Welcome to the 2017 Beech Tree Connection!

During my 22 year association with IDS, as a parent, a volunteer, and a trustee, I never had the opportunity to be part of the IDS community every minute of every day.

My first year as Head of School has opened my eyes to the power of our lively, engaging learning community to produce excellence in each and every student. Many of you reading the Beech Tree Connection have experienced this power – as a student at IDS, as the parent of an IDS graduate. Whether you graduated just a few years ago or walked our halls in the 70s, you would recognize our school today as having the same dedication to hard work and collaboration that you experienced, building character and compassion, maintaining optimism for the future, and enabling today’s students to become tomorrow’s leaders. While you read in the following pages the many ways that IDS is growing and changing, remember that the foundation upon which our school was built and of which you are a part remains strong and true – empathy, compassion, respect, connection, responsibility, and love.

Centers of Excellence

Although IDS has always emphasized these skills, the school has

embarked on an ambitious effort to more intentionally develop and connect these important subjects by creating four Centers of Excellence: Global Citizenship;

Creative Arts; Environmental Literacy; and Design, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship. These centers are a core element of the Strategic Plan adopted by the IDS Board of Trustees this year.

IDS faculty members have been the driving force behind the Centers, identifying and designing these essential areas of focus and determining exactly what form the Centers should take moving forward. Here are more details about each one:

Center for Design, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship This Center is comprised of three separate creative spaces (Ideation Studio, Tech Lab, and Maker Lab) that work together to form a highly-energized setting where students work in tandem to identify problems, negotiate options, and fashion solutions. There are no sidelines in these studios, as every student rolls up their sleeves and eagerly enters the marketplace of ideas with the goal of helping to build that “better mousetrap.”

The skills introduced and developed through design thinking are the very skills that are now encouraged and coveted by cutting edge industries and companies looking to succeed in an increasingly complex and highly nuanced world. IDS was one of the first schools on the east coast to embrace “design thinking.” A faculty member traveled to Nueva School in California in 2010 to learn about the process and see their design lab before launching our own here.

Looking beyond our local environs and exposing students to the wider world has always been a priority at IDS. A second language is introduced in the earliest grades and the study includes ample exploration of culture through songs, art, food, and more. The Center for Global Citizenship and Cultural Studies aims to build on that base by using language listening centers, live global Skype interactions, and a curriculum designed to promote cultural understanding and empathy.

Centers of Excellence

The Center for Global Citizenship and Culture Studies will eventually be located in a newly-equipped Kehrhahn Community Room. To improve the utility of the room and to give the room a global stamp, we hope to include a language lab, library, music center, and art display, as well as new tables and chairs that improve flexibility for the space and new seating options. We have decorated the space with a wall-size world map and hope to add global values, banners, and ways to display our community’s global presence.

Center for Creative Arts IDS has a long history of strong arts programs. Classroom plays produced in kindergarten through fifth grade prepare students to shine in middle school musicals. A visual arts curriculum that is coordinated with the offerings at each grade level gives every student a chance to learn about the history of artistic expression and try their own hand at a variety of different techniques.

The theatre program is lucky to have a spectacular home in the Galluzzo Performing Arts Center, but the dreams for the future include enhancing that space and creating and improving additional visual arts spaces at IDS. In Galluzzo, the vision is to do an acoustical renovation of the band room, build more attractive storage in the dance studio, and add cosmetic touches to bring beauty and inspiration to the lower Galluzzo. The hope is that eventually, the program might add a recording studio and a portable stage. To celebrate the visual arts, we see a renovation of the art studio as essential, and would also love a gallery space to show student work.

For kindergarteners, just stepping up onto the stage in the awe-inspiring Galluzzo Theatre is a milestone. Most schools assume children this young can’t make a fulllength show with costumes, cues, and songs that come to life on their own. But after weeks of practice, sweet sixyear-old Beni (above) and his classmates stepped onto the stage and wowed us! They were secure in their lines and clearly enjoyed themselves as they shared about ecology in a 45-minute, original class play.

