I

felt that as 2012 draws to a close it was a good time of year to summarise some of the current trends in antiques and discuss which items are selling well and some of those which are not.

G

enerally speaking it has been a good year for auction rooms mainly because salerooms primarily sell to a client base with disposable income who tend not to be the people who suffer most when recession hits.

It is true that many traditional antiques of mediocre quality are not selling well but this is because they have gone out of fashion rather than because of the recession. Brown furniture is of course the classic example, with items now making a fraction of the prices which they would have reached twenty years ago. At present people are favouring lighter coloured woods and more modern styles, causing a huge loss in revenue for all salerooms which traditionally relied on the furniture section to be their major source of revenue . Now of course would be an ideal time to buy antique furniture and if I could fit any more into my house I would definitely choose this as my pet retirement plan.

S

alerooms have had to adapt to this and at Smiths we have increased our specialist sales in areas of the market which are performing well. For example we now have twice yearly sales for Coins and Militaria which are areas of the market which are currently booming.

O

ther areas of the market which are also performing well include vintage and antique textiles and clothing and most of our sales now have a small but popular textiles section. Postcards are also popular as an interesting and convenient collectable whilst we have seen an increase in the value of taxidermy and anything to do with hunting – a backlash I think against the recent ban.

T

he silver and jewellery sections have now become the work horse of many salerooms with the rise in precious metal prices causing the whole market to rise up out of the doldrums seen prior to the recession. Once again fashion also plays a role, with chunkier pieces and costume jewellery from the Victorian period onwards becoming increasingly desirable andcollectable.

T

raditional antiques which are performing poorly include longcase clocks, copper and brass, Victorian watercolours, engravings and etchings and as a general rule ceramics. Running against these general trends is (as always) anything of outstanding quality which will always command a top price.

T

here are also particular items which for specific reasons hold or increase their value such as Royal Worcester - now that the factory has sadly closed. Bizarrely the present cupcake trend has also meant that pretty antique tea ware has started to rise in value - I don’t think anybody could have predicted that! Chinese items are also selling extremely well as their economy continues to boom and a variety of small collectables are also thriving.

M

y conclusion then for the end of 2012 is to take note of the market, ask your local reputable auctioneer for advice when thinking of buying and selling in 2013 and of course have a Happy Christmas and New Year.

1. A VICTORIAN MOON PHASE LONGCASE CLOCK seems reasonable at £600 2. A ROYAL WORCESTER LARGE VASE sold well at £3,600 illustrating the current interest in this factory 3. AN OLD POSTCARD ALBUM made £80 illustrating the current popularity in this interesting niche market 4. A NOSTALGIC GROUP OF WADE AND ERTLE NODDY FIGURES sold for a surprising £60

’Tis the season to be jolly! Yes, it’s that time of year again. The festive period is a time of celebration and cheer, yet it can also cause undue stress and strife. So if you are feeling frazzled just thinking about Christmas, here are some simple ideas to help get you through the next few weeks.

TOP 5 SHOPPING TIPS 1. Before you even leave the house, make a list. This cannot be stressed enough as it guarantees you won’t buy unnecessary items and you won’t spend more than you can afford. Write down exactly who you need to buy Christmas gifts for and who you will be sending Christmas cards to this year. If possible, write down what gifts you intend to get people or write down what you have bought for them as you go along so you know exactly what you have bought. Make sure you cross people off the list when their gifts have been bought. 2. Make a budget and stick to it. It’s easy to get carried away when you are rushing around and you are also more likely to grab the first thing you see just to escape the inevitable crowds. The shops are full of Christmas offers, so make the most of the bargains and get shopping early. If you are struggling financially, perhaps older family members and friends can agree to do a Secret Santa and arrange a maximum spend for gifts. As tempting as it may seem when times are hard, avoid pay day loans and putting everything on credit cards. It’s easy to forget about what you owe until you are faced with a big bill in January and if you can’t afford to pay everything back straight away, then it’s a false economy, as you only end up spending more than you did originally. 3. Even if you’ve never thought about it before, consider shopping online. Many items can be bought at heavily discounted prices in comparison to the high street. Amazon and eBay are just two of the best reputable websites around that offer a wide range of products and reasonable delivery charges. When buying online, always allow enough time for delivery and take into account the possibility of snow fall at this time of year. Serious weather conditions can cause severe disruptions and delays to the postal service. If you are posting gifts overseas, check the last dates for postage at the post office as the middle of December is the time limit for many countries. Buy plenty of wrapping paper, gift labels and sellotape with a dispenser and if you don’t have a good scissors already, add it to the list. These are just some of the items that tend to disappear when you most need them. A supply of various size batteries for toys is essential to prevent any tears on Christmas morning! 4. Set aside an evening for writing Christmas cards and wrapping presents. This can actually take hours, so if you plan to do it at a certain time, then you will avoid rushing and feeling stressed. It may sound obvious, but label presents with gift tags straightaway to avoid any confusion and embarrassment later on! 5. Christmastime means family time. Maybe you can’t agree on what to watch on telly or you need to keep the kids quiet for a few hours or simply want to celebrate the magic of Christmas, then how about one of these festive films that are guaranteed to be enjoyed by all ages.

