“A Playground of Opportunity”

Message from the Mayor WELCOME TO FOX CREEK!

As the Mayor of Fox Creek I encourage you to browse through the information, check out what our community has to offer and experience why our motto is “A Playground of Opportunity”. Our residents have chosen to settle in Fox Creek primarily for the quality of life.

Fox Creek is a vibrant community of approximately 2000 people located two and a half hours northwest of Edmonton on Highway 43. The Town acts as a strong service centre for the active oil and gas industry surrounding the community.

In October 2013 Municipal Election, the residents of Fox Creek elected a strong, dynamic Council that is truly committed to sustaining and enhancing our present lifestyle through planned and controlled community development. Recent years have seen a greater diversity of local shops, businesses, and enterprises which have enhanced the economic base and contributed to the growing spirit of the Town. Fox Creek is open for Business; our constant challenge is to continue to find new ways to maximize the potential for our growing Town. The future hold endless possibilities for Fox Creek; we are committed to staying focused.

We are well established in the area of quality of life services. Fox Creek comes with highly respected Medical Doctors, Ambulance Service and a Fire Department that rivals those around the world in their skills, including larger urban centres. Out RCMP Detachment consists of a group of dedicated officers who take pride in their work and provide a safe community to live in.

Fox Creek, surrounded by beautiful forests, offers a vast variety of top notch outdoor activities. The Town is well known for our quading, hunting, fishing, ice fishing, incredibly groomed snowmobile trails and cross country skiing. Take a trip out to one of our two lakes located just minutes from the Town to enjoy a day with the family at the beach, a picnic by the water, day use camping areas, perfect for any summer event, two very well taken care of campgrounds that offer private sites and free firewood, boat docks and the opportunity for many water sports.

Add to that, a full complement of recreation facilities; the scenic 9-Hole Silver Birch Gold Course with grass greens and a clubhouse that offers great food, men’s and ladies night and is host to many weekend tournaments. Tennis courts and baseball diamonds that come alive every June for our annual Slo-pitch Tournament and regular season adult league. In 2018 the doors to our new Multi-Use Facility will be opening and will provide the community with a multitude of fun activities including: a new indoor pool, hot tub, sauna, lazy river, lane swim, along with a new arena that will have plenty of bleacher space and a restaurant / lounge so fans can sit, relax and enjoy watching a good game of hockey. There is a 4 sheet curling club that offers a men’s league, ladies league, mixed and junior leagues. Fox Creek has a well-equipped fitness centre, a paved walking trail and the Don Nicholson Natural Walking Trail; enjoyment for all ages!

I invite you to enjoy the tremendous natural beauty and the generous hospitality that Fox Creek has to offer. Our door is always open - let us show you the great opportunities and potential that there are in Fox Creek!

History of Fox Creek

“Information supplied by Iosegun Reflections - A History of Fox Creek” With the official opening of Highway 43, Fox Creek started in a pretty quiet way as just a highway service station stop. Road grading began in 1953 with gravel surfacing being completed in 1956. Paving between Whitecourt & Valleyview finished in 1961. By 1965 the community grew to over 900 residents, There was a strong hope that the Town would continue its growth with the discovery of the huge natural gas reserves at Kaybob and the proposed developments of the reserves.

It was obvious that with the anticipated influx of permanent residents that there would be a necessity for planned and orderly development. Meetings were held which included representatives of the various operating companies, and several departments of the Provincial Government. The Government chaired the meetings and gathered information with respects to the ultimate size and requirements of the community.

The Government worked quickly and on July 19, 1967 by Order in Council the New Town of Fox Creek was incorporated. Action was taken under the New Town’s Act to appoint a three-man Board of Administrators. The Board assisted in solving many of the problems confronting new and growing communities. Money to pay for essential services that may be borrowed directly from the Provincial Government General Reserve Fund were immediately available to provide for facilities which were urgently required and proper supervision led to a careful and planned rather than haphazard growth. The Town layout was established and arrangements were made for provisions required by the town such as roads, water, fire protection, etc. Naturally there was a definite Government control over allocations and expenditures of the funds but it did save possible delay in the handling of matters under their jurisdiction.

With the consistent discovery of more and more gas reserves, the original plan of a quite a small town is a thing of the past. What was once known as just a highway service station stop that had just 900 residents in 1965 grew to just under 2000 residents in 2016.

Fox Creek continues to have significant and steady growth. Housing construction has been going on since 1967, but consistent growth is not only due to the fact that there are more and more houses being built for new residents, but it also due to the fact that there are more businesses moving into the industrial section of Fox Creek to provide support to the Oil & Gas industry.

It is not just oil and gas that supports the Town however, in 1956 Mostowich Lumber moved to Fox Creek and was sold years later to Millar Western. In 2010 a rebuild of the Fox Creek sawmill was announced, after a devastating fire. The Millar Western Sawmill cost $45.8 million to rebuild and now the mill produces 117 million board fee per year. The mill located just 5 minutes south of the Town of Fox Creek.

Wastewater System The Town operates and maintains the Water Treatment Facility along with the retention pond also know as Oasis Park. Our main source of water comes from wells surrounding the community and our waste water goes into the lagoons to the north of Town. Some of the lagoon water is purchased by Shell and used in oil extraction.

Recycling The Town is a part of the Alberta Recycling program and is dedicated to helping reduce landfill and maintain a green footprint in our small community. The entire community works hard to achieve this through recycling and reducing the amount of waste that can end up in the municipal landfills. In town we have one (1) Thrift Store that is funded by the Friends of the Fox Creek Hospital Society. It is open one Saturday a month an on a rare occasion, once during the week. The bottle depot is constantly busy with sorting of bottles from the community. The depot is run by Kim Kennedy, a community member, who puts in long hours to help keep our environment as clean and friendly as possible.

Community Garden Our first community garden was completed a couple of years ago. To help reserve the town’s water supply, we have placed numerous water barrels around the grounds filled with non-potable water to water the 35 pots.
