About this match programme
By Richard Snowball This was the second match programme from York City’s third season in the Midland League. At the beginning of the 1924-25 season, the Midland League was nearly in crisis with the withdrawal at short notice of eight Football League club reserve teams from the League reducing it to fifteen clubs, and for the last two months of the season a subsidiary competition was arranged. City finished sixth in the main competition and second in the subsidiary one. This was the club’s most successful season so far. This match finished 1-1, a turnaround from the 5-0 defeat in the away match one month earlier. One week earlier they had again been knocked out of the F.A. Cup at the first qualifying round stage, 2-1 by Wombwell, but as the programme notes point out City had fielded a weakened side due to injuries. Local player Reg Baines made his debut during this season, aged 17, but left the club before returning in 1931 by which time City were in the Football League. He scored 29 League goals in season 1932-33 and left a second time when Sheffield Utd. paid a fee of £500 for him. He went on the play for Doncaster Rovers before returning to City for a third spell in 1937 to play an important part in City's F.A. Cup run to the 6th Round in 1937-38.