Center for Environmental Literacy Referring to environmental stewardship, Theodore Roosevelt once said, “Of all the questions which can come before this nation…there is none which compares in importance with the great central task of leaving this land even a better land for our descendants than it is for us.” For almost 250 years, Americans have worked to strike a balance between utilizing and preserving our nation’s natural resources. The Center for Environmental Literacy wishes to develop our property to provide more and varied spaces in which students can learn about our environment and how to care for it. Our ideas include building an outdoor classroom, increasing dock space on the pond, building blinds to allow for naturalistic observation, completing the rain barrel pump on the EC playground, and building covered bulletin board stations on the nature trail.

Director of Physical Education Janet Sisson fully embraces the school’s unique setting and continuously works to expand the offerings each year – recently adding snowshoeing, mountain biking, and even a fishing derby, so students can both grow comfortable with and appreciate what it takes to preserve our immediate surroundings and the world beyond.

This powerhouse group earned offers of admission from the following schools: Avon Old Farms, Berkshire School, Cheshire Academy, Cheshire High School, Choate Rosemary Hall, Cushing Academy, Darrow, Forman, Gunnery, Hall High School, Hamden Hall, Hopkins, Kingswood Oxford, Loomis, Mercy, Middletown High School, Miss Porter’s School, Saint Andrews, Salisbury, Suffield Academy, Taft, Watkinson, Westminster, Williams, and Xavier, with several earning prestigious merit scholarships. We will miss the Class of 2017, but feel certain that they will make their mark and represent IDS well at 17 different public and private high schools next year.

Members of the Class of 2013 enjoyed a Mexican fiesta together in June. Congratulations to them on their high school graduation and best of luck as they head off to college, gap years, and other new adventures!

We were delighted to welcome more than two dozen alumni representing the classes of 2011 through 2016 back for our Annual Alumni Softball Game against the graduating eighth graders. It was a beautiful day for the game and we loved to see familiar faces floating through the halls.

Our middle schoolers and Janet Sisson are lucky to have some experienced golfers, including former IDS trustee Frank Granger, join them for practices during the spring. We are grateful for their continued connection with IDS! independentdayschool.org | 860.347.7235

Early Childhood

PLAYGROUND For many years IDS’s Early Childhood playground looked like many others. It featured a commercially manufactured play structure, a sandbox, and a plastic playhouse - fun, but static in terms of the kind of play it encouraged. When teachers, parents, and kids were surveyed about their favorite memories of play, they fondly recalled something much more natural and open ended - climbing on downed logs, jumping from boulder to boulder, and splashing about in streams or ponds.

Chris Ozyk, a natural playground designer who works at Yale’s School of Forestry, knew that a few strategically placed rocks would make all the difference. The new Early Childhood Playground embraces the natural campus and encourages more engaged, collaborative play. It includes a stairway of big boulders to run down the hillside, a small stream feature through a warren of smaller rocks, and fallen logs to use like balance beams.

The kids’ favorite new feature might be the “Lion King Rock”, which allows children to stand high above the playground as Mufasa did when he held baby Simba aloft in the Disney movie. That rock also has a hidden cave where kids sometimes hide treasures found on the playground.

The playground was dedicated in loving memory of Cheryl Gusenburg, who died in July 2015, after completing two years as a second grade teacher at IDS. Cheryl’s warmth, wit, and dedication to her students live on in this tangible memorial.

The goal is to add some additional features to the playground over the years, continuing to build on the goal of allowing students to engage with the natural environment and to remember a beloved teacher.

IDS Spotlight

Congratulations to William Foster ’17 who won the Connecticut National Geographic State Bee. He went on to finish in the top half at the national competition in Washington, D.C. in May.

We’re still talking about the fun we had at the Alice in Wonderland Auction in April. Clearly Kasia Kovalik, Parent ’17, the Queen of Hearts, Trustee Grace Krom, Parent ’08 and the Mad Hatter enjoyed themselves!

Fearless Fitness at IDS!!!

Forty-four of our IDS kids achieved the Presidential/Gold Fitness Award this year!

Students need to achieve gold scores in each of the following tests: sit ups, sit and reach, shuttle run, pull ups, and age-appropriate distance run. Special recognition went to Francesca Antonopoulos ’17 as the first IDS student EVER who has achieved the Presidential/ Gold Fitness Award every year that she has been at IDS, kindergarten through grade 8!

