Merry Christmas Dear Sentinella Readers! Welcome to your new look The Sentinella, now all glossy with MORE colour pages than ever before, just in time for Chrimbo!! The time of the year of overspending on presents and wondering what the hell to buy him this year has thrust itself upon us once again. Men try and make our lives easier this year and actually have an interest in something apart from PSP and golf! Or better still just give us a list of what you want. And please do remember that we like to be spoilt. We don’t like electronic items just because you do. We do like girly things – just look for anything pink and frilly (apart from the first thing that comes into your head…tut tut!!) For all you food-lovers out there (am thinking there’s a fair few) why not try your luck at The Sentinella Christmas competition, where you can win a hamper packed to the seams with all those treats we indulge in throughout the festive season. See page 105 for further details. I have started my Christmas shopping early this year in a bid to have it all done and dusted (wrapped and all) by the middle of December. I despise the last minute rush and the long panicky queues, where people appear to impulse buy under vast mounds of pressure. Every year I make my parents up a stocking. Some may say they are past all that, but actually they love their stockings and of course I do exchange them on Christmas Eve for mine!

I cram it with all sorts of odds and ends and I love choosing the gifts to slot inside. For anyone wondering what to buy parents just buy a stocking and whisk them right back to their childhood days. So 2009 is on our doorsteps and the start of a New Year always feels exciting and hopeful, as we wonder how our lives will unfold in the next 12 months. Will be it a master-piece or a disaster-piece?! The Sentinella has lots up its sleeve for the coming year so keep your eyes posted for all our newbies and offers. And if you are craving a big change in the New Year, you want to improve your social life, or you are considering relocating to pastures new then don’t forget The Sentinella Business Opportunity, which is now offering five couples a very decent income every month (see page 23). Darren and Sharon Barker of The Sentinella Costa West (Marbella) are delighted with their progress within the last eight months and Darren recently said the following: “With two young children The Sentinella magazine fits in perfectly with our lives in Spain. We both enjoy being out and about meeting people and find we can juggle our work to fit around our family life. With some hard work and dedication this is turning into a very rewarding opportunity."

So there you are – you’ve heard it from the horse’s mouth! Listen to these words of wisdom and consider your options in 2009...

Editor (of the original little mag)! Thieves steal church

Strange News

A church has vanished from the Russian village where it stood for almost 200 years. The Church of Christ's Resurrection, in the central Russian village of Komarovo, was built in 1809 but in early October someone took it away brick by 4

brick. Komarovo is in the Ivanovo region, north-east of Moscow. The church was not in use but clergy had been considering resuming services there. A survey of the large, two-storey church a few months ago found that it was structurally sound, but now all that remains are the foundations and sections of walls."

Britain's most irritating expressions

Researchers at Oxford University have compiled a top ten of the most irritating expressions. Top of the list was "at the end of the day", followed by "fairly unique". Also making the top ten is the grammatically incorrect "shouldn't of", instead of "shouldn't have". The phrases appear in a book called Damp Squid, named after the mistake of confusing a squid with a squib. Other irritating phrases in the top ten include “with all due respect”, “it’s a nightmare” and “It’s not rocket science.”

Man glued to toilet

A man had to be taken to hospital attached to a toilet after super-glue was deliberately smeared on the seat. Fire fighters were unable to free the man and were forced to remove the stainless steel loo with the man still attached. The 35-year-old was in a public toilet cubicle in Brierley Hill in the West Midlands when he became stuck. He was taken to hospital where doctors had to get into the ambulance before using chemicals to free him. It is thought the glue had been smeared on the toilet seat by a prankster. The toilet was later taken back to the public convenience and re-installed.

Axces Property Direct

Axces Property Direct is a new and exciting advertising property website for selling, renting or exchanging your property direct to the buyer. We are not an estate agent and do not charge a commission fee when a sale is completed.

The internet has made selling your home easier than you ever thought. As over 80% of people now use the internet to find their next property, selling your property direct is becoming more and more popular worldwide. As a result of our experiences when looking from the UK for properties to rent and buy in Spain, we were often disappointed with the quality of information available, rarely was there a brochure, often only basic information about the property and poor quality photographs. All of which made it very frustrating when trying to find a suitable property. The decision to start up this business was based on the frustrations of our experiences and it was felt that there could be an alternative choice on how properties can be bought, sold and rented in Spain. Today, with all the technologies available, there is no excuse not to market your property professionally. Q. What is the most expensive possession you will ever sell? A. Your property! Q. What is the hardest thing to sell at the moment? A. Your property! Then we believe that it is time to invest in the sale of your property and make it STAND OUT. Think about what you look for when you

are buying a property, what are your first impressions? A short property paragraph with a few photographs is not informative or impressive enough. What would make you want to board an aeroplane to view a property? If we think about what we want or expect, then you can make sure that you are offering the same when selling, renting or exchanging your property. Our Premier Service will provide you with a quality online property brochure that includes photographs, property description, room dimensions, floor plan and more. We will advertise your property on our website, the internet and other property portals as well as local magazines in Spain. Selling direct puts you in control, you can build a relationship with your potential buyer, know who is viewing your property, take advantage of highlighting the positive features of your property and you can have some flexibility on negotiating the final price of your property knowing you will not have to pay out thousand’s of Euros in sales commission fees. We all know it’s a tough time to sell a property, but reports are telling us that there are buyers out there, not necessarily from the UK but people from other European countries are buying property in Spain. We all know that property sales take much longer these days which is why more than ever before your property needs to STAND OUT from the crowd. It is time to invest in the sale of your property and use the Premier Service from Axces Property Direct. Be positive and proud of your house, make sure it stands out. The January “blues” are only around the corner, this is the time when many people start looking to change homes, make sure your property is listed on in readiness. Please feel free to call or email Michelle to find out more about listing your property on: and selling your property DIRECT.