Christmastime means family time. Maybe you can’t agree on what to watch on telly or you need to keep the kids quiet for a few hours or simply want to celebrate the magic of Christmas, then how about one of these festive films that are guaranteed to be enjoyed by all ages.

Top 5 Christmas Films 1. It’s A Wonderful Life – A heart-warming inspirational classic that sees a despairing George Bailey (played by James Stewart) discover the value of life with the aid of angel Clarence (Henry Travers), who arrives on Christmas Eve to show George what life would have been like had he never existed. 2. Home Alone – Hilarity ensues when Kevin McAllister (played by child star Macaulay Culkin) battles to fend off two bungling robbers (Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern) after he is accidentally forgotten at home by his family in their frantic rush to the airport for their Christmas holiday. 3. The Santa Clause – A cynical divorced father (Tim Allen) accidentally kills Kris Kringle and reluctantly inherits the role, which ultimately strengthens his relationship with his young son. 4. Elf – Will Ferrell captures the innocence of Buddy the Elf perfectly as he leaves the North Pole to find his biological father and keep him off Santa’s naughty list. 5. Miracle On 34th Street – Whether it’s the 1947 or 1994 version, the story of Father Christmas (Edmund Gwenn/Richard Attenborough) being put on trial to determine if he is legally sane will make even the most hardened viewer a true believer. Once you have done all your shopping, sent off the Christmas cards and wrapped all the presents, why not put your feet up, enjoy a mince pie and a glass of mulled wine and embrace the madness with some classic festive tunes!

Top 5 Christmas Songs 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

TREAT YOURSELF……. Why not give your Oven a spruce up Fiction

‘The House of Silk’

‘The Casual Vacancy’

When Barry Fairbrother dies unexpectedly in his early forties, the little town of Pagford is left in shock. Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war. Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils…Pagford is not what it first seems. And the empty seat left by Barry on the parish council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity and unexpected revelations? Blackly comic, thought-provoking and constantly surprising, The Casual Vacancy is J.K. Rowling’s first novel for adults.

‘Dare to Dream’ Join the UK’s hottest new boyband on their rollercoaster ride to superstardom, with the follow-up to the Number 1 bestselling book One Direction: Forever Young: Our Official X Factor Story. In 2010 they were just five normal boys, who didn’t even know each other, dreaming of being up on stage, with fans screaming their names...so much has happened for One Direction since then! Following their huge success on The X Factor, and the hysteria they caused wherever they went on The X Factor tour, One Direction are quickly becoming the UK’s biggest boyband, and the pop act that everyone wants to meet. And this is just the beginning...After storming the UK charts in 2011, 2012 looks set to be the year One Direction go global! Here, in their own official book, Harry, Niall, Zayn, Liam and Louis each tell the story of their amazing journeys in full - from teen hopefuls auditioning for The X Factor to pop superstars in the making, and now to living their dreams out. And the boys are so grateful to their fans for getting them there, they want to give you all an exclusive peek inside their world...Stunningly designed and jam packed full of exclusive unseen photos of the band on and off stage, plus private captured moments, the incredible story of One Direction’s rise to fame is a must-have for any true fan.

