2 Cap aux Meules Island South-east Sector

In this sector, you will probably see lots of sea birds like the Black guillemot: plumage - black with white wing patches; bright red legs. This bird nests on almost all the cliffs from May to June. The Black guillemot is monogamous and returns to the same nesting site year after year. You will see them on the red sandstone cliffs, sitting on their eggs or A. Richard feeding their single offspring. Like all birds, the Black guillemot will fly away when humans approach the nest, leaving the egg or the chick vulnerable. It is important to keep your distance so that nesting birds are disturbed as little as possible.

Nautical charts : 4950, 4951, 4956 Water surface defined as : zone 3 Respect small craft warnings. Make sure to check weather conditions and tide times before your departure. There is a lot of commercial traffic in the port at Cap aux Meules. Always be very careful when approaching the dock. Several ferry and excursion boats operate in the port.

Navigation GROS-CAP Park at Gros-Cap (CAM6) – Baie Sud (CAM8) Level : Moderate 11 km This astounding rocky prominence has earned its reputation! Gros Cap’s network of tunnels and grottoes is a perfect example of the incessant, relentless assault of the sea on the land.

BELLE ANSE Beach / Plage de l’Hôpital (CAM1) – L’Étang du Nord Cove - La Côte Site (CAM3) Level : Demanding 11,5 km Go on a discovery trip and explore this unique coastal environment with its succession of hollowed-out cliffs, caves, stone columns and arches rising out of the sea. Relatively sheltered from SE, E, NE winds.

Nautical charts : 4950, 4951 Water surface defined as : zone 3 Respect small craft warnings. Make sureto check weatherconditions and tidetimes beforeyour departure.

There is no exit point along this section. As the summer progresses, the North-westerly wind will produce higher and higher seas along the north shore because of the fetch and the wind's strength.

Itinerary

There is no place to take shelter or land between the Cap aux Maquereaux and the chemin du Phare (CAM2). Beware of the surf.

5 La Grosse Île

The dune protects the archipelago. We must protect it. The dune is the first line of defence that prevents waves from rolling onto the land. Without the dunes, storm surge would flood inland. Dune grass (Ammophila ligulata), with its extensive root system, holds the dune in place, allows it to retain its shape. Foot traffic flattens and kills the vegetation essential to maintaining the dunes, making it easy for the wind to open breaches in the dunes. Walkways and designated access paths have been created to help protect the integrity of the dunes.

Nautical charts : 4950, 4952 Water surface defined as : zone 3 Respect small craft warnings. Make sure to check weather conditions and tide times before your departure. When winds blow from the North East. Breaking waves over numerous reefs and shoals. Navigation can be extremely difficult. When the wind blows from the north-west, the north and the northeast with an ebbing tide. Breaking waves over numerous reefs and shoals.