IDS Spotlight

Always one of our favorite days, Grandfriends’ Day honors the special connection our students have with their grandparents and other special adults in their lives. We are thrilled to welcome more than 200 guests to campus and to share with them our classrooms and our musical offerings.

IDS’s active Interact Club, guided by teacher Chris Ellis, raised $1,043 over the course of the school year to donate to the Rotary Foundation’s work to eradicate polio. The club’s leadership team attended a Rotary Club meeting to present the check and talk about their work at IDS. We are very proud of two of our fifth grade students, Theo Burrell ’20 (above) and Marina Reale ’20 (right), who represented IDS recently at the Connecticut Invention Convention statewide competition. Theo and Marina were two of over 600 participants from all over the state in Grades K-8. Theo created the V-T Plow 1.0 and Marina created the Flour Power Rolling Pin. Science teacher Paula Mansfield was recognized for over 10 years of presenting the Connecticut Invention Convention curriculum and serving her students with inspiration and challenge! Congratulations to Paula, Theo, and Marina!

IDS Spotlight

IDS again had a spectacular showing at the regional and national competitions for the National History Bee. Eight students competed in the regionals in two locations: Alexandros Antonopoulos ’22, Amelia Bardoe ’21, Ethan Bardoe ’17, Andrew Foster ’20 , William Foster ’17, Katie Gendrich ’18 (not pictured), Jackson Meisner ’17, and Silas Webb ’20. Ethan, Jackson, William, Katie, Andrew, and Alexandros earned the chance to continue on to the national finals in Atlanta in June and Jackson and William finished in the top eight in the region for their grade. At the National Finals, William earned a spot in the final competition (top 64 students in each grade) and also finished third in the country in his grade on the geography subject exam.

Huge congratulations to Harper Sanford ’17 for her victory at the Interscholastic Equestrian Association National Finals in Virginia in April!

IDS musicians received special attention and recognition from the Connecticut Music Educators Association at their conference in March. Dr. Marijke Kehrhahn and music teacher Jane Mills presented a session on Teaching Chamber Music at the Middle School Level to attendees with the help of Cole Hadarik ’17, Jack Reynolds ’17 and Kyle LoSacco ’17 who played in a trumpet trio; Ryan Jacobson ’18, Luke Parkerson ’18, and Jack Gouin ’18 who played in a saxophone trio; and Emmett Parkerson ’17, Katie Gendrich ’18 and Ethan Ciak ’17 who performed in a woodwind trio. Emmett, Katie and Ethan’s trio was one of eleven ensembles selected from many elementary through high school submissions from across the state to perform as an Honors Ensemble at the conference. Following their performance the Woodwind Trio was presented with an award by CMEA.

Nearly 100 bike racers took to the trails this spring for the Connecticut Cycling Advencement Program’s School Short Track Series Races. Thanks to Janet Sisson for all her work on this event. IDS Spotlight

The IDS Jazz Band and Trumpet Trio both received Gold Awards and the Woodwind Trio received a Platinum Award, the highest award at the Fantastic Festivals adjudication in May. Following the performances, the students received a mini clinic, full of great observations. Members of the Woodwind Trio smiled when Edward Tyler, one of the adjudicators, mentioned to them that he was giving them feedback similar to comments he would give a college level ensemble! Congratulations to all of our performers and to music teacher Jane Mills.

Huge congratulations to Lathan Ajegba ’22, who participated in the National Junior Track Meet in New York this spring. Lathan placed 14th in the 200 meter with a time of 30.28 seconds! Amazing and definitely FEARLESS!!!

A Warm Welcome

students and constantly evolving my teaching methods to better serve the needs of my students.

I am heavily invested in the arts and have acted in plays throughout my middle school, high school, and college career; I am a proponent of project-based learning based on student interest. I am friendly, creative, analytical ,and a very hard worker. My goal is to help students develop strong problem-solving skills and effective communication strategies and to knit together a caring classroom community. Families are the backbone of the IDS community, so if you see me around the building, please introduce yourself. I would love to meet you!”

Audrey Minto (K-5 Spanish) will be joining us as a part-time teacher. Ms. Minto is a native French speaker who was born and raised near Paris, France.