For instance, 100 grams of cricket contains only 121 calories, less than half of beef. A cricket contains only 5,5 grams of fat, compared to 21,2g of beef. Beef contains more protein (23,5g - a cricket 12.9g) but the 100g of cricket also contains 5,1g of carbohydrates, 75,8 mg calcium, 185,3 mg phosphorous, 9,5 mg iron, thiamin, riboflavin, and niacin. 2. Christmas Party Tips

Don’t mess up this Christmas, take note of our handy tips.

1. Order invitations online. Try... or If the party will be more casual, call or email. Don’t forget about e-cards!

2. Make a to-do list. What do you need to bake, clean or rearrange before the party? Think of the big picture first, then break it down and schedule the details.

3. Make a timetable. When serving dinner parties, work out all the details on paper. Work backwards from serving, to baking, to preheating the oven to food prep. If you employ this kind of organisation, everything should flow smoothly.

4. Try an open house or brunch. If a party still seems overwhelming, keep it simple and host an open house or brunch. If you define the hours the whole process will seem less daunting. Do as much advanced preparation as possible. Buffets are so much easier than arranging a sit-down meal. It allows you to prepare platters of food in advance. You can spend time with your guests, instead of the kitchen. Consider salmon, olives, prosciutto, salami and cheeses. Experiment with spiced hot chocolate or hand-blended teas. Pull out the serving pieces and linens a few days before and stage the buffet table. Decide on the music and the lighting before anyone arrives 5. Get help. Some people choose to cater because it takes away the stress and allows them to enjoy the party

Why We Love Children

From the mouths of babes!

1. A nursery school pupil told his teacher he'd found a cat, but it was dead. 'How do you know that the cat was dead?' she asked her pupil. 'Because I pissed in its ear and it didn't move,' answered the child innocently. 'You did WHAT?' the teacher exclaimed in surprise. 'You know,' explained the boy, 'I leaned over and went 'Pssst' and it didn't move' 2. A small boy is sent to bed by his father.. Five minutes later.....'Da-ad....' 'What?' 'I'm thirsty. Can you bring a drink of water?' 'No, You had your chance. Lights out.' Five minutes later: 'Da-aaaad.....' 'WHAT?' 'I'm THIRSTY. Can I have a drink of water??' 'I told you NO! If you ask again, I'll have to smack you!!' Five minutes later......'Daaaa-aaaad.....' 'WHAT!' 'When you come in to smack me, can you bring a drink of water?'

3. One summer evening during a violent thunderstorm a mother was tucking her son into bed. She was about to turn off the light when he asked with a tremor in his voice, 'Mummy, will you sleep with me tonight?' The mother smiled and gave him a re-

assuring hug. 'I can't dear,' she said. 'I have to sleep in Daddy's room.' A long silence was broken at last by his shaky little voice, 'The big sissy.'

4. It was that time, during the Sunday morning service, for the children's sermon. All the children were invited to come forward. One little girl was wearing a particularly pretty dress and, as she sat down, the minister leaned over and said, 'That is a very pretty dress. Is it your Easter Dress?' The little girl replied, directly into the minister's clip-on microphone, 'Yes, and my Mum says it's a bitch to iron.'

5. When I was six months pregnant with my third child, my three year old came into the room when I was just getting ready to get into the shower. She said, 'Mummy, you are getting fat!' I replied, 'Yes, honey, remember Mummy has a baby growing in her tummy.' 'I know,' she replied, but what's growing in your bum?'

6. A little girl goes to the barber shop with her father. She stands next to the barber chair, while her dad gets his hair cut, eating a snack cake The barber says to her, 'Sweetheart, you're gonna get hair on your muffin.' She says, 'Yes, I know, and I'm gonna get boobs too

Good, Bad & Ugly

A bit of bad news as this is the last Good Bad Ugly to meet your eyes, as we have now exhausted the entire alphabet! But we at The Sentinella like our ABCs so much that from the Jan ‘09 edition we will be journeying back through the maze of letters to bring you ‘Things We Miss From the UK’ …And ‘Things We Don’t’. Here we bring you the X Y and Zs The Good

Expats Yeah, we’re a pretty good bunch aren’t we? Well most of us anyway. Football hooligans, alcoholics, sun worshippers, villa owners and druggies not included here (just kidding).

Yachts One day (soon of course) I will own one and take off to the seas whenever I please for a spot of dolphin spotting and sun ray collecting. I love going to Marbella and just hanging out amidst them (and the expensive cars) imagining the day when mine has surfaced. The Bad ZZZZZ (sleep)

Poligono la Panoleta C/Juan Gris No 5 29700 Velez Malaga Tel: 952 501 543

In the summer it is hard to get any decent shut eye, as it is so damn hot and sticky. If you are one of those lucky souls with air con then maybe you drift off no problem, but for the rest of us counting sheep will have to suffice. The Ugly

Zebra Crossings Just what clever Spaniard invented the ludicrous rule that cars, lorries and ten ton trailers do not have to stop unless the pedestrian in question has actually planted a foot on the zebra crossing? How ridiculous. They as may just say “tough luck pedestrians you’re all gonna be splatted to death.” To be honest even as a driver I have nearly had a few accidents when the car in front has suddenly slammed on the brakes as a mother with her buggy steps on the road, wishing to cross some time that day.

