I

always get in a fight with my son this time of year.

He’s a firm believer that fall is the best season of the year, whereas I have made it clear on many occasions in this very letter that there is no time like the summer.

“The weather is perfect,” he will say. “All the family holidays, the leaves changing on the trees, it’s all just beautiful.”

To this day, I still question whether someone made a switcheroo at the hospital and if this kid is even mine.

As a person who likes to see the glass half full (as long as it has wine in it), I’ll listen to him this year. I have to admit that those few fall-like weeks in August with 70 degrees and zero humidity during the nights were pretty perfect. I guess I’ll keep him after all.

One thing I can’t argue with about fall, though, is the amazing fashion. We worked with Boutique 811 in Franklin Lakes, a beautiful little shop right next to the Market Basket, to see all of the latest in fall fashions. We chose some standout items, threw them on some lovely ladies, and sent them across the street to Indian Trails Club for an unbelievable photo shoot that had me wanting to buy every single item. Unfortunately, Steven brought me back down to Earth!

While it’s easy during the coming months to gain back those pounds you worked so hard to knock off in the months leading up to summer, we think Labor Day marks a good time for pre-New Year’s resolutions, or just brushing up and remembering those of the previous year. That’s why we traded in our sandals for sneakers and joined HNH Fitness, a gym only a couple of years old that offers a compelling mix of health first fitness. Though that may sound redundant, many gyms are overlooking physical capabilities and limits in return for quick results, which often leads to serious injury. Getting in shape is only great if you can enjoy it!

And we love our homegrown stories from homegrown people. Throw clothing into the mix, and it’s truly our dream. We sent one of our writers over to Gypsy Warrior in Ridgewood to hear how co-owners Nicla DiCosmo and Michel Bezoza are transforming their small boutique into a thriving online enterprise, which now boasts more than 635,000 followers and continues growing.

One of my new favorites is our BC Eats section, which highlights the many new and exciting restaurants popping up at an ever-increasing rate all over Bergen County. Directions: Place ginger slices, lemon juice, cinnamon syrup and Tequila Anejo into a cocktail shaker and fill with cubed ice. Add Indio beer and stir to combine; garnish with lemon discs or shaved ginger.

Shake hard and strain over ice into a chilled coupe glass. In a separate shaker, place the heavy cream and cubed ice; shake hard to aerate then pour carefully over a bar spoon to layer the cream over the coffee.

Garnish with 3 coffee beans.

Grapefruit Inferno 1 ½ oz. Mezcal 1 ½ grapefruit juice (fresh) ½ oz. fresh ginger syrup 5 dashes of Hell Fire Bitters 2 oz. Bohemia Directions: Build cocktail in a Collins glass and stir. Garnish with Jalapeño slices.

It’s all well and good to know all the sub-appellations in Mendocino County or the best Bordeaux vintages, but what good is all that knowledge if you don’t enjoy the wine? Wine has always been created, first and foremost, to be drunk among friends. As fall approaches, outdoor drinking opportunities abound. Enjoy!

Sequin Rosé (California)

Noble Vines 181 Merlot (Lodi, CA)

A “delicately bubbled” rosé, this frizzante has just the right amount of sweetness for a crisp evening on the deck or in the hot tub. Cold fermentation and stainless steel aging ensures a low-acid, low-alcohol, light-bodied wine with a clean finish and a hint of sweetness. Notes of elderberry, plum, red grape and citrus are enhanced with a light carbonation.

