Sainsbury’s and Springboard Opportunity Group raise over £9000

Wiltshire Town Criers Championship at Bowood House & Gardens Saturday 6th August, 1-4.30pm, (normal admission applies)

Following the success of Calne's Town Crier Mark Wylie (pictured below left) at the 2015 Wiltshire Town Criers Championship, this annual spectacle will be hosted in the beautiful setting of Bowood House & Gardens in 2016.

Sainsbury’s Chippenham Stores have supported Springboard Opportunity group over the last year, as their Local Charity Partner. The grand total raised was £9,445.60, £3146 of this came from the profits from the sale of Sainsbury’s 5p carrier bags. Springboard Opportunity group took every opportunity to fundraise at the store on Bath Road, Chippenham throughout the year. This included singing and Makaton signing carols at Christmas and everyone loved the visits by Springboard’s Bouncy and Ruby bears. Springboard manager, Jane Boulton said: “We were delighted to work with Sainsbury’s and the year has been a team effort” Store Manager, Paul Gunter added: “It’s been fantastic year with Springboard. Thank you to all our customers who donated to this very worthy charity. We look forward to staying in touch with Springboard and supporting them in any way we can in the future”. Sainsbury’s stores are at the very heart of the communities they serve. It is not only important to provide great service and quality products, it’s also vital to make a positive difference to communities and to be a good neighbour. Read all about the work of Springboard on page 22. 6

Anna Jacobs

A

NNA JACOBS is the fifth most borrowed author of adult fiction in the UK library system – and she lives in Wiltshire. Well, she spends half the year here, near Royal Wootton Bassett, but lives in Australia the rest of the time.

She’s been busy! Her 75th novel came out in May – in the same week she turned 75. She’s ignoring the idea of retirement. Who wants to retire when you love what you’re doing? She’s also trying to ignore getting older, but that’s a bit harder.

Her recent historical series is set in an old Wiltshire manor house called Greyladies at the beginning of the 20th century. Her modern Peppercorn series is set in an imaginary town ‘near’ Swindon and there’s a third modern story queuing up on the ‘back burner of her brain’ waiting to be written. Anna deeply regrets needing 7 hours sleep every single night. What a waste of writing time!

Peppercorn Street and Cinnamon Gardens have delighted readers because Anna likes to mix people of various ages in her tales, not just focus on one age group. Well, that’s what it’s like in real life, isn’t it? And she can guarantee you a happy ending because she gets to choose!

These days Anna writes complex historical and modern stories about families and relationships. She figures she’ll have to live to at least 120 to write down all the stories that are hopping up and down in her brain begging to be told.

Her latest series of stories is set in an imaginary Lancashire town called Rivenshaw just after World War 2, a time she remembers clearly because she was four when the war ended. She met her father for the first time that year as he’d been serving in the Middle East.

Anna’s always been fascinated by how ordinary people lived in the past. Because of the bombing there was a huge housing shortage in Britain after the war, and the Rivenshaw series focuses on a group of returned service people trying to set up a building company. Men and women are working hard to make a new life, but the past can sometimes hamper that.

The books are: A Time to Remember, A Time for Renewal, A Time to Rejoice and Gifts for Our Time. The last book won’t be out until January 2017, but the others are now being avidly read by Anna’s many devoted readers.

Anna also writes novels set in Wiltshire – of course! She couldn’t live anywhere without looking into the history of that area. 16

The Town Crier Magazine | AUGUST 2016

Finally, if you fancy a trip to Australia, try Anna’s ‘Traders’ series, about migrants to Western Australia in the 1860s and 70s. (Yes, she’s researched Australia too!) Most Australian novels are set in Sydney and the Eastern States. As Anna lives in the west, 2,500 miles from there, she uses her own state as background, which gives a different view of the Antipodes. Western Australia has a very different history.

There is a lot of information on Anna’s website: www.annajacobs.com and you can read the first chapters of all her 75 novels there. Be warned though: her stories are addictive.

Anna Jacobs: Historicals – A Time to Remember, A Time for Renewal, Legacy of Greyladies, A Time to Rejoice Modern stories – Peppercorn Street, Cinnamon Gardens, Tomorrow’s Path. Find out more at: www.annajacobs.com

WIN A SIGNED COPY OF “A TIME TO REMEMBER” Anna Jacobs has kindly donated one signed copy of A Time to Remember to be won by one lucky reader. To be in with a chance of winning please email your name and a contact number to production@ towncriermagazine.com. The Editor's decision is final.

Wessex Auction Rooms Wessex Auction Rooms, just outside Chippenham, enjoyed a busy and successful auction on Friday 17 June, including a wide range of music and sports items. Highlights of the auction included two rare Marc Bolan singles. Unaware of the value her late husband’s collection, the seller was delighted when Wessex Auction Rooms’ vinyl expert soon uncovered a number of vinyl gems. Hippy Gumbo, Bolan’s first recording for Parlophone sold in its original Parlophone sleeve for £650 and The Third Degree, his second single for Decca with its original company sleeve sold for £360.

With a summer of sport already started and more to look forward to, other auction highlights included items from football and athletics. A collection of original 1966 Football World Cup Rosettes plus other items sold for £200 and 11 boxed Willie Rolykins mascots sold for £170. One particularly unique item which sold was long jumper Greg Rutherford’s signed London 2012 Olympic Gold Medal winning spikes. Wessex Auction Rooms are accepting items for their next Vinyl, Music and Sports sale, which takes place on 28 October. Can you help us to help others? Imagine when mobility becomes difficult and means you are more confined, you cannot take part in the activities you previously enjoyed or meet with friends because getting about is difficult – that’s when Calne Community Transport can help with two adapted minibuses providing a door-to-door service to take you to club, day centre, on shopping trips or outings. This is a local Charity, in existence for 25 years, and is a lifeline for those who might otherwise be housebound, enabling them to meet and enjoy the company of friends. The downside is that we are losing two of our long-serving Trustee supporters (totalling 40+ years as volunteers for the Charity) who retire in August. With a management team of just three Trustees we will struggle to maintain what we do without more help ... can you spare a couple of hours each month, initially to learn how we operate the service, to share your knowledge to take forward the service and publicise how it can be of benefit to a wider group. Your support would be so much appreciated, especially if you have an interest in transport, some experience with IT and publicity, or want to help develop the service to be of greater benefit to those who rely on it. Please contact Sue on 01249 812526 for more information. 18

When she heard she had a place on the associate programme the look on her face was unbelievable. She couldn’t stop jumping up and down!”

