Must visit: Kapiti Island

Kapiti Island sits proudly off the coast from Paraparaumu and is one of those places both locals and visitors alike will often sit and admire but don’t actually visit. Well Kapiti Tours and DOC have made it easy with daily trips leaving from Paraparaumu Beach (weather permitting). As one of a few accessible island nature reserves in NZ a visit to Kapiti provides an opportunity for people to observe birds that are either very rare or absent from the mainland altogether and to see the recovery of vegetation after intensive modification during last century. Following an intensive pest eradication program Kapiti is free of all pests that prey on our birdlife and forests and now hosts significant populations of the Little Spotted Kiwi, kakariki (redcrowned parakeet), robin, bellbird and saddleback and the prehistoric looking Takahe to name but a few. So whether you want to just sit and listen to the birdsong or explore further afield Kapiti is a place you won’t forget. So call 0800 Kapiti (0800 527 484) to book your visit or book all activities at the Paraparaumu i-site.

The Kapiti Coffee Company is part of the Coast’s growing group of gourmet food producers. Roasted in a uniquely kiwi style the individual origin flavours are preserved –“it’s about mind and heart -it’s a matter of feeling” says head roaster Corban Halcrow. Each origin batch of high altitude Arabica beans is individually roasted, aged ,blended and packaged. We deliver our coffee to our customers on the fourth day after roasting ensuring our customers get the best of the flavours and the shelf life in their own cupboards rather than on the supermarket shelf.
