COMMODORE’S CORNER It’s August at the Club, and the Fun Continues!

I hope you and your family are taking every opportunity to enjoy your summer here at the Club. Judging by recent soldout events and the number of members who can be found enjoying our dining and activity venues, this is shaping up to be a blockbuster summer at GPYC. We have some outstanding events planned for August. First, be sure to attend the Fleet Review Family Night and the Harbor Lights Dock Parties on August 16. They are the kick-off to a fun-filled Fleet Review weekend. The traditional review will take place on the afternoon of August 17 followed by the Fleet Review Dinner. This year’s new summer event, Party Under the Stars, will take place on August 23. Be sure to reserve early for any summer events you wish to attend! While enjoying time at the Club this summer, I am sure you are aware Mother Nature has bestowed upon us record high water levels. Please excuse some of the puddles and mini lakes that have appeared in the parking lot and front drive. The Board is aware and making every effort to mitigate the situation, and club staff continues to work diligently to address problem areas as they appear. Love pizza? I am happy to report the new high capacity brick pizza oven has helped us to drastically reduce wait times with no reduction in quality. What better way to work up an appetite for all those pizzas than working out at our recently opened fitness center or one of Pete’s boot camps? Special thanks to Director Bruce Knapp, his committee and the Board for making this long overdue goal a reality at our Club. If you haven’t visited the Fitness Center, I encourage you to do so. I think you will be pleased with what you see. I hope you also take time to visit the Grog Shop and meet Emily and Leah. They are always ready with a smile and are working hard to find the right items for you. With the new awning up by the Grog shop, it’s the perfect place to enjoy a cup of coffee after you do some shopping. Soak up these final days of Summer,

Commodore Ilja Vreeken

NOTES FROM THE MANAGER Teamwork Makes the Dream Work The Grosse Pointe Yacht Club is known for many things – its picturesque setting, premier food/service offerings, and great camaraderie, to name a few. Those things are very visible to its members and the public and have earned it the “Iconic” designation by Distinguished Clubs and Boardroom Magazine. However, I would like to recognize some of the behind the scenes actors for their efforts this year. These members didn’t get any accolades or material gifts for what they did and continue to do. Their only reason for performing these duties was for the love of their Club. Most of you are very aware that the Great Lakes are breaking record high water levels, and Lake St. Clair is on that same trajectory. With the water levels being so high, the Club has faced flooding in the lower level, submerged electrical conduits, flooding in the parking lot/loading zones, and docks on the verge of being under water. A team of members and staff led by Steven Vreeken and Commodore Ilja Vreeken mobilized almost immediately in the Spring and have continuously assisted our Maintenance and Harbor departments in managing the water. They started in the spring building all new risers for Hickory Dock, Gas Dock, Moby Dock, Bridge Dock and East Wall Dock. They also rebuilt the Gas Dock Shed. They strategized and constructed pump systems for key areas in the lower level of the Club that were flooding. They joined Maintenance and Harbor Crews early in the mornings and late in the evenings in order to get the job done. It was neat to watch as it became contagious, and more and more members showed up to assist! Who would have thought such a challenging time would create such tight bonds and camaraderie between members and staff? When Boardroom Magazine visited our Club, they indicated that out of all the qualities they look for and evaluate, the “Intangible Quality” is the most heavily weighted. In other words, the “feeling” members and guests get when they are at the Club stemming from traditions, participation in events, etc. These challenging times have really accentuated our Intangible Qualities, and I am so proud to be a part of this team. Thank you to all the volunteer members and staff who make our Club so great! Smooth sailing,

Aaron Wagner

STAFF SPOTLIGHT Peter Wendzinski, Fitness Director By Aaron Wagner

The Fitness Center, which is slated to be open soon, will be run by our newly hired Fitness Director Peter Wendzinski. Peter is a Grosse Pointe native who discovered the benefits of healthy nutrition and good physical training at an early age through all the wonderful programs the community has to offer, from little league to high school sports. At Grosse Pointe South High School, he played hockey, soccer and lacrosse, and ran cross country. Peter learned that “he couldn’t perform at his best unless he trained at his best.” After spending 10 years in corporate marketing, a couple years ago he decided to pursue a career in his true passion, health and fitness. He has an impressive list of certifications, including National Academy of Sports Performance Trainer, Spinning Level One Instructor, Titleist Performance Institute Level One Trainer and TRX Instructor. Since then, Peter has been the fitness director at another local club and a conditioning coach at a sports performance gym. He caters each client’s workout to their specific capabilities and fitness goals and is honored to be the first ever Fitness Director at the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club.