THE GAME’S AFOOT ...It is November 1890 and London is gripped by a merciless winter. Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson are enjoying tea by the fire when an agitated gentleman arrives unannounced at 221b Baker Street. He begs Holmes for help, telling the unnerving story of a scar-faced man with piercing eyes who has stalked him in recent weeks. Intrigued, Holmes and Watson find themselves swiftly drawn into a series of puzzling and sinister events, stretching from the gas-lit streets of London to the teeming criminal underworld of Boston and the mysterious ‘House of Silk’ ...

‘Rod: The Autobiography’

Now is the time to start getting ready for that special Christmas roast dinner. Cleaning ovens is a job that nobody likes to do. The system that Ovenclean uses is 100 per cent caustic free and ensures a safe, hygienic and fume-free environment meaning appliances are safe to use as soon as the cleaning job is complete. Ovenclean can remove grease, fat and burnt on carbon deposits in around two hours from all ovens, hobs, microwaves, and Agas. The long-awaited autobiography of one of rock’s true megastars. Rod Stewart (aka Rod The Mod and to a very select few, Dad) was born the working-class son of a Scottish plumber in North London. He was never, as some stories later had it, a professional footballer or a gravedigger, though he did become a bit of a singer and a fairly good one at that. Rod started out in the early 1960s, playing alongside acts like “The Rolling Stones”, before his distinctively raspy voice and natural onstage presence caught the eye of the iconic guitarist, Jeff Beck. An often-interesting two year stint with Beck’s group paved the way into the angst-inducing (for the world’s hoteliers) five years with the Faces, whose offstage antics with alcohol, hotel rooms and groupies have become the stuff of legend. And during all this, he found a spare moment to write “Maggie May”, among a few others, and launch a solo career that has seen him sell in excess of 200 million records, be inducted into the Hall of Fame twice, and play the world’s largest ever concert. Not bad, as he says, for a bloke with a frog in his throat. And then, there is his not so private life: marriages, divorces and affairs with some of the world’s most beautiful women - Bond girls, movie stars and supermodels - a struggle with steroid dependency, and a brush with cancer which very nearly saw it all slip away. Rod’s is an incredible life, and here, thrillingly and for the first time, he tells the whole thing,

leaving no knickers under the bed. Joyously entertaining and at times deeply moving, this is the remarkable story of a guy with one hell of a voice - and one hell of a head of hair.

Its all shaking and a bit stirred at ...

Hopes Ash Farm…. A

pple harvest is in the bag (or trailer one might say) this year’s apple harvest is not one I will look back at fondly even with rose coloured glasses fully in place. Pollination back in the spring hadn’t been that bad so there were quite a few apples, however, the lack of sunshine meant the apples themselves were very small. The apples are all for cider so are not hand harvested but are shaken from the trees and then swept from the ground by the harvester. Driving the harvester in the muddy conditions felt like I’d gone up another level of difficulty on a computer game. The tractor is attached to the harvester which is then attached to a trailer; this combination can be a bit of handful in good going. My mission; to avoid crashing into the trees but getting close enough to pick up all the fallen fruit whilst all the time sliding around in the mud and receiving intermittent phone calls from The reactor cow has been dethe MD (My Dad) saying I hadn’t picked up enough stroyed and we’re back to testing apples for the next load. every cow on the farm (depending on the time of year between 200 and 300 animals) every 60 days until we are clear. Our 15 year battle with TB has decimated our cow numbers. We are a “closed herd” which means all our cattle are born and bred on the farm, nothing is bought in. We’re not buying TB in, in already infected animals. TB is coming to us from untested/untreated wildlife. We are losing cows to TB quicker than we can breed replacements, hence the drop in numbers. TB costs us dearly both financially and emotionally. Understandably the suggested cull of wildlife is unpalatable but surely so is the destruction of thousands of cattle together with many farmers’ livelihoods. The Reception Class from Lea School are regular visitors to the orchard. After watching the machinery do its thing they have a wonderful time shaking trees, picking apples and throwing them into the trailers. It’s definitely a hard hat area when they’re in town “THE FARMERS’ CHANDLER’ and their teacher’s risk assessment is getting longer and longer each year. It’s quite refreshto see the FARM EQUIPMENT ing harvest through PARTS & their eyes; after all ACCESSORIES DEALER apple harvesting is fun, fun, fun!