Eight-year-old Ellie Young and nine year old Rose Hoadley both attend Dancing Academy, based in Chippenham, and they’ve both secured places on the prestigious course. Dancing Academy, run by MD Samantha Reed, works with more than 250 dancers of all ages every week who take part in a range of classes from street and modern dance to ballet, singing and musical theatre. Ellie and Rose will still attend their classes at the Dancing Academy but will also take part in the Royal Ballet School programme at weekends to nurture their talent in classical ballet.

“She was over the moon and didn’t expect it. Dancing for Ellie is a hobby but one she’s very good at!” Samantha Reed said: “Rose and Ellie both have a fantastic work ethic and this will really help them. They attend classes several times a week and are doing many different styles of dance to help achieve well rounded dance training.

Samantha Reed, who has built an extraordinary reputation with her academy, says this latest success is really exciting and the girls competed alongside hundreds of others to gain their places. “It’s my job to inspire all of the students in my dance school to achieve their own personal goals whether that’s giving them the courage to stand up in school assembly, dance in church or audition for the Royal Ballet School,” Samantha said. “The students I teach are like an extended family, so each achievement is personal to me. I love seeing the students enjoy what they do. Dance is tough, has its ups and downs but ultimately we do it for the love of dancing.” The girls are thrilled to have been chosen to be part of this course 20

Ellie, who has been dancing she was three, also successfully auditioned for a place at Tring Park Classical Ballet Academy and is the youngest child there. She recently qualified for the All England semifinals in ballet and her mother Beccy says getting onto the Royal Ballet associate programme is equally thrilling:

“There’s a theory that 10,000 hours of practicing a skill can make you an expert. Well these girls are quickly totting up the hours and it is a pleasure to see this level of enthusiasm in these excited young students”. along with other children whose sights are set on a career in dance. Associates sometimes have the opportunity to perform with the Royal Ballet and other well-known dance companies.

Dancing Academy offers classes in classical ballet, baby ballet, adult ballet, tap, street and modern dance as well as musical theatre, singing, drama and Pilates. Alongside Samantha are four other exprofessional dancers, now teachers.

Rose has been dancing since she started school and recently

Springboard celebrates 40th anniversary

S

PRINGBOARD OPPORTUNITY GROUP is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, established in 1976 at The Bridge Centre. We are an independent charity based in Chippenham working for children aged 0-5 with a social educational need and/or disability (SEN/D). We are a specialist opportunity group operating as the District Specialist Centre (DSC) for North Wiltshire. We work in partnership with Wiltshire Council. Children attending Springboard need additional support to overcome specific challenges due to developmental delay.

(SEND) workers, parents can also self-refer. See the website for further information. www. springboardchippenham.co.uk We aim to offer places to children as soon as possible whether it is for assessment, full placement or a Stay and Play session or workshops. We work in partnership with mainstream settings and other professionals to provide support. Staff are encouraged to think holistically and about how families can be supported beyond Springboard with agency support. We aim to achieve fundraising needs through grant applications, donations and fundraising events. Without a doubt the current climate is challenging. We draw on the positive reputation that Springboard has achieved to not only raise funds but increase our visibility across the whole of the North to enable families and services to engage. Our fundraising has increased from £50k to £80k per annum. We achieve what we do through the support of volunteers, this includes playroom activities, fundraising, maintenance, admin, management and travel. On average this is approximately 40 hours per week. We find that fundraising support in the Chippenham community is greater than elsewhere, this we consider to be because of where we are based. Thank you Chippenham.

As with all early years settings the children’s learning and development is promoted through play. Children can access independent sessions from aged 2 as part of their free entitlement funding. The majority of children also attend mainstream settings. Springboard works as a centre for the families to provide information, support and help in accessing relevant agencies and professionals. Children are generally referred to Springboard by a wide range of people such as Health Visitors, Speech and Language Therapists, Physiotherapists, Paediatricians or local authority Special Educational Needs and Disability 22

At Springboard we do everything through play, it is a child’s first language and we are true to our early years profession, it is often messy but is full of benefits for all areas of development. Children are encouraged to use Makaton (if you know Mr Tumble you know MAKATON!), we use visuals and the Picture Exchange System (PECS) to aid communication. Here are some of the things parents say about their child’s Springboard experience. “When we first joined it was the only place outside of our home that I felt my child would be safe. Tips for sleeping, feeding and communication were especially helpful” “Every staff member has a wealth of knowledge to offer and I've picked up so many ideas, tips and strategies to help support my child and deal with issues we face.” “Being able to talk to other parents and professionals made life easier” Jane Boulton BA Hons. What’s On

