Things are brightening up in the Axarquia area this month, with the launch of The Sentinella in COLOUR! The weather has been on the dull side throughout January, so we decided to take matters into our own hands and brighten up the outlook for the masses. Our new SUNNY pages aim to keep smiles on faces for longer, and provide greater reading pleasure than ever before. We would love to hear your comments about the new look. Please email with any suggestions, likes or dislikes (although we know there won’t be many of the latter)! The redesign means that now advertisers and editorial content are more evenly distributed throughout the magazine, proving advantageous to all. Do keep on letting our advertisers know that you saw their advert in The Sentinella magazine. We owe our success to our readers, for always keeping this in mind, and for staying so loyal over the last fiveand-a-half years (doesn’t time fly?!) A big thumbs-up to Kami and Tony for making the magazine look so good this month. It was a lot of extra work for them, re-jigging everything, so let’s make it clear that we’re all grateful for the effort. All together now – “thanks Kami and Tony!!” From next month onwards there will be a new monthly article in The Sentinella, called ‘Mind, Body, Spirit’. Recently, a few people emailed to thank me for writing about such issues in the monthly editorials, and one or two suggested a page dedicated to these topics. So from the March edition onwards, look out for the ´Mind,

Strange News A US woman was stunned when she spotted Jesus - on her iron. Mary Jo Coady, 44, of Methuen, Massachusetts, spotted the image while doing a pile of ironing. She says the stunning resemblance to Jesus Christ has reassured her that "life is going to be good". She has decided not to use the iron any more and plans to purchase a new one. Fatties kicked off a website for beautiful people A dating website for "beautiful people" says it has booted off 5,000 members for piling on the pounds over Christmas. said it acted after users posted photos of themselves celebrating Christmas and the New Year - revealing they had "let themselves go". "We responded to complaints by moving these members back to the rating stage. This is the same as having them re-apply," said Greg Hodge, the managing director. "Their re-applications were reviewed by existing members and only a few hundred were voted back in. Over 5,000 were rejected." Most of those expelled came from the US and Canada, but nearly 900 were from Britain. The social networking site, which boasts 550,000 members worldwide, allows its members to decide on who should be allowed to join. Avatar Sex Fans of blockbuster movie Avatar are being promised an alien sex scene when the film comes out on DVD. The sex scene was cut from the cinema version of the 3D sci-fi adventure, director James Cameron told a press conference. It features the giant blue avatar of paraplegic US Marine Jake Sully locking hair with his love interest, Neytiri. The scene was left out originally because the film was aimed at a family audience.

It’s Only a Film’s World! What we learn from films All hotel beds have special L-shaped cover sheets which reach up to the armpit level on a woman, but only to waist level on the man lying beside her. All grocery shopping bags contain at least one loaf of French bread. It’s easy for someone to land a plane providing there is someone in the control tower to talk you down. The ventilation system of any building is the perfect hiding place. No one will ever think of looking for you in there and you can travel to any part of the building you want without difficulty. The Eiffel Tower can be seen from any window in Paris. Medieval peasants had perfect teeth.

Any person waking from a nightmare will sit bolt upright and pant. Any lock can be picked by a credit card or a paper clip in seconds – unless it’s the door to a burning building with a child trapped inside. A man will show no pain while taking the most ferocious beating, but will wince when a woman tries to clean his wounds. All bombs are fitted with electronic timing devices with large red readouts so you know exactly when they are going to go off. A detective can only solve a case once he has been suspended from duty. If you need to reload your gun, you will always have more ammunition, even if you haven’t been carrying any before now.

Vanilla Pudding Robbery

Excerpted from an article which appeared in The Dublin Times about a bank robbery.

‘Once inside the bank shortly after midnight, their efforts at disabling the security system got underway immediately. The robbers, who expected to find one or two large safes filled with cash & valuables, were surprised to see hundreds of smaller safes throughout the bank. The robbers cracked the first safe's combination, and inside they found only a small bowl of vanilla pudding. As recorded on the bank's audio tape system, one robber said, 'At least we'll have a bit to eat.' The robbers opened up a second safe, and it also contained nothing but vanilla pudding. The process continued until all safes were opened. They did not find one pound sterling, a diamond, or an ounce of gold. Instead,

all the safes contained covered little bowls of pudding. Disappointed, the robbers made a quiet exit, each leaving with nothing more than a queasy, uncomfortably full stomach.

The newspaper headline read: ‘Ireland’s largest Sperm Bank robbed early this morning’ I don’t know about you but I feel a bit queasy just reading it !!

Linea Directa Expats that have a valid Spanish driving licence and those that have successfully transferred their overseas licence to comply with regulations here in Spain can now pay traffic fines at the touch of a button. Since May last year, the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) has made it possible for nationals and foreigners alike to pay fines for their driving offences via the internet, wherever they may be 24/7. Although not in English, the DGT´s website found at offers drivers the option to pay their penalties online with a credit or debit card in the comfort of their own homes, rather than via the traditional route of visiting a Banco Santander branch, the post office (Correos) or a local Jefatura de Tráfico office. What’s more – and provided that the driving licence has not been withdrawn for the infraction of a serious offence – a 30% discount is available for those that pay the penalty within 30 days of receiving the fine. If you wish to pay your fines online, here’s how to do it: 1) Access the DGT´s website at and enter the ‘Trámites y Multas’ section located on the left hand menu. 2) Select the fourth option on the submenu (¿Alguna Multa?) and subsequently, “Pago de Multas”. 3) Select option A – this will allow you to pay the fine without a Digital Certificate or Electronic ID Number. 4) Now enter the following information in this exact order to receive a receipt of pay

ment: document type, document number, first name, 1st surname, 2nd surname, record/file number and the total amount of the fine. However, those that have cover with Línea Directa, Spain’s largest direct line insurance provider that offers its expatriate customers ALL documentation and services in English, have yet another option. With motor cover from Línea Directa, all policy holders are able to leave the management of their fines and relevant legal matters in relation to road traffic accidents in their hands, and at no extra cost. Without a doubt, this market leader within the expat sector is very much committed to its foreign customers. Not only does its highly trained bilingual staff speak a language that its policy holders understand, but in the case of an accident or the management of fines, Línea Directa has a dedicated team of professionals that are available to provide assistance and carry out all necessary procedures as smoothly and as quickly as possible. To find out more about Línea Directa and its comprehensive and very competitive motor insurance policies, call 902 123 104. See main advert opposite