If you have any things you miss or hated about good old blighty then email and we will try and include under the appropriate letter of the alphabet.

What Car Did Jesus Drive? Please mention The Sentinella when replying to adverts

Most people assume WWJD is for “What would Jesus do?” But the initials really stand for “What would Jesus drive?” One theory is that the Almighty would tool around in an old Plymouth because the Bible says "God drove Adam and Eve out of the Garden of Eden in a Fury.”

But in Psalm 83, God clearly owns a Pontiac and a Geo. The passage urges the Lord to “pursue your enemies with your Tempest and terrify them with your Storm.” Perhaps the Lord favours Dodge pickup trucks, as Moses' followers were warned not to go up a mountain “until the Ram's

horn sounds a long blast.” Some scholars insist that Jesus drove a Honda but didn't like to talk about it. As proof, they cite a verse in John's gospel where Christ tells the crowd, “For I did not speak of my own Accord.”

Meanwhile, Moses rode an old British motorcycle, as evidenced by a Bible passage declaring, “the roar of Moses' Triumph is heard in the hills.”

Joshua drove a Triumph sports car with a hole in its muffler: “Joshua's Triumph was heard throughout the land.” And, following the Master's lead, the Apostles car-pooled in a Honda: “The Apostles were in one Accord.”

Well let's fix our beady eye on the Shareoscope to find out! He has fictitiously bought 8,333 Dixons Group International (DSG INT) shares at 12p per pop. The man in the know said: "The company that owns Currys and PC World is having a bad time with sales and is hoping that Christmas may be better than predicted."

Look out next month for an update on all shares of the year gone by.

Don’t forget the investments we make are fictitious, so please only invest what you can afford to lose!

Christmas Joke

The president of the Festive Foods Corporation was included in a papal audience and he took the opportunity of making a business proposition to the Pope; that if he could arrange for the Lord's Prayer to be changed from "Give us this day our daily bread" to "Give us this day our daily turkey" throughout the whole of Advent and Christmas. In exchange the Festive Foods Corporation would give £20 million to Catholic charities. The Pope declined his offer. A few weeks later the man called the Pope and upped the offer to £50 million; but once again it was turned down. A few weeks before the beginning of Advent the man came back to the Pope with an astonishing offer of £100 million. The Pope considered all the good works that could be done with such a large amount of money and decided to go ahead. The next day he called a special meeting of the Cardinals to let them know about the situation. "Well" said the Pope. "I have good news and bad news. The good news is that we are to receive £100 million. The bad news is that we have lost the Wonderloaf account."

Water or Coke?

1. Seventy-five percent of Americans are chronically dehydrated. (Likely applies to half world population.)

2. In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is often mistaken for hunger. 3. Even MILD dehydration will slow down one's metabolism as much as 3%.

5. Lack of water is the no 1 trigger of daytime fatigue.

6. Preliminary research indicates that 810 glasses of water a day could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.

8. Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%, plus it can slash the risk of breast cancer by 79%, and one is 50% less likely to develop bladder cancer. Coca Cola Facts

1. You can put a T-bone steak in a bowl of coke and it will be gone in two days.

2. To clean a toilet: Pour a can of CocaCola into the toilet bowl and let the "real thing" sit for one hour, then flush clean. The citric acid in Coke removes stains from vitreous china. 11. To remove rust spots from chrome

car bumpers: Rub the bumper with a rumpled-up piece of Reynolds Wrap aluminum foil dipped in Coca-Cola. 3. To clean corrosion from car battery terminals: Pour a can of Coca-Cola over the terminals to bubble away the corrosion. 4. To loosen a rusted bolt: Applying a cloth soaked in Coca-Cola to the rusted bolt for several minutes.

5. To bake a moist ham: Empty a can of Coca-Cola into the baking pan, wrap the ham in alluminum foil, and bake. Thirty minutes before the ham is finished, remove the foil, allowing the drippings to mix with the Coke for a sumptuous brown gravy. 6. To remove grease from clothes: Empty a can of coke into a load of greasy clothes, add detergent, and run through a regular cycle. The Coca-Cola will help loosen grease stains. It will also clean road haze from your windscreen.

7. In many states (in the USA) the highway patrol carries two gallons of Coke in the trunk to remove blood from the highway after a car accident.

9. The distributors of coke have been using it to clean the engines of their trucks for about 20 years! ‘Always Coca Cola’

Amazing Animals

Please mention The Sentinella when replying to adverts Hope you’ve been a good boy or girl this year. The Robins are the ones who know and report back to Santa Claus remember! Here we take a peck at the redbreasted Robin in this month’s Amazing Animals article…

• During the breeding season Robins mostly eat animal material, including earthworms, beetles, grasshoppers, ants, caterpillars, spiders, and snails.