Wiltshire Festival of Engineering welcomes support from regional technology businesses Wednesday 28th September 2016 at Chippenham’s Olympiad Leisure Centre The Wiltshire Festival of Engineering has won the support of major sponsors, including the James Dyson Foundation, Hitachi, Good Energy and Great Western Railway. The Festival, the brainchild of Chippenham MP Michelle Donelan, aims to inspire the next generation of local engineers and manufacturers, paving the way for a new skilled workforce for future business needs. “We will give young people the opportunity to participate, explore and interact with those already engaged in research and development, design and production in our area,” said Ms Donelan. “It’s essential we provide the catalyst young people require, to see what science and engineering has to offer, plus how it can influence the world around us.” The Festival will set a new standard; capturing the imaginations of young people and supporting schools. Its work will stimulate student interest in science,

technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects, all of which are crucial to future engineering careers. Many of Wiltshire’s most successful companies operate in the technology sphere. Yet without home-grown talent to take on future design challenges, such firms may have to source employees from outside local employment markets. “It would be a tragedy to see our local technology firms struggling to find local talent,” comments Ms Donelan. “Yet without the right emphasis on STEM subjects, particularly in Design and Technology, young people may fail to access work in the engineering and technology arena. We have a superb heritage in design in the region. As crucially, tomorrow’s engineers must design solutions that address not only modern needs, but modern challenges in a fast paced world. “For these reasons, the Wiltshire Festival of Engineering is vital in more than one way. We can build local talent and local jobs, but we should also think of how we can influence on global and sustainable levels too.” The Festival will take place on Wednesday 28th September 2016 at Chippenham’s Olympiad Leisure Centre. Michelle Donelan anticipates hundreds of local young people attending. “I hope they will be inspired by some of the fantastic businesses that are based locally,” she said. “The Festival of Engineering is not a silver bullet, but I hope that it can grow to become a valuable resource for career education and inspiration in the region.” For further information, or to get involved with the Festival and its aims, email jo@michelledonelan.co.uk or visit www.festivalofengineering.com

A guest’s perspective

On Tuesday 28th June I attended the Referral Link at its new venue The Dumb Post, Bremhill, Calne. Although initially unsure of what to expect, I soon realised it was a friendly and supportive group with a very relaxed atmosphere.

n Administration

At an intial gathering outside in the sunshine we all chatted informally whilst admiring the superb view. Then back inside for a great cooked breakfast.

Telephone:

Each of us then gave a one minute presentation briefly describing our business and the kind of work for which we are looking for referrals. This is a great way of finding out the diverse make up of the group with includes community organisations, charities and of course many local businesses.

That’s the task facing the trustees of Sevington Victorian School as they prepare for a special exhibition of the life and works of Miss Elizabeth Squire. She left such a mark on theplace that when she died, the school room was locked and everything remained exactly as she left it. On Sunday August 14th you can come and see the school and view a special pop up exhibition featuring some of the objects that were important in her life. The afternoon starts at 2.00 and at 2.15present day Miss Squire be offering a Victorian lesson in the school room. The 2nd Pewsham Brownies group put on a royal party for elderly guests at Pewsham Community Hall earlier this month. The hall was adorned with union jack bunting and flags and the cake were baked and serviced by the Brownies.

Laura Thomas, Chippenham Group Coordinator, said: “We had a fantastic time with the Brownies, they were the perfect hosts, offering delicious cakes, great company and some fun games. “The tea parties are a simple idea, but one that can make a big difference. The group represents the perfect opportunity to get out of the house, make new friends within the local community, and generally brighten up a weekend. “I would love to hear from anyone that is interested in joining us as guest at our monthly tea parties and volunteers who are interested in driving or acting as a tea party host.” Contact the Elderly is a national charity dedicated to tackling loneliness and social isolation amongst older people, through regular face-to-face contact. The group is open to guest who are 75 or older and who live alone, and little or no contact with family or friends. Are you confused about buying a property? Buying a home is, for most of us, the biggest financial commitment we can make and it pays to ensure legal advice is sound. Here are just some things to consider if you are about to embark on your first purchase of a newly-built property.

Street Lighting:

Boundaries:

Is the plot staked or marked “on the ground” so you can see what you are getting?

Roads and Access:

Is the new estate road well laid out and does it link to an existing main road? Will access to the plot will be direct from the estate road or will it be shared by means of a private driveway serving other properties too?

Services:

You should try and establish if possible the route of service connections to and from the property. The water supply is likely to be metered but check . Also ask if you will need to become involved in making arrangements for connection of any services

NHBC:

New properites often benefit from NHBC Ten Year WB Advertiseror Conveyancing 2013_Layout 10/4/13 12:00 PM Page 1 Warranty similar scheme – but1do check. This does

not remove the need to consider whether to have the property professionally surveyed. Ask what will be the likely position of any street lights. Ask if there are any proposals to site a street lamp outside, or in very close proximity to the front of your property, then it may be possible to persuade the developers to move it.

Previous Use of the Site:

You should try and establish the prior use of the site. If there is any suggestion the Site, or any part of it, may previously have been used for industrial purposes then this is something which will require further investigation and an appropriate environmental search would almost certainly be required.

Variations to Layout:

The developer will, as standard practice, reserve the right to vary the precise finished layout and placement of the property within the boundaries of the plot. Ask whether any changes are planned.

Supplier’s Details:

It is quite often handy to obtain details from the developers as to the identity of suppliers, particularly kitchen units, appliances and suchlike, so that if necessary you can deal direct with them at a later date.

Visits at Different Times:

Visit the site at different times perhaps on a weekend, when most of the existing residents will be at home, so t you can better establish and gauge the amount of traffic, children and suchlike that may be likely to be “in situ”.

Incentives and Discounts:

If the developer is offering any inducement of any kind e.g. discount, Stamp Duty allowance, carpets, appliances or any other non-cash incentive, then such matters must be reported to your Mortgage Lender as soon as possible to avoid delays.

If you have any questions about moving home or you want any legal advice around the purchase of a property, please contact our property team – 01249 814536. Next month, we’ll talk about what steps you can take if you are buying a property with another person – such as a partner, parent or a friend.

