Greeting families, we hope you had a fantastic summer filled with shared laughter, relaxing days, and joyful memories being made with your family. Summer is such a wonderful time for little ones to explore, learn and develop new skills. These early years in our children’s lives pass as quickly as our Canadian summers, that’s why it is so important to take advantage of them! The start of September brings the beginning of the new school year, what an exciting time for our young ones! Attending school can be an excellent opportunity for children to make new friends, and create independence. However, for some children back to school can be experienced differently, and it is not uncommon for many children to show signs of stress and separation anxiety. Here are a few tips to help you and your child through back to school: 1. Be consistent – Routines can be important for our children to succeed. Ensure your children gets enough sleep with a proper bedtime routine and try to take care of school preparations the night before to alleviate the early morning chaos. With routines, children can learn what to expect, allowing them to feel more in control of their situation. 2. Be honest- Actively listening to what your child is telling you, will enable them to share their feelings and encourage you to be open about sharing your own. When children see and hear us expressing our emotions, they are more likely to so the same.
3.Be Open- Keep communication flowing between your children’s teachers, bus drivers, and other supports. Let them know your child’s concerns and what behaviours to observe. When children see us trusting in these individuals, they too will be more willing to share and communicate with them. If you would like more information or support, please stop by our offices or consider registering for a Triple P and Kids Have Stress TOO classes.