• Robins hunt on lawns, pastures, fields, and meadows, standing still with their heads cocked to one side as though listening for their prey, but actually discovering it by sight.

• Robins nest in deciduous and evergreen trees, shrubs, and hedges, as well as under bridges and on windowsills and other ledges. • Females select the nest site and do the majority of nest building over a two - six day period. • Robins often nest in the same area, or a nearby area, year after year.

• During breeding the female incubates three to four glossy, light blue eggs for 12 to 14 days. • Robins have a high mortality rate, with up to 80 percent of the young dying each year.

The Robin

To advertise in The Sentinella call 664 210 468 or email • Because Robins feed on the ground, young and adult birds are vulnerable to attacks by domestic cats. . • The size of a Robin’s territory is onethird of an acre to several acres. If another male intrudes, he will fly at the intruder to try to scare him away. If that fails, he will dive-bomb the intruder and try to hit him chest to chest. This behaviour is also seen when a male Robin mistakes his image in a window for an opponent. Homeowners often watch in amazement as the male Robin beats himself silly against the glass, under the impression that he is attacking another Robin.

Don’t forget children if you see a Robin between now and Christmas, Father Christmas has sent him to see if you are being good enough to get prezzies this year.

Problem Page with Aunt Sally

This month Aunt Sally tackles Temper Tantrums

(Q) Why does my child have temper tantrums and what can I do? Emma in Benamocarra (A) Children between the ages of 1 to 3 are especially prone to such episodes. These usually occur because your child is beginning to understand a lot more of the words they hear, yet their ability to produce language is so limited. When your child can't express how they feel or what they want to say it amounts to frustration. Don't lose your cool. A tantrum is not a pretty sight, in addition to kicking, screaming or pounding the floor, your child may include throwing things, hitting and even holding their breath to the point of turning blue. Children at this stage of the tantrum are unlikely to listen to reason so to stay with your child during a tantrum is a good idea. Wait and ignore the tantrum, say nothing until they calm down, rather than rewarding negative behaviour. Another method which can be effective with some children is to hold them, if they don't struggle to much this can be comforting for you and the child. REMEMBER YOUR THE ADULT. No matter how long the tantrum goes on fo don't give in or reward for unreasonable behaviour. It can be tempting in public to give in for a quiet life dont! Try not to worry about what other people say or think. You need to set boundaries for your child now.

Obviously if your child is in a unsafe place or starts to hit out at other people or animals then you must move them to somewhere safe. If you’re at home you could put them in there bedroom and stay with them. Once the storm has calmed talk to your child about what happened be patience and loving. As your childs speech develops they will be able to express to you their frustrations by words. Your child is developing independence and like adults don't want to be told what to do or told ‘no’ all the time. Give praise where praise is due and encourage good behaviour. Try to recognise the triggers for your childs tantrum which can help avoid them. Although daily tantrums are perfectly normal, you have to consider other circumstances that might effect them, like moving house or one parents absents from the home. This can provoke a change in your childs behaviour. By the time they reach 3 most have developed in speech and able to communicate better and understand right from wrong Thank you for this question Emma I hope it helps you both. If you would like a question answered please contact Sally Whyte e:mail

How To Make a Christmas Cake

Celebrate Christmas Day in luxury and make this scrummy cake!

Ingredients: •2 (8 ounce) containers candied cherries •1 (8 ounce) container candied mixed citrus peel •2 cups raisins •1 cup dried currants •1 cup dates, pitted and chopped •2 (2.25 ounce) packages blanched slivered almonds •1/2 cup brandy •1/2 cup all-purpose flour •2 cups all-purpose flour •1/2 teaspoon baking soda •1 teaspoon ground cloves •1 teaspoon ground allspice •1 teaspoon ground cinnamon •1/2 teaspoon salt •1 cup butter •2 cups packed brown sugar •6 eggs •3/4 cup molasses •3/4 cup apple juice

Directions: 1. In a medium bowl, combine cherries, citrus peel, raisins, currants, dates, and almonds. Stir in brandy; let stand 2 hours, or overnight. Dredge soaked fruit with 1/2 cup flour. 2. Preheat oven to 275 degrees F (135 degrees C). Grease an 8 x 8 x 3 inch fruit cake pan, line with parchment paper, and grease again. In a small bowl, mix together 2 cups flour, baking soda, cloves, allspice, cinnamon, and salt; set aside. 3. In a large bowl, cream butter until light. Gradually blend in brown sugar and eggs.

Mix together molasses and apple juice. Beat into butter mixture alternately with flour mixture, making 4 dry and 3 liquid additions. Fold in floured fruit. Turn batter into prepared pan. 4. Bake in preheated oven for 3 to 3 1/2 hours, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of cake comes out clean. Remove from pan, and lift off paper. Cool cake completely, then wrap loosely in waxed paper. Store in an airtight container. For the Royal Icing: •4 egg whites •half teaspoon lemon juice •2lb icing sugar •1 teaspoon glycerine

Directions: Put the egg whites and lemon juice in a bowl and beat to a light froth with a wooden spoon. Sift the icing sugar and add to bowl a tablespoon at a time, beating well after each addition, until the icing stands in firm peaks. Add the glycerine. Mix well, cover with a damp cloth or polythene until required.

To ice the cake: Brush almond paste with lightly beaten egg white. Spread the icing over the almond paste roughing up with the flat edge of a knife into small peaks on the top of the cake and larger peaks around the sides. Decorate with bought Father Christmas, Christmas tree and artificial holly.

