2021 ALLEN COUNTY FAIR BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Brad Core, President

Doug Hilty, Vice President

Brook Stepleton, Treasurer

Welcome to the 2021 Allen County Fair

The Board of Directors and Staff of the Allen County Fair would like to formally invite you to the 171st Allen County Fair. The Governor has lifted the health orders and most Ohio fairs are returning to normal fairs like we all enjoyed in 2019. The Allen County Fair is no exception. We will be having a full traditional fair that is open to everyone. The Board and Staff have been working very hard to prepare for the 2021 Allen County Fair.

The highlight of the fair will be the showcase of youth projects and the competitions that these young people engage in during the week of the fair. The Brad Paisley Concert is sure to be an event to remember as well. The 2021 Allen County Fair will also be packed full of free entertainment all over the grounds and a whole host of food vendors that will be preparing all the favorites.

On another note, the Board of Directors is currently seeking a new Fair Manager. If you know of anyone that you believe would excel in that area, please have them contact Ohio Means Jobs, Allen County Office for more information. We hope to have a new Fair Manager in place shortly following the fair to focus on preparation for the 2022 Allen County Fair. In the meantime, the Staff and Board of Directors are fulfilling the duties of that position.

In closing, I would like to thank the members of the Allen County Agricultural Society for electing me to serve on the Board of Directors a little over 2.5 years ago. Serving on the Board has been an enjoyable experience. I would also like to thank the membership for supporting the transformation of the Board of Directors over the past 2 years. This transformation has been very positive, in my opinion, and has lead to a Board that is open to discuss change that is needed to ensure the continued success of the Allen County Fair for years to come. I would also like to thank the Board of Directors for having confidence in my leadership and thus electing me to serve as President of the Allen County Agricultural Society this year.

I hope to see everyone at the 2021 Allen County Fair!

Sincerely,

2

Fair Magazine DedicaTion

This year’s Fair Magazine is dedicated to two of our Allen County Fair Vendors, Helms Cane Rack for almost 70 years at the fair and Strickland’s Funnel Cakes for over 40 years at the fair. Congratulations!

Helms cane rack

Cane racks are definitely one of the oldest games at a county fair and The Helms Cane Rack has been a staple at the Allen County Fair, dating all the way back to 1951. When the Allen County Fair was brought here from Delphos to the current location, Darrell’s parents, James and Treva Helms, rented the grounds for their cane stand. That stand and location is still used by the Helms Family today. You can’t miss the location as it is located where the midway splits, near the Farm Bureau Tent on the fairgrounds. James retired in 1981 and Darrell and Judy Helms took over and operated the cane stand from 1982 till their retirement in 2019. The cane stand is now operated by their sons, Eric and Darren Helms, with help from their sons.

strickland's funnel cakes

Hello friends and family at the Allen County Fair! My name is Buddy Strickland, of Strickland’s Funnel Cakes, which sits next to the Allen County Pork Producers in front of the Grandstand. I came to the Fair in the early 1980’s, and within the many years I have been coming, I have made many friends. (The Metzger Family, the Hoy Family, and the Reed Family), along with many more.

I return to the Allen County Fair because

of being Family orientated, you couldn’t ask for a better place to be. I truly enjoy the 4-H, the auctions, and the kids and their accomplishments. Thank you for having me all these years, and really look forward to many more to come.

Jr. Fairboard president's welcome

Hello!

Welcome to the 2021 Allen County Fair!

I am Cierra Ackerman, your 2021 Jr. Fairboard President! This is our year! I am so excited to continue our outstanding fair, especially after the pandemic. I have been a member of 4-H and have attended the fair for as long as I can remember. The fair and everyone involved, has shaped me to who I am today and I am so thankful for all the opportunities it has brought me. The fair is my family and I am very happy to say so.

Our junior fairboard is composed of some pretty great leaders! 4-H, FFA, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts make up our board. I cannot remember a time throughout the years where hard work and dedication has shown weakness. Each and every member show exuberance and hard work. Throughout this past we have worked together and have combined our skills to help make the fair the amazing place that it is. You can catch us in action at livestock shows,

Junior Fair events, and doing miscellaneous tasks around the fairgrounds.