NaturVets A Day With Naturvets…. We arrive at the clinic in Cómpeta in the morning and our lovely nurse, Lisa, had got there a little earlier to turn on the heating, as it’s freezing cold and raining! A little puppy is already waiting to be seen. It’s a street dog, but our client spotted him in Vélez-Málaga after he had been run over by a car and broke a leg. The leg fracture is complicated so we call the traumatologist, as he’ll be able to do the job better. He agrees to pick up the dog for an operation the next day, and he says he’ll try to reduce the cost because the dog has no official owner. Next is a long-known client, a mongrel dog, in for dental cleaning. The owners hope to get rid of the awful smell

coming from the dog’s mouth. It’s likely to be a success as the dog’s teeth are really dirty and need a good polishing! Everything goes to plan, until suddenly there is a lot of noise in the waiting room and the door is flung open by a desperate owner claiming his dog is dying! While the man was shopping in Cómpeta, his wife phoned him in a panic. We decide to accompany the man home, and act quickly. I take the bag with essential medical

equipment and off we go. As soon as I see the dog I’m in no doubt that she has been poisoned, as she’s having convulsions and is unable to stand. An intravenous catheter is laid into her arm, which isn’t easy as the dog is kicking and trembling. The owners are extremely upset. Diazepam is injected and soon the dog is stabilised. The owners are advised to go to the police as there might be more cases of food poisoning. Back at the clinic Juan is neutering a female cat, and our favourite labrador comes in for a session of acupuncture to help with his arthritis. He´s always happy to come and he seems to be improving a lot. Finally the

day is over, and we head down to the coast…

I watched the 3D version and while those ridiculous-looking glasses hurt my nose after the first 60 minutes, I fought through the pain, as I was transported into a whole new world. The colour, imagination and beauty of planet Pandora, was simply magical. After a while I wanted to adopt it as my own; swap it for a while with the real one. And that’s exactly what the film’s main character, Jake Sully, did. The wheelchair-bound ex-marine’s conscious is downloaded into a lab-grown Na’Vi body, to enter the world on a peace mission, planned by scientists. Military commander, Colonel Miles Quaritch, however, has other plans. Apparently, a Na'vi

tribe is residing on top of one of Pandora's largest deposits of Unobtanium and the corporation that oversees the mining efforts wants them gone. Sully is tasked with infiltrating the tribe in the guise of his avatar and gaining their trust, while assessing their strengths and weaknesses for a possible invasion. And because every square-jawed hero needs an exotic love interest, enter the Na'vi warrior princess Neytiri (Zoë Saldana), who gradually succumbs to his charms. Pandora boasts lush jungles populated by weird exotic creatures, giant trees that house entire communities, and mountains that hang suspended in the sky. Yet its beauty is under attack and Jake finds himself, quite literally, torn between two worlds… So with all that said, there’s only one thing left to say. If I happen to bump into James Cameron in the street, I think I might even bow. Star Rating - *****/***** Top marks

Michelle from The Sentinella faces up to a special treatment at the Wellbeing Centre, in Torrox Costa. This month Rebeccah Curtis, at The Wellbeing Centre, has a special offer for a Non Surgical Face Lift. I booked myself in for one and felt a little anxious at what to expect. It was the "non surgical" element that caught my eye, as I’m not brave enough to go under the knife! It was my first visit to The Wellbeing Centre and Rebeccah made me feel extremely welcome. Before we started Rebeccah asked a few questions about my daily cleansing routine. I think the guilty expression on my face said it all, but I was instantly reassured that I wasn’t being judged, nor about to be sold a bag of products. Instead I received sensible advice about how to protect my face in this climate with the essentials being sun block protection and keeping hydrated by drinking plenty of water. The treatment started and my face was massaged via a machine. Rebeccah explained that my skin would benefit from improved circulation and movement, increased oxygen and nutrients, as well as lymphatic drainage and uplifting. Throughout the treatment, it felt like I was being massaged with fingers rather than a machine and it was so relaxing. Together with the atmosphere of the centre and the gentle music playing in the background, I don’t know how they treat people without falling asleep themselves! What was also great about this treatment is that you can apply makeup straightaway after. It also aids healing quicker both before and after a surgical operation. I immediately noticed the change to my face and at the time of writing this, a few days later, my skin feels incredibly soft, and it looks vibrant. A course of treatments is an option but not compulsory. The number of visits will depend on each individual, but a recommendation is that you have one each week throughout the duration of the

course. So lie back for one and a quarter hours, enjoy the tranquil atmosphere of the centre, and allow your face and you to feel better than ever. Now for a gander at what else is going on down in Torrox Costa in February 2010. From February 15th - 20th, Cafe Bar Nautico will be open, but only serving drinks and not food during this time. The next afternoon quiz will be at 3pm on 23rd February and the evening quiz is on Friday 12th at 7.30pm. Guido Bauer is a family business, now celebrating its ten year anniversary. Torrox Costa - Caribe The Caribe restaurant is situated directly on the Paseo Maritimo in Torrox Costa, close to the Riu Ferrara Hotel. It is easy to find, just park in the large free open car park next to the hotel, walk down to the Paseo Maritimo and turn left; it is the fourth restaurant bar along. It occupies one of the premier places on the Paseo with uninterrupted views of the beach and the sea and is famous for its spectacular sunsets, providing a tranquil and beautiful setting to eat and drink. Perhaps a perfect evening for family and friends, is to sit on the terrace and enjoy an evening drink, watching the sun gently set, then stroll inside to be seated in the fine dining area and enjoy a truly different “table de hote” meal, which for 3 courses starts at 12€ and with house rioja wines at 7€ per bottle, means a perfect evening that pleases the palette but does not offend the pocket and yes of course there is an extensive a la carte to choose from as well. Liliane (who is French) and Richard (who is English) are there to welcome you, be it for Liliane´s famous homemade apple crumble pie or perhaps a fine evening meal or lunch. Here you will hear English, Spanish, French and German spoken which gives the restaurant a truly international ambience. The restaurant has been in existence for more than five years and whilst still retaining the original Spanish menu, the new owners have introduced a range of special French Bistro style meals to complement the existing menu. There is always a

