Financial Services Board on 0800 202 087 or 0800 110 443, toll-free, to check whether a company is registered to sell you insurance.)

7 image shutterstock

Who will benefit? Make sure you know who will receive the money. Hint: Nominate a ‘beneficiary’ for life insurance, or your money won’t automatically go to your loved ones.

8

What are the rules of the insurance plan? Sometimes you can do things that make your insurance invalid should you die because of the activity, for example if you do illegal motorbike racing at great speeds, insurance won’t pay out.

Why funeral plans are vital The real cost of a funeral is more than most families can afford – but with a funeral policy, a dignified send-off for your loved one is well within reach

10

W

hile no one likes to consider their funeral or that of a loved one, planning ahead can bring real peace of mind. Funerals have many expenses associated with them, such as funeral parlour costs, transport for the body, cemetery and tombstone-related costs, flowers, food, a family car and a bus for mourners. These costs add up to quite a considerable amount. This is why a funeral plan makes sense: you pay a small monthly premium to save up for the funeral costs when the time comes that you need it.

ways to make appliance insurance work for you

Protect yourself from the high cost of repairing appliances by choosing Jet’s Appliance Maintenance Plan A Home Appliance Maintenance Plan is a smart way of lifting the burden of being a homeowner. When your washing machine breaks, your fridge stops working or your entertainment unit breaks down, repairing these

19

Jet financial seRvices appliance maintenance insurance

appliances can cost a lot of money – but with a Maintenance Plan, you don’t have to face big repair bills for your major appliances. Here are a few tips to make the most of your plan.

1

Insure the big stuff Work out the value of all your appliances and list them, starting with the most expensive and ending with the least expensive. For example, is your TV/entertainment unit worth 5 00000 and your fridge worth 4 00000? And you’ve just spent money on a washing machine and dishwasher? With high-end items like that, you need appliance maintenance cover, but it’s pointless paying 2000 a month to cover a 15000 DVD player.

2

Read the important facts The Jet Appliance Maintenance Plan will repair up to seven nominated home appliances, including your TV, VCR, DVD player, home theatre system, fridge, freezer, washing machine, dishwasher, tumble dryer, microwave oven, stove, plasma TV sets and rear-projection units. Your cover includes free house calls and collections, provided you live 50 km or less from the service provider. Make sure you are within the correct area and that the appliances you need covered are included before signing.

3

Lower your risks Find ways of doing quick and easy preventative maintenance on your big appliances. For example, once a month, run an empty hot water wash to break down any built-up residue in your washing machine. Something as simple as that can extend the life of your appliances.

Now I have00 to pay 12 000 !”

I recently received a call from a firm of attorneys claiming that they were acting on behalf of a furniture store and that I owed them about 12 00000. When I advised them that I have no idea what they are talking about, they said that I opened an account at this store about a year and a half ago in Johannesburg (when I live in Port Elizabeth). When I asked for proof that I owe this money, the attorney sent through statements showing a signature that is not mine, as well as a copy of my driver’s license (which I lost together with my wallet about two years ago). I really don’t know what to do anymore – the attorney will not listen to me and they are now saying that if I don’t make an arrangement to pay, they will take judgment against me. Because Mr Radebe has a plan with Jet Legal, he was able to phone the helpline straight away, where he was given top legal advice from an experienced attorney. He was informed of his rights and which steps he should follow. Mr Radebe was relieved because he had someone that he could count on for reliable legal advice. Mr Radebe was a victim of ID theft, a form of fraud, where someone assumed his identity and used his name and ID number to access resources and/or obtain credit that Mr Radebe would be responsible for paying.

“My account was

fully paid up” With the Jet Account Protection Plan, you can get up to 24 00000 cover for as little as 033 per 10000 owing

I was permanently employed at a car-wash, but retrenched by my employer last year when it closed down. I have two young children and I’m a single mother. The payout money really helped me. The monthly charge was worth it – it cost me very little. I was very happy with the process when doing the claims. I went to my nearest Jet store and explained the situation to them. They told me to bring a retrenchment letter, my ID and payslip. They paid my account shortly after the claim. I’m still looking for work, so the claim money to cover my account expenses really helped. – Thandi Sejake* *Name and image changed to protect privacy

The Jet Family Provider Plan ensures that your family has a monthly income for a year after your death

47 47

Jet financial seRvices family provider plan

One of the most cost-effective ways to protect your family’s income should you pass on, Jet’s Family Provider Plan can help you take care of their basic needs when you’re not there to do so. Your family can use their monthly payouts to make sure that there’s food on the table, that warm clothes can be bought come winter-time, and that school fees can be paid for a year.

Q

I heard life insurance costs a fortune. Can I afford to take out a Family Provider Plan? The Jet Family Provider Plan is designed to be affordable. For 3100 a month, you can make sure that your partner and children will be paid out up to 18 00000 over 12 months. This way, they will have money every month for a year.

Q

I’m married but have no kids – will this policy still benefit me? If you are the breadwinner in the family, this plan will ensure that your partner is still taken care of. Rather than providing a lump sum, it pays out a monthly income to your partner – giving them enough time to get back on their feet financially.

Q

What is the payout amount per month? There are various plan options to choose from, each with its own payout amount. All three plans pay out on a monthly basis for 12 months.

Option 1: 1 650 for 6 00000 cover (50000 payout a month)* Option 2: 2350 for 12 00000 cover (1 00000 payout a month)* Option 3: 3100 for 18 00000 cover (1 50000 payout a month)*

Q

What happens if I skip a monthly payment?

A|

Different terms apply to the different insurance plans. In the case of Cellphone, Appliance Maintenance and Jet Home Protect plans, no payment means no cover. For example, if you skip a payment and your cellphone gets stolen, you won’t be paid out. Your insurance cover will only resume once you start paying your monthly premiums. With the life insurance-related plans, there is a grace period of 30 days, which means if you can’t make a payment, you’ll get an extra month to pay the premium. If you still don’t make the payment within the grace period of 30 days, your policy will lapse (be invalid) and you will not be covered. Your insurance cover will start again once your payments are up to date.