Pair with grilled prawns with mango salsa, soft goat cheese with pepper, or grapes and sliced apples. $14

Delicato Family Vineyards has created this collection of wines to reflect the high-quality root stock they harvest on family farms in Lodi and Monterray, both rising star regions in the California wine scene. Winemaker James Ewart, an Australian who has harvested in New Zealand and South America before taking his current position, monitors the process for vine to bottle. This classic Bordeaux-style Merlot boasts notes of blackberry and cherry on the nose, with a fruit forward palate of plum, cherry and spice. Pair with grilled lamb and fresh corn. $15

Arteis & Co Champagne Brut Rosé 2007 This new micro-cuvee Champagne release is only available in top restaurants right now, but expect to see it become more prevalent. CEO Fabien Gay, who has worked at many of the major Champagne houses, says he has sought out “first-rate artisans who grow the best vines, which give the best musts.” The results are four unusually complex, elegant and entertaining wines. The 2007 Brut Rosé is a blend of 50% Grand Crus and 50% Premiers Crus (Chardonnay/Pinot Noir), aged for six years. It pairs beautifully with sea bass with a mango chutney, or strawberry compote. (about $200 per bottle in restaurants)

Gnarly Head Pinot Noir 2012 (California) The label, with its orange-and-brown twisted vines, just screams fall and smoky campfires. Or tailgating party or backyard grill. Sometimes Pinot Noir can be light and over fruity. Not in this case. A large crop and late warm weather in 2012 provided gradually ripened grapes with bright acid and solid tannins. The result is a powerful and nicely balanced red with notes of black cherry, tobacco, hazelnut and vanilla with round tannins and a medium body; it’s surprisingly tasty for its price.

Pair with BBQ pork ribs or chicken stuffed with sausage, herbs and red bell pepper. $10

Smartphone!

Sometimes, using a smartphone isn’t such a wise thing after all.

L

ife is to be enjoyed in the moment, not photographed.

I’m always struck when seeing pictures of an amazing occurrence or tragic disaster. What I see in the images are dozens of hands held up, grasping smartphones. Few people are actually watching what is happening.

For heaven’s sake, folks, you are there at an important moment. Watch it. Absorb it. Or is it more important to you to take pictures, post them, and then brag that you were there? Are you all so insecure that you need affirmation from others—even strang-

ers—in order to validate yourself?

Many years ago, when my then-husband was a soldier in Germany, I joined him there and we traveled extensively. When we returned after two years and showed our photo album, some people said, “Are those all the pictures you took?”

Our reply: “We were too busy looking to take many pictures.”

I sometimes think that this need for public affirmation is tied to the so-called “self-esteem” movement (trophies for everyone, and all that nonsense). In my day, self-esteem was earned! Someone said, “This is what I want you to do. This is how you do it. I know you can do it.” And we did it. And felt genuine self-esteem.

I wonder if today’s young people, con-

stantly told they are wonderful even when they have done nothing, secretly suspect, in a clandestine corner of their minds, that they really haven’t accomplished anything and thus aren’t really all that special. Maybe that’s part of what fuels their almost desperate need for public self-affirmation. Feedback from others substituting for a grounded sense of self.

But back to the smartphones. It’s not just the photos; it’s the constant texting and e-mails, while life is going on around you. Open your eyes! There’s so much to see, so much to absorb. Instead, you isolate yourself in a private world. Sometimes, on the subway on my way to work, I want to smack a mother with kids. While they are restless, bored and unhappy, she’s busy texting or reading on her gadget. I want to tell her, “Talk to your kids! Amuse them. Enjoy them before they grow up to be strangers.”

I’ve even seen them so busy on their smartphones that they let their kids, as little as three years old, go on the escalator or through a revolving store door without watching them. (I’ve rescued more than one kid who nearly got mashed by a revolving door.)

Don’t get me wrong. Smartphones are good in their place. But when they take over your life and crowd out every other human experience, they are a menace!

This new Montvale eatery wants to keep it organic, local and tasty.

ony Santarelli and his team want to create a revolution with Food Evolution. The founder of the new Montvale eatery, Santarelli has an ambitious goal— saving the world from blah-tasting and badfor-you food, one fresh meal at a time.

“Food Evolution was created based on the belief that our culture is ready for craveable food that’s not only good for us, but good for the world,” Santarelli says. “We believe the time is right for Food Evolution.

As one of our guests eloquently asked, ‘Why is it so hard to find food this good using best in class ingredients?’”

