ialto Hurstbourne, a brand-new luxury apartment community, is the city’s newest top address. The community is nestled within Hurstbourne Towne Center at the corner of Hurstbourne and Shelbyville Road, within walking distance to all the wonderful shops and dining. “This project is the marriage of luxurious homes, a highly sought after Louisville neighborhood and superior service; it is something HILLS, Hurstbourne and our residents can be proud of for a long time,” says Brandon Guttman, VP of Land and Development for HILLS Properties. Rialto Hurstbourne is named after the historical downtown theatre that stood on 4th Street from 1920 to 1969; the design of the buildings take inspiration from this famed location. Floor plan names all follow the theme, as well as the luxurious decorations, plush fabrics and artwork. At Rialto residents can expect the red-carpet treatment. Rialto Hurstbourne is currently leasing and moving in
residents. The community will offer fantastic amenities including a heated salt-water pool, putting green, golf simulator, lounge areas and beer and wine on tap. For those who enjoy a healthy lifestyle, a saltwater pool and individual fitness rooms for yoga and pilates group classes and flexible use are available. The outdoor space includes fire pit gathering areas and a social deck
with community grills. “The homes are designed to cater to any lifestyle featuring unique characteristics like home offices, half baths and custom home finishes,” says Sara Hendricks, Portfolio Manager for Hills Properties. Prospective residents may choose between 1- and 2-bedroom homes with expansive square footage and flexible space
areas. The building interiors give the experience of a high-end boutique hotel. Some of the most popular features are in-building garage parking, elevator access, 12-by24 granite tile, Quartz countertops, under cabinet lighting, custom kitchen cabinets and chrome accents. “We kept our customer’s wants and desires top of mind during design and development,” Sara says.

hey weren’t looking for any old house, though; they had specific wants and needs: a “much more liveable house,” Karen says. “It was time for us to move on.” Her husband, David agrees, saying, “Every project you do on an older home multiplies into several other jobs.” The couple sold their Cherokee Triangle home, moved into a rental, and deciding not to build, they went on the search for a home with character. In August 2019, they found a fixer-upper
in a contemporary Glenview home with high ceilings, a spacious lot of two acres and “great bones,” says the couple. It needed work, though, so the couple went to work with their designer, Joan Waddell of J. Waddell Interiors and contractor John Waller, owner of Waller Design Group, for a complete renovation. The home went from a contemporary style to an open, transitional ranch home with 3-bedrooms, 4-full-and-2-and-a-half baths, a billiard room and a bourbon room. “The house had great bones and structure to

it, but the layout was really bad,” John says. “The floorplan wasn’t functional...there was no flow to it at all; all the living spaces were very segregated. My big goal was to open the house up, make it feel warm and feel comfortable for guests and entertaining.” Work began in October 2019 as the team gutted the home down to the studs, creating a more private master bedroom and bath from a previous sunroom, opening up the space with both square footage and light. The once small kitchen was ripped out to create an eat-in area and 10-foot Quartz island with custom cabinets from John Waller. The tile behind the range was individually handmade to go with the two-toned hutchstyle cabinets on both sides. The bathrooms were styled with natural stone and a waterfall tower in the master. “It had to be done perfectly,” John says.

he tile goes from light to dark blue. “I’ve been in the industry for 28 years, so for something to impress me is hard, but that really impressed me,” says John about the workmanship and detail. John had the idea for the bourbon room, and after the designer’s OK, he began work with David on a custom entertainment room. John and his team set out to Kelvin Cooperage and loaded trucks with barrels and staves with bungs intact. Then, he added floating sleeves on the wall with frosted glass and LED lights to highlight David’s extensive bourbon collection.

he flooring throughout was sanded and stained darker, and the floor in the foyer was replaced to create a custom chevron design. The couple made sure the home was accessible so they could “age in place,” Karen says. “We moved both parents into more accessible homes; we thought about this as we built the home...everything is adaptable.” This meant the staircase, once encased, is now open and all doorways were widened. The front door gives everyone something to talk about, as it is a modern, custom-made steel commercial door weighing 1,400 pounds.

