Come on over!

Do you ever look out the window, notice a lot of cars in your neighbour’s driveway, and wonder what’s going on? Fall on Prince Edward Island is like that: a season-long party of dazzling colour, irresistible food, incredible music, and pure fun. Drama, comedy, musicals, ceilidhs, and festivals from one end of autumn to the other. The beaches are uncrowded and the golf courses are stunning. Did we mention that Travel & Leisure 2013 World’s Best Awards named us Top Island in Continental US and Canada? Yes, your neighbours on PEI are celebrating this glorious season. But there’s no mystery here, and you’re definitely invited! Book online at tourismpei.com or call us toll free 1-877-445-4949.

Prince Edward Island is a bountiful land surrounded by abundant seas. Most restaurants here strive to use local ingredients, so whether you prefer meat, dairy, seafood, or vegetarian choices, you’ll find a harvest of freshness. And with the Culinary Institute of Canada right here in Charlottetown, many of our chefs are home-grown too. September is Fall Flavours month, making it the perfect time to get a taste of the Island. It won’t be possible to get to all 60 of the events we have planned, but you’ll want to try anyway. Don’t miss the PEI International Shellfish Festival, Toe Taps & Taters, and Applelicious. There’s also a great line-up of Authentic PEI Experiences – such as Culinary Boot Camps – that will let you roll up your sleeves and catch, gather, and prepare everything you need to create your own gourmet meal. Space for some of these events is limited, so book early! Visit www.fallflavours.ca to find out about tickets and reservations.

Visitor tip

Michael Smith, Food Network Celebrity Chef, Food Network Host, award-winning author, nutritional activist will be here for the PEI International Shellfish Festival this fall!

These events are large enough that there’s always LOTS going on, yet small enough that you’re never far from the action. The sights, sounds and engaging personalities of Sponsor our Food Network guest hosts make Fall Flavours Signature Events an experience you’ll savour for years to come. And what a celebrity lineup it is! www.fallflavours.ca FOOD NETWORK is a trademark of Television Food Network G.P.; used with permission

Corbin Tomaszeski

As a credited Executive Chef, Corbin has overseen the expansion of many different food service outlets in a career that spans more than two decades. In addition to being the co-host of Food Network Canada’s Dinner Party Wars, Corbin is currently working on a range of projects that include his very own cookbook, three new restaurants and a full-service catering and consulting business. Corbin is currently one of the hosts on Food Network Canada’s Restaurant Takeover.

Lynn Crawford

As Executive Chef of the Four Seasons Hotel Manhattan, she was the only female executive chef for Four Seasons worldwide, and received accolades in the international media. She was also the only Canadian female chef to have ever been invited to battle in the kitchen stadium of the popular series Food Network series, Iron Chef America. Lynn’s current series, Pitchin’ In, is currently in its third season on Food Network Canada.

Chuck Hughes

In 2006, Chuck and his friends opened Garde Manger in Montreal. In 2009, Chuck invited the world into his restaurant’s kitchen with his Food Network Canada series, Chuck’s Day Off. Then in 2011, he added Le Bremner to his repertoire. Chuck became the youngest Canadian Chef to win on Food Network’s Iron Chef America. In his most recent series, Chuck’s Week Off, Chuck heads to Mexico, looking for culinary adventures in an open-air jeep.

Mark McEwan

In his early years, Mark McEwan served as Canada’s youngest ever executive chef at Toronto’s upscale Sutton Place Hotel. Since then, he has led the restaurant scene in Toronto with North 44, Bymark, ONE and Fabbrica. Then in 2009, he opened McEwan at The Shops at Don Mills. Mark McEwan has also added television personality to his long list of talents and is currently the head judge on Food Network Canada’s Top Chef Canada.

She pursued her passion for cooking at Johnson & Wales University in Vail, Colorado. Anna shifted into television as the host of Sugar on Food Network Canada, then went on to host Kitchen Equipped, Fresh with Anna Olson, and her latest series Bake with Anna Olson.

John Catucci

John Catucci is a talented actor-singer-comedian. His love for the stage began at York University, where he teamed up with David Mesiano and formed the musical comedy duo The Doo Wops. John has guest-starred a number of times on Global TV’s Train 48 and is a series regular on the CBC children’s show The Doodlebops. He is currently the hilarious host of Food Network Canada’s You Gotta Eat Here!

Michael Smith

Chef Michael Smith is the host of Food Network Canada’s Chef Michael’s Kitchen, Chef Abroad, Chef at Home and Chef at Large. He is Prince Edward Island’s food ambassador, an award-winning cookbook author, newspaper columnist, professional chef and home cook. He led the team of chefs that cooked for the world’s Olympians in the Whistler Athletes Village in 2010. His sixth cookbook, Fast Flavours, is a smash hit across Canada.

Massimo Capra

Born near Cremona, Italy, Massimo spent several years in various hotels in Italy before moving to Toronto to work at Archer’s, a family-owned restaurant. He is the Chef and co-owner of Mistura Restaurant, which opened in 1997. The exclusive Sopra Upper Lounge is the latest addition to Massimo’s list, becoming a favourite among many of Toronto’s live-music lovers since 2006. Massimo is currently one of the chef-hosts on Food Network Canada’s Restaurant Takeover.

Some call it the shoulder season– those months from September through November when the crowds have dwindled and the sun sets a little earlier in the evening. That’s certainly true here, but the fun that started back in the spring and continued through the summer is still going strong. Accommodations are available at reduced rates and many retail stores have lowered prices, too. That means an already-affordable PEI vacation is even more affordable in the fall. You can get here in a matter of hours, ready to enjoy a culinary masterpiece, world-class golf, top-notch theatre, gorgeous beaches, and plenty of great shopping. And because it’s the shoulder season, you’ll still be smiling long after you’ve arrived back home. Visitor tip

We’re open for business this fall! A quick search online will display the businesses open in the off season. See peifallescapes.com.

It means to make young again, to reinvigorate. The very sound of the word is filled with exuberance and happy energy. And here’s the strange part: Rejuvenation can happen even when you’re not looking for it. Spend even just a few days on Prince Edward Island, and you’ll feel it begin to stir. You may be out for a casual stroll down a red-clay lane, but your spirit will be skipping thirty feet ahead. Given a choice between a quick ride in the car or a longer, more scenic bicycle tour, you’ll take the bike. And suddenly, kayaking, horseback riding, hiking, golf, deep-sea fishing, and maybe even parasailing all seem like good ideas. Try an Authentic PEI Experience (www.tourismpei.com/pei-experiences). Take your time, and don’t forget to soak in the scenery, and a little history, too. A double-feature at the drive-in would be a perfect way to end the day. That’s what rejuvenation feels like. No matter how much our technology advances, there are things we just can’t replicate on a screen. Cool autumn air, for example, and the warmth of an early October sun. Standing in an orchard and biting into a crisp apple that we just picked. Seeing again – for the first time – the wondrous colours blanketing the tree-covered hills. Skimming a canoe across placid blue waters, or strolling the line where ocean meets shore. Exploring the magical woods at Green Gables. Biking the uncrowded Confederation Trail. Flying a kite in one of 25 provincial parks, or spotting a bird we’ve never seen before. It’s impossible to count the reasons for spending time outdoors. But whatever moves you to go outside, you’re sure to find it on Prince Edward Island this fall.