I am so proud not only of the junior fair board, but each and very person involved with the fair. I am proud to serve the Allen County Fair and I hope you are as well. The Allen County Fair is a great place to be, and you can easily see the pride and dedication in every person. We have a rich tradition here and come from humble circumstances, so let’s keep it up! As your Jr. Fairboard President, I welcome you to the 2021 Allen County Fair! I look forward to seeing each and everyone of you there!

Yours truly, 2021 Jr.

T102 Jr. fair livestock auction

The Allen County T102 Junior Fair Livestock Auction is the highlight of the fair for many Junior Fair Exhibitors. The number of businesses and individuals supporting the Jr. Fair Exhibitors continued to be strong with 585 buyers at the 2020 auction. A gallon of milk, 180 market hogs, 62 steers, 95 lambs, 60 pens of rabbits, 131 pens of chickens, and 60 goats were sold. The tremendous support shown by this group of individuals and businesses resulted in premiums over and above the market price which were a very respectable $330,249.25. This tremendous community support of the Jr. Fair Livestock Auction is sincerely appreciated. Special thanks goes out to The Union Bank Company, Allen County 4-H Council and OSU Extension who clerked the auction, the ring men who donated their time, and fairgrounds staff for their fine efforts in the operation of the auction.

Stop in to the Jr. Fair Office at the Allen County Fairgrounds for information on becoming a buyer, or encourage your junior fair member to exhibit a market animal and become part of the T102 Junior Fair Livestock Auction. Auction dates this year are Thursday, August 26th at 4:30 p.m. for the Rabbits and Chickens and Friday, August 27th at 9:00 a.m. for Goats, Lambs, Llama/Alpaca Fiber, Cow Milk, Goat Milk, Beef, Dairy Beef Steers and Hogs.

We look forward to the continued support from our buyers and anticipate another successful event in 2021.

The Allen County Carcass Show is one of the biggest in the state of Ohio, in terms of carcasses on display. The carcasses are graded and placed for award purposes by The Ohio State University Meat Judging Team.

Harry Shutt, along with his wife Myrna and son Scott, owners of Kewpee Hamburgers, have been instrumental in the growth and excellence of the show. Harry has always referred to the carcass show as the ‘Grand Finale’ of the Fair, an educational opportunity for the exhibitors to see what they have accomplished from their projects this past year.

Join us on Wednesday, September 1st with doors opening at 6:00 pm at Keystone Meats, have a ‘Kewpee’ hot dog and officially close the 2021 Allen County Fair.

project pumpkin

and/or making drawings of their pumpkin for a demonstration, harvesting and more, children and their families will experience first-hand agricultural education.

Cloverbud member families will be given pumpkin seeds and instructions on how to plant them. We chose pumpkins because children will have fun watching this little seed mature into their own personal pumpkin this fall. The families have been encouraged to also proudly display their pumpkin projects at the Allen County Fair in a special display area.

Teaching food production to future generations is a great legacy. By thinking creatively we can start children on the path to agricultural sustainability for future generations.

Our overall goal is that Project Pumpkin is actually a STEM project where we have integrated a variety of activities that ultimately results in new skills being learned. Through learning activities such as planting, caring for the plant, calculating when the plants should be watered, taking photos

The display will also have educational pieces regarding agricultural sustainability and how to get started with their own gardening projects. Both Project Pumpkins and the general public will be educated through this display.

Thank you to our sponsors Rudolph Foods and Furry Tail Farm. Project Pumpkin will be on display all week during the fair in the Youth Exhibits Building. Be sure to stop by and get your picture taken!

white tiger Discovery

This program exhibit has many daily activities such as daily feeding times, keeper conservation talks, and public participation. The public will be able to observe the keepers while feeding and handling the tigers which is an event that guest will not soon forget, and will also further spark the conservation interest in these magnificent animals. Be sure to bring your cameras!

The “ White Tiger Discovery” is a special education and outreach exhibit that features hands on, interactive programs with the Keepers. The conservation and education programs promote and excite people to the many conservation issues involving the last five remaining species of tigers in the wild.