How does Aisha differ from other Moroccan stores? Its simple, Tracey & Britta have excellent taste when it comes to choosing the finest Morocco has to offer. They stock quality items & unique pieces, something that the majority of Moroccan shops lack.

At Aisha you will find plenty of ideas for Christmas gifts, they have a natural bathroom product range including, cinnamon bath salts, herbal soaps, lavender shampoo, argan oil (nature’s anti-aging skin food) & ghassoul clay, to nourish both your hair & skin. I instantly fell in love with the lavish silver & silk bookmarks, they are lightweight, so they are perfect to pop in the post for Xmas. There is also a culinary section, where you can purchase organic argan oil, genuine Moroccan spices, & natural salt. Hand painted ceramic cups, dinner plates, spice pots & some unique items such as salad utensils carved from lemon wood. Why not hold a Moroccan

dinner party this holiday season; a Tagine (terracotta cooking vessel) is fun, easy & very tasty. It makes an excellent centrepiece when entertaining friends. When you purchase a Tagine from Aisha, they not only supply you with background information on how to use the vessel, & a variety of recipes such as, ‘Beef with Prunes, & Duck with Pears’ but they give you a small bag of complimentary spices, everything you need to get started. They also sell Moroccan teapots & hand painted tea glasses for that authentic mint tea taste. As for keeping warm this winter, you will find an assortment of items, from hand knitted slippers & jumpers, to deep pile wool rugs, dyed with natural colours. At Aisha they also boast a wide range of ambient lighting, from the most exquisite coloured glass ceiling lights that cast colours & patterns around the walls, to simple henna candle lamps, both styles of lighting give an ambient glow to living environment. Something new this month, where we will concentrate on various towns and villages. First up is Algarrobo. See advert on previous page..... Algarrobo is situated 37 kilometres east of Malaga. It has four urban nuclei: Algarrobo Costa, Mezquitilla and Lagos on the coast, and Algarrobo Pueblo 4 kilometres inland and 85 metres above sea level. It lies within the area of Axarquia, on the scenic Route of Sun and Wine, and has a residential population of 4,600 which increases with tourism along the coast during the summer months. Algarrobo Costa, once a fishing village, is

now mostly dedicated to tourism with high rise apartment blocks along the sandy beach. Mezquitilla and Lagos however, are still unspoilt sea-side villages with colourful fishing boats stranded on the sand. The coastal road is dotted with watchtowers built in the 16th century for defense over the beaches. There are two of these at Algarrobo, the Torre Ladeado and the Torre Derecha and another at the small coastal village of Lagos.

Cantueso & Discount Vouchers

Free to Property Owners

A novel marketing scheme is just being introduced by Restaurante Cantueso in Periana. It is designed to encourage holiday-makers to visit their restaurant by offering a discount voucher which can be used on their first visit. Books of vouchers will be available through owners of rental properties for them to give to guests. The vouchers will be free to property owners who register for the scheme and personalised with the name of the property. Nicky Scott at Cantueso says that over the last two years they have noticed just how many tourists make repeat visits, particu-

larly when they discover the restaurant early enough during their stay, and this scheme she hopes will encourage an early visit. There will be no limit to the number of guests in a party who may benefit from the vouchers, and property owners are simply asked to hand over the vouchers at the beginning of the rental period. She also tells us that early indications from a pilot scheme shows that renters appreciate the thoughtfulness of the offer and that it reflects well on the owners. Any property owner who rents to holidaymakers may apply and further information is available from Nicky at Restaurante Cantueso 699 946 213.

We are here

To Velez Malaga

PACOS & VEGETABLES I remember someone commenting about the lazy nature of the Spanish, a myth conjured up by the first package holiday makers of the 1970’s I think, who came home bearing reports of eternal siestas and “mañana”! Nothing could be further from the truth as those of you who have ventured inland to these thriving villages can bear witness to. Benamargosa is predominantly an agricultural village but during the last 20 years I have seen new businesses start and flourish and have watched my previously cash poor neighbours enjoy relevant affluence. With “recession” now on everybody’s lips, without whingeing and whining, those same ever resourceful neighbours and their families are returning to their land. Miguel told me that if you have some land you will never starve and he has sown more vegetables this autumn. Some families admitted that they have not kept a pig for a few years but now the sheds are white washed and the animals installed. Paco breeds rabbits and will do enough to sell as well as for his own use and when I mentioned to Maria that it was a shame that it had rained on All Saints Day after all of the work cleaning and decorating the cemetery, she smiled and happily told me that the dearly departed had sent us the rain because they knew that it was much needed. Old traditions have threatened to die out, after all, who wants to weave a basket for a few centimos? Benamargosa no longer has esparto weavers yet Juan told me that when he and Maria were

