The Department will go for it’s SECOND re-accreditation this summer! Since 2012 the Erie Parks & Recreation Department has been Nationally Accredited through the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA). Every five years the Department must demonstrate compliance of standards to renew the accreditation. Examples of compliance range from Strategic Plans to Purchasing Policies, from Land Acquisition Plans to Volunteer Management Guidelines, and much, much more. While becoming Nationally Accredited is a difficult, tedious process, it serves as a valuable measure of the Department’s overall quality of operation, management, and service to the community. Further, National Accreditation demonstrates that Erie meets the standards of best practice in the delivery of Parks & Recreation services. It holds the Department accountable to the public ensuring responsiveness to meet community needs, increases credibility, and enhances staff teamwork and pride! 2
The Parks & Recreation Department
builds community through the delivery of exceptional parks, open spaces, trails, facilities, programs and services.

Youth Sports RECREATIONAL SPORTS PHILOSOPHY
RECREATIONAL SPORTS AGE CLASSIFICATIONS
Erie Parks & Recreation strives to provide a positive, safe, and fun environment to allow children of all skill levels the opportunity to play. We hope to create an environment that balances teamwork, commitment, hard work, sportsmanship, and competition. We provide 2-3 contacts per week with enthusiastic parent volunteer coaches, and hope that at the conclusion of the season your child learned about the game, improved skills, and wants to play again.
For a majority of our leagues, we classify our league offerings by age. Unless otherwise noted in each program/league’s description, the age calculation date for all youth sports programs/leagues will be calculated by the first league contact day. • The “U” before the age number stands for “under” (e.g., U9 stands for ages under 9). • The “U” after the age number stands for “and under” (e.g., 9U stands for ages 9 and under).
Our Policy COMPETITIVE SPORTS SPORTS // ERIECO.GOV/PARKSANDREC
It is against Erie Parks & Recreation Youth Sports Leagues policy for players to concurrently participate in/on any same sport competitive league/team during any part of our respective recreational sports season. By registering and participating in any of our youth sports leagues, you acknowledge that you and the participant are abiding by this policy. With that said, we understand that Erie Parks & Recreation sports leagues do not fit everyone’s needs. We have compiled the following list of local organizations if you are looking for a more competitive offering for your child. This list is not all-inclusive and is intended to provide a few options to begin your research.

Emerald Ash Borer - EAB

Parks & Recreation
The Facts
- EAB was found in Erie in 2021. - As of 2022, EAB is pressumed present in low levels throughout Erie. EAB populations will exponentially increase in Erie until all Ash trees are either dead or protected with a pesticide. - Now is the appropriate time for residents to MAKE A PLAN for their Ash trees.
Step 1 - Inventory your trees Survey the tree species on your property and in the public Right-ofWay adjacent to your property. Do you have any Ash trees? Emerald Ash Borer only kills Ash trees. Step 2 - Evaluate your Ash trees Mature, healthy Ash trees growing in a good location with plenty of room to grow are good candidates for preservation. Unhealthy Ash trees growing in confined areas without room to mature are not good candidates for preservation.

Step 3 - Chemical Treatment Pesticides can prevent EAB from killing valuable ash trees. EAB pesticides must be reapplied every 1-3 years based on specific manufacturer’s recommendations. The most effective pesticides must be applied by licensed pesticide applicators and are most effective when applied prior to a particular tree becoming infested. As early EAB detection can be difficult, now is the appropriate time to begin preventative EAB treatments in the Town of Erie. Step 4 - Plan for Removal Untreated Ash trees will be killed by EAB. Get tree removal estimates from local licensed Arborists and budget for this future expense. Step 5- Plant diversity! Species and age diversity are the keys to a resilient urban forest. Please consider replacing unhealthy Ash trees with diverse species to ensure the health of Erie’s future tree canopy.
More information and resources to help with each step can be found at erieco.gov/EAB.

Schofield Farm Open Space is located at 2203 North 111th Street in Erie, west of Arapahoe Ridge and south of Flatiron Meadows. The farm is under the Town’s ownership and maintained by the Parks & Recreation Department. It comprises of 75 acres total; 35 acres of Erie Lake and 40 acres of the Schofield Farm. This remaining 40 acres was once a larger property of approximately 320 acres of land purchased originally by Hiram Prince from the Union Pacific Railroad between the years of 1889-1891.
On February 21, 1892, Hiram and Mary’s daughter, Mollie “Mary” M. Prince married Alphonso Schofield and in 1893 Hiram deeded 96 acres to Mary and Alphonso. The main house was constructed sometime between 1893 and 1896. The era of Schofield as a working farm continued well into the 2000’s and purchased by the Town of Erie in 2014, with a portion of the farm is still used for agricultural purposes. In 2016, the Schofield Master Plan was completed, outlining the potential future community uses that Schofield Farm could offer. Since then, staff have been working behind the scenes to return Schofield Farm and its buildings back to their original state. In 2019, the Town received a grant from the State Historical Fund (SHF) to conduct a Historic Structures Assessment and in 2020, it was completed for all six historic structures on the site. This assessment paved the path for the Town to begin developing a phasing plan for the rehabilitation of the buildings. In 2020, the Town received another grant from the SHF to develop construction documents for drainage and utilities, completing those drawings in 2021. With plans in place, the Town is ready to begin the physical rehabilitation of the site, beginning with the original house. In fall of 2021, the Town received additional funding from SHF for design and engineering documents, along with construction, to rehabilitate the farm house back its original state from the late 1800s. Construction documents are currently being created and construction will follow. Anticipated completion of rehabilitation of the house is scheduled for summer of 2023.