Quiche Lorraine Preparation time: 30-40 mins including chill time. Cooking time: 25-30 minutes Ingredients 4 eggs 175g / 6oz streaky bacon 1 onion (finely chopped) 125g / 4.5oz hard cheese (Gruyere is nice but cheddar is fine) 250ml / 9fl oz single cream Salt and pepper Pastry 175g / 6oz plain flour 85g / 3oz hard block butter (chilled) Pinch salt 2-3 tbsp water

METHOD Make the pastry: put the flour into a bowl, rub in the butter until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs, then add the salt and enough water to make a firm dough. Roll it out and line a 20cm / 8 inch loose-bottomed flan tin. Chill in the fridge for 20 minutes While the pastry is chilling preheat oven to 220C / gas 7. Prick the pastry case all over with a fork then line it with greaseproof paper. Use baking beans or lentils to weight it down. Bake for ten minutes. Remove the greaseproof paper and bake for another 5-10 minutes until pale golden brown. Reduce the oven temperature to 180C. Chop the bacon into small pieces and fry in a pan until crisp and golden. Remove the bacon with a slotted spoon and pop it into the pastry case. Then fry the onion in the bacon fat until that too is golden and add it to the pastry case. Top with the grated cheese. Beat the eggs, cream, salt and pepper together lightly, then pour into the pastry case. Bake for 25-30 minutes until just set. Take care not to overcook the quiche or it will develop a rubbery texture, full of little holes.

Homemade Ice Lollies

O you share the same childhood memories of summertime as me? When it got hot, did you take out the ice cube tray, fill it with diluted cordial and eagerly wait for it to set so that you could enjoy impromptu homemade ice lollies? And were you usually disappointed when you came face to face with crunchy, crystallised cubes of weakly flavoured water rather than the delicious, mouth-watering, thirstquenching, temperature-cooling creations you were expecting?! Legend has it that the ice lolly was invented in 1905 by an 11 year old American boy named Frank Epperson, who accidentally left a glass of soda with a mixing stick poking out of it on his porch overnight. The next day, he found he had made a delicious frozen treat. Regardless of their origin, homemade ice lollies offer endless possibilities. Orange and lemon, minted milk, strawberries and cream, pineapple and coconut, grapefruit and campari or vodka 38

and tonic are just some of the flavours you could try. To avoid the disappointing results I experienced, here are a few tips to ensure success at the freezer. 1 Make the mixture too strong. Cold numbs the taste buds, so add extra lemon juice, balsamic vinegar or even chilli to give the lolly oomph! 2 Sugar improves the taste and softens the texture. Too little will result in a solid block of flavoured ice; too much will result in a lolly that is partially liquid. Healthier alternatives to sugar include date syrup, honey and coconut sugar. 3 When filling the mould, leave about 5mm at the top to allow the mixture to expand. 4 To make sure the sticks stand upright, freeze for about an hour and then insert the sticks. Alternatively, cover the top of the moulds with foil, make a slit and insert the sticks through it.

5 Freezing quickly reduces the amount of ice crystals. Turn the freezer to the coldest setting and place the moulds at the back. Lollies on average take around 4-5 hours to freeze but set faster, the higher the water to sugar ratio. Alcohol slows the process, with too much alcohol resulting in a slushy lolly! 6 To un-mould, immerse in hot water for 20-30 seconds. Dip just below the top rim and pull hard on the sticks to yank the lollies out. 7 Store frozen lollies in sealable freezer bags or waxed paper. Make sure they are airtight to prevent ice crystals from forming inside. 8 For super quick lollies, simply freeze pieces of fruit. Cover bananas in peanut butter or chocolate spread before freezing or blend fruit puree with plain yoghurt.

Rosé Wine T

by Susan Brookes

HE popularity of rosé wine is increasing. Barely heard of twenty years ago, a Nielsen report in 2015 said that rosé sales were growing ten times faster than overall table wine sales. Rosé wine can be created in a variety of ways. The most common is maceration - where red grape skins rest in the juice for a shorter period of time than if red wine was being created. The winemaker removes the skins when the perfect colour is reached. The second is the ‘bled’ method. Here, juice is bled off during the first few hours of making a red wine and placed in a new vat to make rosé. Very rarely and usually only when creating sparkling wines a blending method is used where red wine is added to a vat of white wine. The primary flavours of rosé wine are red fruit, flowers, citrus, and melon with a green crunchy flavour in the finish similar to rhubarb or celery. The exact flavour depends on the types of grapes used. Rosés can vary from dry to sweet. All of the mainstream brands have Rosé versions. For something special, seek out award winners like; Lindauer Special Reserve NV New Zealand, Château Salettes, Bandol 2014, Barefoot White Zinfandel or Gusbourne of Kent’s 2011 Brut Rosé.

The George Inn at Sandy Lane T

HE George Inn “a perfect example of the Old English Pub” with a splash of contemporary style set in the beautiful hamlet of Sandy Lane with its perfect examples of chocolate box thatched cottages. The George Inn re-opened on 12 February 2016 having undergone a full refurbishment programme. Now boasting a fine dining room with beautiful views across the Wiltshire countryside from the conservatory which has become the favoured place to dine and also hold private dinners or celebrations. The front remains a firm favourite with the locals for evening and lunch time drinks. The food is a little different than the usual pub menu, for this season The George is cooking up lambs sweetbreads and pigs cheeks with crispy pigs ear. Chef Wyn Jones has created his own seasonal menu with a twist on traditional country fare, boasting a fine selection for all tastes. Owner Helen Drake leads a superb team delivering an excellent service, something we wish to build our early reputation on. As all the food is made to order and in house, we don’t need to advertise Gluten free or dairy free as we can amend any dishes to suit the needs of the diner. In the winter months the roaring log fire and wood burning stove keeps the place warm and welcoming while the summer months to the rear of The George is a sunny garden ideal to sit and enjoy one of our famous antipasti boards, a glass of wine or just a cold beer! We welcome children and well behaved dogs. 40

Lunch at The George Inn We are lucky in the Wiltshire area to have many fantastic places to dine out, and less than 10 minutes from the centre of Calne is The George Inn. Perfectly set amongst the thatched cottages in Sandy Lane it is the ideal place to treat yourself. The dining room is cosy and comfortable with great views from the oak-framed conservatory which is ideal for parties and weddings. The new refurbishment works well, blending old and new to create a relaxed atmosphere. When we visited we were greeted by Pam O’Neill who looked after us extremely well during our excellent lunch. Owner Helen Drake has a philosophy of offering fine dining at reasonable prices and together with Chef Wyn Jones they have created a menu with a fine selection of dishes made with locally sourced ingredients.

