TPA help keep Nottingham’s new tramline on-track

Mammoet Rail Tramline Installation

TPA has once again been called upon by Mammoet, the world’s leading crane supplier. Under this particular Network Rail project, Mammoet provided State-of-the-art ‘Thunderbirds elevator’ style transporters which safely drove a new bridge over TPA’s heavy aluminium panels. T: 0870 240 2381

Five TPA Crews worked through the night from 9pm until mid morning the following day to install over 320 panels on the lay, wait and recover installation. This technically demanding installation was project managed by TPA’s Project Manager, Pat Hendley with installation support from TPA Field Sales Engineer, Oliver Dennis. Measuring 46 metres (in length) and weighing 640 tonnes, the new steel Lenton Lane Bridge, is the second of five impressive structures to be installed by Taylor Woodrow Alstom, as part of the Nottingham Express Transit (NET) extension to Chilwell via the QMC and Beeston and Clifton via Wilford.

Over a period of four months, the bridge was constructed in a site compound at the nearby Lenton Lane Industrial Estate. It was then ready to be driven into position using four 40-wheel vehicles called Self Propelled Modular Transporters (SPMTs). The SPMTs drove the bridge across the railway and lifted it up onto concrete supports either side of the tracks. Trains were suspended while this work was carried out at the Lenton South Junction of the railway. The drive-in installation was carefully planned to coincide with scheduled Network Rail engineering works between Derby and Nottingham to minimise disruption to rail passengers.
