Memorial Day is a bittersweet day on the calendar. Memorial Day is a day to pay homage to the brave men and women who lost their lives defending the United States. However, over time, Memorial Day has evolved into the uno cial beginning of summer.
As temperatures start to heat up, so, too, do backyard grills. In fact, grilling is an essential component of a good Memorial Day barbecue. ere are many other ways to put your mark on Memorial Day cookouts as well. ese ideas can make your event all the more memorable.
Guests have certain expectations when they arrive at Memorial Day barbecues, and simplicity o en tops the list. A simple playlist of recognizable, popular songs playing in the background, classic yard games like cornhole or horseshoes, sack races or water balloon tosses for the kids, and tasty classic fare on the grill, including burgers, hot dogs and chicken drumsticks, is likely all you need to put smiles on the faces of your guests.
Memorial Day may be the rst big event of the season, and chances are that the grill and yard could use some attention. Make sure all the burners are clean and working properly. Clear clutter from the yard and give patio furniture a thorough cleaning. Add outdoor furniture if you need more seating. Have a spare propane tank on hand so you won’t run out of fuel. If you have a pet, be sure that the yard is cleared of waste.
In addition to cleaning the yard, stock up on citronella candles or insect repellents. Bugs may want to join the festivities, too.
No barbecue is complete without delicious burgers cooking over an open ame. ose burgers can give an extra nod to the Stars and Stripes by showcasing the nation’s well-recognized colors. Place your grilled burger patty on your bun of choice. Top it with raw or grilled tomato slices (red), a slather of mayonnaise or a more dressed up aioli (white), and some blue cheese crumbles (blue). Carry the color theme over into a side salad as well, with your favorite greens topped with beets, blueberries and chunks of feta cheese.
One of the easiest ways to serve a number of people is to put the food out on long tables so that guests can pick and choose what they want. Place condiments and beverages in a separate area to keep the line owing.
Make sure that alcoholic beverages are kept separate from non-alcoholic options so that children do not get into the wrong drinks. Coolers placed on opposite sides of the yard can eliminate confusion.
It doesn’t take much to make Memorial Day barbecues enjoyable. With delicious food and close friends and family in attendance, fun is guaranteed.

Becoming a mother makes you realize you can do almost anything one-handed
On Sunday, May 8, 2022, millions of people will celebrate the special women in their lives, particularly the mothers, grandmothers and stepmothers who often tirelessly care for those they love. Created by Anna Jarvis in the early 20th century and designated an official United States holiday in 1914, Mother’s Day is a special day in many families. Apart from birthdays, primary female caregivers may not always get the recognition they deserve, nor be entitled to a day to kick back and relax and let others take the helm. Mother’s Day entitles them to something special.
• Dine truly “al fresco.” Outdoor dining has become commonplace, and even before it was a safety measure, enjoying a meal on a sun-soaked patio or overlooking a body of water was popular. If you’re worried about limited restaurant space or crowds, plan a picnic at a scenic location, such as a botanical garden or county park. Include Mom’s favorite foods and enjoy the fresh air and delicious foods together.
• Create a photo slideshow. Digital photos have eclipsed prints in many people’s hearts. But too often digital photos never get seen after they’re initially taken. That
can change when you compile a slideshow of favorite photos from childhood and even present-day photos that Mom is sure to appreciate. Use sentimental music or Mom’s favorite songs as the soundtrack, and include some inspirational quotations or personal voiceovers. This is one gift that can be shared in person or over group meeting apps.
• Get involved together. An especially meaningful way to honor a mother who is always giving her time and love is to become involved in a difference-making organization. Joint volunteerism is a great way to spend more time together working toward a worthy goal.
• Enjoy her hobbies and interests. Devote a day or more to trying Mom’s interests and hobbies, whether they include hitting the links, knitting, singing in the church choir, or digging in her garden.
• Send an edible gift. If you can’t be there to celebrate with Mom in person, have a special meal delivered to her door. Then enjoy the same foods with her via Google Meet, Facetime or Zoom. Don’t forget a tasty cocktail so you can toast the special woman in your life.
Mother’s Day celebrations can be unique, heartfelt and customized based on family needs.

GRADUATION IS A MOMENTOUS OCCASION FOR STUDENTS THAT MARKS AN END TO MANY YEARS OF DEDICATION TO STUDIES. Most people look back fondly on the day they received their degrees and diplomas. But o en what is remembered most when a person graduates is the party that commemorated the event. For parents planning graduation parties for their children, graduation season may be lled with nostalgia about their own childhoods and experiences. While parents can borrow from what they learned along the way, graduation parties for their kids should de nitely focus on the here and now — and what is important to the new grad. In fact, the guest of honor should be tapped to help create the party of his or her desires.
Most schools host commencement ceremonies in May or June. With so many people planning parties around the same time, venues and vendors will be snatched up quickly. As soon as you learn the graduation date, reserve a party space and contact caterers, orists, entertainment, or other vendors who will be used for the event.
An open house party enables guests to arrive and depart freely according to their schedules so graduates can hop from one party to the next. is occurs over a long period of time (four to ve hours is a good window) and the party does not follow any strict schedule.
An open house party requires having food and beverages available at all times, so it’s important to have an array of options that can
Even if the party will feature a mix of students, friends and adult family, it may be safer to avoid serving alcohol. is way you do not run the risk of an underage guest sneaking an alcoholic beverage and leaving the party intoxicated. Remember, in some areas you can be legally prosecuted for permitting underage drinking to occur, so it’s best to do whatever it takes to prevent such a scenario.
A theme can make a graduation party even more enjoyable. Tie the theme into the grad’s personality or future plans or go with a classic, such as a Hawaiian luau, which is tting for outdoor events.
One way to enjoy the graduation party is to free up time to mingle. Hiring a wait sta means drink and food service as well as cleanup can be handled by others.
Graduation parties soon will be in full swing. Parents can make their youngsters’ graduation bash more memorable by getting a head start and incorporating a few useful strategies.