choice of plate of the day to choose from for lunch, which changes daily. For those of you seeking the traditional Sunday lunch, the Caribe offers a Traditional Roast Beef, Oven roasted potatoes, Yorkshire pudding and fresh vegetables Sunday lunch at just 7€, however strictly by reservation. Yes, gentleman, it is February and it is Valentines, so for Valentines the Caribe has put together a special Valentines dinner at 18€ per person, including a welcome glass of champagne, and for the real romantics we will source a single rose to be laid on your loved ones plate, please contact us to reserve. The Caribe is especially suited for holding events and parties, it provides an exclusive and private area that seats up to 32 people and increasingly is becoming a preferred choice. Liliane and the Chef, will sit, discuss and arrange the perfect meal that fits your budget and provides a menu that is exclusive to your party. The Caribe is open 7 days a week from 9:30am in the morning, so a morning coffee or an English, French, German or Spanish breakfast is available until late in the day. La Vaqueria

Rain, rain go away. Come again another day! I am sure many of you have had enough of it and will be happy if it doesn’t return for a while. But there are probably an equal number who would be delighted with more because we are all suffering from mopping withdrawals! La Vaqueria flooded so many times at the beginning of the year that my mop has totally worn out! For those with similar problems we sympathise and recommend that you take legal action if your house is new and not water tight. People with mortgages could try their bank, whose insurance may cover damages and repairs. If your problem is shoddy workmanship by a builder who suddenly doesn’t answer his phone, try the Juez De La Paz at your local town hall. These intermediaries are very helpful and can quite often solve problems between two parties without having to go down the Denuncia route. If, on the other hand, a denuncia is your only option don’t forget to check out whether you are eligible for legal aid. Couples surviving on relatively low pensions may qualify. Last month I said I’d be making monthly resolutions, rather than the traditional yearly one, which always proves impossible to keep! I asked people to contact me with information about lowering one’s carbon footprint in La Axarquia and I can now pass on a couple of handy tips. If your freezer is not full but needs to remain plugged in, fill it with carrier bags stuffed with newspaper. This will ensure it works more efficiently and therefore uses less electricity. Try to buy bread from your local Panaderia – much less energy has been used to produce an unsliced loaf that is not wrapped in plastic and has not been transported.

This month is diet month so it’s a low carbohydrate intake for me and lots of water. I have found the Atkins diet very effective in the past, but I now stick to my own version of it, which is not quite as strict so it’s a little more user-friendly. With children to cook for and a shop to run, I don’t have time to cook separate meals for myself, so a weight loss regime has to fit in around work and family. I will let you know how I get on! Having happily passed through life letting technology pass me by (a real dinosaur with head firmly buried in the sand) I have now enlisted the help of my teenage daughter and have a Facebook account! I understand (well, maybe!) that you may now look at this for up-to-the-minute news on La Vaqueria and see photos of all of our events, food and art works. The website is updated regularly too, but I think that this chat approach is a little more personal and current. As soon as the sun shines again everyone wants to be outdoors and we all start thinking about the garden and patios again. Certainly that is the case here and every little break in the clouds has seen us tidying up, re-organising and making new spaces for all of the lovely new stock due in from Morocco. I’m hoping to broaden the range of garden accessories with lights and ornaments as well as some unusual pots. The plants we sell here are all looking healthy and the more established ones will be happy to transplant during the next couple of months. I have a ‘buy one get one free’ offer on young trees which will be happier going into the ground this year. So do drop in and see us this month, even if it’s just for a chat and a cuppa. We’re always happy to see you!

Book Excerpt Sol Searching – A Fun-Filled Tale of a Modern Girl’s Move to the Costa del Sol – tells of Keidi Keating’s quest to make friends, meet the man of her dreams and find a job (starting this wonderful magazine)! An excerpt from Sol Searching below is printed below: Taken from the chapter entitled Spanish Life Even though I had not yet signed the legal documents for my new apartment, I was invited to the first community meeting held at a venue in El Morche. My parents came too, just for the fun of it. The community deals with maintenance of the apartment block. It is the done thing in Spain to elect

a president of the block to deal with any potential issues. Each month a payment is charged to all apartment owners to cover cleaning and repair works on the building. Book Excerpt (continued) voices, each trying to outdo the other, so that their point would be resolved first. It was no less than organised chaos. We three musketeers must have stuck out like sore thumbs, sat in utter disbelief, absorbing the rant these raving loons were producing. “I wish they’d shut up” I said, placing my hands over my ears. “Well they say the Spanish are the loudest country in Europe” said my Dad. “So there must be some truth in it.” The three Board Members looked far from impressed with the rebelling crowds. Every now and then the President, a man who looked like a Spanish version of Santa Claus, hammered his gavel on the table in a bout of frustration, craving silence.