he front of the home was extensively changed with the addition of a covered porch, and new windows that mimicked the style of the front door with copper tops. “It completely changed the style of the house, and many neighbors have thanked us,” says Karen. The backyard was once a 10-by-10 concrete slab with a pool, but David took on the project with landscaper Jeff Skelton with Frank Otte Nursery to create a serene space. The couple says they live out on the covered back porch, enjoying the stone fireplace. The couple and contractor agree that the collaboration between the team made the project easier. “We tried to do things ourselves and failed miserably,” David says. “The process was very easy. We got along so well.” John Waller won Best Full House Remodel from the Building Industry Association for his work on the home. “The aesthetics of the house, the way it turned out, were awesome,” John says. “It was a transformation. I’m just really proud of it.” You can contact Waller Design Group at (502) 639-6494 9 or email@example.com.

Fortunately, the stone industry hasn’t seen the price surges that have occurred with other materials like wood 28 louisville homes & gardens | July 2021
ith families spending more time at home over the past year and more people working from home, remodeling is big business with stone and slab fabricators busier than ever! “Fortunately, the stone industry hasn’t seen the price surges that have occurred with other materials like wood,” says Marty Leet of ELeet Stone Countertops. Marty’s wife Tracy represents the third (going on fourth!) generation in the family business of stone countertops. ELeet is named after the “E” in “Eryn” - their daughter’s name - combined with their last name. Eryn is already involved in the Leet family business, and Marty is hopeful that their son Carson will follow suit. Tracy Leet’s grandfather, her father Bob McDonald, and brother Mark were in the business before Tracy branched out on her own in October 2004 with Marty, who has a sales and marketing background. “Once customers and suppliers hear Tracy discussing stone, they realize she really knows what she’s talking about. She even puts me in my place sometimes with her knowledge.” Tracy traveled with her father and stepmother to Brazilian quarries to
hand-select stone shipped over to the US in containers. Although quartz and porcelain are fine materials for thicker-looking, mitered waterfall edges,” Marty says, “Natural stone (such as granite, marble, quartzite, or dolomite) is timeless and has a natural beauty.”

ELeet is “a one-stop-shop for design work, selecting materials, templates, fabrication, and installation.” According to Marty, ELeet does “high-end, quality custom work, not cookie-cutter. It says on the side of the trucks, ‘Relationships Built In Stone.’ Our salespeople are also project managers and designers who manage every step from edge detail and seams to placement, sinks, and backsplashes. We are not after the typical Home Depot and Lowe’s projects. We are a smaller husband-and-wife operation that truly cares about the end product.” When a higher production business ran into “too intricate of a job,” they consulted with suppliers to find a better fit for the client and turned to ELeet Stone Countertops. “We help each other out,” says Marty.

Speakeasy If you’re lucky enough to score an invitation to Jon Cecil’s basement bar, you might be impressed by the 150 bottles amassed there. But behind the sliding bookcase door, jaws will drop! BY DAWN ANDERSON • PHOTOS BY TAYLOR BIESCHKE

uests ushered into The Card Catalog Speakeasy hidden inside are “completely dumbstruck, just in awe” at 650 bottles of bourbon lining the shelves. A late 1800s card catalog from an old toy company holds an index card for each bourbon, typed out with the bourbon name, distillery, and year. Guests add a stamp with the date of their visit, their signature, and tasting notes for each selection they try. “I decided from the beginning of the pandemic in February (2020) that I wanted to build a speakeasy in my basement. I had been thinking about this room for the last ten years, giving my bourbon collection a truly deserving home and display.” Jon and his Uncle Mike tore down a wall and put it back up to create a larger 13’ by 10’ space. Jon drew it out and measured everything, right down to each electrical outlet. Completed in July 2020, the speakeasy features dark wood, period lighting, and black and gold art deco decor for an authentic Prohibition-era Gatsby feel. “I designed the entire room to feel like you were stepping back in time.”