She earned a B.A. in Spanish from Paris XIII University. She has two daughters who have been brought up in a bilingual household. They also share her love and passion for languages. A tri-lingual educator, Audrey taught French and Spanish to Lower School and Middle School students for 15 years at The Country School in Madison. Using the experience she acquired over the years, she developed a fun and relaxed teaching approach in which children feel comfortable and thrive learning a language. She enjoys interacting with students of all ages and she feels very fortunate to be able to combine her professional training, her love of languages ,and her natural disposition to teach her students effectively. She is passionate about teaching languages and sharing the culture of the French- and Spanishspeaking countries and is well-embedded in the Connecticut World Languages teaching community. When we met Audrey, we appreciated her enthusiasm for language learning from an early age, her experience, her knowledge of language teaching, and her love of travel – we know she will be a brilliant addition to IDS’s Spanish program.

to OurCaroline New Faculty Mortiere (Grade 3) joins us from St. George’s Independent School in Memphis, TN where she served as the 3rd grade teacher and assistant teacher in 2nd grade.

Caroline earned her BA in Child Study and Elementary Education from the University of St. Joseph in West Hartford. She has worked as a teacher assistant at Duffy Elementary School in West Hartford and Desoto County Public Schools in Mississippi. During her visit to IDS, Ms. Mortiere impressed us with the variety of activities she embedded in her lesson on angles and her instant connection with students. From Caroline: “I am so excited to be a part of the Lower School team! I grew up in Northern Virginia, right outside of Washington D.C. I love to go back and visit my parents, siblings, and all of the Smithsonian museums when I can.

Connecticut has always felt like my second home and now I am so thrilled to officially call it home. When I am not teaching, I enjoy a wide variety hobbies. I love trying new recipes, spending time with my family, reading a good book, or going to Block Island.”

Tricia D’Onofrio (Grade 5) grew up right here in Middletown!

She earned her BS in Elementary Education and her K-6 teacher certification at Central Connecticut State University and is currently working on her MS in Reading and Literacy. Ms. D’Onofrio taught 5th grade at St. Thomas the Apostle School in West Hartford and worked as a teaching assistant at Bugbee Elementary in West Hartford. She was a unit director for four years at Camp Ingersoll and is a Princess Party Entertainer!

During her IDS visit, Ms. D’Onofrio taught a lesson on extending the use of descriptive language; she made a strong personal connection with our students. From Tricia: “I am thrilled to join the IDS community as the new fifth grade teacher. I have been working with children for the past 8 years in various fields. My strengths lie in engaging

Ryan Gemmell (Algebra/Digital Arts and Sciences) is from Southington, CT. Mr. Gemmell recently completed his M.A. in Elementary Education at the University of Bridgeport and majored in Math as an undergraduate at CCSU. He taught Algebra and Geometry at Avon Old Farms School prior to his enrollment in his Master’s degree program, where he also served as an assistant football, wrestling, and lacrosse coach and a residence hall advisor. We were impressed with Ryan’s knowledge of mathematics, his extensive use of technology in and outside the classroom, his kindness, and his dedication to the development of young people. He is excited to join the IDS faculty and will bring his unique energy and his passion for teaching to both the Middle School and the Lower School. In addition to his assigned teaching duties, Mr. Gemmell will be offering a math enrichment/challenge period once a week to Middle School students who want to excel in math.

Christine Masick (English/Theatre) is an educator with over 17 years of experience.

She taught English, social studies, and creative writing at Moravian Academy Middle School in Bethlehem, PA for 10 years. Her additional experiences working with students with disabilities as the Testing Coordinator at Muhlenberg College, substitute teaching, volunteering as an elementary school librarian, and tutoring have enriched her philosophy of education to be more inclusive to various types of learners. Ms. Masick’s personal and professional writing experience includes: creating and overseeing the production of Moravian Academy Middle School’s first literary magazine, writing and presenting a creative honor’s thesis at Muhlenberg College, participating in a weeklong poetry conference at The Frost Place in Franconia NH, and delivering several chapel meditations at Moravian Academy.

From Christine: “My family and I spent the summer moving from Allentown PA to Madison and have been hard at work on house projects. When not working on renovations, I enjoy reading, hiking, going to the beach, and spending time with my family.”

Faculty Farewell

In June, we said farewell to five IDS faculty members. As hard as it is to say farewell to these wonderful teachers, we wish them well as they travel new roads. They have made their unique contributions to IDS as a school and have touched the lives of our students in many memorable ways.

