Parks & Recreation Demonstrates Excellence through Accreditation

Since 2012 the Erie Parks & Recreation Department has been Nationally Accredited through the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA). Every five years the Department must demonstrate compliance of standards to renew the accreditation. Examples of compliance range from Strategic Plans to Purchasing Policies, from Land Acquisition Plans to Volunteer Management Guidelines, and much, much more. While becoming Nationally Accredited is a difficult, tedious process, it serves as a valuable measure of the Department’s overall quality of operation, management, and service to the community. Further, National Accreditation demonstrates that Erie meets the standards of best practice in the delivery of Parks & Recreation services. It holds the Department accountable to the public ensuring responsiveness to meet community needs, increases credibility, and enhances staff teamwork and pride! 2

The Parks & Recreation Department

builds community through the delivery of exceptional parks, open spaces, trails, facilities, programs and services.

Youth Sports RECREATIONAL SPORTS PHILOSOPHY

RECREATIONAL SPORTS AGE CLASSIFICATIONS

Erie Parks & Recreation strives to provide a positive, safe, and fun environment to allow children of all skill levels the opportunity to play. We hope to create an environment that balances teamwork, commitment, hard work, sportsmanship and competition. We provide 2-3 contacts per week with enthusiastic parent volunteer coaches, and hope that at the conclusion of the season your child learned about the game, improved skills, and wants to play again.

For a majority of our leagues, we classify our league offerings by age. Unless otherwise noted in each program/league’s description, the age calculation date for all youth sports programs/leagues will be calculated by the first league contact day. • The “U” before the age number stands for “under” (e.g., U9 stands for ages under 9). • The “U” after the age number stands for “and under” (e.g., 9U stands for ages 9 and under).

Our Policy COMPETITIVE SPORTS SPORTS // ERIECO.GOV/PARKSANDREC

It is against Erie Parks & Recreation Youth Sports Leagues policy for players to concurrently participate in/on any same sport competitive league/team during any part of our respective recreational sports season. By registering and participating in any of our youth sports leagues, you acknowledge that you and the participant are abiding by this policy. With that said, we understand that Erie Parks & Recreation sports leagues do not fit everyone’s needs. We have compiled the following list of local organizations if you are looking for a more competitive offering for your child. This list is not all-inclusive and is intended to provide a few options to begin your research.

Pickleball Drop-In Guidelines

The purpose of the drop-in program is to provide the opportunity for ALL residents to play during peak times. It is required that players take turns to allow everyone to play. We encourage players to meet new people, introduce themselves, and mix up play when possible. This also allows any level of mixed level play on open courts. Drop-in Guidelines - When players ARE waiting to play and courts are full. 1. Four players will play a game to eleven points and then vacate the court they just played. 2. Four new players will then use the vacated court and continue the process. 3. Players waiting are suggested to line up paddles in a group of four, to determine who is next to play. 4. All players waiting to play should be ready to enter courts as a group. 5. Please remember to ask for permission if passing through another court being used and thank the players while passing. 6. Players waiting must be allowed to rotate in and please be courteous. Additional pickleball information available online at erieco.gov/pickleball

Parks & Recreation

Get Your Trees Ready For Winter Wrap the trunk. To prevent bark damage from sunscald and frost cracks, wrap the trunks of younger trees up to the first branches using commercial tree wrap. Leave the wrap on until early April. Mulch the base. Apply 2 to 4 inches of mulch near the base of the tree, but not against it, to reduce soil evaporation, improve water absorption and insulate against temperature extremes. Recycle leaves. Instead of disposing of autumn leaves, consider layering them around the base of each tree as mulch, or blend them into the yard with a mulching mower to retain nutrients. Continue to water when there is no rain. Use about 10-15 gallons of water per inch of trunk diameter, apply water slowly so it has time to soak in.

PROGRAM GUIDE // ERIECO.GOV/PARKSANDREC

Wait to prune, unless there’s recent tree damage. Late winter is the best time for pruning most tree species, but it can be done whenever trees are dormant.