Santarelli’s answer is Food Evolution, and the proof is on the palate. “Fresh and minimally processed should be the basis of our items. A tomato should be a tomato, not something that looks like one and has no taste,” Santarelli notes.

Enhancing the customer experience is a main ingredient in Santarelli’s recipe for success. “I love to give out samples of our products so our guests can get a taste of what else we can do and explore flavors they otherwise might not venture near,” notes Santarelli, who believes customer education and satisfaction are crucial to getting his message of a healthy way of eating out into the community. French Toast with Baked Cinnamon Apples Ingredients: 4 slices of Balthazar Bakery’s thick-cut Pain de Mie Bread 3 organic large brown eggs 1/3 c. organic whole milk 1/2 tsp. organic pure vanilla extract 2 tbsp. organic sugar 1 tsp. ground cinnamon 4 tbsp. organic salted butter

Preparation: Mix squash and pumpkin cubes in a large bowl. Add agave and maple syrups and toss until squash and pumpkin are well coated. Sprinkle cinnamon, nutmeg, salt and pepper and toss. Place mixture in a casserole dish. Bake in a preheated 375⁰ oven until squash is tender and sauce has thickened (approximately 45 to 55 minutes).

Topping: 1 Organic Pink Lady Apple or your favorite fall apple, cored and sliced thin 1 tbsp. organic sugar 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon Preparation: Toss apple slices with sugar and cinnamon. Bake on a sheet pan in a preheated 350⁰ oven until apples are tender and caramelized (approximately 15 minutes). In a bowl, whisk together eggs, milk and vanilla extract. In a small cup, mix sugar and cinnamon and reserve. Heat a nonstick frying pan on medium high heat and add butter. Soak bread slices in egg mixture and place in frying pan. Cook until golden brown and then flip over. Sprinkle cinnamon sugar mixture across tops of bread slices. Remove from pan once both sides are golden and sugar coated. Cut bread slices in half diagonally and top with apple mixture.

the Food Evolution concept with family and community firmly in mind. After the birth of his daughter, Ava, he and his wife, Shelley, searched in vain for area restaurants cooking with healthy ingredients they felt comfortable feeding to their daughter, and that she’d actually find appetizing. Aiming to nourish their own child and other children in their community, they set about meticulously researching local farmers and bakers, testing and fine-tuning recipes, and building an eco-conscious work team.

Opening Food Evolution in May 2014 was a defining moment for Santarelli. “Trying to create sustainable quick-serve food felt like an uphill battle more than once,” he admits, “but getting to feed our community delicious meals with ingredients I’m proud to feed my daughter make it all worth it.”

Part quick-serve burger joint, part farm-to-table restaurant and part health bistro, Food Evolution seeks to develop a new vision and path in the industry.

Whether its the welcoming décor featuring reclaimed barn-wood tables and walls, their local organic produce, or the plant-based cleaning products and “green” serving items, every aspect of the brand is designed to create a sustainable, environmentally friendly experience.

Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week, Food Evolution carries only grass-fed burgers, fresh local and organic sides, organic fruit smoothies, fair trade coffee, and organic sandwiches, bowls, wraps and frozen yogurt.

After an ingredient meets their strict quality standards—no GMOs, hormones, antibiotics, pesticides, etc.—the Food Evolution team, led by chef Larry Green, works on ways to showcase the natural flavors.

“It’s so much fun working with fresh ingredients. It all comes down to simple, unadorned food where the flavors speak for themselves. I concentrate on the natural ingredients, making them the stars,” says Green. For example, his roasted veggies contain just a hint of balsamic fig dressing so that the organic veggies, bursting with natural, unprocessed goodness, stand out as the main event that dazzles your taste buds.

“At the end of the day it’s all about how many people are loving your food.

Seeing them enjoy what we produce is the highest satisfaction I can get,” notes Green, who uses local seasonal offerings as the staples that inspire his menu.