L-R: Fitness Director Peter Wendzinski and Athletics Committee Chair Bruce Knapp in the former Accounting Office, which has now been converted to the Club's first Fitness Center.

“It is an honor to be your Fitness Director at the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club,” Peter said. “I have had the privilege of meeting and discussing with a handful of members about the different types of fitness classes they would like to see offered at the club. I am pleased to announce that we will be having regular high intensity boot camp classes and yoga classes. Once the gym opens, I will also be offering personal training services.” If you would like additional information about the Club’s fitness program, contact Peter at pwendzinski@gpyc.org.

MEMBERSHIP

MATTERS

Mobile App Provides Quick Access to Key Club Information At the GPYC, quality service is a top priority for the member experience. One way that we strive to better serve the members is through our GPYC mobile app. Once downloaded, the app allows you to access the roster, calendar of events (which you can sync to your phone calendar), electronic member card and to view and pay statements. The app also allows members to “Report Kudos or Problems” in various areas of the Clubhouse and grounds, by sending a quick message (and a photo if desired) to management. This will ensure that any issues are addressed promptly, and that any positive feedback is sent to staff.

The Harbor section lists an impressive list of “Full Concierge Signature Service.” These services include catering delivery, docking assistance, in-well pump outs, delivery of supplies from the Grog Shop and more.

Newly added: our Membership and Harbor sections on the app. If you have a friend or family member who is interested in joining the Club, simply click on the Membership section of the app for a little “cheat sheet” on a list of the Club’s many amenities, as well as the 2019 initiation fees and dues.

If you haven’t downloaded the app yet, I encourage you to do so, as it’s a great tool to have at your fingertips. See the “Did You Know?” article to the right for instructions on how to download the app and register.

Please stay tuned, as we will continue to add more features to the app. We will be adding an FAQs section to include information such as the attire policy, guest policy, pool rules, cell phone and electronics policy, WiFi passwords and more. We also anticipate to be using push notifications in the near future for certain Club communications.

HARBOR August may be upon us, but there is still plenty of beautiful weather ahead for the 2019 boating season. That’s why I want to remind everyone of the importance of the Club’s No Swimming Policy. At the GPYC, your safety is of the utmost importance. That's why we enforce a No Swimming policy in the harbor. You are at risk by entering the water near a boat or dock powered by electricity. If you see an individual in the water, please do not go in after them. Life rings with throw ropes are located at the fire extinguisher pedestals throughout the harbor. Also, please note that our Harbor Staff tests the water daily to monitor for electric voltage, in order to reduce the risk. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding. Also, while summer is still upon us, don’t forget to take advantage of the Concierge Signature Services. Examples

HAPPENINGS

of these service include vessel loading and unloading, docking assistance, inwell pump outs, delivery of Grog Shop supplies, catering delivery and more. An easy way to request these services is through the GPYC app. Simply click on Harbor, then call or email your request. Please note that your login information for the app is the same as the GPYC web site login. If you are having trouble logging into the app, please contact Communications Manager Anna Swartz at aswartz@gpyc.org. Also, just a friendly reminder: The Entrance Buoys are installed at our harbor entrance. Please keep the following in mind: -When leaving or entering the harbor, stay between the red and green buoys. At night, these buoys are lit with flashing red and green lights. -Buoys are a NO WAKE area: you must be at IDLE speed between buoys. -Boats leaving the harbor have the right of way.

11

-Cutting between buoys is not permitted for any boat or personal watercraft. As always, Harbor Master Alex Turner and I welcome your thoughts, concerns and comments. Safe Boating, Michael Meda Harbor Chairman michaelmeda@comcast.net
