Special Events
Committed to Fun: Special Events
PROGRAM GUIDE // ERIECO.GOV/PARKSANDREC
The Erie Community Center’s special events have been no stranger to having to adapt and adjust their community activities and have strived to find modifications or new programs. From a virtual Erie Community Center pool egg hunt to Drive-In movies, Erie Parks and Recreation is finding ways to keep the community engaged and most importantly safe. Being involved with our community is a passion here at the Erie Community Center, always striving to find new and improved ways of celebrating our wonderful town and its citizens. Brandon Grasmick, Assistant Coordinator Special Events, said his goal was to find unique, fun ways to keep morale high during COVID and worked to provide these opportunities for Erie. One of our first events that had to be amended due to the COVID-19 virus was the Underwater Easter Egg Hunt. Being unable to participate in the event, a virtual egg hunt was sent out on social media and was emailed to registered participants. On June 13th, Brandon offered a virtual Family Health & Fitness through Facebook Live with over 700 views. To replace our Movies in the Park, a Drive-In theater was set up at the Erie Community Center and for the Fourth of
10
July, porch party kits could be purchased that included decorations, activities, and more! Whatever the event, Erie strived to keep connecting the community to fun, with new and fresh ideas. Not only was there excellent participation numbers but the positive feedback has been tremendous. Our Health and Fitness day received not only over seven hundred views but compliments and comments like “Excellent morning starter-Thank you!” “Great information,” and “Great demo.” The Drive-In movies sold out within the first 24 hours and received kind words of gratitude. “Sweet idea! Thanks Erie Parks & Recreation!” and “It was a great way to have a community event while staying socially distant.” are only a few of the wonderful responses that Erie Parks and Recreation received. The compassion for the community was a tremendous highlight during unprecedented times. The numbers of participation and positive feedback was an amazing experience. Thank you for being a part of this wonderful town and making these events shine Erie!

Fitness & Wellness
Committed to Health: Circuit Challenges While the Erie Community Center was closed temporarily due to the COVID-19 virus, the Parks & Recreation Department sought out different ways to bring fitness and exercise to the community. Circuit challenges were a way to keep the community engaged while providing a safe way for individuals to stay physically active with designed workouts from our Fitness Coordinator, Shondra Frogge.
FITNESS & WELLNESS // ERIECO.GOV/PARKSANDREC
Circuit challenges, were printed onto signs and placed at parks and trails throughout the Town of Erie. The circuits rotated throughout different parks and trails every so often and include challenges such as pushups, squats, and more.
14
The circuit challenges were well received by the community. Staff received calls with gratitude and appreciation for the circuit challenges in their community. “Thank you for putting up the challenge course in Longs Peak Park, the entire neighborhood was using it and having fun and I just wanted to let the Community Center know how much neighbors appreciated it. Wendy Merrell said in a call to Guest Services. It was amazing to see the popularity of the circuit challenges and people using them every day to get out of the house and stay active.

Sports
Youth Sports RECREATIONAL SPORTS PHILOSOPHY
RECREATIONAL SPORTS AGE CLASSIFICATIONS
Erie Parks & Recreation strives to provide a positive, safe, and fun environment to allow children of all skill levels the opportunity to play. We hope to create an environment that balances teamwork, commitment, hard work, sportsmanship and competition. We provide 2-3 contacts per week with enthusiastic parent volunteer coaches, and hope that at the conclusion of the season your child learned about the game, improved skills, and wants to play again.
For a majority of our leagues, we classify our league offerings by age. Unless otherwise noted in each program/league’s description, the age calculation date for all youth sports programs/leagues will be calculated by the first league contact day. • The “U” before the age number stands for “under” (e.g., U9 stands for ages under 9). • The “U” after the age number stands for “and under” (e.g., 9U stands for ages 9 and under).
Our Policy COMPETITIVE SPORTS SPORTS // ERIECO.GOV/PARKSANDREC
If an intermediate division is available, any competitive player must register for that division. A competitive player is defined as any player practicing or playing with a competitive league or tournament team. By registering and participating in our youth sports leagues, you acknowledge that you and the participant are abiding by this policy. With that said, we understand that Erie Parks & Recreation sports leagues do not fit everyone’s needs. We have compiled the following list of local organizations if you are looking for a more competitive offering for your child. This list is not all-inclusive and is intended to provide a few options to begin your research.

Committed to Connection: Zoom Monday Coffee Talks “I look forward to Mondays,” and, “I feel very blessed,” are only a few of the compliments and gratitude vocalized during Cindy Hickman’s Zoom Coffee Talk on Mondays. During the time of the Stay At Home orders, which resulted in the temporary closure of the Erie Community Center, Cindy Hickman - Active Adults Coordinator started Zoom Coffee Talk meetings to stay connected to her Active Adults as well as keep them connected to the community through updates, virtual programming like meditation, and daily life happenings. The Coffee Talk mornings were filled with great communication, laughter and positivity for all. Attending one of the Monday morning Coffee Talks was certainly a highlight! It was enlightening to see the engagement in conversation from how well everyone’s gardens were doing, to arts and crafts being completed, and couples celebrating 50+ years of marriage. It was motivational to hear of daily adventures from biking outdoors, thirty minute daily walks, and weight loss goals being accomplished. Hearing all of the accomplishments, no matter how big or small, certainly put a light to the pandemic, as everyone seemed to be making the best of their situation.
Research studies have shown a strong correlation between social interactions and health and well-being among adults and have suggested that social isolation may have significant adverse effects. The benefits of an active social life include but are not limited to, increased physical health, boosted immune system, more positive outlook on life, improved mental sharpness, and an overall longer, happier life. Cindy putting together the coffee talks has not only made this point and case but has shown how truly important having an active social life is. It was wonderful to see the positivity that the coffee talks have brought out. “I love seeing everybody.” “It’s so good to see all of you guys.” There was no hidden appreciation, everyone during the talk shared ample amounts of gratitude for the updates and virtual meetings. There are not enough words to properly describe how wonderful the weekly coffee talk felt, it was truly amazing and shined true to a quote “When life gives you a hundred reasons to break down and cry, show life that you have a thousand reasons to smile and laugh.”-unknown.