on Cecil is General Manager of Liquor Barn in Middletown Commons and has a hospitality background in hotel management. He enjoys making people feel welcome at work and at his home. Jon started collecting, drinking, and educating others about bourbon in 2008. “I only drink bourbon with others present,” says Jon, “so during COVID, I cut back.” Now that life is returning to some sense of normalcy, “I don’t take hosting for granted ever. I have a greater appreciation of how to enjoy bourbon.” Jon’s favorite bottle is an A.H. Hirsch 16year, of which he currently has two versions. He keeps some Van Winkles on hand as well. Jon is particularly fond of Four Roses 2017 Al Young 50th Anniversary Limited Edition Small Batch with a nose of caramel and honeysuckle, flavors of fresh peaches and apricots, fig, and oak, and “a hint of mint” finish. He has collected different international versions of Blanton’s Limited Edition Single Barrel to spell out “Blanton’s” with the toppers of overseas releases. Jon recommends Basil Heyden’s Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey 80 Proof as approachable for those new to bourbon drinking. From there, progress to Old Forester 1910 and then Four Roses Small Batch Select. Old Forester 1910 is a double-barreled 93 Proof bourbon with sweet vanilla and caramel notes. Four Roses Small Batch Select comes in at 104 Proof and is fruitier, spicier, and more complex. Should this journey inspire you to build your own basement bar or speakeasy, Jon encourages you to “do what you’re passionate about,” stay true to the time, and true to your vision. “Think about the little things before you do the big things.”

Hot July? Don’t Forget to Keep Your Lawn Hydrated
louisville homes & gardens | July 2021 35
hot july? don’t forget to keep your lawn hydrated July is the time for watering, weeding, and taking stock of your garden. What kind of shape is it in now? What is working and what isn’t? Where and how can you keep a good thing going or course-correct? What does the weather forecast indicate? When fall harvest rolls around, will you be prepared? BY DAWN ANDERSON
36 louisville homes & gardens | July 2021
“Just living is not enough… one must have sunshine, freedom, and a little flower.” – H A N S CH RI S T I A N A N D ERS EN
water, assess, maintain Deadhead blooming annuals and perennials encourage fresh new growth. Assess any pest problems and treat them accordingly. Be sure container gardens have adequate drainage and the proper soil and nutrient balance. If you’ve set some houseplants outside, check to see if they are too dry or bug-infested. Putting up a bat house will help keep your outdoor spaces free of mosquitos and flies. Replace leaky hoses and watering cans to conserve water. Putting up a bat house will help keep your outdoor spaces free of mosquitos and flies.
birdwatchers beware The heat of summer is usually the time to provide a shallow water source for birds and butterflies. However, as of late June, a “mysterious illness” was blinding and killing birds in Jefferson, Boone, and Kenton counties in Kentucky, notably bluejays, grackles, and starlings. It could be related to a fungus in Brood X cicadas. In the event this is not the case, officials from the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife have asked residents of those counties to take down bird feeders and baths to prevent birds from congregating and possibly spreading disease. Statewide, Kentuckians should clean their bird feeders and birdbaths weekly with a 10% bleach solution.
planting plans The Louisville area is located in USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 6. Specific tips and garden chores for this zone include regular harvests to encourage further production and a second planting of green beans for canning. Plant a second or third round of arugula, kale, and lettuces for salads in late August and early September. Plant carrots, beets, chard, and peas for an early fall harvest. Dill, parsley, and cilantro plants will provide dried spices for the winter months. Prune blackberries and raspberries.
Bird safety according to the Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife Resources: In Jefferson, Boone and Kenton Counties:
• Cease feeding birds until further notice (when this issue has been resolved)
• Clean feeders and bird baths with a 10 percent bleach solution immediately, then weekly thereafter • Avoid handling birds, but wear disposable gloves if handling is necessary • Keep pets away from sick or dead birds as a standard precaution
Knowing what not to do is as important as knowing what to do. Avoid watering in the late afternoon and evening to prevent mildew. Try to get your chores done in the morning rather than the heat of the day. Rotting produce attracts insects, so harvest fruits and vegetables immediately when ripe. Mowing grasses too short this time of year exposes the soil to too much sun, robbing moisture and nutrients. Don’t let mulch dry out and fade away. Though it can be a heavy chore, mulching will reward you by retaining soil moisture and reducing weeds. And the new mulch makes your lawn and garden look so good, too! July is the month to plan out your fall garden. Plant seeds deeper in the fall than in the spring to nestle them where the soil is still cool and moist. The best vegetables to plant in a Zone 6 fall garden are beets, bok choy, broccoli, green beans, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, lettuce, peas, radishes, spinach, swiss chard, and turnips.