Take part in Bake Off for Lift Off ! W

National Air Ambulance Week 19-25 September 2016

ILTSHIRE Air Ambulance (WAA) is encouraging people to get their bake on and raise money to keep its helicopter and crew flying and saving lives. The charity’s theme for National Air Ambulance Week (19-25 September 2016) is Bake Off for Lift Off and it is calling on individuals, groups, schools and businesses to join in the bake-related fun. Kenresa Stratford, Fundraising Co-ordinator at WAA, said: “We’re hoping that this year’s Air Ambulance Week will be bigger and better than ever as we Bake Off for Lift Off and we’d love as many schools, communities, groups, businesses and individuals as possible to take part and get their bake on. From holding bake sales to bake offs and pudding parties, there are lots of ways to get involved. “Air Ambulance Week is always popular in Wiltshire and we’ve chosen a baking theme this year as we’ve found that many supporters have raised money for us through bake sales and they are a brilliant and delicious way to raise money. It would be great if people all over Wiltshire did their bit by baking and raising money to enable our helicopter to keep lifting off and saving lives. If you’d like to get your bake on, please

Why Take Your Baby or Toddler Swimming? Because it’s educational, potentially life-saving and really good fun!

S

WIMMING is one of the few things your baby can do from birth, and as well as being fantastic for them, it’s also one of the healthiest activities for you too. In water, little ones are able to exercise every muscle in their body – including some they wouldn’t yet find on land. Whilst the emphasis in our sessions is on strengthening the bond between parent and child, swimming from birth is also excellent for their development. During their first year of life, a baby’s brain grows more rapidly than at any other time, with every movement they make helping to strengthen this growth. Despite looking gentle, swimming provides a complete physical workout, strengthening the heart, lungs and respiratory system which, in turn, aids development of the brain. What’s more, regular swimming can enhance their awareness while improving eating and sleeping patterns – a definite bonus for parents!

A weekly swim session will also help them develop physically, emotionally and mentally. For instance, right from the word go they’ll be learning to respond to voice commands, which is fantastic stimulation for a newborn baby’s brain. Water familiarisation is an equally important aspect. Babies who swim on a regular basis develop a respect for water and can be taught potentially lifesaving skills. And these skills kick in from remarkably early on, proven by the fact that Water Babies pupils as young as two have saved themselves from drowning. So with so many good reasons to take your little one swimming, how do you make sure you choose the right baby swim school? Choosing a swim school Teaching babies to swim from birth is a skilled profession, requiring considerable in-depth knowledge. However there is fairly limited regulation, so it’s vital that as a parent you take the time to make a well informed choice about which classes you choose to take your little one to. Training Always check the qualifications and experience the teachers of the swim school must gain and don’t be afraid to ask questions. A good company will be happy to answer your questions! Incredibly, every

Water Babies teacher could have trained as a private pilot – five times over – in the time it takes them to fully qualify! Structure Some classes will simply get your child used to the pool while others are more structured, with a distinct course progression designed to help them hit key milestones. The Water Babies programme is endorsed by the national governing body for swimming, the ASA, and gives young swimmers the chance to progress into mainstream swimming lessons earlier, enabling them to continue their aquatic adventure as they grow. Fun! Baby swimming is a relaxing and enjoyable activity, perfectly designed to enhance the parent/ child bond. Whichever route you choose, the emphasis should always be on you feeling like you’re evolving at your child’s own pace, and on both of you having fun.

Water Babies classes are available in Calne, Chippenham, Devizes and Trowbridge. For more information, please phone: 01249 248863 Email: bubba@waterbabies.co.uk or visit www.waterbabies.co.uk The Town Crier Magazine | AUGUST 2016

ECUADOR

What’s on your bucket list? by Carol Price

Pebbles Travel on location in Quito airport

W

HERE in the world could you stand either side of the Equator and yet be at an altitude of 2850 metres high in the famous Andes mountain range of South America.

Carol Price on both sides of the Equator

As I slowly tick off my bucket list, this trip took us to Ecuador one of the smallest countries in South America, probably best know for the Galapagos Islands. If you have time don't miss the rest of this hidden gem it has it all !! History, culture, Amazon rainforests, Volcanoes, beaches and the world famous Galapagos islands. Quito the highest capital in the world sitting at 2850 metres was our first introduction. The old city with its cobbled streets and old Spanish Colonial buildings are surrounded by old extinct and active Volcano's among them Cotopaxi the coutries second largest active volcano, which sits with a commanding view over Quito. I found this one of my highlights as we were lucky enough to see it in all its splendour with snow capped coned peak and smoking !! A visit to the Ecuador Equator monument and museum 15 miles to the North of Quito is a must ! It was here we had the chance to stand both in the North and Southern hemisphere at the same time, the sun directly overhead and yet because we were high in the Andes the air was thin and cool we needed a jumper ! After two nights in Quito we are off on our second part of this grand adventure to the Galapagos Islands. These are reached by a three hour flight from mainland Ecuador. This time the Equator is sea level and hot ! We had decided a small ship cruise would be the best way to see these Unique islands and we were not disappointed. We spent five nights with 10 other fellow passenger onboard and each day we would anchor off a different island to visit the sights, wild life, snorkel or just enjoy the deserted beaches and the amazing scenery, every island seemed so different. Be prepared for early mornings ! We are naturally early risers so had no problems but it was an advantage to make the most of the slightly cooler early morning before the sun became to hot ... we are on the Equator ! Out last day and time to move on ... can this trip get any better than this Well my friends it can. After a couple of days rest on the coast in Guayaquil we boarded the Tren Crucero train. This is a restored Steam train that makes

