Meet The Team Phyllis Pometta Founder & Editor-in-Chief Another summer has come to an end and we are now saying good-bye to our little ones as they head off to school for another year. The kids are getting older {but we aren’t, right?}, so that means new clothes, new shoes, new supplies…the list is endless! We have put this issue together to help you find unique {and earth friendly} products for you and your child. Products that we have included this year come from a wide variety of sources. We have spend hours combing the web, searching stores in hopes of helping you find some products that you may not have seen otherwise. A special thank you goes out to all the companies that are featured. Without your talent, your innovative mind, and your passion, shopping for school supplies wouldn’t have been this much fun! All of us here at Tots To Teens Magazine wish you a wonderful Back to School season! We will see you at Christmas, just in time for holiday shopping!

12 Steps To Good Study Habits Helping your child to develop good study habits is one of the best gifts you can give him or her. Good study habits translate into real learning, good grades and better job prospects. Don't wait for college to start teaching your children good study habits; children can start ! as early as first grade. learning Step 1 - Require Reading If you can read, you can learn anything. Pre-readers love to be read to. Older children can read to younger children. Parents and children can take turns reading aloud. Read short excerpts at the dinner table. Read at bedtime. Give yourself some "quiet time" and have the kids read for 20 minutes or more a day.

Step 2 - Write, Write, Write Good communications skills are a must in any business and all areas of life. Younger children can color and draw pictures. Journaling can start as soon as children learn to write letters and small words. Set a time daily for journaling or writing on any topic of their choice. Keep it short and correct spelling and grammar errors. Writing will actually improve as children continue to read better written material.

Step 3 - Don't Be Overly Helpful Don't do your child's homework for him or her. So many parents think they are helping their children by doing their projects for them. It may make me proud that my son won first place at the science fair, but if I did most (or even a little) of the work on his project myself, what did he really win? Much less learn? Be available for suggestions and assistance, but insist that your children do the actual work themselves.

Step 4 - Sensory Deprivation Turn off the television, computer, video games and other gadgets. It's true, soft, classical music can enhance concentration, but loud noises will distract.

Step 5 - Offer Small Rewards Dangle the carrot. A child who is not enthusiastic about math, will likely apply himself to his assignment if he knows he will get to go play with his friends after he is done with it. (Mom or dad makes sure he actually did it and did it properly!)

Step 6 - Flash Cards Math facts, vocabulary words, historical facts, science definitions, can all be written on flash cards. Have the student make his own. That way he will be using more of his senses to learn: writing out the flash cards, reviewing them silently, and reciting them aloud.

Step 7 - Integrate Studies Into Daily Life How often have you heard (or said) "but I don't use algebra, history (insert subject) in my daily life". Show your child how to use what she's learning. Shopping equals math opportunity. Halving or doubling a recipe can cover fractions, decimals, algebra, as well as basic math operations. History - attend a reenactment. Better yet, talk about past and possible situations. For instance - last time we went to the restaurant we spent 20 minutes walking around looking for the bathroom, then finding our table again. Next time, let's try asking the waitress to point it out to us and see what happens.

Step 8 - Expect Perfection I'm not talking about "perfectionism" here. I mean do not settle for sloppy, lazy or incorrect work. Children are perfectly capable of neatness. It may take a bit more time, but for effective communication, neatness in writing is essential. Laziness must be eradicated. Most mistakes are the result of carelessness, not paying attention, or laziness in reading directions. Most incorrect work will be remedied by careful attention to the problem or instructions.

Step 9 - Encourage Diligence To stamp out laziness, encourage diligence. Diligent: industrious; showing painstaking effort (Webster's Standard Dictionary). What an intoxicating sense of accomplishment comes to a child, when he has put forth a painstaking effort to do his best work and is recognized for it. Industriousness seems to have gone out of fashion. "Work smart, not hard", we are told by business gurus. Well, without somebody's hard work, the smart ones aren't going to get anywhere. So encourage your child to work hard AND smart. She will accomplish more, in less time, with better results.

Step 10 - Strenuous Exercise Children are bursting with energy. Their minds cannot think when their bodies need to run. Strenuous exercise burns off excess energy and releases endorphins, enabling your child to relax and concentrate. Before school starts, and before doing her homework, have your child do something strenuous. For athletes, it's easy - run, bicycle, and skate. Play on the swing set. Walk the dog. Better yet, do some of these activities with your child. After 15 or 30 minutes, you'll both not only feel better, but also be ready to focus on work and school.

Step 11 - Cut Out Sugar Try this experiment. Cut out all prepared foods containing sugar for one week. This includes "junk" foods such as cookies, cakes and sodas; "convenience" foods such as sugary cereals, frozen dinners, juices made from concentrate. Read your labels and cut out corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup and artificial sweeteners as well. Substitute real foods: water, fruits, vegetables, meats, milk and cheese, and whole grains like rice and bread (not soda crackers or chips). Allow your family to fill up on these foods for that week, especially fruits and vegetables. After the initial mutiny, see if you notice any difference in temperaments, attitudes and health. If not, add the sugar back in all at once and see if you notice anything. If you do notice an improvement with the sugarfree diet, by all means continue it, and boost your family's health, intelligence and well-being.

Step 12 - Routine Children need the security of routine. We all need to be able to "know" what comes next. We will get up, work out, shower, have breakfast and go to school or work. We will come home, have a snack, take a walk, do our homework, eat dinner (as a family), and relax before bed. We will play hockey twice a week. We will clean the house on Saturday.

Good study habits translate into good work habits. Train your child, one step at a time. Train yourself, for better production. Train together for a closer relationship. Above all, do it with love and you can't go wrong. Robyn Dolan is a former Real Estate Broker-turned full-time mom, writer and crafter.