newly weds (long before television, plastic bags or nylon string) winter evenings were spent making satchels and water bottle holders whilst she sewed. Much of the furniture was hand made during the shorter daylight hours when working outdoors was cut short. At LA VAQUERIA we are doing our best to revive some of these old crafts whist keeping costs down. Our onsite workshop not only houses the woodcarving classes but also undertakes repair and restoration work and with THE FURNITURE BARNS offering a made to measure facility I suspect that our new master carpenter is going to be kept busy. Born and trained in Holland, he is also fluent in German. With Jorge, originally from Buenos Aires overseeing or undertaking the carving we feel confident that we can not only fix anything but also that our prices are reasonable as we are all growing our own vegetables!! My mission for the month has been to track down the elusive esparto weavers! Quite an adventure as the knowledge tends to be passed from father to son so knocking on doors introducing myself to a long line of Pacos seemed the sensible course. Not a job to be undertaken when you are pushed for time as everybody wants a chat and most Spanish have this remarkable knack of never appearing to be in hurry! I have eaten more cake, bread and home made sausage than I will at Christmas but as yet have still to unearth the genealogical secrets of a particular area in an old part of Velez Malaga where the weavers used to live…watch this space! If you are one of our recent visitors you will know that concrete is finally imminent and THANK YOU once again to everybody who has taken the trouble to come in spite of the soon to be finished road works, WE WISH YOU ALL A VERY MERRY

Balcon de Jatar

A walk on the Wild Side

How often have you turned your back on the sparkling sea-view and wondered what exactly lies behind the mountains which form the backdrop to the Costa del Sol? In Játar, a tiny village on the Northern side of the Sierra Almijara, just 35kms inland from Cómpeta, you can experience first hand a disappearing way of village life. From the comfort of a multi-lingual and beautifully situated B&B you can explore mountains and lakes, with guided walks or rides; enjoy the local atmosphere and food in the bar where hunting is the favourite topic and teenagers prefer horses to motorbikes; or visit the hot springs in Alhama de Granada after a hard days hiking.

Check out everything on offer at the Balcón de Játar at: and treat yourself to a break “on the wild side”. Children and animals welcome. Contact 958 359 127 or 639 687 636.

BE M i d io ma s

When is the right time to learn Spanish?

Is the time ever right I ask myself. Until one day a few weeks ago my just turned four year old! came home from school chatting away in what sounded like perfect Spainsh, but I will never know what she was saying, so I decided the time is now right for me. I contacted BEM idiomas school in Velez Malaga and spoke to Viviane who discussed with me what style of teaching would be best for me. This turned out to begin with, one-to-one lessons. The day had come and I won’t lie I was very nervous but once I met my teacher who made me feel very comfortable and at ease, come the end of the hour lesson I had actually really enjoyed myself and it was a shame it had gone so quick. I started off having two one hour sessions per week and have had just had 3 lessons and already I am finding myself understanding and speaking more Spanish. By the time you read this BEM idiomas would have moved to a brand new location just up the road due to the high demand of classes, as they do not only teach Spanish they also teach English, German and French and also children who want to study English. They have 7 fully qualified teachers all who have University degrees to teach a foreign language. Occasionally if needed more teachers are on stand by

for extra work – so they will always fit you in. BEM idiomas offers a whole range of lessons to suit all needs private one to one or private for two people who prefer not to have more classmates, or groups of 3 – 8 people who have the same level. Generally speaking students prefer to have 2 hours or 4 hours a week as opposed to an intensive course. BEM idiomas’s objective is to make people speak Spanish and to understand better with their emphasis on communication. So if you are thinking about what your New Years resolution could be this year what could be better than taking that plunge and signing up for Spanish lessons. You will be surprised how knowing a bit of Spanish can come in very handy! A couple of phrases to get you started so you can impress your teacher! yo tengo - I have tú tienes - you have él tiene - he has nosotros tenemos - we have vosotros tenéis - we all have ellos tienen - they have

Ed. Travels to Egypt

To advertise in The Sentinella call 664 210 468 or email When I booked a holiday to Egypt I didn’t envisage that would entail rising at 6am (at the latest) every morning to cram as much as humanely possible into each day.

I anticipated a long lay in, followed by a leisurely breakfast from the buffet cart, before maybe setting off to see a temple or two and fitting in some shopping before dinner. But no. “Up tomorrow at 2.30am,” said our Guide as we arrived at the cruise ship at 10pm after a gruelling flight. “Bring your pillows.” That day we didn’t return to somewhere after 9pm and it was up again the following morning at 5am. And that is pretty much the way the whole holiday panned out. For most of the time I was walking around various temples (which all looked similar anyway) bleary eyed and dreaming of when the next sleep would occur. However, on a positive note I was impressed with the temples, covered by hyrogryphics and funny symbols. Our Guide was fantastic and explained the story behind every ruin, with perhaps a tad too much detail at times. The men were of the same mould as Moroccans – staring a tad too fixedly, offering my boyfriend camels for me (at times I think he was tempted) and haggling over items worth a few Euros. But it was a nice change to absorb a bit of their culture. We began the Nile cruise in Aswan then worked along to Luxor before flying to Cairo for some more trips. The City was amazing and opened my eyes to the Egyptian way of life. They have a weird trend there where entire streets are full of a certain kind of shop. So if you want a piece of jewellery you go to the jewellery street, if you want a head scarf (as the women there do) go to the head scarf street, etc, etc… I had a bit of a wrong‘un moment when I decided to wear a skirt on the morning of a visit to the mosque. I was forced to wear a hideous green piece of material

which covered my entire body, which my boyfriend found most humorous. The pyramids were amazing and definitely the best part of the holiday. I did venture inside one too, but only three steps, because I suffer from claustrophobia and the ceiling was just a bit too low for my liking, plus the people coming out were sweating, straining to breath and in some cases crying. I did ride a camel though. We were thrilled to learn we had two whole days spare at the end of the holiday – “free days.” By that point we were feeling a bit too immersed in the Egyptian life so went to see a film at the cinema (in English with Arabic sub titles) and after to McDonalds where we ordered McArabias (not bad!)