Dolores, who sold me the apartment, joined us to decipher the day’s proceedings. Dolores is a serious looking fortysomething lady, who uses the wrong shade of hair dye. She rarely smiles, but speaks fairly good English. She looks like the ‘mumsy’ type and I wouldn’t be surprised if she likes dogs. Estate agents play a large role when it comes to selling property to clients, generally seeing you right through to the (often bitter) end. The Hair & Beauty Studio Sarah, from the Hair & Beauty Studio, has built up her clientele over the last five years and from day one it has increased and increased. "I need a bigger premises", Sarah has said many times. Now the opportunity has arisen and she has moved premises, just up the road from Morenos, at Cruce de Periana, Puente don Manuel. In this larger studio she has a quality team of seven experts, including herself. There are three fully qualified unisex stylists, Emma, Emma Louise and Karen, who are available six days a week and only use Wella and Loreal products. There is also Sophie, who has lived in Spain for fifteen years and currently works in a busy salon in Malaga and who now wants to build up a client base here in the Axarquia. She is a master at

nail extensions, so you really must call in and see her work (ask for a free demo!) Along with Sarah offering her fantastic beauty treatments, Debbie has also joined to carry out electrolysis. This permanently removes unwanted hair by attacking the hair follicle itself. A small amount of electrical current is applied to each follicle, which then destroys the root. Last, but certainly not the least, is the lovely Amanda who has worked with Sarah for the past year and has built up an extensive client base using both remedial and relaxing massage. So if you want to pamper yourself or you're just after a hair-trim, pop in for a free consultation. They will make you feel like a million dollars!

less than salad. That dish we could all do with eating more of – which is much easier to do in the sun! Unless you order a tropical salad, or you find yourself in a five star, luxurious restaurant, the salads in Spain aren’t anything to write home about. They mainly consist of lettuce, tomato, lettuce, tinned carrot / beetroot, lettuce, cucumber…and did I mention lettuce?

Empanadas – I spy with my little eye, something beginning with PIE! They come filled with all sorts of delicious concoctions. My favourite are the tuna and tomato. Yum!

Embutidos – This is a selection of cold sausages, which usually make last night’s dinner rise to my throat at first sight. A well disguised form of animal guts, intestines, organs, and Lord knows what else. I’ll pass, thanks!

Ensaladilla Rusa – This can be found on most run-of-the-mill tapas menus throughout Spain. I find it a little tedious after a while, but basically it’s served as a ‘slodge’ of mayonnaise, carrots, tuna and if your luck’s in, you might discover some olives too. Ensalada – Nothing more and nothing

Espinicas – Spinach and Popeye’s fave! I practically lived on this throughout the summer – each day I devoured a whole plate of it, also adorned with a selection of other salad veg – a much more adventurous selection than the typical ‘ensalada’ type and this time NO LETTUCE!

Spanish Foods (continued) Escalope a la Plancha – To be honest I never really know the difference between all the different kind of escalopes available in Spanish restaurants. They really don’t appeal and when I have been adventurous and ordered them, they all taste the same anyway… dry, chewy, bland and in need of a good dip with a particularly tasty sauce (the kind which masks all other flavours). Entremeses de la Casa – Homemade starters. You know what I mean… the kind of mini dishes that posh sorts serve on daintily held plates to a houseful of guests, who they try to impress with the show. Esparragos – As it sounds! Those green stick shaped vegetables, which make your wee smell weird if you eat too much (well mine anyway!)

Espaguetis – Spaghetti bolognaise – not always prepared in the way one would hope. Imagine taking some spaghetti and simply adding tomato sauce… nothing more, nothing less… Well that’s what you get served in most Spanish restaurants. No carrots, no onions, no meat, no peppers, no dash of red wine for taste. Nada. Estofado – Good old stew! The kind grandmother might have made. And if she didn’t then the kind your grandmother’s grandmother might have made. Absolutely delicious and slips down well with a side serving of rice.

Network Update Apologies to all those who tried looking at the new Sentinella website last month. There were a few technical glitches, which should be ironed out shortly. Feel free to check in throughout February to see if it’s up and running. If it’s not live already then it will be shortly. In terms of Network News, The Sentinella Malaga issue has a new owner! Marina and Geoff Bilton, who worked hard on the little mag for almost three years, have sold to Kevin Nelms, from Fuengirola. The Sentinella Axarquia, The Sentinella Costa Tropical and The Sentinella Costa West magazines are unaffected by this change. Here at The Sentinella Network we would like to wish Marina and Geoff well for the future, with whatever they decide to do next.

For those interested in launching The Sentinella in their area, there are now four

different entry levels starting from just 5,000€. This is all it now costs to start The Sentinella in your region. We are currently looking for the right people to start The Sentinella in Gibraltar, Granada City, and the Algarve, Portugal. We are also looking for one brave person to start The Sentinella in an area of the UK for a ‘too good to be true’ deal. Call 610 976 284 to find out more, or email

What Is It Called? Useless trivia... 1. The practice of eating insects is called entomophagy.

Zoologist Bernard Heuvelmans coined the term to describe his investigations of animals unknown to science.

2. Mid-men, the male versions of midwives, are called accouchers.

7. The apparatus used in alcohol distilleries for freeing the spirit from water is called the dephlegmator.

3. The working section of a piano is called the action.

8. One that speaks two languages - is bilingual - can be said to be diglot.

4. The plastic things on the end of shoelaces are called aglets.

9. Ducks are never male. The males of the species are called drakes.

5. The distance that a place holder falls from a glass when it is lifted (you know, place holders sometimes get stuck to the bottom of a cold glass when you lift the glass) is called a bevemeter.

10. Shoemakers are commonly called cobblers but correctly speaking a cobbler is a shoe repairmen. A shoemaker is a cordwainer.