The Royal White Tiger has been extinct from the wild since 1958, but in 2010, India has started a program to re-introduce them back to the wild. The first White Tiger that came to the United States, was in 1960, and was presented to President Eisenhower at the White House (which then went to the National Zoo) as a gift from India. Currently there are just under 60 of these magnificent animals on exhibit in the large scale zoo’s in the United States, and it is believed just over 400 are in captive in the world.

Come see the White Tigers Friday, August 20th through Friday, August 28th daily during the fair at the North end of the fairgrounds, near the Gospel Tent. A small admission fee is required for the show.

wolves of the world

Wolves of the World show presents the mystical enigmatic wolf, a whole pack in fact, performing right before your eyes.

The Sandlofer family explains about the history of wolves. They recount the story of how these rescued wolves are raised in captivity and display the traits of the wolf packs, including the alpha male and female and how they interact. The show even features a hero wolf, who saved a young girl from drowning, showing the wolves to be intelligent, empathetic animals

Sharon has trained the fiercely independent animals to perform before audiences, a feat rarely accomplished in a touring show. Audience members sometimes drive for hours to see the wolves perform live. This is a show unlike any other.

At the conclusion of the show, audience members are invited into the wolves habitat where they actually have the chance to watch the wolves being fed.

demolition derby

Would you allow yourself to be placed into a cement ring where everyone else wants only one thing--to destroy you? Well folks, in the Allen County Fair Demolition Derby, sponsored by 107.5 WZRX, individuals will have the opportunity to do just that. Many entrants begin working on their car or truck a year in advance only to have them destroyed in one short but fun evening at the Fair. Each competitor must customize his or her vehicle

following the strict list of safety regulations for the derby, with the hopes of being the last one standing. So come on out to the Demolition Derby on Friday, August 27th at 7:00 pm in the Grandstand. Don’t miss out on the Kid’s Power Wheels Derby before the Demolition Derby begins that evening. Infield passes are $15.00 for all ages. General Admission tickets are $8.00 for ages 7 & up and children 6 & under are free.

The competition is among the best in Ohio, and each year Allen County’s speed program attracts some of the finest and fastest horses around.

The thrill of seeing the horses compete, the excitement of picking the winner, and the anticipation of cash winnings are all a part of the harness racing program at the Allen County Fair. Fair racing is a great event for people of all ages. But you can’t find out how much you’ll enjoy it unless you come out to the races.

The Dunlap-Renner Memorial Pace will be raced on Monday, August 23rd. The Allen County Supertrot will be raced on Tuesday, August 24th and features races for horses 4 and up. The Ohio Ladies Pace returns again this year and will race on Tuesday. Come out and see what the excitement is all about. Post time is 6:30 pm on Monday and Tuesday nights. Lima Area Concert Band

Drawn together by their passion for music and their love of live performances, a small group of musicians got a band together in 1971 to help celebrate the anniversary of The Lima Mall. They were organized by Gail Wooley, a retired army band conductor who worked at Porter Music Store. Following The Lima Mall performance, members of the band said, “This was fun. Let’s get together again.”

West Ohio Gas provided rehearsal space, and the band quickly grew to more than two dozen musicians. The band was originally referred to as the Million Dollar Band…a reference to the fact that none of the players were paid for their work. In 1972, it was renamed the Lima Area Concert Band. The Lima Area Concert Band now has 70 performers who are all volunteers. They’re people who have grown up playing instruments, and the Lima Area Concert Band gives them a chance to gather with other musicians and share the music they love. The LACB’s musicians come from all walks of life –business people, retirees, students – and they come from all over northwest Ohio.

The Lima Area Concert Band performs in the tradition of John Philip Sousa. Their music is patriotic and pure America and includes the music everybody knows and loves: toe tapping marches, snappy show tunes, pop and big band classics. You’re guaranteed to leave their concerts smiling and humming the music you just heard.

The Lima Area Concert Band performs a

subscription series of four concerts at the Civic Center every year from May to September. The band also performs a number of free concerts throughout the area every summer. Their music makes us a popular headline act for local festivals. You’ll see the Lima Area Concert Band at the Star Spangled Spectacular, the Summer Moon Festival at the Neil Armstrong Museum, Concerts in the Park, and many other places.