On a final note if you think the Spanish can’t drive then you ‘aint seen nothing yet! Keidi Keating (Editor)

Tips for the ladies in year 2008

1. Aspire to be Barbie - the bitch has everything. 2. If the shoe fits - buy one in every colour. 3. Take life with a pinch of salt... A wedge of lime, and a shot of tequila. 4. In need of a support group? - Cocktail hour with the girls! 5. Go on the 30 day diet. (I'm on it and so far I've lost 15 days). 6. When life gets you down - just put on your big girl panties and deal with it. 7. Let your greatest fear be that there is no PMS and this is just your personality. 8. I know I'm in my own little world, but it's ok. They know me here.. 9. Lead me not into temptation, I can find it myself. 10. Don't get your knickers in a knot, it solves nothing; and makes you walk funny. 11. When life gives you lemons in 2008 turn it into lemonade then mix it with vodka. 12. Remember every good looking; sweet, single male is someone else's exboyfriend!

Star Signs

Please mention The Sentinella when replying to adverts Mystic Mag puts up the tree and wraps up your readings for the month of December… Capricorn – You may find yourself visiting the toilet more this month, whether because of a stomach bug, or simply because you are drinking and eating more than usual. Before jumping into anything weigh up all the options or you could end up worse off. Lucky sign – Deep end

Aries – When Christmas Shopping avoid buying chocolates for everyone. They are nice, but perhaps not for your entire list. You could be accused of being lazy! Lucky sign – Flowers perhaps?

turned and said 'look son, don't ever do that again, you scared the daylights out of me!' The passenger apologised and said, 'I didn't realise that a little tap would scare you so much.' The driver replied, 'Sorry, it's not really your fault. I just retired and today is my first day as a cab driver... I've been driving a hearse for the last 45 years.' ---------------------------------------------------A married Irishman went into the confessional and said to his priest, 'I almost had an affair with another woman.' The priest said, 'What do you mean, almost?' The Irishman said, 'Well, we got undressed and rubbed together, but then I stopped.' The priest said, 'Rubbing together is the same as putting it in. You're not to see that woman again. For your penance, say five Hail Mary's and put €50 in the poor box.' The Irishman left the confessional, said his prayers, and then walked over to the poor box. He paused for a moment and then started to leave. The priest, who was watching, quickly ran over to him saying, 'I saw that. You didn't put any money in the poor box!' The Irishman replied, 'Yeah, but I rubbed the €50 on the box, and according to you, that's the same as putting it in!' ---------------------------------------------------A woman went into a post office to buy some stamps for her Christmas cards. What denomination do you want ? asked the lady at the counter. 'Good God!' she replied, Has it come to this? I suppose you'd better give me twenty Catholic and twenty Presbyterian. Two 90-year-old women, Rose and Barb, had been friends all of their lives. When it was clear that Rose was dying, Barb visited her every day. One day Barb said, 'Rose, we both loved playing women's softball all our lives, and we played all through High School. Please do me one favour: when you get to Heaven, somehow you must let me know if there's women's soft-ball there.' Rose looked up at Barb from her death bed and said, 'Barb, you've been my best friend for many years. If it's at all possible, I'll do this favour for you.' Shortly after that, Rose passed on. At midnight the following Friday, Barb was awakened from a sound sleep by a blinding flash of white light and a voice calling out to her, 'Barb, Barb.' 'Who is it?' asked Barb, sitting up suddenly. 'Who is it?' 'Barb -- it's me, Rose.' ‘You're not Rose. Rose just died.' 'I'm telling you, it's me, Rose,' insisted the voice. 'Rose! Where are you?' 'In Heaven,' replied Rose. 'I have some really good news and a little bad news.' 'Tell me the good news first,' said Barb. ‘The good news,' Rose said, 'is that there's Softball in Heaven. Better yet, all of our old buddies who died before us are here, too. Better than that, we're all young again. Better still, it's always springtime, and it never rains or snows. And best of all, we can play softball all we want, and we never get tired.' 'That's fantastic,' said Barb. 'It's beyond my wildest dreams! So what's the bad news?' 'You're pitching Tuesday....' ---------------------------------------------------A taxi passenger tapped the driver on the shoulder to ask him a question. The driver screamed, lost control of the car, nearly hit a bus, went up on the footpath, and stopped centimetres from a shop window. For a second everything went quiet in the cab, then the elderly driver

KENNELS BUSINESS WITH VILLA. Great opportunity. Beautiful 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom property being sold with a well established business. This very unique combination can be found in the countryside surrounding Mondron about 10 mins from the ever growing village of Periana. 10 Best Stay at Home Jobs

Below is a list of ten of the top stay at home options for not only mums, but anyone who has the focus to succeed. 10. Travel Agent This probably won’t earn you big money. However, if you can build a loyal customer base such as family members and friends, it will require little time and it could yield you a few hundred Euros each month. 9. Ebay Seller If you are good at finding bargains this stay-at-home profession may be for you. Take notes on what works from your experiences.