Their names are written on our hearts; we know they will always be friends of our little school.

F

rann Ravid began her career at IDS in 1988, teaching first grade for two years. She returned in 2002 as our Pre-K teacher and over the past 15 years has served in that capacity as well as an Early Childhood Science teacher, a Middle School English teacher, a Middle School Math teacher, a Middle School Advisor, the Associate Director of Admissions, and the Head of Lower School.

Throughout her career at IDS, Ms. Ravid has, in her own words, “aspired to challenge students as they explore areas of strength and support students as they work through struggles.” As a school, we have relied on Frann’s dedication, intelligence, integrity, and thoughtfulness to help us build strength and solve problems.

A kind and caring teacher who has always strived to do her best, Frann is leaving her indelible mark on IDS. We wish her much happiness on her new adventure.

aureen Dorsey began her IDS career as a long term substitute in fourth grade in 2000.

We are so happy she stayed! Mrs. Dorsey taught 2nd Grade for 12 years and has taught 3rd Grade for the last five years, teaching well over 250 IDS students during that time. Maureen has contributed her expertise to help so many students learn to love reading and to read well. To all who know her, Maureen brings kind-heartedness, devotion to children, and the best sense of humor to each day. Fortunately, she will be staying on at IDS part-time to provide Learning Center services and to guide our new teachers. Maureen states: “IDS holds a special place in my heart. I have the utmost respect for my IDS colleagues and count them as closest, dearest friends. It is with mixed emotions that I have decided to work part time. It will allow me to continue what I value doing most, helping to support students in their educational journey, and to devote more time to my family.”

J

amie Guite joined the faculty of IDS in the fall of 2015 as the Middle School Theatre teacher, teaching subjects such as puppetry, public speaking, and acting. Ms. Guite has enriched the after-school theatre program, teaching dramatic arts to EC and LS students. She has pushed our middle schoolers to explore self-expression, teamwork, and creativity while challenging themselves to step outside their comfort zones. A fun-loving, goaloriented teacher and mother of three (including twin 3-yearold boys!), Jamie will be leaving IDS to pursue her career in organizational consulting. We wish her all the best!

P

amela Guidi arrived last fall at IDS to serve as an Assistant Teacher for Grades 3-5 and to teach computer tech skills to Lower School students. Ms. Guidi demonstrated a willingness to jump in wherever needed and supported the learning of many students during her year with us at IDS. We appreciate Pamela’s contributions to our school community during this all-too-short year and we send her on with our best wishes.

driana Castillo taught Spanish K-5 (and sometimes 6!) for 12 years at IDS. Señora Castillo, a native of Colombia, brought her love of Spanish language and culture to our school along with her unique brand of enthusiasm and sense of fun. She encouraged IDS students from the earliest grades to make presentations in Spanish at All School Meeting, building their confidence in their capacity to communicate in a second language.

She organized several trips abroad for IDS students and families and was always a great tour guide. We will miss Señora Castillo and we wish her all the best at The Country School! She will always be a part of the IDS community.

Class Notes Rich Gibbons ’79 lives in San Diego, where he is the president of SpeakInc. the largest speaker bureau in the Western United States.

Scott Messinger ’79 is the vice president and general counsel of the Wyss Foundation in Washington, D.C. He writes, “IDS was an enormously important part of my childhood. I was a student there from 1971-1979.” Scott’s younger sisters, Abby and Rachel, also attended IDS and his mother was the school’s music teacher in the late 70s.

April Guidone ’94 has a new start-up called Parlaey (www. parlaey.com) a marketplace where professionals can hold informational interviews, give advice, and offer career coaching (no more free networking!), Parlaey allows you to charge a fee for your time — think LinkedIn meets Airbnb.

Rachel Huff Papke ’94 spoke at this year’s IDS graduation, sharing her experience finding her passion working for the Jordan Porco Foundation.

Tony Scelfo ’96 and his wife Eryka welcomed twins, Teagan Lee and Preston Cooper on March 29. The babies join big brother Garrett Nero, 2. The family recently moved to Colorado, where Tony continues to work for Google.

Sarah Nichols Grundy ’97 gave birth to a second son, Colin Andrew, in September 2016. He joins older brother Brendan.

