Past Times in Palmers Green ... The village centre of Palmers Green in the late 1800’s was the post office, sorting office and general store on the corner of Green Lanes and Hazelwood Lane. A Hazelwood Lane road sign can be seen on the building just under the roof in the picture on the cover of this magazine. The post office moved into the old cottages in the mid 1860’s and stayed there until 1904 when it moved into another shop on The Triangle. The sorting office remained in Hazelwood Lane in the cottages until 1907 until it moved to a new single storey building opposite Fox Lane (the site of the current post office). Further down Hazelwood Lane, behind the post office was a shop projecting out. This was originally the home of Stern’s, a bakers that was well known for its cakes. In the late 1800’s this shop was taken over by Walter Perrin as a bespoke boot makers and repairers. The W. W. Perrin sign can be seen in the photos. This shop remained here until 1924 when it moved to another building further down Hazelwood Lane. In the photo taken in 1924 there is a sign on the roof of this shop advertising the new houses built by G. W. S Ingram that were available for sale in Doveridge Gardens. Around 1924 all the cottages were demolished to make way for a new building that would be occupied by the National Provincial Bank on the corner of Hazelwood Lane along with a block of shops leading down to the sorting office on Green Lanes. The bank has since merged with the Westminster Bank to create the National Westminster Bank and moved further along Green Lanes on the corner of Lodge Drive. A photo can be seen dated around 1977 when the bank had since left. The building was then taken over by The Job Centre which stayed in occupation until the late 1990’s when they moved to newly built premises on Aldermans Hill. In November 1999, after the shop remained empty for quite a while, it was taken over by Tony Ourris who refurbished the shop and opened Anthony Webb Estate Agents in February 2000. Anthony Webb still remain in occupation.