8. Manage Others Paperwork/Life Be self-employed while straightening other peoples lives. It is growing to be more common for busy workers to need help managing their finances and life.

7. Sell for Companies Companies such as Revelon as well as insurance companies allow individuals to sell for them. This stay at home job offers you flexibility without pressure. 6. Childcare If you love children and have great patience and energy, consider this.

5. Webmaster Ok, getting to know how to make web pages is difficult, but once you know the 116

very basics, you can move forward. You can either create websites that are yours, or you can create them for others. There are programs that will help beginners, for example, Dreamweaver.

4. Communicate All That You Know Assist and motivate others as they set up their own business. Beginning a business can be a tedious job, and there is a need for these types of coaches.

3. Pet Care This stay-at-home job isn't exactly all at home, but it is one in which you can interact with members of the community by getting to know their best friends...their pets. Big money is given to those willing to walk dogs, feed pets for families or individuals on holiday, or take a hamster into your home for a week or so. This is easy money especially if you love animals. 2. Tutoring A college degree and a plan for teaching should allow you to bring in good hourly wages. Of course, you must be patient and work well with children.

1. Medical Transcriptionist This stay at home job is great for those who are organised and can carry out directives to please other professionals. If you have outstanding grammar skills and the room in your house for an office with the basic office equipment, this may be a stay-at-home job for you.

Both at it!!!!

To advertise in The Sentinella call 664 210 468 or email To My Dear Wife,

You will surely understand that I have certain needs that you, being 54 years old, can no longer satisfy. I am very happy with you and I value you as a good wife. Therefore, after reading this letter, I hope that you will not wrongly interpret the fact that I will be spending the evening with my 18 year old secretary at the Comfort Inn Hotel. Please don't be upset - I shall be home before midnight."

When the man came home late that night, he found the following letter on the dining room table:

My Dear Husband, I received your letter and thank you for

Totally everything considered

your honesty about my being 54 years old. I would like to take this opportunity to remind you that you are also 54 years old. As you know, I am a maths teacher at our local college. I would like to inform you that while you read this, I will be at the Hotel Fiesta with Michael, one of my students, who is also the assistant tennis coach. He is young, virile, and like your secretary, is 18 years old. As a successful businessman who has an excellent knowledge of Maths, you will understand that we are in the same situation, although with one small difference - 18 goes into 54 a lot more times than 54 goes into 18. Therefore, I will not be home until sometime tomorrow."

*Cats and dogs both welcome *Generous sized kennels & runs *Extra large ones for 2/3 family pets *Large, safe, enclosed exercise area *Delivery and collection service *Full grooming service on Sundays *Bath & brush any day by appointment

Horse Riding

Please mention The Sentinella when replying to adverts Les and Rob left London with great plans of running a horse-riding establishment in Andalucia. Like many they expected everything to go smoothly and to live out their days happily in the sunshine with not a care in the world. It didn’t quite work out that way and they ended up living in a small apartment in Granada with not a horse in sight.

Rob kept a record of their experiences by sending e-mails to friends back in the UK. Here their adventure continues... “Since it’s nearly Christmas we thought we’d have a dry run at preparing a festive meal that we had planned for some friends. We've managed to learn how to read most of the food labels here in Spain. Sometimes though we make mistakes. We bought something clearly labelled "Pavo" (Turkey). It looked like a Turkey and mostly seemed like one until we carved it. I'm not sure what it was, maybe a big sausage in Turkey skin. We've realised that the big letters on

food labels don't necessarily refer to the main ingredients but might just mean that it has been in the vicinity of same. No importa! We ate it. Some of it. We had lot's of Cava and bacon butties to wash it down so all wasn't lost. We’ve cancelled the dinner. We went to the coast at the weekend again, it rained! They had a pre-Christmas party on the camp-site in a sort of conservatory, which I'm sure is lovely in the summer but was bloody freezing that night, despite the feeble gas heater in the corner and the brave attempts at festive decoration (fake snow on the windows and tinsel on the potted palms). The randomly scattered buckets designed to catch the leaks from the roof proved hazardous to the merry, drunken campers but they mostly managed to dance round them with few mishaps. The major high-light was the, very pretty young Spanish barmaid who got a bit carried away trying to teach a lecherous elderly chap some kind of Flamenco (the X-rated version). It was all going well at first, the old bloke was certainly enjoying it but it was cut

Residencial Costa del Oro Bloque 9 - local 9 Tel: 952 53 46 37 Torrox Costa short when the poor girl's false teeth fell out during an over excited "Ole". She disappeared behind the bar and kept a low profile after that. It was still raining…. so much that the pump that runs the water system in our camp-site (brilliantly located underground!!!) got flooded and broke. We ended up the victims of too much water which cut of our water, so we came back to Granada. In Granada it's raining. There's a digger in our street, apparently there's something wrong with the water, so they've dug up the road, no-one's mentioned putting it back!. It's only a small digger, but it's only a small street. We now have to take a detour several streets out of our way just to avoid a bloody tonka toy blocking the passage. We did squeeze past it once, the locals do, but we got covered in grease and we haven't got enough water to go getting covered in, hard to remove, tonka grease again. Have a good one! Feliz Navidad!” Rob and Les did make it here in the end and take people horse-riding in the area around Lake Vinuela. You can contact them at Los Caballos del Puente on 697 594 824.
