Our mission is to build community through the delivery of exceptional parks, open spaces, trails, facilities, programs and services.
Some of the new tools and technology include:
Rainbird Central Control System: Allows staff to manage their irrigation clocks remotely (cell phone or computer) without having to physically be at the park. This allows them to make real time changes in response to shifts in weather and moisture events.
Flow sensors and master valves at every park: these help prevent water waste by identifying if water is flowing when there is no programmed irrigation activity, and in some cases do not allow water to flow in a main line if there is no programmed irrigation activity.
Over the past 2 years, Parks Supervisor John Frankenfeld has spearheaded a project focused on installing and utilizing a variety of new water saving technology available for the irrigation industry.
Rain sensors at every park: designed to shut off irrigation systems if moisture is detected when the system is running.
A new weather station at Erie Community Park Ballfields: this will allow staff to view real time weather data closer to the specific Erie microclimates.
• Our goal is that by utilizing these tools, we will be able to reduce our irrigation water use by up to 30% a year.
• It is important to note that these are great tools to be used by our parks technicians to help manage water, but there is no true replacement for the tech’s in-depth knowledge of the intricacies of the specific parks under their watch!

Erie Parks & Recreation strives to provide a positive, safe, and fun environment to allow children of all skill levels the opportunity to play. We hope to create an environment that balances teamwork, commitment, hard work, sportsmanship and competition. We provide 2-3 contacts per week with enthusiastic parent volunteer coaches, and hope that at the conclusion of the season your child learned about the game, improved skills, and wants to play again.
For a majority of our leagues, we classify our league offerings by age. Unless otherwise noted in each program/league’s description, the age calculation date for all youth sports programs/leagues will be calculated by the first league contact day.
• The “U” before the age number stands for “under” (e.g., U9 stands for ages under 9).
• The “U” after the age number stands for “and under” (e.g., 9U stands for ages 9 and under).
It is against Erie Parks & Recreation Youth Sports Leagues policy for players to concurrently participate in/on any same sport competitive league/team during any part of our respective recreational sports season. By registering and participating in any of our youth sports leagues, you acknowledge that you and the participant are abiding by this policy.
With that said, we understand that Erie Parks & Recreation sports leagues do not fit everyone’s needs. We have compiled the following list of local organizations if you are looking for a more competitive offering for your child. This list is not all-inclusive and is intended to provide a few options to begin your research.

See a leaking sprinkler in our parks or along the trails?
Deep and infrequent watering encourages deeper rooting in clay soils and protects against losing water to run off. This is often referred to as a “cycle and soak” watering schedule.

Did

you can probe your lawn with a screwdriver or other probing object to see if it’s in need of water? If it goes into the soil easily, this area has a good level of moisture, if it doesn’t, this area likely needs to have more water applied.
• Get a FREE irrigation consultation through Resource Central
• Install a rain sensor or smart irrigation control clock to help ensure your irrigation system is running only when needed.*
• Adjust your watering schedule to only water twice a week.
• Review the settings on your irrigation controller to ensure that there are no hidden programs running.
• Use high-efficiency rotary nozzles for spray zones.*
• Improve your soil quality by adding compost to your landscape. This will help your plants to absorb more water and can reduce outdoor watering by up to 25%. Compost can be added as a top dressing on your existing lawn.
• Aerate your lawn annually. This allows water to reach the roots instead of running off the surface.
*The Town of Erie offers rebates to help with these upgrades! Visit erieco.gov/1813 to learn more.
Our turf replacement rebate program may help. If you have an upcoming lawn project looking to install water efficient gardens or grass, you might qualify. Landscaping project options include replacing your lawn with waterwise gardens or low water use grasses and you can design your new low-water use landscape project yourself or work with a landscape professional. If your project covers at least 200sqft of maintained irrigated turf grass with low/ no water wise plantings, you qualify!
When stormwater hits the ground and begins to flow through our community, it can gather pollutants that affect our local rivers and streams. Allowing these pollutants to flow untreated can have a BIG impact on our local water supply (think drinking water, swimming pools…even fishing areas).
Good Housekeeping
• Keep outdoor areas free from trash, dirt, litter, and debris.
• Keep dumpsters and recycle lids closed.
• Ensure containers are free from spills and leaks.
• Do not place liquids in dumpster unless they are contained.