46

What a Grand Adventure this has been and as I look through my hundreds of photos as I wait in the airport for our journey home. I think .... where next my friends? Please feel free to contact Carol on 07464 786056 or e-mail her carol@pebblestravel.co.uk

its way from the Guayaquil on the coast through what is know as the Valley of the Volcanoes and the famous "Devils Nose" a switch back system to get the train up through the higher reaches of the Andes, to our final destination Quito. This line was built over a hundred years ago and at that time was the only means of connecting the mountains and the coast. We shared our five day journey with some fellow global travellers and the whole experience was just wonderful. The scenery was breathtaking, excursions off the train took us to culture rural villages where life has not changed in the past hundred years. The food and service was faultless and the train crew such fun. The "Devils Nose" was incredible especially when you think when it was built . It is said to be one of the most difficult journeys in the world. Another bucket list ticked. The train arrives in Quito and we say goodbye to our fellow train travellers as yes we are off on our final part of this grand adventure . After a nights rest in Quito the cases re-packed and we are off to the Amazon! A short flight over the Andes brings us to Coco our link to the Amazon rainforest. Our home for the next four night is reached by a high speed large canoe up the Napo river a journey of two hours followed by a jungle walk of 30 mins followed by a short canoe ride across the lake to our Lodge. We are ready for our jungle adventures ! Early mornings and late afternoons are spent on different jungle activities like the canopy walk which is spread high above the jungle floor to observe the many different animal or birds. Canoe trips through the many small jungle rivers and creeks early morning as the sun was coming up is a special memory as the sounds of the jungle come to life. One fun highlight was Pihana fishing ! No modern equipment needed just string and a bamboo cane and we were away! The lodge was excellent and we were sad to say goodbye but all good things have to end sometime !

AVE you ever had a holiday ruined because of over-exposure to the sun? I have. It was 2007 and I was in Mauritius. I’d been snorkelling, fascinated by the marine life I was observing, oblivious to the sun beating down on me. Once on dry land, my back started to blister and I developed oozing sores that needed medical treatment. Sun-starved as we are in this beautiful, verdant land of ours, it is easy to overdo it in the brilliant white sunshine of foreign holiday destinations, and sun burn is just one condition we may suffer from. Prevention is always better than cure, so here are a couple of tips to keep your holiday happy and carefree! First, try and limit exposure to the sun during the hottest hours (around 12pm-3pm) and apply sun screen liberally 30 minutes before going out. Dress in T shirts instead of strappy vests and wear a cap or hat. Make sure you drink plenty of fluids and be sure to carry bottles of water with you when outside. To avoid dehydration, the body needs to take in more fluids than it expels. A fall in water and salt levels can result in nausea, faintness and heavy sweating. So, have fun in the sun this summer but don’t come back over cooked!

Health Matters

Bladder Cancer Patient Support L by Dick Hills

AST year 10,400 people were diagnosed with Bladder Cancer. It is the 4th most common cancer in men and the 7th most common cancer overall. Odds are that 5,000 of those people will die of the disease and yet it is an eminently treatable cancer if caught early enough. BC is often attributed to years of smoking, and/or exposure to chemicals at work, and is more prevalent in men over the age of 40. Patients diagnosed with BC do not need to die, they can be treated and can live a normal life. Early diagnosis is the key. I can only speak for men, but I am sure that our lady friends are similar – if you have discomfort passing urine or notice blood in the urine – Go to the Doctor ASAP. It may be nothing serious but on the other hand it can be the first sign of Bladder Cancer. I was diagnosed with Bladder Cancer following a trip to the Doctor after discomfort passing urine and blood in the pee. The Doctor referred me to the Urology Department at Great Western, and there began my journey. This was in September 2011 and from then until December 2013 I spent a lot of time going to Swindon. The next stage of the diagnosis was a flexible cystoscopy (Now for my fellow men, when I first heard about this I winced and crossed my legs!!! But it is not too bad. It is done under local anaesthetic and a small camera is inserted into the water pipe so that the Urologist can have a look at the inside of your bladder. Not painful, just a little uncomfortable) The Urologist can give you an instant result. If there is any obvious cancer there they will have you back in, and under a general anaesthetic will cut out the cancer. It is called a TURBT – Transurethral Resection of a Bladder Tumour – and is the first line of attack. Scans are done, and ultrasounds, and blood tests. Other treatments include Radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy before radical surgery. I had two courses of immunotherapy using BCG. The side effects are not as serious as with chemo and radiotherapy but can be just as debilitating. My major course lasted 6 weeks of weekly installations into the bladder. The first few weeks were fine but then all sorts of problems occurred, mainly involving the frequency of the need to visit the loo and the discomfort in peeing. Whilst all this was going on I was having cystoscopies every few months to watch progress. It seemed never ending and I would have greatly appreciated someone to talk to. In September 2013 the Urologists at Swindon referred me to the Bristol Urological Institute at Southmead Hospital in Bristol, where after seeing a consultant surgeon I was given three options: • Stop all treatments, go away and get on with my life and face any consequences should they occur down the line

52

• Carry on as I had been for the last two years, but apart from almost living in Swindon Hospital, run the risk of the disease developing and a need for radical treatment later on.