Another TB test, another reactor.

Since December 2009 we have milked the cows robotically. Despite seeing the robots in action everyday I still think they are pretty fantastic bits of kit. One of my concerns on going robotic was whether I would become isolated from the cows. In reality the reverse has been the case. Each cow has a transponder round her neck which tells the robot who she is when coming into be milked. The transponder also collects data throughout the day such as how much she’s eaten, whether she’s digesting her food correctly, whether she’s moving about enough, if she’s losing weight, gaining weight not to mention the vast array of data regarding how much milk she’s producing, milk quality …. the list goes on. The result is I now have a much clearer picture of each cow as an individual and therefore can treat her as such each. The only hic-cup that sticks in my mind was during the first couple of weeks when Number 88, maybe as a tribute to the late Michael Jackson,

managed to moonwalk into the robot backwards. The transponder was obviously at the wrong end as far as the robot was concerned and flummoxed opened the gate for this unknown interloper to exit. However, the nimbleness that had enabled Number 88 to enter backwards deserted her and she became well and truly wedged. Fact: When stressed cows poo a lot! After much pushing, shoving and pooing Number 88 was extricated and thankfully has not repeated this manoeuvre.

Wishing everyone a very happy Christmas and a drier new year!

Craig Drew, fresh from retaining his American rally championship codriving title, teamed up with rising star Arron Newby to take top local honours in the Teg Sport/Pirelli backed Subaru Impreza N11, for the recent SA Gas Premier Rally, organised by Dukeries Motor Club. The event offered 6 stages held entirely in Clipstone Forest with no road mileage, the service area was located within the forestry complex, for the maximum entry of 60 cars.

Newby got off to a bad start on the opening test, in the slippery conditions, with an unscheduled trip into a ditch, damaging the steering and loosing over 30 seconds. With the car returned to tip top condition they set top three stage times over the next three stages to lie 4th overall going into stage 5, but disaster struck when they broke a bottom arm and had to limp through the stage. A good run on the final test saw them actually tie on total times with event sponsors Karl/Guy Simmons, with the latter quickest on first stage. They took 4th with Newby/Drew taking 5th and 1st Group N car home. Drew's season ends with a trip to Canada for the Tall Pines Rally with rising Canadian star Mason Moyle. Bob Morgan with Adrian Williams on the notes in the Winner Garage Subaru Impreza had a trouble free day, apart from a few overshoots to take 6th overall on one of their favourite events. The second Winner Garage Impreza driven by Jason Morgan had Sarah Williams alongside they too had a good free day apart from a few spins and stalls to finish 19th overall. "We had an awesome day, it's been a good year for me, I have learned a lot and not marked the car, which is always a bonus", said Jason Regulations will soon be available for the 2013 Team GMF Wyedean Forest Rally, which will take place on Saturday 11th February. It will follow its usual format with stages in the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley, from its Chepstow Racecourse base. Forest of Dean Motor Club have also agreed a new 3 year deal with GMF Motor Factors, they will now sponsor the event up until 2015, which will be the 40th anniversary of the ever popular rally. "We are absolutely delighted to have agreed a new deal with GMF, it's very important for the event to have title sponsor and it's excellent news that a local company will sponsor the rally when we celebrate the 40th Wyedean in 2015", said Motor Club Chairman Paul Willetts For all details go to fodmc.co.uk.

in wet conditions. This is when a layer of water on the road causes the wheels to lose their grip.

Who should buy Winter Tyres?

Many drivers believe that because we rarely see snow in the UK, that Winter tyres are a waste of money. Not only have the last 2 years proved this to be wrong, but on average UK temperatures range from 32°C to -15°C and it is unreasonable to expect one tyre to cope with such diverse conditions and temperatures.

What are Winter tyres?

Winter or cold weather tyres are ideal for snow, ice, rain and even just colder temperatures, they are not just for snow as some drivers believe. They are made from a special silica rubber compound, which is designed for temperatures under 7°C and it doesn’t harden as quickly as conventional tyres. The harder the tyre the less likely it is to grip loose or slippery surfaces. Winter tyres usually have a deeper tread than standard Summer tyres and a unique pattern, which is designed to increase grip on wet and slippery roads.

What do Winter Tyres do?