6. The study of creatures such as Bigfoot, the chupacabra, and the Loch Ness monster is called cryptozoology.

11. The device at the intersection of two railroad tracks to permit the wheels and flanges on one track to cross or branch for the other is called a frog.

g e n i clos z a up e z Am malsonth weonbaulzwieth! th s Ani This mand perBusy Be Honeybees account for 80 per cent of all insect pollination. Without such pollination, we would see a significant decrease in the yield of fruits and vegetables. Bees collect 66lbs of pollen per year, per hive. Pollen is one of the richest and purest natural foods, consisting of up to 35% protein, 10% sugars, carbohydrates, enzymes, minerals, and vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, B5, C, H, and R. "Bee venom therapy" is widely practiced overseas and by some in the USA to address health problems such as arthritis,

neuralgia, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and even MS. There is only one queen bee per hive. The queen is the only bee with fully developed ovaries. A queen bee can live for 3-5 years. The queen mates only once with several male (drone) bees, and will remain fertile for life. She lays up to 2000 eggs per day. All worker bees are female, but they are not able to reproduce. Worker bees live for 4-9 months during the winter season, but only 6 weeks during the busy summer months (they literally work themselves to death). Nearly all of the bees in a hive are worker bees. A hive consists of 20,000 - 30,000 bees in the winter, and over 60,000 - 80,000 bees in the summer. The worker bees sequentially take on a series of specific chores

A single honeybee will visit 50-100 flowers on a single trip out of the hive. Honey if the ONLY food that includes all the substances necessary to sustain life, including water.

Honeybees fly at 15 miles per hour.

It would take about 1 ounce of honey to fuel a honeybee’s flight around the world.

Honeybees wings stroke 11,400 times per minute, thus making their distinctive buzz. Honeybees have five eyes, 3 small ones on top of the head and two big ones in front. They also have hair on their eyes!

Star Wars You know you're a Star Wars geek when... You pass out while trying to move a pencil across the desk with the Force. You get jealous of luke because his light saber is double the size of yours. You would love to have Frank Oz stick his hand up your butt so you can be as wise as Yoda You get into a fight, you automatically find yourself reaching for a light saber... Your room is filthy except for your "Star Wars Area." You name your right hand 'Leia'

February tips After the rains of last month make sure all the damages are sorted: fences, tracks, gutters, pipes etc.

You think you are the life of the party because you imitate Yoda's voice and have him say things a Jedi master wouldn't say. Whenever you get in trouble, you mutter "I have a bad feeling about this." You listen for Obi-Wan while attempting to reverse park. You don't have any money to buy food or clothes but you have a kick-arse STAR WARS collection. You swear you saw Obi-Wan in your Cheerios. You start to see visions of Ben Kenobi telling you to go to bed

Iceland Store Raise Cash For Charity Fundraising for Cudeca Iceland employees, Dominic and Sam, got their walking boots on and participated in a 5km sponsored walk in aid of Cudeca. Dominic’s Dad died of cancer in September 2008, and he was determined to do something in his memory and raise funds for the Hospice. Thanks to all their colleagues & friends who sponsored them. They raised a fabulous total of nearly 400€. Anne, who works in the Iceland store café also raised funds for Cudeca. She appealed for voluntary donations towards a hamper, then raffled it in the store, raising a fantastic 73€ from customers and staff. Cudeca sends sincere thanks to all involved for the invaluable support. Dominic is delighted to donate the money to such a

worthwhile cause and is sure his dad would be proud.

Be Prepared Terrorist Threats.... The English are feeling the pinch in relation to recent terrorist threats and have raised their security level from "Miffed" to "Peeved." Soon, though, security levels may be raised yet again to "Irritated" or even "A Bit Cross." The English have not been "A Bit Cross" since the blitz in 1940 when tea supplies all but ran out. Terrorists have been re-categorized from "Tiresome" to a "Bloody Nuisance." The last time the British issued a "Bloody Nuisance" warning level was during the great fire of 1666. The Scots raised their threat level from "Pissed Off" to "Let's get the B******s." They don't have any other levels. This is the reason they have been used on the front line in the British army for the last 300 years. The French government announced yesterday that it has raised its terror alert level from "Run" to "Hide". The only two higher Save up to 50% compared to conventional retaining walls

levels in France are "Collaborate" and "Surrender." The rise was precipitated by a recent fire that destroyed France 's white flag factory, effectively paralysing the country's military capability. It's not only the French who are on a heightened level of alert. Italy has increased the alert level from "Shout loudly and excitedly" to "Elaborate Military Posturing." Two more levels remain: "Ineffective Combat Operations" and "Change Sides." The Germans also increased their alert state from "Disdainful Arrogance" to "Dress in Uniform and Sing Marching Songs." They also have two higher levels: "Invade a Neighbour" and "Lose". Belgians, on the other hand, are all on holiday as usual, and the only threat they are worried about is NATO pulling out of Brussels. The Spanish are all excited to see their new submarines ready to deploy. These beautifully designed subs have glass bottoms so the new Spanish navy can get

a really good look at the old Spanish navy. Americans meanwhile and as usual are carrying out pre-emptive strikes, on all of their allies, just in case. And in the southern hemisphere... New Zealand has also raised its security levels - from "baaa" to "BAAAA!". Due to continuing defense cutbacks (the airforce being a squadron of spotty teenagers flying paper aeroplanes and the navy some toy boats in the Prime Minister's bath), New Zealand only has one more level of escalation, which is "S***, I hope Australia will come and rescue us". Australia, meanwhile, has raised its security level from "No worries" to "She'll be right, mate". Three more escalation levels remain: "Crikey!", "I think we'll need to cancel the barbie this weekend" and "The barbie is cancelled". So far no situation has ever warranted use of the final escalation level.

Factory Buy & Sell It’s the time of the year to de-junk and de-clutter our lives – out with the old and in with the new! But what do you do with all your unwanted items? If you’re like me, you probably bag them up and shove them in the garage, or on the shelf at the top of the wardrobe. There they remain, collecting dust, until one day you see sense and throw the lot in a skip. However, there is another option. Why not receive money for your old items, and then you can put it towards buying some brand new items?! At Factory Buy & Sell, on Poligono La Peña, in Algarrobo, they take care of selling for you. Just bring them the items and then wait until you can collect your money. What a fantastic service! I’ll certainly be offloading some stuff there very soon. The items they sell include sports equipment, saunas, white goods, electrical items, musical instruments, decoration, and much, much more! Factory Buy & Sell is next to the ITV centre on the way to Algarrobo Pueblo, Nave, 11. See advert opposite and don’t forget to mention that you saw the advert in The Sentinella!