• Take the bull by the horns and have the bladder and all the other bits out (Prostate, & glands) Because BC has a habit of keep coming back and can be fast acting and very fatal it seemed that Option 3 was the only viable one. So into Southmead I went. I had the op and after a few days in intensive care and the ward was sent home to recover with my new system of plumbing. Getting used to the new system with an external bag was no problem although it did give me a bit of a paunch and increased my trouser size a bit! But I got there and now have no bladder or prostate. So I can’t die of Bladder Cancer – haven’t got one, can’t die of Prostate Cancer – haven’t got one. (That’s two of the top four of male killer cancers dealt with!). Recovery took several months to get completely back to normal, but that’s not too big a surprise after all it was pretty major surgery. Progress was slow at first but then a bit faster as time went by. During my journey I had wonderful support from all the NHS staff I came into contact with, but not once did I meet someone in the same boat as me. Cancer can be very frightening and certainly very depressing as you go through what seems like endless treatments, tests and scans. I decided to do something about it in the hope that I could help other people as they embark on their journey. With the help of the Macmillan Urology/ Oncology Cancer Nurse Specialist and the support of the hospital we set up a support group at Great Western Hospital in Swindon. This group is now well established and meets every two months. The networking between group members is really great and helping people as they go through different treatments. We have the support of the Urology Consultants who make themselves freely available to give advice and answer questions. Following this success, we have set up a group at Southmead Hospital in Bristol, and I am hoping to set up a group at RUH in Bath in the near future. I have joined forces with the ActionBladderCancer Charity to help them as they are trying to set up support groups around the country. So far this year eight new groups have started with their help. So if anyone is interested in helping with this venture I would love to hear from them. You can contact Dick Hills at: dickhills@actionbladdercanceruk.org

10 things you might not know about . . .

W

buy parasitic wasps in order to kill a particular moth known as the Sugarcane Borer.

ASPS… The very word tends to cause an involuntary shudder in most people. Unlike bees, you won’t see any charities asking you to do your bit to save them. Most species don’t pollinate plants and many of us have been stung by a wasp at one point, so it’s easy to dismiss them as just a pointless nuisance. And yet, dig a little deeper and they’re actually quite fascinating creatures.

7. While we think of wasps as yellow and black, they do come in other colours, including red, blue and green, and pure black.

1. There are thousands of different species of wasps, from the Common Wasp that targets our summer picnics, to the more unusual Ruby-Tailed Wasp.

9. Up to 10,000 wasps can live in one nest.

2. The Asian Giant Hornet can reach 5cm in length. (Imagine one of those attacking your jam sandwich.) 3. While some live in colonies, just like bees, other species are solitary, and rather anti-social. 4. They’re predatory. The adult female of some species will actually lay its eggs on the larvae of another insect, or inside an adult insect. Once hatched, the wasp larvae will eat its host. 5. The adult wasp captures and paralyses insects to feed to its growing larvae. 6. While the above sounds rather unpleasant, it does have its advantages for humans, as wasps can help to control many of the insects that plague our crops. Some farmers actively encourage wasps for this reason. In Brazil, for example, sugarcane farmers 54

Wasps 8. Social wasps make their nests by chewing up bits of wood and making a substance with it that’s very similar to paper. 10. An old wasp nest won’t be used by a new queen, so they’re usually only inhabited for one year. Fascinating though they may be, most of us would still rather not have a wasp nest in our house or garden. You can get insecticides to try to kill the wasps yourself, but it’s rather more sensible to call in the experts. Try your local council or look in the Town Crier for pest control companies. If you’d rather not kill the wasps, there are humane ways to move the nest or encourage them to vacate it, but they’re not fool proof and you will need to take precautions to avoid getting stung. Before doing anything, do make sure that they’re wasps, rather than bees. A bee colony is usually safe to leave where it is, but if you want it moved, your local beekeeping association should be able to help.

Gardening

Funky Foliage 56

W

E all love flowers. They're what gardening is all about and the fact that they tend to be relatively short-lived makes them special.

But a garden can't survive on flowers alone. It needs to look attractive all year round. This is where friendly foliage plants come in to their own. Many non-evergreen plants have beautiful showy foliage between April and November and we'd be mad not to take full advantage of it. Rodgersia pinnata is an excellent example. It has huge, attractive bronze, leathery leaves which are almost sculptural in appearance. As a bonus it sends up feathery cream flowers in the summer. It likes soil which doesn't dry out. A pebble mulch works brilliantly because it complements the plant. Hostas have truly beautiful leaves but I've tried and failed with them on many occasions because my garden is home to a race of super-slugs who seem able eat hostas faster than I can plant them! I've had some success with the variety "Frances Williams" which is less prone to attack though I still need to go on slug patrol every evening! Hostas like a moist soil so if yours is on the dry side work in plenty of compost or manure at planting time and mulch well. .. preferably with something sharp to act as a deterrent to the slugs.

Gardening

I have had tremendous success with ferns. They are the most useful plant for shade. My favourite is the ostrich-plume fern, Matteuccia struthiopteris. Plant them under trees and shrubs and watch the stunning lime-green foliage unfold each spring. A few years ago I had a wonderful purple New Zealand flax, Phormium tenax. Its bold, dramatic fountains of spiky foliage made it a firm favourite. Unfortunately it succumbed to an extended period of sub-zero temperatures one winter. I keep meaning to try again. When I do I will but the much hardier green variety ... just in case. Many people forget grasses when

Gardening they think about foliage but there are some wonderfully attractive varieties. Try Miscanthus sinensis "Zebrinus". The leaves look like green ribbons, striped with yellow and reach chest height. Cut it down to ground level each February. Finally, if you have the space, for real in your-face foliage try the golden-leaved Catalpa bignonioides "Aurea". Grow it as a large bush. Prune each stem back to a sprouting bud around knee-height each spring and mulch with manure at the same time. It will reward you with leaves as big as Frisbees! Now that's really funky foliage.