These tyres are made to adapt better to colder temperatures and wet conditions, giving better traction on slippery surfaces. This reduces the chance of skidding and losing control of the car in bad conditions. They can also help to reduce the stopping distance, which can be up to 10 times longer in icy conditions. They help to reduce the chance of aquaplaning

Specialise in high quality used cars without a high price tag! All cars HPI Clear, have Long MOT & 3 Months Warranty Mostly Low Mileage, One Owner vehicles with a Large Diesel Selection

Colder temperatures affect the performance of normal tyres. When the temperature drops below 7°C the rubber on normal tyres hardens, giving the tyres less grip and less ability to adapt to contours in the road and between October and March temperatures below 7°C are quite usual. Although Winter tyres do mean extra cost, it is worth bearing in mind that each mile travelled on your Winter tyres is a mile saved on your standard tyres and the increased benefits of winter tyres could save both time and money, not to mention giving greater safety on the roads.

When should you fit winter tyres?

Ideally they could be fitted from October to March, but this will depend greatly on the weather, as although they can be used at all times of the year they can become soft on hot

days.

Do I need to buy tyres for all 4 wheels?

Fitting less than 4 tyres could cause problems, as it may mean that one or more of your tyres grips the road better and this will make it harder for you to control your vehicle, increasing the risk of skidding.

Where do I buy winter tyres?

These are more readily available than they used to be and your local tyre specialist should be able to help you with purchasing and fitting.

stability programme) ABS (anti-lock braking system) and BAS ( brake assist system) as standard. So much for the technical side of the Velostar, what is it like to use, we used it for about 80 miles over all types of road and became very enamoured with it, the engine is so quiet and smooth that when idling in traffic one has to keep looking at the rev counter to make sure that it is running.

N

o problem for the Veloster that is, this is a very versatile Sports Coupe that will easily take your little ones to school or your mother to the shops. This unique car is made for the man with a little boy in his head but the responsibility of a family in his house. I imagine that we have all yearned for a sports car at some time in our lives but because they were not practical we couldn’t. The Velostar was on sale in the UK from 5th January 2012 and it is available in two derivatives, Velostar and Velostar Sport, the “Sport” has the option of an additional Media Pack or red leather interior. Standard features of the Velostar include 17 inch alloy wheels, a 7 inch TFT touch screen media centre, Bluetooth connectivity with voice recognition, climate control air conditioning, reversing sensors, front and rear fog lights, and striking LED daytime running lights. The Velostar also features a stereo RDS radio/CD player with MP3/WMA compatibility and an iPOD connection, with ability to operate all functions using controls on the leather clad steering wheel for added convenience. All versions of Velostar in the UK are powered by a 140 PS 1.6 litre GDI petrol engine. This all aluminium DOHC Gamma unit delivers improved fuel economy and reduced emissions, plus long term durability and excellent NVH levels, similar to a multi-point fuel-injected engine. To maximise fuel economy, reduce emissions and enhance refinement, every Velostar comes with a six speed transmission. Standard equipment is a maintenance free manual gearbox, filled with low viscosity oil and fitted with a high sixth ratio to minimise engine revolutions.

The Velostar is full of all the bells and whistles that you will ever need, and to a fairly old fashioned sort of guy the “Bluetooth” arrangement, which is part of the Sat-Nav is truly fantastic, like magic! The car almost follows your thoughts about where you want to go, it is so responsive, the brakes work very well and the radio is good, you can also put a memory stick in and have an endless supply of tunes. The two doors on the near side turn the Velostar into a real practical machine to take mum or children out for the day and the boot is quite large, my advice is if you like something a little out of the ordinary go and look at this unusual but practical car. A little technical: Price, at Stirling £17000, less £1000 so from Stirling you pay £16000 Also available on a PCP scheme. Comes with a 5 year triple care. 5 year warranty, 5 year roadside assistance and 5 years of vehicle health checks. “Our” car had Hyundai’s first dual clutch transmission. This six speed unit offers drivers all the advantages of a fully automatic gearbox together with the engaging characteristics of a responsive manual when “manual mode” is selected for clutchless sequential gear changes. Good King Wenceslas looked out, On the Feast of Stephen, When the snow lay round about, Deep and crisp and even; Brightly shone the moon that night, Though the frost was cruel When a poor man came in sight, Stamping out a message:

Suddenly the snow began to fall heavily and the first letter N soon disappeared, leaving the word SOWING. King Wenceslas rubbed out another letter of the word in the snow and it again left a word. He carried on taking out one letter at a time which left other, smaller words. He did this until there was only one letter left - and this was a word too!