“I would definitely go back,” says Christina Rotolo. She and her mother, Maria, both of River Vale, recently went for lunch. After getting some friendly ordering advice from the knowledgeable counter staff, the pair ordered a chicken club wrap and Thai chicken wrap, respectively. Christina, a self-described foodie, had this to say: “Both were delicious, but I thought the chicken club had a better flavor and texture variety between the mayo, sweet balsamic, smooth tomato and crunchy bacon. The Thai wrap was overall crunchy, with the carrots, cucumbers and baked Chinese noodles. The truffle fries were excellent. I loved the fact that they were baked, and the truffle oil gave them a really earthy taste. Mixed with the Parmesan and herbs, it was a great side dish.”

Even the pricier cost of the meal didn’t diminish their appetites or appreciation. “The price was higher-end,” Christina notes, “but seeing as there are always hidden costs to the consumer, it seemed like a fair price for an organic and free-range meal. I could taste that all of the ingredients were fresh.

“I thought the food was good quality and good for the environment, since either most or all of the food was listed as certified organic,” she continues.

“Overall, I had a good experience at Food Evolution and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who hasn’t tried their food.”

And such reviews are just what the Food Evolution team is working to continue to earn each and every day with each and every dish they serve. As Santarelli puts it: “After eating our food, we want you to think: That was delicious, I feel great, and I cannot wait to spread the word.”

Even though the burger craze may seem a little stale by now, Habit Burger hopes to prove that—until now—you haven’t tasted the best. Ranked as the best burger by Consumer Reports, Habit Burger comes rolling into town surrounded by a lot of excitement. After a week of soft opening charity events, they are now open to the public and releasing their freshly ground, never frozen chargrilled patties on the world, or at least, right now, Fair Lawn and very soon, River Edge.

Habit Burger doesn’t look or feel like your standard fast food burger joint. With each burger made to order using quality ingredients, the one time small Burger Joint started in Santa Barbara hasn’t strayed from their roots or processes since they opened back in 1969.

Expect some cool twists on their burgers that you won’t see at any ole fast food joint. For example, their Teriyaki Charburger is served with lettuce, tomato, caramelized onions, mayo, pickles, and most importantly, pineapple, all tucked neatly into a toasted bun.

For those less burger minded and looking for healthier alternatives, Habit Burger’s array of fresh options include the Santa Barbara Cobb salad and the Chargrilled Chicken sandwich, which is served on a toasted French roll, grilled sourdough or wheat bun.

Your standard French fries and onion rings are joined by sweet potato fries and side salads to perfectly balance your meal, and the menu is reasonably priced.

Shakes, malts, cones and sundaes round out the dessert section, because there is no better habit than getting a shake and fries with your juicy top ranked burger.

The owners, who also run Charitto’s in Hoboken and Weehawken, will provide a different take on Mexican cuisine in Paloma Negra. The two-floor space features bars on each floor, plus another bar at its outdoor patio, perfect for a warming tequila on a chilly autumn night.

The full menu is a mix of traditional Mexican flavors and dishes. This includes a selection of appetizers and other dishes to share (quesadillas, tostadas and taquizas) with various Mexican plates featuring meats and seafood as main courses with a more upscale flair. One unique item: the Trompitos de Arrachera: Savory Grilled Arrachera (skirt steak) slices served gyro style and sliced at your table for individual taco servings, complete with salsa and grilled onions.

While the bar’s focus is on tequila and tequila cocktails, other alcohol and nonalcoholic beverages, such as horchata—a delicious Mexican drink made with milk, rice, cinnamon and vanilla—is available. Bottle service for the tequila and mezcal is also being offered, along with private lockers to keep your favorite bottles for yourself and your guests. Bottles can be purchased any time or at one of Paloma Negra’s planned monthly tastings. Upon return visits, drinks will be made using your bottle for mixers at $4-$5 each or “straight- up” free of charge.

Holy Cow Sliders, the takeout burger restaurant that took the place of El Caney in Bergenfield, opened up this summer with a big bang and mini burgers.

