Tom  Stoppard’s  Shakespeare  in  Love

Write one  well-‐structured,  cogent,  and  polished  essay,  two  to  four  pages  in  length,   determining  whether  the  characterization  of  Will  Shakespeare  is  more  comedic  or   tragic.  Which  of  these  monikers  would  you  argue  is  the  more  convincing  or   appropriate  to  describe  the  character’s  particular  problems,  worldview,  and   resolution  in  the  screenplay.  Be  sure  to  consider  whether  or  not  the  character   experiences  a  transformation,  the  degree  to  which  his  societal  context  guides  his   actions,  and  his  relationships  to  other  characters.  Use  textual  evidence  in  your  essay   (and,  if  desired,  feel  free  to  employ  facts  and/or  quotations  from  the  Bryson  book  in   your  response).  Use  the  correct  MLA  parenthetical  citation  formatting  for  your   quotation  citations.