Sarah, her husband Derek, and their boys live in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, where Derek works for Reebok and Sarah works as a nurse at a private school. Sarah is the daughter of long-time IDS employee Robin Nichols, who enjoys visiting the family in her retirement.

Matt Zavod ’86 sang the National Anthem at an Oakland A’s games in June. Matt works as an ear, nose, and throat doctor in Woodland, CA. You can hear his performance on YouTube at https://youtu.be/UzZyTywzWcA Elizabeth Johnson ’88 lives in Durham, NC and works as a trauma educator, helping people understand how sexual abuse affects health. “I talk mainly to healthcare folks and educators but also do a free, community-based support group for sexual abuse survivors,” she writes. Her website is www. outsidethemombox.com. “As my daughter starts Kindergarten, IDS has very much been on my mind,” Elizabeth writes. “I loved it so much. My mom taught there the entire time that I was there and beyond and I still love IDS. She died in 2015 of complications from ALS.” Danielle Billingsley ’92 and her wife Kathleen Foley now live in Los Angeles, where Kathleen is in her final year of law school at UCLA.

Those of us in Connecticut can thank Josh Moskites ’98 for the cheesy goodness that is his amazing food truck The Whey Station. He was recognized on the national food website Delish.com as having the best grilled cheese sandwiches in the state. The site called out his “insane gourmet grilled cheese” including one with brie, prosciutto, and fig spread and another with pickled jalapenos and a fried egg. Becky Groberg ’99 gave birth to baby Wesley Alander in January 2016. She and her husband Dave live in Burlington, VT, where she teaches children’s yoga.

We heard from the mother of Elizabeth Kveton ’99, who reported that Elizabeth was working as a registered nurse at Yale-New Haven on the surgical trauma floor, working toward a spot in the intensive care unit.

Allison Wilson ’99 works as a vice president and assistant general counsel at Goldman Sachs in New York. She writes “I am still enjoying living in NoHo in NYC and celebrated three years at Goldman Sachs in June. I recently joined the Steering Committee of a non-profit, Aphasia Recovery Connection (ARC), which is committed to improving the quality of life for people recovering from aphasia and their families and friends.”

Celebrating a Special IDS Friendship

Katie Gamelli ’00 and Catherine Guarino ’00 have been friends for over 25 years. They initially met in ballet class at age three but it wasn’t until they were both in kindergarten at IDS that their true friendship began to form. It was during their years at IDS that they found a lifelong friendship. From performing together in the first grade production of Pinocchio to building gingerbread houses in Mrs. Zemetis’s art class to being coached on the basketball team by Ms. Sisson, their connection grew. Although Katie and Catherine attended different high schools and colleges after graduating from IDS, they were never too far away to stay in touch. In fact, they became even closer over the years and have remained the best of friends, experiencing all that life has to offer with each other by their sides. In fact, just this past spring Katie was the maid of honor at Catherine’s wedding. They both look forward to what the next twenty five plus years brings.

Jessie Saunders ’00, was featured in the University of Rhode Island alumni magazine for her work as one of the nation’s few veterinarians who focuses on fish kept in home aquariums and ornamental ponds. Jessie started her practice, Aquatic Veterinary Services, near Santa Cruz, CA in 2013.

John Reynolds ’01 and his wife Allie welcomed baby Lily Frances in March. Her proud family includes grandparents John ’69 and Simone and great-grandmother Fran, who was one of the founders of IDS. John, Allie, and Lily live in Wayne, PA, where John works for Vanguard Group.

Leah Gastler ’02 continues to perform on the viola, including at a Farmhouse Concert series at her family’s farm, Kalmia Gardens in Durham.

Dan Groberg ’03 lives in Vermont with his wife Mary Margaret.

He is director of communications and development for the community services department at the city of Montpelier.

Allie Mansfield ’03 married Brett Morris in August 2016 on Cape Cod. Allie is the regional director of sales for Palm Bay International.

Her mom is long-time IDS science teacher Paula Mansfield.

John Gauthier ’04 works as a real estate attorney at Davis & Gilbert LLP in New York City. He lives in Brooklyn with his dog Juniper.

Catherine Guarino ’00 married Dan Flynn in May 2016. Their son Hunter James was born in May 2017.