A Good Read

That Summer in Ischia

Which Witch?

...............................................................................................

...............................................................................................

by Penny Feeny

Ischia: an Italian island in the bay of Naples. When Liddy receives a phone call from her best friend, Helena, inviting her to spend the summer there as an au pair to a wealthy family, she can hardly resist. Helena assures her that the children will be no bother and they can spend two months sunbathing on the beach. Only it doesn’t turn out that way. When one of their young charges goes missing they immediately fall under suspicion and after that summer they never see each other again. Twenty-five years later Liddy, back in England, is walking her dog on the beach when she sees a young woman who looks like Helena. But it can’t be. It turns out to be Allie, her old best friend’s 23-yearold daughter. As she befriends her the mysteries surrounding the events of that summer in Ischia start to unravel. Her mother never talked much about that summer so Allie travels to Ischia to find out for herself. The action switches between location and time periods as Fenny unveils the events that changed so many lives. Her descriptions of Ischia are truly magical, evoking a carefree exotic lifestyle, and contrast with the clear descriptions of the author’s native Liverpool. A great read.

by Eva Ibbotson

Eva Ibbotson is an award winning children’s author, but her novels are not as well known by adults. Born in Austria she fled to England under the Nazi regime and this has had an impact on some of her novels, many of which use Austria as a backdrop. However, Which Witch? is clearly rooted in the English countryside and is a fantastical novel for readers aged 9-11. As the story begins we learn of the darkest wizard in the country. Arriman the Awful lives near the village of Todcaster and spends his days performing dark magic. However, over the years he has grown tired of this and is delighted to receive a prophecy that a much darker wizard will appear and take over his role. However, when no one appears he decides that there is only one thing for it: he must take a wife and have a child who will take over from him. So he calls together the seven witches of Todcaster and holds a contest to find the darkest witch. And what a bunch of women they are! Here Ibbotson’s writing has a touch of Roald Dahl as she describes the horrible nature of them. All except one, Belladonna. The only problem is that Belladonna is a white witch who is only able to do good magic and Arriman is looking for a dark witch. With a bit of help from an earthworm, Belladonna sets out to win, but ends up proving that good magic can triumph as the true heir appears.

Following?

vicar was preaching one Sunday, when suddenly a lady in the front pew raised her hand and said, “Alleluia, praise the Lord.” The vicar was somewhat taken aback, and the same thing kept happening. Every few sentences, through the sermon, the lady would shout, “Alleluia, praise the Lord.” Finally, the church warden sitting behind the lady leant forward and asked her what was going on. “I’m a disciple of Jesus and I’m praising the Lord”, she replied. The church warden whispered, “that’s lovely, but church isn’t a place for that sort of thing.” I wonder if you consider yourself to be a disciple? Being a disciple is the churchy way to describe someone who follows Jesus. Following not in the casual Twitter sense, but being sincerely committed to learn from Jesus and discover more about his character. Following Jesus has highs and lows, joys and challenges. In my own Christian journey, there have been key times where I have noticeably grown and matured in faith, as well as plenty of other periods when frustrating stagnation seemed to have kicked in! A very fruitful year in my journey as a follower of Jesus came at the age of 18 or 19. I was away from home at university and discovered, for the first time in my life, other young people who called themselves Christians too! They came from a variety of church backgrounds, and I remember thinking that they all seemed to be far more excited, informed and enthusiastic about their faith than I was. What was their secret? I had grown up in a town centre middle of the road church that didn’t have any other young people in it. I sat in the pew most weeks, believed in God, said my prayers, but none of it really impacted on my everyday life. With the encouragement of friends, I decided to read the whole bible in one year. I found a bible that had a commentary with it, to help me understand the hard bits. I also found myself praying every day. One friend gave me a great tip. She said, when you pray to Jesus talk out loud! I tried it. Not in the supermarket, but on my bed, in my room. It transformed my prayer life. I went from thinking things, to really sharing my feelings and being far more honest with God. Another thing began: I found courage to defend my faith and

64

talk about it openly. It became very natural to speak to people about the amazing character of the God I was discovering more of every day. Many years after, a very close friend of mine told me that he noticed how dramatically I had changed for the better in that year. I was much less selfish and far more compassionate. Jesus softened my heart about all manner of things. The first disciples got on the rollercoaster ride of following Jesus and it inspired them to share their experiences across the known world. They followed him around villages in the Holy Land, to the Cross outside Jerusalem. They witnessed miracles, teachings, serious opposition and finally his risen body. The call to follow began three years before the resurrection, but they continued for the rest of their lives. The call to follow continues to go out today. Jesus continues to invite us to go where He goes and serve where He serves. The singer Bob Dylan once wrote, “Jesus tapped me on the shoulder and said, Bob, why are you resisting me? I said, I’m not resisting you! He said, You gonna follow me? I said, I’ve never thought about that before! He said, When you’re not following me, you’re resisting me.” Following Jesus carries a cost. I heard a true story not long ago about a Vicar who gave a sermon on how to be a better disciple. After the service, a farmer invited him to come over for a coffee and a chat on the subject. A few days later, he arrived at the house. The farmer sat him down, looked him in the eye, and asked the question, “how can I give my farm to Jesus?” The Holy Spirit gave the Vicar the words to say: “First, admit that the farm belongs to Jesus. Second, give thanks that God has called you to look after it for Him.” Nothing we have is truly ours. The call to follow Jesus means putting Him first and including Him in everything we do. This call is far from easy, but as we follow, so we discover that Jesus is alongside us too, as well as ahead of us. Occasionally, we stumble or fall, but as we look back, lo and behold, we discover He’s behind us as well, with open arms to catch us.
