Users & context

Robert Waltl, Initiator, Leader and Developer of the project, Director and Art director of Mini teater Ljubljana, Slovenia

« When starting the construction work and building of Mini teater quarters on Križevniška street in the centre of Ljubljana, I started researching the history and biographies of people living and creating in this area today and in the past. Amazed, astonished and astound I discovered an amazing history and all the richness that this part of our capital has to offer. Based on that I decided to do more, connecting and uniting all the institutions, individuals, groups and citizens of this area and our rich programme and quality work in the new Cultural Quarter Križevniška becoming an important part of our capital’s cultural and social life.»

Križevniška street is one of the oldest in Ljubljana city centre. In last decades it was not attractive for people to use (gray narrow street, no program…). After a new theatre was set up in the area the need to revive the street became obvious. The initiator Robert Waltl networked various players in the area (such as local inhabitants, small businesses, services, institutions etc.) in order to develop a common vision for the quarter as well as permanently work on its implementation.

Benefits

In Ljubljana, the capital city of Slovenia, based on the idea of Robert Waltl, Director and Art director of Mini teater a new Cultural Quarter Križevniška was born. An important part of the revitalisation was the Urban Intervention with the frondescence of the street, floral decorations, trees and innovative wheelbarrows and benches for resting - benches marked with names of well-known and renowned people working here. The Cultural Quarter Križevniška gained a fresh new outlook with the Urban Interventions project and the help of the Municipality of Ljubljana which included furnishing the street with benches, reading corners, new lighting, flowers and trees, bonding all those of us who create and work here.

The point is in a development of an area where different actors play together to achieve physical and programmatic revival of the area. This case is based on promotion of culture and historic city revitalisation.

Uniting the work, knowledge, energy and enthusiasm of all involved. Long term prospect and development of the area, especially in terms of development of different cultural events which might become bigger and widely recognised as Together we are Križevniška!

There are various scenarios possible, however it is essential, that those who work, create or live in the new cultural area act together and offer diverse gatherings, concerts and musical events, social events, literary and poetry evenings, quality theatre programme for children, post-drama theatre plays for adults and international festivals (e.g. Mini Summer Festival for children, Medieval Days and Medieval Festival in Ljubljana) every year.

Communication support The Cultural Quarter Križevniška uses different ways of communication, from press, radio and internet to television.

References Project and idea of Robert Waltl, Director and Art director of Mini teater, is organised, developed and carried out under a careful eye and guidance of Mini teater including City Museum of Ljubljana, tipoRenesansa printing press, galleries Photon and Squot, KUD C3, restaurants Shambala, At Vitez and Under the Rock. Financial support of the artists and developers of the project is co-financed by The Municipality of Ljubljana.