Which words did King Wenceslas make and what was his final word?

o ©traderp Can you give these very special youngsters a loving home just in time for Christmas? Bailey is a 2 year old Labrador x.

He is a big boy and a very strong dog, with a wonderful character. He enjoys long country walks, playing with toys and food!!. He loves the company of other dogs and adores his human friends. He would not be suitable to live with very small children but would make a fabulous family pet. Poor Bailey has been in kennels for quite some time now, he would love a family of his own in time for Christmas

Ruby and Ollie are 2 young lurchers around

9 mths old, they originally came into the kennels seperately as strays but soon palled up and are now inseperable. They did find a home briefly together but circumstances changed and they are now back in kennels. They are young active dogs, do need some training, as they can be naughty as puppies are. They are great fun though and just need a home to call their own If you can give Bailey or Ruby & Ollie a great home this Christmas please contact HWAR on 01568 760033, but please remember when you take on any animal they are for life and not just for Christmas

T

he Twelve Days of Christmas have been celebrated traditionally since medieval times and begin the day after Christmas which is now celebrated as Boxing Day and ends on the Twelfth Night which falls on 5th January. The Twelve Days of Christmas start after Christmas as Christmas day is considered holy and not meant for frolicking. With the advent of the 16th century some Scandinavian and European cultures celebrated the Twelve Days of Christmas with other festivals heralding the New Year. The festivities were seen as a way to drive away evil spirits and the beginning of a new year.

W T

hich are the Dates of the Twelve Days of Christmas?

he Twelve Days of Christmas include the last six days after Christmas (26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31 December) and the first six days of January, the New Year (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 January). The Twelve Days of Christmas are the days following the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ to the day of Epiphany falling on 6th January when Christ’s glory was manifested. In England the Twelve Days of Christmas are celebrated with dancing, feasting and merrymaking.

34

W T

hy is it called Twelve Days of Christmas?

he Twelve Days of Christmas is called as it took the Three Wise Men , twelve days to find infant Jesus. Centuries later, the twelfth day has been celebrated as the Feast of Epiphany in Western Church. In some cultures such as Latin American and Hispanic culture , 6th January or the twelfth day is observed as the Day of the Kings or Three Kings Day. The day is often celebrated by giving gifts as ascribed to the three gifts that were presented to baby Jesus by the Magi or three Wise Men. In some cultures Christmas gifts are given on all the Twelve Days of Christmas.

W

hat are the Traditional Celebrations during the Twelve Days of Christmas?

D

uring the Twelve Days of Christmas, people would visit neighbors and friends and enjoy a meal of minced pie and other Christmas goodies. It was a festive tradition to keep the Yule log alight for the entire period of Twelve Days of Christmas. The celebrations undertaken during the Twelve Days of Christmas

was anticipated with much joy by the workers and all work on the land virtually came to a standstill during that period. The first Monday after the Twelfth Day was known as Plough Monday as it signaled the peasants and farm workers to return to their work on the fields.

W

hat is the significance of the Song Twelve Days of Christmas ?

T

he carol, Twelve Days of Christmas is generally seen as a simple song for children. However some see it as a song of Christian teachings. The song dates back to the religious wars that took place in 16th century England and are seen as a song referring to the basic teachings of Christianity. For instance the words True Love refers to Jesus, Turtle Doves represent the Old and New Testaments while French Hens indicate the Theological Virtues of Faith, Hope and Charity. Similarly Calling Birds represent the Four Gospels while the Golden Rings represent the initial Five Books contained in the Old Testament which chronicles the fall of man and so on.