BEM idiomas Read all about my progress learning Spainsh Well, I can honestly say that I haven't yet had the motivation to get back into the swing of my Spanish lessons. Don't get me wrong. I've been driving the twenty minute journey and attending my two hour lesson, but my heart just isn't in it. That's never a good sign, but the idea of failure is even worse. Failure isn't in my blood! What has demotivated me is the fact that I'm being taught a new pre-tense, I remember the same de-motivation last time I was being taught a new pre-tense too. My tutor, Sandra, will have the joy of teaching me this same pre-tense week after week, after week, until I finally crack it (or crack up)! Something that is proving a great help for me, is the i-pod I received for Christmas. A couple of Spanish programmes had been downloaded on it to help me learn. A Postcard From... Jan and Arthur Berry, from Caleta de Velez, recently took off for a safari in Kenya, Africa. Read about their holiday in the last part of the series… It happened to be hubbie’s birthday while we were at the Voyager, and once the hotel staff knew, they went out of their way to help him celebrate. We were very keen to see some real village life so we took a taxi to Mtwapa Village where we were shown around by some young men. We were glad we went, but very saddened by the conditions these people lived in. We visited three classes in the local school. The children were beautiful and so pleased to see us (especially as we took sweets)! They were all well-behaved and it was interesting to see them learning English. They are children, the same as our children, yet their lives are so different. Back at the hotel, we were invited to dine at the Captain’s table on our last night. We sipped cocktails on the lawn, followed by a nice meal, with two officers and three other guests. The officers were keen for our opinion of the hotel and staff – including anything we considered they could do

better. We truly believe they will do whatever is necessary to keep their clients happy. We spent our last afternoon “trading” with the beach boys who had tried relentlessly to sell us their wooden carvings, key rings, sarongs, etc, since we arrived. They would have taken the T-shirts off our backs if we had let them! They finally settled for a bag of clothes that we had worn all holiday,

plus several bars of soap, in exchange for a couple of bow To sum up, we would go back tomorrow; the lovely climate, the warm sea, the fabulous food, but most of all the wonderful people. They need us to go there to bring money into the country, so go and have a fantastic holiday and help them at the same time. You won’t regret it!

Random Joke The Horse and the Chick On the farm lived a chicken and a horse, both of whom loved to play together. One day, the two were playing when the horse fell into a bog and began to sink. Scared for his life, the horse whinnied for the chicken to go get the farmer for help! Off the chicken ran, back to the farm. Arriving at the farm, he searched and searched for the farmer, but to no avail, for he had gone to town with the only tractor. Running around, the chicken spied the farmer's new Z-4 series BMW. Finding the keys inside, the chicken sped off with a length of rope, hoping he still had time to save his friend's life. Back at the bog, the horse was surprised, but happy, to see the chicken arrive in the shiny BMW, and he managed to get a hold of the loop of rope the chicken tossed to him. After tying the other end to the rear

bumper of the farmer's car, the chicken then drove slowly forward and, with the aid of the powerful car, rescued the horse! Happy and proud, the chicken drove the BMW back to the farmhouse, and the farmer was none the wiser when he returned. The friendship between the two animals was cemented: best buddies, best pals. A few weeks later, the chicken fell into a mud pit, and soon, he too, began to sink and cried out to the horse to save his life! The horse thought a moment, walked over, and straddled the large puddle. Looking underneath, he told the chicken to grab his "thing" and he would then lift him out of the pit. The chicken got a good grip, and the horse pulled him up and out, saving his life. The moral of the story? When you're hung like a horse, you don't need a BMW to pick up chicks!

Random Joke An Aussie truckie walks into an outback cafe' with a full-grown emu behind him. The waitress asks them for their orders. The truckie says, 'A hamburger, chips and a coke,' and turns to the emu, 'What's yours?' 'I'll have the same,' says the emu. A short time later the waitress returns with the order 'That will be $9.40 please,' and he reaches into his pocket and pulls out the exact change for payment..The next day, the man and the emu come again and he says, A hamburger, chips and a coke.' The emu says, 'I'll have the same.' Again the truckie reaches into his pocket and pays with exact change. This becomes routine until the two enter again. 'The usual?' asks the waitress. 'No, it's Friday night, so I'll have a steak, baked potato and a salad,' says the man. 'Same,' says the emu. Shortly the waitress brings the order and says, 'That will be $32.62.' Once again the man pulls the exact change out of his pocket and places it on the table. The waitress cannot hold back

her curiosity any longer. 'Excuse me how do you manage to always come up with the exact change in your pocket every time?' 'Well, love' says the truckie, 'a few years ago, I was cleaning out the back shed, and found an old lamp. When I rubbed it, a Genie appeared and offered me two wishes. My first wish was that if I ever had to pay for anything, I would just put my hand in my pocket and the right amount of money would always be there.' 'That's brilliant!' says the waitress. 'Most people would ask for a million dollars or something, but you'll always be as rich as you want for as long as you live!' 'That's right. Whether it's a gallon of milk or a Rolls Royce, the exact money is always there,' says the man. The waitress asks, 'What's with the bloody emu?' The truckie sighs, pauses, and answers, 'My second wish was for a tall bird with a big arse and long legs, who agrees with everything I say.'