The signature sliders (75/25 ground chuck) are 1.3 oz. patties served with caramelized onions, pickles, ketchup and mustard (any ingredient can be removed) on Martin’s potato rolls. There are four burger varieties: hamburger, cheeseburger, chipotle burger and chipotle cheeseburger. Chipotle burgers are served with chipotle mayonnaise and jalapeños. “Classic” cheeseburgers are topped with American; chipotle cheeseburgers are topped with pepper jack.

The menu is rounded out with a hot dog―available plain or “all the way” (chili, onions, cheese)―with Jersey Shore Fries: fresh-cut, boardwalk-style, and onion rings as sides. Sodas offerings will only include those that use natural cane sugar; no high fructose corn syrup here.

The small space, designed mostly as a takeout spot, will have 6 counter seats and is open 6 days a week (closed Sundays). With the slogan “Bigger may be better, but tiny is so much more tastier,” Holy Cow looks to change the way we taste the big bad burger.

Glaze Donuts, a homemade doughnut and artisan coffee shop, has opened in New Milford. Owner Jule Hazou has been in various food businesses his whole life. Tired of processed donuts full of chemicals, he opened Glaze Donuts as his first take on a donut shop.

The donuts are all made fresh multiple times a day, from scratch. Hazou is using all natural ingredients, with no preservatives, and then frying them in a zero trans-fat shortening. The donuts are house recipes, including 10 varieties of glazed and numerous specialty/premium flavors that will rotate on a daily basis, something that’s sure to excite his already growing customer base and keep them coming back. Premium flavors have so far included Maple Bacon, already a buzzed-about favorite, and Aztec Chocolate. Gluten-free options are set to appear on the menu some time in the early fall.

Other baked goods will include a selection of muffins, plus croissants imported from France that will then be baked in house. Also on the menu are homemade crepes, with breakfast, savory lunch and sweet dessert options.

For his coffee drinks, Hazou has elected to use Peet’s Coffee, the specialty coffee roaster from San Francisco. This includes all espresso drinks, both hot and cold. According to Hazou, Glaze Donuts will be the first New Jersey retailer to actually serve the company’s coffee (other New Jersey retailers with Peet’s just sell the beans).

Glaze Donuts will be open 7 days a week; it shares a large parking lot with other businesses that do not open early, so parking should never be a hassle.

Owner Charles Hamade has brought his Mediterranean-style pizzeria back to town after a nearly two-year hiatus. Also back is Chef Philipo, manning the pizza oven (gas) that will run at a toasty 800 degrees to cook a pie to perfection in just three minutes.

This time around Hamade is focusing heavily on his ingredients, with a highlight on local and organic specifically: local free-range chicken from Goffle Farms, nitratefree pepperoni, organic eggs from Big Dog Farm, and more. The pizzas, in keeping with U Pie tradition, will continue to be 10-inch personal sized, with the usual U Pie toppings (vegetables and proteins). This time around, though, a raw seafood bar that includes clams oysters can top your pie. They can also be ordered separately. To build your own pie, you’re starting at about $6.95.

San Marzano tomatoes are being used for the sauce, and mozzarella is made in house. The previous “white” dough will be offered, with an added sourdough as an option. For those interested—and we know there are plenty of you—there will be a glutenfree crust as well.

The other dishes on the menu, dubbed “U Plates,” will host an array of pastas and salads. Everything here will also be customizable, with different sides, toppings and more.

The new space is almost directly across the street from Charles’ old space. It’s a 1500-square foot room with approximately 20 seats. They’ll be open 7 days a week, offering dine-in, takeout and delivery.

Owned by Damiano Pascali (Tre Voci in Ridgewood) and Anthony Volpe, the casual Italian restaurant features a fully renovated dining room, bar and outdoor area. Pascali and Volpe were looking to fill the void of a “family place” with “competitively priced” portions, where everyone could feel comfortable. With entrée prices that rarely climb above the $22 mark, they’ve done just that.

