Jacob Jacob was the grandson of Abraham. He was the son of Isaac and Rebekkah. One night, Jacob encountered an angel. The two wrestled all night. As the sun began to rise, the angel begged Jacob to let him go. But Jacob said, “I WILL NOT LET YOU GO UNLESS YOU BLESS ME.” The angel gave Jacob a special blessing–a new name. The angel named Jacob: “Israel.” Israel means “one who struggles with God.” That is the origin of the name of Israel. It is also why Jews are sometimes called B’nai Yisrael. Jews are the families of Israel.