“This gorgeous seasonal bouquet is a lovely way to send good wishes to make someone’s day.” Says Heather Gorringe from The Great British Florist. “The bouquet is big enough to fill a 2 pint jug and is packed with whatever looks best in our floristry on the day.” A bouquet makes a lovely gift whatever the reason, and they are a particular favourite to send for Birthdays and anniversaries. Wiggly Wigglers, has just launched the Great British Florist website - www.greatbritishflorist.co.uk. A traditional florist just on-line and just using British grown flowers. They are giving one lucky Trader Post reader the chance to win one of their British bouquets just by entering our free draw. The bouquet can be delivered to any UK mainland address. It could be a member of your family, friend, work colleague or even yourself. “Our florists use only flowers grown on British farms, including our own here in Blakemere, Herefordshire.” said Heather. “British flowers are grown here and not flown here which means that the average flower miles saved by our bouquets equates to over 90% less, compared with those using flowers grown abroad. It also gives a boost to the British farming economy as well as food and habitat for a huge range of butterflies and bugs, birds and bees.” To enter the free Trader Post Draw with a chance to win a bouquet worth £45 from the Great British Florist, go to www.greatbritishflorist.co.uk/trader-post To enter by post, please send your name, address, telephone number and email address to: Trader Post Bouquet Draw, Penyard House Weston under Penyard, Ross-on-Wye HR9 7YH

What A Boy Wants For Christmas Darren remembers accompanying his father out shopping in the toy department of Hamleys one Christmas Eve.

Winter Warmer Chilli hot chocolate with American style cinnamon pancake Finally a hot chocolate that is good enough for royalty. Do not be put off by the chilli as it is not overpowering. It is more for warmth. Ingredients 2 pints of semi skimmed milk 2 table spoons of cornflour 3 table spoons of icing sugar 4 table spoons of good quality organic cocoa 100 g of quality dark chocolate (70% cocoa solids) – finely grated Pinch of sea salt One chilli (add as much chilli as you like, a little bit at a time, dependant on personal taste)

Dad said, ‘What a marvellous train set. I’ll buy it.’ The girl behind the counter looked pleased and murmured, ‘Great, I’m sure your son will really love it.’ Dad replied with a glint in his eye, ‘Maybe you’re right. In that case I’ll take two.’

Top Tip: Check the strength of the chilli. It is easily done, nip the pointed end of the chilli and dab on the end of your tongue. You should be able to determine how much you will need to use. Method Pour the milk into a pan and bring to simmer. Add the other ingredients into a bowl (except the chilli) and give it a good stir. Pour the mix into the simmering milk and whisk until there are no lumps. Gradually add the chilli and keep tasting to see how much you would like Allow to simmer for a minute while stirring Then pour into your mug or a bowl and use for dipping.

American Pancakes Ingredients 300ml milk 225g self-raising flour 100g melted butter 2 large eggs Teaspoon of baking powder

ay lTobobe.r.!.! nC Te New W w rO Design you

Method Break the eggs into a bowl Add the milk and a pinch of salt and whisk together Then add the flour and whisk well until all lumps are removed Add the baking powder to the mix and continue to whisk Add the melted butter and continue to whisk Allow the batter to rest for at least 30 minutes and form air bubbles

for

Holidays Stag & Hen Parties Corporates Schools & Colleges

To cook the pancakes Put a frying pan over heat Add a knob of butter and wait until melted Add the mixture to the pan slowly Gently spread the mixture to cover the face of the frying pan The mixture will begin to produce air bubbles – this is a sign that it beginning to cook. When it bubbles on the outside of the pancake this means it is ready to be flipped. Just check with a spatula that the pancake is golden brown first, and if it is, flip it over and cook for two to three minutes until brown. Take the pancake out of the pan and allow to cool. Cut into strips and sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon. Serve

Serving suggestions

I would serve the two together on a cold winter’s night such as Christmas Eve, sitting around a fire. Nothing says Christmas more than a sharing plate like this on a cold wintry night.

What A Girl Wants For Christmas The Santa Claus at the shopping mall was very surprised when a Emily, young lady aged about 20 years old walked up and sat on his lap. Now, we all know that Santa doesn’t usually take requests from adults, but she smiled very nicely at him, so he asked her, ‘What do you want for Christmas?’ ‘Something for my mother, please,’ replied Emily sweetly. ‘Something for your mother? Well, that’s very loving and thoughtful of you,’ smiled Santa. ‘What do would you like me to bring her?’ Without turning a hair Emily answered quickly, ‘A son-in-law.’