The menu features many Italian staples like homemade soups and pastas, as well as whole wheat and gluten free options, and weekly specials. Chef Alberto mans the kitchen. He has been with Pascali 22 years from early days at Romans in New Milford and Tre Voci. A bar menu includes a few smaller bites and sandwiches, perfect for nibbling on while watching a game or two by the bar. Pascali is also eager to mention they’ll cater the menu to you. Since they make everything to order―it even says it on the menu―as long as they have the ingredients, they’ll happily make it for you. How’s that for making you feel at home?

The bar, which features all concrete countertops, was designed around the wine menu, which includes around 9 bottles priced at $15 or less. There are 5 beers on tap with a selection of 15 more by the bottle, both foreign and domestic. They’re adding specialty cocktails and a frozen drink machine as well, which should be available soon.

The entire room’s 3200-square-foot space has been made airier by the removal of the wall separating the bar and dining room. The inside seats 100, while they can seat another 50 outside. They are open 6 days (closed Mondays) for lunch and dinner with weekday happy hour and live music expected shortly.

Take time to enjoy simple things that come your way. Open your eyes and ears; someone who totally gets you and is right in front of your nose is sending you a message. Try and avoid the nonsense. If you find you’re being emotional, try and go with it . Blame the eclipse, the moon or the planets, but expect the unexpected. At the end of the day, close your eyes to meditate or pray. Someone is sending you a message; relax and allow yourself to receive it.

Breathing deeply, keeping busy, and laughing with family and friends somehow alter your mood. Keep your head high. Focus on happy thoughts!

Last Laugh

What goes up, must fall down

sometimes get tired writing about the seasons. Just kidding, I don’t. It’s like they say, when you don’t know what to talk about, talk about the weather.

I think so far this year, though, the weather has actually been worth talking about. Let’s face it; it’s lighter than any story you hear on the real news, which you may not even hear if you watch, well, what we used to know as “the news” (i.e., the major networks).

Don’t get me wrong. I don’t mind sitting down at 10AM and listening to Kathie Lee and Hoda blabber on about how cute puppies are, but what happened to the hard-hitting stories that the news once provided us? Yes, we get one or two topical lead stories about how the world is coming to an end, but then they’re followed by those cute puppies again. Man, they are just so darn cute, though!

The rise and predicted fall of network news is nothing new. It’s interesting that there are now shows such as The Newsroom that have to show us what a real news show 138

actually is, which for any of its viewers under the age of 30, seems pretty foreign. We went from Walter Cronkite being “the most trusted man in America” to not being able to trust any of those gold-digging bachelors on The Bachelorette in pretty much the same time slot!

Hard news and cutthroat journalism have been replaced by fluff and entertainment. Tragic stories anywhere from Ferguson, Missouri, to the Middle East and Eastern Europe are easily trumped in importance and viewer ratings by the networks’ Summer Concert Series. Yes, I’d rather escape in music than hear about tragedy, but at some point, we have to face the real music here: the world is in economic, geological and political turmoil, all of which has repercussions that will last much longer than the career of Robin Thicke. (After his 2013 Song of the Summer, he pretty much blurred the lines of what constitutes a successful pop career. Remember his 2014 hit?

I don’t either.)

Of course, network news was once

one of two options for receiving your news, and now we have what seems like millions.

However, what network news once had— that only newspapers could compare with— was the trust of viewers to break down the news, making each small event seem like it was large, because often times, it contained circumstances beyond our understanding.

Nowadays, for one reason or another, there aren’t many people we can trust on TV, and that saddens me, since it still remains one of our most engaging forms of media.

You may say it’s hypocritical that I’ve chosen to write what many would consider a fluff piece (i.e., Last Laugh) as the outlet for my thoughts on the world. My intention here, and it doesn’t always translate perfectly, is to provide a thought provoking yet sometimes snarky view of the world. Some will laugh, some will cry, but hopefully, many will get to thinking.