De Cotta Law By Myles Jackson, a Barrister-at-Law De Cotta McKenna & Santafé If you're buying a second hand car, take note of the following pointers. Upon identifying your car, ask the vendor to produce three documents. First, the Permiso de Circulación (Log Book) confirming the car’s number plate, chassis number, make, model, year of registration and the owner’s name and address. Check the listed owner’s details match his identification documents and check the car’s registered details match those of the car you want to actually buy. Check the Inspección Técnica or ITV (MOT certificate). The ITV confirms the car’s details and roadworthiness. Check the ITV is not out of date. If it is or is about

to expire, ask that the car passes its ITV as a condition of completion, as there may be a problem that the owner knows about but cannot readily be discerned by yourself. The vendor should show you his receipt for payment of the Impuesto Sobre Vehiculos (Vehicle Licence Tax) as this confirms that the annual road tax has been paid. If he doesn’t and hasn’t, you may become liable for the outstanding taxes. If buying through a dealer, he should have all the paperwork and be able to oversee transfer of ownership. If buying privately, you need to collate the above paperwork, complete the Solicitud (formal transfer request form) and present such to the Jefatura de Tráfico (DVLA). Pitch up at Tráfico with your passport, residencia/NIE card/certificate, certificate of empadronamiento and driving licence, expecting the worst and hoping for the best. Ideally, the vendor should accompany you. Typically, the vendor will be happy to

De Cotta Law (continued) accompany you and spend the day queuing as he will not wish to hand you the documents without seeing his money. Similarly, you should not be willing to pay until the registration documents have been transferred into your name. You will both need to complete the transfer form and pay the 50€ admin fee in cash, whereupon you’ll join another queue to submit the transfer form, transfer fee receipt and your identification documents (and photocopies) so that the transfer might be formally registered. Tráfico may reveal an embargo on the car, effectively scuppering sale until the seller pays his creditors. Similarly, there may be outstanding traffic fines. In such circumstances, accompany the seller to the bank, have him withdraw the money and pay the fines there and then. If he can’t pay on the day, grit your teeth and return on another. Upon completion of transfer, attend your Town Hall and confirm the change of ownership.

So long as you examine the cars and the seller’s original documentation, you ought to be able to weed out dodgy motors and scamsters. If the paperwork doesn’t stack up, you’re probably best to cut your losses and move on – after all, it is a buyer’s market. Ideas For 2010 The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari is a fantastic book - my fave read of 2009. The author, Robin Sharma, shares 62 ideas of how to make the most out of the year ahead... 1. Remember that leadership isn’t about your position. It’s about your influence. 2. Get fit like a pro athlete.

7. Believe in your dreams (even when others laugh at them). 8. Measure your success, not by your net worth but by your self worth (and how happy you feel). 9. Take an intelligent risk every 24 hours. No try-No Win. 10. Read “Buffett: The Making of an American Capitalist”.

3. Lift people up versus tearing people down.

11. Watch “Man on Wire”.

4. Protect your good name. An impeccable reputation takes a lifetime to build. And 60 seconds to lose.

12. Regardless of your title at work, be a team builder.

5. Surround yourself with positive, ethical people who are committed to excellence.

13. Remember that business is all about relationships and human connections.

6. Remember that even a 1% daily innovation rate amounts to at least a 100% rate of innovation in 100 days.

14. Say “please” more. 15. Say “thank you” more.

Redwell Infrared Heating Good Idea. Have you ever had such a good idea that you wanted to share it with everyone? Or have you ever found such a good product that you can’t understand why every household doesn’t have one? We have. My wife and I have felt so cold in the Spanish winters that we were practically in despair until we discovered infra-red heating panels. Made in Austria, to exacting and beautiful standards, they keep our home remarkably warm for a very modest cost. For example, our lounge diner is 9m x 4m with a 4m high ceiling and in normal winter temperatures it is kept lovely and warm by consuming just 1.2 kilowatts of electricity. When the temperatures dropped to near freezing in January this year we did have to increase this to 2.1 kilowatts, but that’s not a lot considering the size of the room. As a comparison, one bar of an electric fire

consumes 1 kilowatt, a kettle up to 3 kilowatts and air conditioning – well that can be massive! These are not the €60 conventional electric heaters which are heavily advertised and can have a place in the home (provided you sit alongside them). Redwell infra-red panels are absolutely top quality items that have been developed from industrial to domestic use. Infra-red was originally used to heat vast areas like warehouses, aircraft hangers and garages, which require warmth even when huge doors remain open. If they can achieve warmth in this type of environment, imagine what they can do for your home! Why not call to arrange an appointment and experience these heaters while the worst of the Spanish winter is upon us? Call Peter on 628 690 326 (main advert below)

Valentine's Day Superstitions

Hi Keidi, This is to say thank you for the voucher for one Menu del Dia at El Salmon in Torre del Mar. My husband & I went with two friends today and enjoyed a fantastic meal. We were made very welcome, great food & service, a choice of 3 starters, main courses & puddings. We enjoyed delicious hot rolls with butter and very well priced vino tinto de la casa. A very enjoyable lunch. We will be back and will also tell all our friends. Dorothy & Peter Girvan. Canillas de Aceituno

It is said that the kind of bird a girl watches on Valentine's Day predicts her future husband.

Congratulations! It was a great start to the year for Mr John Birmingham, from Torre del Mar, who walked away with this year’s Christmas hamper, from The Sentinella and Arkwright’s. John collected his prize from Arkwrights in Puente don Manuel just after Christmas and hopefully he has enjoyed tucking into all the lovely goodies!

For instance: Sparrow - a poor man, Owl remain spinster, Bluebird - a happy ma, Blackbird - a priest or clergyman, Crossbill - an argumentative man If an apple is cut in half, the number of seeds found inside the fruit will indicate the number of children that individual will have. To be awoken by a kiss on Valentine's Day is considered lucky. On Valentine's Day, the first guy's name you read in the paper or hear on the TV or radio will be the name of the man you will marry. If you see a squirrel on Valentine's Day, you will marry a cheapskate who will hoard all your money.

The Word Throne Welcome to this new monthly feature, where we explore the different elements of writing and getting published. I like to view these elements as a ‘toolbox.’ If your tool-box is full then you’re head and shoulders above many other writers out there. If your box only contains one or two tools and they’re a bit on the rusty side, then they’ll need some care and attention until they sparkle again. No matter what the current state of your toolbox, hopefully you’ll find this monthly article informative, inspiring and encouraging. This first article is a welcome piece, breaking into the page, so to speak. Next month we’ll be looking at the first tool in the box; Mindset. It’s also one of the most important tools and you’ll learn why soon.