Jasmine Kehrhahn ’04 hasn’t ever entirely left the stage at IDS. She continues to direct the Middle School musicals (last year How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying) alongside a day job teaching English at Wallingford’s Sheehan High School.

Brittany Harris ’06 writes “I just moved to Toronto and am enrolling in two programs this fall through the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine and the Canadian College of Homeopathic Medicine. The first is to become a naturopathic doctor and the second is to become a homeopathic practitioner.

I am very excited.”

Matthew Gauthier ’07 graduated in 2015 from Davidson College and is in his final year of law school at the University of North Carolina. He has accepted a position after he graduates at Dechert LLC in Charlotte, NC. Danielle Harris ’08 graduated last year from Mount Holyoke College. Her sister Jackie Harris ’08 graduated from Sarah Lawrence College.

Gus Esselstyn ’09 graduated this past spring from Brown University. He is working in New York as a project manager for Watson & Company.

Liam Grace-Flood ’09 graduated from Wheaton College in Massachusetts with a double major in math and studio art with physics and computer science minors. He won a Watson Fellowship to study for a year how creative, collaborative spaces around the world reflect and uplift diverse communities.

“When I return from that fellowship, I’ll finish the last two terms of my BE from Dartmouth College in computer engineering, and then begin my MBA at the Yale School of Management,” Liam writes.

Lee Houle ’09 graduated this spring from Dartmouth College.

Dan Piscatelli ’09 graduated from Amherst College with a major in Political Science. He now lives in San Diego and is working for a company called Cutwater Spirits.

Rose Esselstyn ’13 graduated from Kingswood Oxford School and is headed to St. Lawrence University. At the end of her time at Kingswood Oxford, Rose was honored at the YWCA New Britain 2017 Women in Leadership Luncheon for her outstanding achievements, service, and contributions at school and in the community. She pioneered the KO Community Garden, which now includes 24 beds and produces vegetables used in the dining hall.

Timothy Halverson ’13 graduated from Hopkins School and will be a freshman at Bard College. Tim won a HALO award this spring for Best Standout Performance in an Ensemble Musical for his portrayal of Jesus in Godspell.

Dan Hettrick ’13, Jenny Weiss ’13, and Yavar Moien ‘13 are all beginning as freshman at the University of Connecticut.

Dan graduated from Xavier High School, Jenny graduated from Mercy High School, and Yavar graduated from Choate Rosemary Hall.

Class Notes Derek Socha ’13 completed a project labeling the nature trail at IDS as his Eagle Scout project.

David Marottolo ’14 has been collecting honors as he nears the end of his high school career at Kingswood Oxford School. Last winter he won a top prize at a Choate debate tournament (first place advanced speaker) and qualified to go to World Championships in Sydney, Australia. In the spring, his musical composition, Chanson d’automne was performed at the Young Composer Concert at the Eastern Division Conference of the National Association for Music Education in April in Atlantic City, NJ. Only thirteen compositions were selected for the concert, which makes this a distinct honor. He also won the Harvard-Radcliffe Club of Northern Connecticut Prize and the Edith and Saul Shulansky Performing Arts Award at KO’s end of year awards assembly.

Lifelong IDS Friends Become Business Partners

Justin Galluzzo ’05, Madison Strickland ’06, and Blake Buss ’06 have embarked on a huge project – building a shopping center called Plaza Nahualapa, named after the indigenous community in Las Salinas, Nicaragua. The finished complex will feature 10 units, including four that the IDS alums will run: a café, a restaurant called Mad Dog Pizza, a bakery, and a meat market. Justin writes that they were inspired to do this because of “our lifelong friendship that started at IDS.” They are passionate about the difference they can make in this community. “We plan on boosting local economic development while providing products that don’t yet exist in the area,” writes Blake. “We started construction around January and we’re posed to be finished later this year (it depends upon the weather during the wettest months, September and October).

Blake says his early roots at IDS are a major factor in this work. “I decided to do this project because I wanted to work together with friends in an exciting new environment. My Spanish is obviously invaluable here. I really became good at Spanish because Bonnie Laserna was such a demanding t e a c h e r.

She really expected the best out of us and we were working on grammar that is usually introduced in high school.”