LACB conductor John Hill, graduated with Music Education Degree from Bowling Green State University in 1969. He taught instrumental music in Indian Lake Schools from 1969-1973 and taught Instrumental Music in Riverside (DeGraff, Ohio) Schools from 1973-1975. John played trumpet in the Lima Symphony Orchestra for over 5 years and was a solo trumpeter with LACB for about 5 years. John has also worked in Music and Activity Therapy at Lima State Hospital, Oakwood Forensic Center and Oakwood Correctional Facility for more than 30 years and he has also worked as a Mental Health Tech at Lutheran Social Services and Coleman Professional Services for over 10 years. John has been the Associate Conductor and Conductor of the Lima Area Concert Band for over 30 years. The Lima Area Concert Band will be performing a free concert on Friday, August 20th at 7:30 pm in the Grandstand.

hall of fame dan kimmet

Dan Kimmet has been the longest serving Director of the Allen County Agricultural Society in its history. Dan served the Allen County Agricultural Society as Director for 40 years from 1981 through 2020. Dan began serving in 1981 taking over for Kenneth L. Muellers position when Kenny moved out of the City of Delphos. Dan served as President of the fairboard from 2005 through 2012, 2014 through 2017 and 2020. He served as Vice President from 1998 through 2004 and 2019.

Dan was a part of many improvements to the fairgrounds during his 40 years. Improvements were made to both campgrounds with installation of water and sewer to the Concession Campgrounds, and a new restroom and shower facilities built near the Livestock Campgrounds. A new Rabbit Barn and Sheep Barn were built on the grounds to help accommodate the increasing numbers in the Junior Fair exhibitors entering in these areas. A loft was added to the Maintenance Building. Air conditioning was added to the Youth Activities and Youth Exhibits Buildings to help promote off season rentals. An addition to the Show Arena, by the Allen County Cattlemen’s, was added to the West end of the Arena. With the construction of the new Walmart on the east side of town, Dan helped with the land trade with Walmart to increase acreage on the fairgrounds. After several years of the Jr. Fair Horse shows being canceled due to weather, the Schmidthorst Pavilion covered arena was built for horse shows during the fair and off season events.

During his 40 years, you could say Dan served on every committee. Some of those were Parade from 1993 through 2008, Harness Racing 1981 through 1987. During his time on the Harness Racing Committee, he started the Super Stake races, the Dunlap-Renner Memorial and Doc Steiner Classic. Dan also served on the Entertainment committee for 8 years and was chairman of that committee for the close to 40 years. He also served on the Building & Grounds, Dairy, Beef and Sheep committees. He also started the daily safety meetings with Past President Jim Stout during the fair. Dan was instrumental in bringing the Petting Zoo to the fair. In the offseason rentals, he helped bring the National Trappers Convention, the Motorcycle Races, the Monster Truck Show, and Max’s Flea

Market and Water Dog Races here to the fairgrounds. During his time as fair director, Dan served on the Ohio Fair Managers Association Board from 2006-2020. He was Director of OFMA in 2006 and was President of OFMA from 2012-2013. He was also a graduate of the Allen Lima Leadership Class in 1997 and a graduate of Leadership Ohio in 2001.

Dan and his family have been active in the fair industry for years and he has passed the love he has for fairs on to his sons. The Allen County Fair would not be one of the best fairs of the state without Dan’s unwavering support over the years.

We are honored to induct Dan into the Hall of Fame for his many years of service to the Allen County Fair and to the Allen County Agricultural Society.

Ernie haase & Signature Sound Triumphant Quartet

Triumphant is the face of quality Gospel Music, Christian integrity, family values, friendship and dedication. The group has been that way since their beginnings in 2003, when the four friends first walked out on to the stage of the Louise Mandrell Theater, in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee as a headlining talent. Each current Triumphant group member was there in that defining moment, and has continued together ever since. Their smooth harmonies, and rich quartet sound quickly gained them national attention, recognition and concert demand. It has also voted them the Fan Favorite Quartet in the Gospel Music field for the last eight years, and each group member also being nominated for and receiving various awards.

Triumphant excels in diversity, and also expands their musical borders to a wide variety of styles, that is enjoyed by church audiences and music lovers. When Triumphant takes the stage, the audience is entertained by the musical variety, the

engaging personalities and a bond that is brought together by years of friendship. Audiences will find themselves smiling, laughing, crying, encouraged and uplifted.