On a final note, if there are any writers living in the areas of Torre del Mar, Torrox Costa, Nerja, or Puente don Manuel, who are interested in joining a new Writer’s Group, please contact me on 610 976 284. Throughout the course of the year I’ll be on the look-out for sparkly pieces to print in The Sentinella magazine, so please email them to for consideration. There’s nothing like seeing your name in print! For now I suggest that you load up the word processor and continue tapping those keys… With Love The Word Queen xx (see advert below)

Random Joke An old retired sailor, puts on his old uniform and heads for the docks once more, for old times sake. He engages a prostitute and takes her up to a room. He's soon going at it as well as he can for a guy his age, but needing some reassurance, he asks, 'How am I doing??

The prostitute replies, 'Well, old sailor, you're doing about three knots' 'Three knots?' he asks. 'What's that supposed to mean??' She says, 'You're knot hard, you're knot in, and you're knot getting your money back.'

) : a h a h s e k o J An armed hooded robber bursts into the Bank of Ireland and forces the tellers to load a sack full of cash. As he is on his way out the door with the loot, one brave Irish customer grabs the hood and pulls it off revealing the robber's face. The robber shoots the guy in the head without hesitation! He then looks around the bank to see if anyone else has seen him. One of the tellers is looking straight at him and the robber walks over and calmly shoots him in the head also. Everyone by now is very scared and looking down at the floor. "Did anyone else see my face?" calls the robber. There is a few moments silence then one elderly Irish gent, looking down, tentatively raises his hand and says, "I think me wife may have caught a glimpse" *************** A bride on her wedding night says to her husband 'I must confess darling, I was a hooker!'. He says 'That's all right, dear. Your past is your past, but I must admit that I find it quite erotic. Tell me about it'. She replies 'Well, my name was Nigel, and I played for Wigan ! (Hooker is a certain position in a game of rugby and Wigan are a famous team over here) *************** The teacher asked the class to use the word 'fascinate' in a sentence. Molly put up her hand and said, 'My family went to my granddad's farm, and we all saw his pet sheep. It was fascinating.' The teacher said, 'That was good, but I wanted you to use the word 'fascinate, not fascinating'. Sally raised her hand. She said, 'My family went to see Rock City and I was 'fascinated.' The teacher said, 'Well, that was good Sally, but I wanted you to use the word 'fascinate.' Little Johnny raised his hand. The teacher

hesitated because she had been burned by Little Johnny before. He always managed to mangle words and often embarrassed her. She finally decided there was no way he could damage the word 'fascinate', so she called on him. Johnny said, 'My aunt Gina has a sweater with ten buttons, but her tits are so big she can only fasten eight.' The teacher sat down and cried. *************** A burglar broke into a house one night. He shined his torch around, looking for valuables when a voice in the dark said, 'Jesus is watching you.' He nearly jumped out of his skin, clicked his torch off, and froze. When he heard nothing more, after a bit, he shook his head and continued. Just as he pulled the stereo out so he could disconnect the wires, clear as a bell he heard 'Jesus is watching you.' Freaked out, he shined his light around frantically, looking for the source of the voice. Finally, in the corner of the room, his torch beam came to rest on a parrot. 'Did you say that?' he hissed at the parrot. 'Yep', the parrot confessed, then squawked, 'I'm just trying to warn you that he is watching you.' The burglar relaxed. 'Warn me, huh? Who in the world are you?' Moses,' replied the bird. 'Moses?' the burglar laughed. 'What kind of people would name a bird Moses?' 'The kind of people that would name a Rottweiler Jesus.' *************** What's the ideal weight for a mother-inlaw? About 2.3lbs including the urn.

Poem for the Elderly Enjoy life! Another year has passed And we’re all a little older. Last summer felt much hotter And winter seems much colder. I rack my brain for happy thoughts To put down on my pad. But lots of things that come to mind Just make me kind of sad. There was a time not long ago When life was quite a blast. Now I fully understand About ‘Living in the Past.’ We used to go to friend’s homes Baseball games and lunches. Now we go to therapy, to hospitals And after-funeral brunches. We used to have hangovers From parties that were gay.

Now we suffer body aches And sleep the night away. We used to go out dining And couldn’t get our fill. Now we ask for doggie bags, Come home and take a pill. We used to travel often To places near and far. Now we get backaches, From riding in the car. We used to go out shopping For new clothing at the mall. But now we never bother… All the sizes are too small. That, my friend, is how life is, And now my tale is told. So, enjoy each day and live it up, Before you’re too damn old!

Bedroom Golf Hole in one! Here are the rules of the game. Each player should furnish his own equipment for play normally one club and two balls. Play on the course should be approved by the owner of the hole. Unlike outdoor golf, the object is to get the club in the hole and keep the balls out. For most effective play, the club should have a firm shaft. Course owners are permitted to check the shaft stiffness before play. Course owners reserve the right to restrict club length to avoid damage to the hole. The object of the game is to take as many strokes as necessary until the course owner is satisfied that play is complete. Failure to do so may result in being denied permission to play the course again. It is considered bad form to begin playing the hole immediately upon arrival at the course. The experienced player will normally take time to admire the entire course with special attention to the well formed bunkers. Players are cautioned not to mention other courses they have played, or are currently playing, to the owner of the course being played. Upset course owners have been known to damage players equipment for this reason. Players are encouraged to bring proper rain gear for their own protection. Players should assure themselves that their match has been properly scheduled, particularly when a new course is being played for the firsttime. Previous players have been known to become irate if they discover someone else playing on what they considered to be a private course. Players should not assume that a course is in shape for play at all times. Some play-

ers may be embarrassed if they find the course to be temporarily under repair. Players are advised to be extremely tactful in this situation. More advanced players will find alternative means of play when this is the case. The course owner is responsible for manicuring and pruning any bush around the hole to allow for improved viewing of, alignment with, and approach to the hole.Players are advised to obtain the course owners permission before attempting to play the back nine.Slow play is encouraged. However players should be prepared to proceed at a quicker pace, at least temporarily at the course owners request. It is considered outstanding performance, time permitting, to play the same hole several times in one match.
